Zombie Porn Banned | Free Screening Tonight in NYC

Re-Penetrator

This post is Not Safe For Work (NSFW)

'There comes a point towards the beginning of "Re-Penetrator" —like when the undead stripper starts sucking off the mad scientist who's bought her back to life and spits a mouthful of fake blood all over his crotch—when you may start thinking that the folks at Burning Angel have gone too far.' (via Fleshbot)

Apparently their billing company thought so. The video was banned from their site, but you can catch it tonight for free, and get drunk for free, at RIFIFI.

Benefit at Barbes to Purchase New Piano

Barbes needs a new piano. Badly. Not only has our spinet seen better days, but its original owner is taking it back in a couple of weeks. We are trying to raise funds to purchase a new Piano and for that purpose are holding a benefit next monday, Nov 1st, from 7 to 10:30 or so. You can help us by attending, and enjoy some great music in the process. Hope to see you there.

"GODS ARE IN THE HOUSE"
A Benefit Concert to raise funds for a new piano for Barbès

Monday November 1st 7:00pm

Featuring :
7:00 JOEL FORRESTER (Microscopic Septet, People Like Us)
7:30 JOSHUA CAMP (One Ring Zero)
8:15 DEIDRE RODMAN (Lascivious Biddies)
8:45 ANTHONY COLEMAN (Cubanos Postizos, Sephardic Tinge)
9:30 RACHELLE GARNIEZ

$15 tickets available from the bar or at the door.
If you can't attend but wish to donate, pls make out check to Vinoli, inc - piano fund, and mail to Barbès - 376 9th st, Brooklyn, NY 11215

"God is in the House is a collection of recordings made by Art Tatum at after-hour house parties in Harlem in the forties. The legendary pianist can be heard on some of the most out-of-tune, dysfunctional pianos - yet, maybe challenged by the instruments themselves, Art Tatum often sounds at his best.

Barbès' piano, likewise, is a challenging instrument often played by extraordinary pianists who manage to transcend its flaws. Most are very polite, some of them mention Art Tatum, but all long for an instrument that wouldn't always sound like it has been drinking to excess - a sober piano that could withstand the demands of pieces by Shostakovitch, Duke Ellington - or Tom Waits......

In an effort to raise funds for a decent piano, we are holding a benefit with some of the most talented musicians and pianists we know. For what will hopefully be the last time, they will extract divine sounds out of our drunken spinet. We hope to see you there"

Cat Power DVD Released

Experimental filmmaker, photographer and visual artist Mark Borthwick has completed an elaborate package including a nearly 2-hour-long film of Cat Power playing solo outdoors in the countryside. Shot from a great distance in gloriously grainy color, and recorded with all the ambient sounds of nature, this film in the tradition of Warhol and Wiseman is a fascinating document.

The DVD also includes 3 nature films set to music from 'You Are Free', and a CD including a single 18-minute long unreleased song saga entitled "Willie Deadwilder," an outtake from the 'You Are Free' recording sessions.

In a slipcase with foldout digipak and 64-page perfect-bound book created and illustrated by Mark Borthwick.

Halloween News

ABC News reports that a Washington State school plans to cancel its annual Halloween celebration this year because Halloween is Disrespectful to Witches.

British Satanists dying to fight the war on terrorism can now sigh a breath of relief. The British Armed Forces now allows devil worship.

Har Mar Superstar CMJ pics | AOL Interview

Har Mar Superstar pictures from CMJ Day 2 @ Coral Room (14 October 2004).
AOL Interviews Har Mar. Reprinted without permission.

Do you consider NYC home?
I do consider NYC home in a sense. I've never properly had residence there, but I've spent a lot of time hanging around. I'm sure I'll live there some day soon. I have tons of friends there and know it like the back of my hand.

Har Mar Superstar

What's your favorite place to play in the city, and why?
I think the Bowery Ballroom is a great place to play because it's an intimate venue and you can escape to the basement bar if the band on stage is crap.

Har Mar Superstar

Do you have any hangouts? Favorite bars or restaurants?
I hang around the Lower East Side and the East Village a lot, so I always find myself at Max Fish, 2A, and eventually the Mars Bar when I'm drunk enough to not be put off by the overwhelming scent of piss and vomit. I like to get groups of friends together to drink sangria and eat pasta at Max. That place has the best food.

