The Hidden Cameras, headliners turned opener for The Arcade Fire, played a both visually and aurally powerful show at Bowery Ballroom on Thursday night (11 November 2004). Here are some photos from that event.

Nirvana Box Set | Trailer

Nirvana

The long awaited four disc Nirvana box set comes out on November 23rd.

'81 tracks are included on the box of which 68 have never been previously issued. Material for the CD’s spans the band’s entire history from their inception and includes demos, outtakes and live recordings. The DVD shows never seen before footage of the band at rehearsals, recording studios and live shows.'

I don't know for sure, but I'd be willing to bet that most of the 'unreleased' material on the box set has been available on bootlegs for years. Even if that's true, and even if you own those bootlegs, the box set is still very cool.

Arcade Fire @ Bowery Ballroom Recap | Pics

The Arcade Fire

The Arcade Fire show at Bowery Ballroom is over. Everyone was good. Dirty on Purpose were good. The Hidden Cameras and their go-go dancers (stay tuned for pics) were good. The Arcade Fire were good. By good, I mean great.

The Arcade Fire

Win's brother didn't show up (Win = lead singer, brother = band member). Win said he couldn't get out of school. Anyone want to start a family squabble rumor?

They played Crown of Love (as promised last time). They played two cover songs, one of which was by Leonard Cohen.

Win's best line: "This is our first time in New York City." I think he said it just so they can laugh the next day at how many blogs and articles mention it (think "Flavor of the Month"). Well here it is. And here are three pictures. Stay tuned for more in the future.

DFA | Death From Above

DFA, the producers behind The Rapture and Black Dice, recently came out with a compilation of previously un-CD-released tracks. You may have noticed it as the 2nd to last addition to Pitchfork's best of the year.

DFADeath From Above

DFA, which stands for Death From Above, is not to be confused with the other current Pitchfork fave (3rd from last added), Death From Above 1979. One's an acronym. One's got 1979 on the end. Got it?

There's actually some history there.

'After Death From Above Records (aka the DFA), approached the band to change its name, the duo responded by tacking on the legal minimum of numbers to their moniker and posting to their former web site: "FUCK DFA RECORDS FUCK JAMES MURPHY WE DECLARE JIHAD ON THEM HOLY WAR ENDING IN THIER DEATH AND DISMEMBERMENT... james murphy is a selfish piece of fuck that will burn in the flames of a specially dedicated rock and roll jihad. if i had the resources i would fly a plane into his skull.' - pitchfork

If you're interested in knowing more about DFA, check out this article in the Village Voice. It's an interesting story.

Vice band, Death from Above 1979, are supposed to play Rothko on December 4th. (If there is a Rothko on December 4th)

Arcade Fire @ Mercury Lounge, NYC, CMJ | Pics

The Arcade Fire @ Mercury Lounge

Tonight The Arcade Fire is back in NYC for their highly anticipated show @ Bowery Ballroom. The hype machine is still in full effect, as even employees of SPIN magazine are asking if anyone's got extra tickets. In fact, people will do almost anything for tix to this show. My suggestion to those wanting tix: show up and you will probably get in one way or another (having some money in your pocket will definitely help too). If you don't go, don't worry...according to Jen's interview on Gothamist, they'll be back real soon.

The Arcade Fire @ Mercury Lounge

I posted one picture of their last (CMJ) show at Mercury Lounge right after it happened on October 13th. The pic also appeared on Gothamist. Then there were the pics from the next day at their KEXP performance (and again).

I'm Not the Only One Who's Never Seen the OC

Seven Swans

An important announcement from Sufjan Stevens:

"My song "To Be Alone With You," from Seven Swans, will be featured on this week's episode of The O.C. on Fox (Thursday Nov. 11 @ 8/7c). Wow! While I haven't actually seen this show on TV, I've been told it's about the courageous work of AIDS relief volunteers in South Africa. So I'm really excited that my song can be part of this philanthropic project. Tune in!" -Sufjan

Bowery Ballroom Concert Update

So, you've got Broken Social Scene playing two nights (with their gig opening for the Pixies at Hammerstein in between) [see previous post]. If your decision on which one to go to comes down to the opener, consider this...

Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene called Alex Lukashevsky (opening the 13th) "one of the best songwriters Canada's ever been blessed with." Alex is also a member of Deep Dark United. Listen to them here.

