9 Cyclists Arrested in Protest

Nine people were arrested last night and 40 bicycles were seized as about a thousand cyclists hit the streets in the monthly Critical Mass bicycle protest ride, the police said. The cyclists filled the canyons of Park Avenue and Broadway in a smaller replay of the ride that led to hundreds of arrests on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

Magneta Lane - Yeah Yeah Yeah

Magneta Lane

Check out these three 19 year old girls from Canada. They're called Magneta Lane and they sound like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Strokes. They're signed to Paper Bag records and you can stream three songs on their website.

They're playing their first U.S. show in NYC at CBGB on Oct. 13th (CMJ). They haven't even been playing instruments for a year.

Blondie, The Strokes, Sonic Youth...Ramones Cancer Benefit

Be Well - The Ramones Beat on Cancer

Here are the details for the Ramones benefit concert you've been reading about...

Blondie, The Strokes, Sonic Youth, CJ and Tommy Ramone, Daniel Rey, Andrew WK and special guests to appear at benefit concert at New York Nightclub Spirit - Friday October 8th (doors 6PM).

Location:
Spirit New York
530 W. 27th Street
New York, NY 10001

Tickets are $50 (before the ticketmaster service charge) (but it's for a good cause with lots of headliners).

The biggest problem is deciding whether you want to go to this, or Rilo Kiley at Bowery Ballroom or Explosions in the Sky at Mercury Lounge or The Mountain Goats & John Vanderslice at Knitting Factory.

Also, I'm a little leary about the whole nightblub as a concert venue thing. Spirit holds 2000 people. Anyone been to a show there?

San Genero Festival Cannoli Eating Contest - pics

Cannoli Eating Contest

Friday (17 September 2004) I took off of work. I was walking around the San Genero festival (which is still running by the way) with a friend from out of town. By total chance, I was there for the 3rd annual Cannoli Eating Contest - sponsored by the International Federation of Competitive Eaters. They're the same ones who do the Hot Dog eating contest in Coney Island. So of course I took some pics.

Last year's winner (Cookie Jarvis) kicked off the event. He holds the world record in Cannoli eating: 21 in 6 minutes.

Rape Attempt in Greenpoint

Here's a disturbing story (not about me) that will make you think twice before walking home by yourself late at night.

"i was attacked last night at about 4:30 in the
morning on nassau near mcguinness (greenpoint). a car had
been following me for a few blocks when it pulled over, and
this guy got out and waited for me to walk by. i thought i could
just tell him to f*ck off and walk past him, but he wouldn't let me
pass. then he grabbed me, and i couldn't move. i was
screaming for help, and a couple actually walked by and did
NOTHING (seriously, i hope they go to hell). he was trying to
cover my mouth (i'm pretty sure i bit him), and he was trying to
force me into his car. he had a gun in his car. i'm almost
positive he's a rapist. luckily, i finally broke free and kicked
him in the face with my heels as he was bent
toward the car. i think he was bleeding, and i ran
away. i made the foolish, drunken decision to walk home by
myself (though i was warned against it), which i'll never do
again. sometimes i feel like greenpoint is really safe, and it's
fine to walk home. i've realized it's never fine to walk home
alone at 430 am. i filed a police report. i remember that the guy
had really short blonde hair and was driving a cheesy, black
sports type car. i would say he was around 30 and really
muscular and definitely Polish. the police are looking for him,
but they told me to make sure i told everyone i knew to be
careful because these type of crimes are never isolated
incidents. please don't walk anywhere alone late at night, look
out for this guy (his face is probably f*cked up right now), and
BE CAREFUL!!! please repost this or email it to people you
know in the area or just tell people to be safe."

RightRides wants to help you avoid a similar situation. If you want to help them, their next meeting is Wednesday, September 22nd at Triple Crown Bar (N11th and Bedford) at 7:00

Indian Larry Memorial Block Party - pics

Indian Larry Memorial

Indian Larry Memorial

I didn't get to the Indian Larry memorial until about 7pm. It was already dark out and ending soon. Nonetheless, it was an impressive tribute to an impressive man.

N 14th st, the location of Larry's garage/shop, was closed off. There was a stage & bbq outside and beer inside the shop. Here are some pictures.

Indian Larry RIP.

Mellowdrone & Gratitude at CMJ

Mellowdrone and Gratitude will be in NYC for CMJ.These two bands actually have nothing to do with each other, except for the fact that my friend john loves them both. I met john through the trading of Onelinedrawing bootlegs. Onelinedrawing is the solo project of Jonah Matranga. Gratitude is Jonah Matranga's new band. John turned me on to Mellowdrone. John lives in Minneapolis, so he's not going to be happy about the following NYC dates:

Oct 12 - Gratitude @ Downtime or CBGB or both
Oct 13 - Gratitude @ Downtime or CBGB or somewhere in NYC
Oct 14 - Mellowdrone @ Parkside Lounge (4-7pm)
Oct 15 - Mellowdrone @ Dumbo arts center (w/ the dears and the prosaics) (brooklyn)
Oct 16 - Mellowdrone @ Soundfix Record Store (5pm-7pm w/ the dears
) (brooklyn)