Har Mar Superstar

What's the first place you'd send a friend who's visiting the city?
I would send 'em into Manhattan and just tell them to walk. That's the only way to take in the city. There wouldn't be a specific place in mind. I would just say take in the vibe and feel what NYC is all about... weird people doing their thing.

David Kilgour @ Mercury Lounge | pics

Insound's weekly newsletter had the following to say yesterday:

'Still recovering. Still celebrating. 168 hours. It's gotta be like a record or something. CMJ starts on Wednesday a week ago at the Merge showcase. Got there early to see David Kilgour backed by Yo La Tengo. It was historic. And nobody was there. And that depressed me. So I had a drink. The rest is sort of a blur.'

Actually Insound, I was also there. I even have some pictures to prove it. (13 October 2004)

David Kilgour

David Kilgour

David Kilgour first started playing guitar as a teenager in the late 70’s. When he and his brother Hamish decided to form a band, they called themselves The Clean. The rest, as they say, is rock n’ roll history.

David Kilgour

The Clean went on to become one of the most popular and most respected bands in New Zealand, and their legend as one of the founders of one of underground music’s most influential “scenes” quickly spread to all corners of the globe. David proceeded to form and play with other bands such as Stephen and the Great Unwashed, as The Clean drifted in and out of activity over the next 20 years.

David Kilgour

In 1992, Kilgour struck out on his own and recorded his first solo CD, Here Come The Cars, which received much critical acclaim. Two more solo LPs followed, Sugar Mouth in 1994 and David Kilgour and The Heavy Eights in 1997. In late 2000, after one of their many hiatuses, The Clean reformed to record their triumphant new album Getaway. All along the way, over the course of two decades, David has come to be known as one of the most respected and admired songwriters of his generation.

David Kilgour

Frozen Orange is David Kilgour's second record for Merge, and it is every bit as wonderful as A Feather in the Engine and stacks up well against his best work with the Clean. Kilgour has been making smart, melodic, and interesting indie for more years than anyone would care to add up, and unlike many indie rockers who seem to be merely shuffling along because the music is now their career, Kilgour is creating some of his best music yet. Disgraceland (Thursday nights at Crobar) is Larry Tee's new party. Larry Tee's last party was Berliniamsburg at Luxx in Williamsburg. Many of you probably remember it. It put electroclash on the map.

Misshapes is the weekly Saturday night hipster party @ Luke & Leroy in the West Village. Chances are if you read this blog, and live in or near NYC, you've heard of Misshapes by now.

Le Tigre has been described as a "pro-queer feminist electro-punk band." They're headlining Irving Plaza Halloween AND November 1st AND opening for The Pixies at Hammerstein Ballroom in December.

Kennedys Moving to Park Slope?

'Rumors that the Kennedy clan were boxing up their Park Avenue abode for Brooklyn were met yesterday with a stony "no comment" at the offices of both Caroline's literary agent and husband Edwin's Sixth Avenue design firm.

But the nay-saying wasn't enough to tame the unbridled enthusiasm of Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, who enthused: "Brooklyn, home to everyone from everywhere, is proud to be the new home of the Kennedys. Park Slope: It ain't Cape Cod, but it's starting to look a lot like Camelot."'

Sondre Lerche @ Southpaw - pics

Sondre Lerche at Southpaw

Sondre Lerche (pronounced Sondra Lair Kay) of Norway played an extremely packed Southpaw in Brooklyn last night (20 October 2004). I've been to packed shows at Southpaw before (The Unicorns & Mogwai). This was more packed.

I missed The Golden Republic, which is unfortunate because I thoroughly enjoyed them as Sondre's backing band. In fact, my advice to Sondre is to stick with the band format. He played about half solo, and half with the band. Me liked the band. I believe the cheering crowd agreed.

Sondre is an entertainer. His between song banter is reminiscent of the classic lounge act. He's the Nordic Frank Sinatra, telling jokes and wooing the ladies. And I think he has the potential to go in that direction if he wants to, although it probably goes over much better in Norway in his native language. Sometimes, with his less-than-perfect command of the English language, I wasn't sure if the (tough Brooklyn.... grrr) crowd was laughing with him, or at him.

Luckily for Sondre, no matter what is going wrong on stage, there will always be the girls in the audience screaming about getting naked and how much they love him.

Canoeing The Gowanus Canal - pictures

A big thanks to the weather gods for supplying perfect canoeing weather on Saturday. And a bigger thanks to the Gowanus Dredgers for supplying the opportunity.

