Secret U2 Show in Washington Square Monday
U2log has confirmed the rumor that Productshop reported on Thursday.
U2 will play a free show in Washington Square Park in NYC Monday afternoon.
'U2log.com has confirmed with a source that the secret show in New York City will take place at Washington Square Park on Monday (Nov. 22) afternoon. Based on the information our source provided, we recommend that fans arrive between 1:00 and 1:30 pm. The show may begin as early as 1:00, but more likely between 2:00 and 3:00. This is no BS.'

The new STG | Welcome The Traders' Den
Sharing the Groove (STG), the wildly successful LOSSLESS bootleg trading community, closed for good a few weeks ago. I put "lossless" in caps because STG was a site where lossy formats like mp3 were not tolerated. Only lossless formats like SHN and FLAC were allowed - mostly traded via bittorrent. So much as a link to another site that posted MP3s could get you banned. (I promise I won't make any comparisons between Sharing the Groove and a certain political party that ruled Germany during World War II)
Since the closing of STG, a bunch of the moderators got together and started a new site. From the looks of it, The Traders' Den will be an even better and more up-to-date torrent site. So if you record or collect bootlegs, have a broadband internet connection, and understand the rules (all files must have blonde hair and blue eyes so that the trading pool is not diluted any further), then go register immediately for The Traders' Den.

I've noticed that this site has been taking a while to load in the browser. I've reduced the number of posts on the homepage from seven days worth to three days worth. That means if you want to read stuff older than three days, you have to click on the weekly archive links at the very bottom of the homepage.
Let me know if you notice an improvement. thanks!

Volume | It's Official
It's official. Volume has closed forever.
--------------------------------------
Dear Volume patron,
We have to sadly inform you of the closing of our Williamsburg venue, due to the stringent city regulations and the ensuing costs. We would like to thank you for your support over the past year, and would like to give you a little update on our future plans.
In the near future we will be programming interesting events at St.Ann's and Hiro Ballroom(at the Maritime Hotel), and will of course continue our programming at Joe's Pub and Central Park.
Our next upcoming event is a rare appearance by Serge Gainsbourg's
longstanding muse and partner in crime, the legendary ultra hipster Jane Birkin. (this Saturday November 20th at the NYU Skirball center for the Performing Arts). She will be performing the SG songbook in an arabic arrangement. Also look out for a very fun New Year's Eve event in the works. Again much thanks for all your support and hope to see you this saturday
Enjoy...

Similar Names Confusing You?

There are too many names in music that sound too similar. How often do you read a band name and think it's someone else? Here are some that confuse me on a daily basis, (and a few I had to think about to make this list longer.)
The Flesh & The Fever & The Fall

Madison & Madison Strays & AND Madison
American Music Club & American Analog Set
Cassettes & Microphones & Walkmen

And here are some that, although similar, have never actually confused me:

Bjork & Brant Bjork
Handsome Boy Modeling School & Handsome Family
Xiu Xiu and Zsa Zsa
Mary Lou Lord & The Lords of Acid

NYC Concert Update
This is advanced notice... Low are playing Bowery Ballroom on February 3rd and 4th. No, tickets are not on sale yet.
The opener for Scissor Sisters at Hammerstein Ballroom has been announced. It's VHS or Beta.
Phoenix & Inouk have added a second date at Bowery Ballroom. Those shows are December 1st and 2nd.
Calexico have added New York's Latin indie band, Cordero, as an opener to their show at Bowery Ballroom. This show should be sold out, but it's not.
Drive By Truckers has not sold out yet either. $20 for the January 1st day time show. $30 for the New Years Eve Show. These guys recently played Irving Plaza.
$25 for Misfits tickets is way too much. Maybe if Danzig was singing...
Fennesz dropped off the bill for the December 7th show at Knitting Factory. That's ok because that means Kimya Dawson is headlining.
Kimya Dawson is also opening for Br. Danielson at Northsix on December 3rd.
A band on my long list of guitly pleasures is Motion City Soundtrack. They'll be at Knitting Factory on December 8th.
Ida will be at Knitting Factory on the 12th for a benefit concert.
The Fever is opening for The Hives on November 21st.
The Flesh, who I always think is The Fever, are playing at Motherfucker on Thanksgiving Eve.
Elkland plays Pianos on November 29th.
Kevine Devine at Pianos on December 8th.
Le Tigre and Lesbians on Ecstasy play Eisner & Lubin Auditorium @ NYU on December 2nd.