Raising The Fawn (opening the 15th) are part of the "family." Justin Peroff and John Crossingham, both of Broken Social Scene, are also in Raising the Fawn.

Interesting tidbit about the two Joanna Newsom, (Smog), & Weird War shows at the end of December. The three artists will will share the stage, playing round-robin style for several hours, 'thus pleasing fans of all three bands simultaneously.'

Tomorrow is The Arcade Fire. Get there early to catch Jinners' Dirty On Purpose, and The Hidden Cameras. The Hidden Cameras were actually the original headliners of the show. About a week after it was announced, they became co-headliners. I think The Arcade Fire is now the only "headliner" (like it makes a difference anyway...).

Patti Smith and her band are playing December 29th, 30th, and New Years eve. Tickets are $40 a piece for the first two nights, and $55 for New Years. They are on sale now.

Friday is Hot Snakes. Everyone was freakin out when they played Knitting Factory and Northsix recently. Haven't heard much about them since.

Sunday is Helmet. Part of me wants to go to that so bad. I used to love Helmet. It's been "sold out" for a while, but tickets are available.

On November 18th you've got Kasabian. There doesn't seem to be any hype surrounding them even though they're huge in the UK. Maybe we can't handle any more bands who are huge in the UK... In case you CAN handle more, consider that this is their only US date right now. Their album was supposedly released here yesterday, but neither Amazon or Insound has it.

November 21st: Minnie Driver. Ha.

November 23rd: Dogs Die in Hot Cars. I'm waiting to see if they can sell out Bowery Ballroom.

Not to be missed-hipster event on December 2nd - Inouk, Phoenix, Benzos, and Big City Rock.

Calexico plays December 7th. Not to be Missed.

Ted Leo is now playing two dates. December 11th & 12th.

December 16th is Joseph Arthur. He has a great voice. Listen to his CMJ KEXP performance.

Elefant, who recently played to a less-than-packed Mercury Lounge, are there on December 20th.

December 26th - 28th brings Fab Faux, the Beatles tribute band.

Chin Up I'm Still Up

Chin Up Chin Up @ The Delancey

Just got back from Chin Up Chin Up at The Delancey. The damn show was moved from Wednesday night at Rothko to Tuesday night at Delancey. Then it was moved from 10 pm to 1 am. The 1 am part was the worst because I sold my Muse tickets to go, and it ends up I could of went to both, and I should of been sleeping in the first place. I even called Delancey to make sure the set times they posted on their website were accurate, but when I got there they had changed. oh well.

I (sleep) walked around for 3 hours in the freezing cold. It ended up being worth it. A drunk, but not too drunk, Chin Up Chin Up played (a free show) to an intimate crowd in the basement of the Delancey. They were drunk because they also had three hours to kill after finding out about the time change. They kicked ass. They're still young. They can only get better.

Here's two pics. More when I get the chance. I'm already running on no sleep and I have to be up in about 4 hours... :(

Owen | I Do Perceive | New Album Out Today

Owen

Owen's I Do Perceive on Polyvinyl Records

Download She's a Thief (mp3) and check out Owen's new album, "I Do Perceive," today.

All Music Guide is better at reviews than me, so here it is:

'I do perceive. is the full-length follow-up to May 2004's (the ep and continues the new collaborative direction Mike Kinsella has been taking with Owen. This time, Cousin Nate Kinsella (Make Believe, Joan of Arc) lends assistance both on instrumentation and engineering, helping to create eight gorgeous cuts that are above and beyond anything Owen has done before.

I do perceive. differentiates itself from previous Owen releases. While the poetic songwriting and intricate musicianship remain, upbeat arrangements accompany each song's development culminating in an effect that is both majestic and wonderful.'

He's compared to to Onelinedrawing, Mark Kozelek, Elliot Smith, and The New Amsterdams.

Owen is playing Maxwell's in NJ on December 19th with Despistado and a whole bunch of others.

For one day only (maybe longer): download Who Found Out Who's Hair in Who's Bed? (mp3) from this site. (GET IT QUICK!)
----------

Also out today on Polyvinyl is a new EP by Mates of State.

AND NOT on Polyvinyl, Scissor Sisters Remixed. I hope it's good.