The Gowanus Canal, from a Canoe

'The Gowanus Canal extends through the neighborhoods of Carroll Gardens, Park Slope and Red Hook. Built in the 19th century to accommodate barge traffic, the canal’s banks still reflect its industrial heritage.'

The Gowanus Canal, from a Canoe

'Nearby buildings date back to the Revolutionary War, but today much of the canal is lined with concrete plants, warehouses, and parking lots that limit access to the water’s edge.'

The Gowanus Canal, from a Canoe

'Very few remaining industries still use the canal for barge traffic. Today, as neighborhoods around the canal grow, residents are looking at the infamous waterway in a new light.'

The Gowanus Canal, from a Canoe

The Gowanus Canal, from a Canoe

'Since the mid-1800s, the Gowanus Canal has been heavily polluted. In the late 20th century, poor environmental conditions were exacerbated when the propeller in the flushing tunnel broke, leaving the canal's water essentially stagnant.'

The Gowanus Canal, from a Canoe

In 1999, after years of advocacy by local officials and residents, the tunnel was repaired and 2,000 tons of contaminated sediments were dredged from the bottom of the canal. These efforts led to immediate water quality improvements and sparked, perhaps for the first time in 50 years, interest in recreational access.

Nancy Sinatra to Play Joe's Pub

Nancy Sinatra

Nancy Sinatra is playing Joe's Pub in NYC, on December 1st, 2004 (7 & 9:30). Tickets are $30, and on sale at Telecharge.

Nancy, who recently performed at Little Steven's Garage Festival, is making a comeback. "This heavily styled songstress scored major mid-'60s success with hit movies like Elvis's Speedway and hit songs like "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'," "Sugar Town," and the smooth "Somethin' Stupid" with dad Frank." [quote from swingin chicks]

Her new, self-titled, album was released on September 28, 2004.

MetaCritic says:

"A better album title would have been 'Nancy Sinatra & Friends,' as the 64-year-old singer collaborates with fans such as Morrissey, Pulp's Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawley, Sonic Youth's Jim O'Rourke and Thurston Moore, Jon Spencer, Pete Yorn and U2."

From All Music Guide:

Records like Nancy Sinatra, which take a pop icon, surround her with current admirers for collaborators, and hope for a sound both modern and classic, are quite often disasters and almost never live up to even the most grudging of high hopes. Well, thanks to this (and Loretta Lynn's Van Lear Rose), you can toss that theory out the window, because Nancy Sinatra is a resounding success.

RightRides Update

With another rape in Williamsburg, the mission of RightRides becomes more and more relevant, but they need your help to get going.

Here's a word-for-word message that's been circulating:

Subject: RightRides.org - calling all cars!

Last night, Teri Muroff and I met the RightRides women, Oraia and Consuelo. They are FABULOUS and very well organized for a small startup program. They already have a ton of volunteers but alas, no one has a car! If you know someone who'd be willing to lend their car, and/or volunteer with their car, please pass this email round and round!

There's a website which will tell you all about this important initiative which will help Greenpoint and Williamsburg women feel a little bit safer when going home (particularly late at night), and has all the contact info you need:

http://www.rightrides.org/

If you'd like to meet Oraia and Consuelo, come to the 94th Precinct Community Council meeting this Monday/October 18 at 7:30pm, at the Greenpoint Savings Bank on Calyer Street, off Manhattan Ave. They'll also make a presentation at the CB1 meeting on November 9 but please, if you already know you're interested, get in touch with them before then.

CMJ: The End

TMJ

I have nothing more to report on CMJ. What you read in my last post was it.

Friday night I gave in to my body, the rainy weather, and my general lack of interest in seeing any more shows. I stayed home, cleaned, and caught up on sleep.

By Saturday I had completely lost interest in CMJ. Instead I went canoeing on the Gowanus Canal, walked around the DUMBO arts festival, and later went to a party with people who thought CMJ was a dental condition. I did end the night in a Lower East Side bar, possibly surrounded by strung out music execs from the Midwest, but that doesn't count.

As the day progresses, I hope to get some more posts up here.

CMJ Continued

CMJ continues... along with the deterioration of my health.

I started Day 2 back at the Museum of Television and Radio for The Arcade Fire live on KEXP. KEXP's staff removed all the chairs, and packed seven band members, one dj, a lot of equipment, and as many fans as possible into the fairly compact studio.