From Autumn to Ashes @ Knitting Factory

From Autumn to Ashes are playing 2 nights at the Knitting Factory in NYC. That would be December 27th and 28th, and tickets are on sale.
Go to these shows and release all your anger before the end of the year. You'll start 2005 with a smile on your face.
(I think) Tickets are going to sell out very quickly, so don't wait.
All Music describes FATA:
'Long Island, NY's From Autumn to Ashes has gained a reputation for being one of the more melodic bands in the East Coast hardcore scene. Some purists, however, will argue that From Autumn to Ashes (FATA for short) isn't hardcore in the true sense — that even though the band's alternative pop/rock contains hardcore and metalcore elements, FATA doesn't play pure, unadulterated, 100 percent hardcore.'
If you've never heard From Autumn to Ashes, and you don't despise all hardcore/metal/emo, I recommend you turn up your volume and check out some of their videos and mp3s over here.

Movable Hype or How Many Bloggers Does It Take To....
I don't know what I'm talking about.
I do know there were a lot of bloggers in the house for the Movable Hype concert at Knitting Factory.
(I know there were even more there, but those are just the ones I stalk, I mean recognized.)
I must give major props to Jen and Gothamist for curating (is that a word?) such an awesome line up of bands, AND for choosing the Knitting Factory, and not some Lower East Side dive. The Knitting Factory sound system makes all the difference, and the bands all sounded amazing. I actually missed the first one, but was very impressed with The Sons of Sound (or should I say the band previously known as The Sons of Sound), Snowden and Asobi Seksu.
Gothamist has all the band and download links you need right here. I should go to bed now.
MORNING UPDATE:
I'm up again, and others are posting about this event...
Add these bloggers to the list of people in the house.

Chad VanGaalen | Infiniheart | Chin Up Who?

I'm a little late to the game on this one if you consider that Chad VanGaalen's album has been out for almost a year. On the other hand, Infiniheart has gotten very little press and is not even available at your finer indie establishments.
If you consider yourself old school Chad, you may skip to the next post now. Everyone else may continue reading along.
Copy and Pasted for your reading pleasure:
'For 10 years Chad has been producing work in his bedroom, playing all the instruments, and has amassed hundreds of songs. Catch & Release / Flemish Eye has compiled 19 of these - including three new ones - as Chad's first CD release proper: Infiniheart.
Strains of The Flaming Lips, Neil Young, Modest Mouse and Beck run through this record, but these beautifully crafted songs really transcend any comparison; defined by a unique vision and lifted by Chad's incandescent vocals, these songs are moving, heartfelt, and strangely danceable.'

Fatboy Slim @ Drive In Studios, NYC | Pics

So as if Saturday night wasn't strange enough....
I left the the surreal entertainment that was Juliette and the Licks at Tribeca Rock Club to meet a friend (and his friend who was in from out of town), over at some local Tribeca bar.
The bar was non-descript, your typical local Tribeca bar. What made the bar special was their odd choice of having a CD DJ at the end of the bar. There was barely enough room for him, and they could of just as well played mixed CDs. What made the DJ special was his choice of playing all indie music in a very non-indie venue. In the 30 minutes we were there, he played Arcade Fire, Death Cab (formerly Indie actually), and even Xiu Xiu. (I forget what else)
Being the music nerd that I am, I had to name each song as it came on, and... so naturally the conversation turned to music. My friend asked if I had heard the new Fatboy Slim. I replied that I hadn't, but that I believed that Fatboy just so happened to be playing this very night in a rave-like location somewhere in Manhattan. Long story short, we arrived at Drive In Studios on 18th St at 12:30 am - just in time to see Fatboy perform a 2 hour DJ set to a fair sized, very sweaty, and very appreciative crowd. Here are some pictures.