The Arcade Fire
The Arcade Fire

The Arcade Fire

Just because they were on a radio station didn't mean The Arcade Fire were gonna (yes...'gonna') tune down their performance. Audience members were climbed on, band members choked each other, and valuable, framed posters were used as drums (which the museum asked them to stop). Their five song set, set the museum on fire (that pun goes out to Win's father). They had played all five of the songs the night before, but this time they sounded even better for whatever reason.

From KEXP I headed southwest to the mermaid-less Coral Room for, possibly the kitschiest event of CMJ, Baby and Har Mar Superstar.

Baby
Baby

Har Mar Superstar
Har Mar Superstar

Baby put on a killer show (100 times better than the last time I saw them at Mercury Lounge), and Har Mar rocked the house. He knows how to work the ladies.

After Har Mar, I headed further south to CB's Gallery where the night ended perfectly with an extremely powerful, emotional set by Jonah Matranga (previously Onelinedrawing, front man of Gratitude).

Jonah Matranga
Jonah Matranga

I'm not too excited about tonight's prospects. The Sufjan show seems good, but I've seen him too many times, and to see all the bands, you need to be at Mercury Lounge for about seven hours. If you have any recommendations, please let me know.

I'll definitely be skipping all afternoon events again. If you're looking for something to do:

Blanche, Brendan Benson and Buck 65 play Housing Works Cafe at 2:00 pm.

Trail of Dead & The Concretes are DJing The Fader party which includes a bunch of bands, also at 2:00 pm.

CMJ So Far

I'm finding it extremely difficult to work, sleep, and blog during CMJ, so I probably won't have a lot of posts this week. I have a ton of pictures to post, so consider this a preview of what's to come.

Tuesday night was the pre-CMJ Syndicate Party at Downtime. It was sponsored by Cartoon Network and Revolver magazine. That means there were lots of cartoons playing, posters of cartoons, and free Revolver magazines. The lineup included Gratitude, The Features, MC Lars, and Murder by Death. I wanted to see The Features and Gratitude. Luckily they were the first two to play.

The Features:
The Features

Gratitude:

Wednesday I spent part of the day in KEXP's studio. I caught Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists, and the tail-end of Ted Leo.

Ted Leo:

The Decemberists:

Yes I do work. So it was back to work after KEXP, and then to CBGBs at 9 to catch Magneta Lane. Magneta Lane was playing in CBs downstairs at 9 (actually almost 10), and Gratitude was playing CBGB upstairs at 11:45 (actually about 12). Arcade Fire played at Mercury Lounge at 1:00 (actually 1:30?). Thanks to fairly short sets by all involved, the timing couldn't of been more perfect.

It was one of the most amazing musical days I've ever had, but I'm deaf and exhausted, so I'm going to skip all daytime events today. For those looking for something to do this afternoon, you have your choice:

1) The Raveonettes are playing at the Delancey (3 pm)

2) Maplewood and Saul Williams are playing the Fader party (4 pm)

3) Mellowdrone is playing the private Addvice party at Parkside Lounge (4 pm)

NYU's Next Vegan Dinner - October 12th

I love October because it means the start of vegan dinners at NYU. With the help of SEAL, NYU turns one of their dining halls completely vegan for one dinner every month. Pizza, entrees, un-chicken nuggets, ice cream, salad, soup, etc.... All you can eat in a real school cafeteria...even if you don't go to school there (even if you're not vegan).

Here are the details for the next one:

The first vegan night is going to be next tuesday, October 12th in:
Hayden Dining Hall (located at Washington Square West between W4th St. and Washington Pl. )
The hours are: 4:30-8:00 pm
It is $7.95+tax (or NYU meal plan)
and, best of all.... ALL YOU CAN EAT!!!

And is open to the public, so come one come all and load up on
tasty vegan food...
plus come and see what SEAL is all about for our new and
improved 2004-05 year!!!

ps sorry for the short notice, our new head chef is working very
hard to accommodate for us and our needs and this first vegan night
was just a bit rushed for his schedule. ... but it is happening, and
that is what counts!!
pps. no pre menu - COME AND BE AMAZED!

These vegan dinners are part of the reason NYU was voted one of the most veggie friendly schools in the country.

David Lee Roth & Juliette Lewis to Rock Tribeca

Natural Born KillersDiamond Dave

In related, but unrelated news, both Juliette Lewis & Diamond Dave (sort of, maybe) are coming to the Tribeca Rock Club in NYC.

This Saturday, 10/9/2004, is "Diamond Dave's 50th Birthday Bash!"

'David Lee Roth is turning 50. And he's STILL twice as cool as two 25 year-old verisons of Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone COMBINED. So come on down and celbrate the man, the myth, the LEGEND with a healthy dose of VAN ROTH classics as well as some gems from the Diamond Dave solo catalog. We'll have a boatload of surprises as well as some surprise guests, and who knows, if we're lucky Diamond Dave himself will grace us with his presence!'

Unchained, a Van Halen tribute band, will be performing.

Then on Saturday November 13th, Juliette and The Licks rock Tribeca Rock. Juliette Lewis of Cape Fear, Kalifornia, and Natural Born Killers fame, is the Licks' sexy, punk-rock frontwoman.

Stream Juliette and The Licks tunes on their brand new website.

And check out these pics from various California performances.

Tickets available here.

Bloc Party @ Tribeca Grand Hotel - pics

Bloc Party @ Tribeca Grand

The Bloc Party show at Tribeca Grand wasn't as good as the one at Knitting Factory 2 nights earlier. Maybe because Knitting Factory was their first U.S. show ever. Maybe because Knitting Factory is a better venue. Maybe because they were tired from 3 nights of partying and playing in the U.S.A. (Philly the night before) Maybe because they didn't go on until two hours after they were advertised to go on. Maybe because most people had to wait on a long line to get into this 'free' party. Maybe you don't agree. Anyway, they still rocked...short set or not.

Rumor: Bloc Party signed to a major U.S. label @ Tribeca Grand.

Franz Ferdinand @ Roseland Again

Franz Ferdinand at Roseland

I went to Roseland last night(3 October 2004) just to sell my Franz Ferdinand tickets because I had too much to do, and I didn't really feel like seeing them again. I had four tickets. A friend was taking one of them. Another friend was meeting me outside to help "scalp" the other three. I only wanted face value.

I got there around 8. I figured I'd be out of there and on my way back home in 5 minutes. An hour and a half later, after having my life threatened by "professional" scalpers for competing with their business, Franz Ferdinand was going on. I still had 2 tix in hand. The best I could get at that point was $10 for both from other scalpers. In I went.

The show was pretty good, but I wasn't really feelin it. I stayed out real late the night before (Bloc Party...Tribeca Grand...pics soon), stood all the way in the back of Roseland, and needed to be home to finish some work. The friend who came with me had never heard them before though. Now they've got one new fan.

I don't have any pictures from the inside because Roseland confiscated my camera battery at the door. That never happened before. Coincidentally, that was one of the only times in recent history that I didn't bring a second battery. Luckily, I did get the battery back from Roseland security before I left. The pictures would of looked exactly the same as the last show anyway.

Onelinedrawing & Gratitude Torrents

My friend John posted two Onelinedrawing "bootlegs" I recorded, on Sharing the Groove. They were originally posted in March when I recorded them, but have been reseeded for those who missed them then.

The March 8th, 2004 recording was actually a presentation Jonah gave at the NYC Apple Store as part of their Made on a Mac series (in the same theater I sat in 2 days ago for the photobloggers event).

The March 9th, 2004 recording is Jonah as Onelinedrawing (with Ian Love of Cardia) at CBGB.

These two combined performances included a preview of the last Onelinedrawing album, Volunteers, which came out shortly thereafter.

Also on Sharing The Groove right now is Gratitude's first ever live performance - September 28th, 2004 in Orangevale, CA. (Gratitude being Jonah Matranga's latest project). I'm pretty excited to hear this one.

Schwarzenneger Signs Anti-Foie Gras Bill Into Law

New York and California are the only places in the United States where Foie Gras is produced. Thanks to this new bill, New York is the only one left.

"Foie gras is produced by force-feeding ducks or geese up to three times per day by prying open their bills, shoving long, inflexible pipes down their throats, and pumping several pounds of feed into each bird's stomach. The process causes the birds' livers, which are eventually sold as foie gras, to become diseased and swell to up to 10 times their normal size. Some birds experience ripped-open necks and ruptured internal organs because of the intense pressure of the forced feeding. Workers are often given monetary rewards just for not "bursting" birds. The stress and pain frequently result in the birds' becoming unable to walk and being reduced to propelling themselves by pushing with their wings. "