Denali Singer in New Project | Bella Lea

Do you remember Denali? They formed in 2000 with members of Engine Down, started to go places in 2004, and then suddenly broke up. The most memorable thing about them was the Portishead-like vocals of singer Maura Davis (Keeley Davis of Engine Down's sister).
Well, Maura is back. Her new project is called Bella Lea. The new band consists of herself, and some of the guys that started filling in for members of Denali towards the end of their existense. That includes ex-members of Euphone and Joan of Arc.
Their first show is in Washington DC at the Black Cat on December 18th, and Maura is playing a solo show in Charlottesville, Virginia on November 17th. Nothing else announced yet.
The only page they've got right now is on MySpace where, conveniently, you can listen to three tracks.

Canadians Hitting The Lower East Side in December
Controller Controller are reportedly playing Rothko on December 9th.
Signed to Canada's Paper Bag records, Jeddeth describes them:
'they don't have the most original sound, but when you've got something that works, why change it? think rapture / moving units. this girl calls it "dancy-post-pre-neo-punk-rock," but i'm gonna go with "you have no choice but to dance" music.'
Then on December 14th, one of Broken Social Scene's side projects plays Pianos. That would be Raising the Fawn. You may recall that they're opening for Broken Social Scene the next night at Bowery Ballroom. Since two members of Broken Social Scene are in Raising the Fawn, they must not be playing at the same time as BSS, who's opening that night for the Pixies at Hammerstein.
Tickets are not on sale for either of these shows yet, but there are still tickets left for Raising the Fawn and Broken Social Scene at Bowery Ballroom. Get em' while you can. The first night is sold out already.

RIP John Balance of Coil, Psychic TV | With ODB Now

'We are greatly saddened to have to you that at about 5.30 pm Saturday Nov 13th, Jhonn Balance, was killed in an accident at home. Under the influence of alcohol he fell from the first floor landing, hitting his head on the floor some 15ft below. Peter/Sleazy who was in the front room heard the noise, came out investigate and found him unconscious, though still breathing. Balance was rushed to hospital, where his condition deteriorated, and he died soon after, without ever regaining consciousness. There is no suggestion that this event was in any way deliberate, in fact, anything other than a tragic accident. Unusually, Balance had been cheerfull during the day, and was looking forward to seeing Ian at the weekend, and working on new recordings this week.'

Juliette (Lewis) and The Licks @ Tribeca Rock Club

Juliette Lewis of Cape Fear, Kalifornia, and Natural Born Killers fame, is the sexy, punk-rock frontwoman of Juliette and The Licks. Appropriately, their drummer is Patti Schemel of Hole. Strangely, their guitarist is Todd Morse from H2O. Here are photos from the Licks's performance Saturday night (13 November 2004) at the Tribeca Rock Club in NYC.

Juliette seemed to have all her lines memorized - like when she told the sold-out, eager to touch her (and touch her they did...over and over again), crowd that "You all loooook like Licks fans. You all come back now because we neeeed you." Juliette also stage dove and crowd surfed. They closed with a Van Halen cover. You can catch them in NYC again in the Spring if what they said is true.

Eagles of Death Metal | Walking Concert

Eagles of Death Metal and Walking Concert are coming to NYC together for a set of shows at Northsix (tickets) and CBGB (tickets) on December 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The Eagles of Death Metal feature Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age (as Baby Duck) on drums and Tim Vanhamel from the Belgian band Millionare on guitar. I caught their last show at Mercury Lounge, and it was a lot of fun. Front man Jesse Hughes (The Devil) makes the show with his over-the-top act.
Walking Concert is the new project of Walter Schreifels. Walter's last three bands were Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand, and Rival Schools. That alone is reason to check out this show.
