One Week Till The Pixies hit NYC

The Pixies from Soviet Panda

The above photo was borrowed, resized, and optimized without permission from Soviet Panda. His photos from the November 12th Minneapolis show are amazing, so go check them out.

In one week from now, The Pixies (the 6th greatest band in America?) will return to NYC for an 8 show run. It will be their first concert here in a bazillion years.

Those lucky enough to have/get tickets to the opening show, will see Brooklyn's own indie superstars, TV on the Radio, open the show.

The complete list of show dates and openers:

Sat Dec 11 - Tv On the Radio opening
Sun Dec 12 - The Datsuns opening
Mon Dec 13 - Mission of Burma opening
Tue Dec 14 - Broken Social Scene opening
Wed Dec 15 - Le Tigre opening
Thu Dec 16 - Reid Paley opening
Sat Dec 18 - Mike Watt & The Second man opening (7pm show)
Sat Dec 18 - Kristin Hersh & The 50 foot wave opening (midnight show)

All eight of these shows are sold out, BUT it is extremely easy to buy and trade tickets. (Craigslist, Ebay). You have no excuse. If you are in, or around NYC, and you are not going to at least one of these shows...well then you are either broke or stupid. Keep in mind, that although I consider Hammerstein Ballroom a large venue, it is a small venue compared to where they've been playing in other cities.

Leary of "reunion" tours? Think the Pixies are too old to rock? Well, the reviews from around the world are in, and The Pixies are as good as ever.

Reunited Pixies offer unbelievable live experience

Pitchfork Scandal

Pitchfork

Pitchfork is supposedly threatening to sue a print magazine that is publishing an article stating that Pitchfork accepts money for higher reviews.

I think:

1) Any review site that has ads from the bands/labels it reviews on the site can't be 100% legit.

2) It's always been pretty obvious that the ads on Pitchfork were consistent with their "best of" list. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

3) Who really cares? If Pitchfork introduces you to good music, who cares what they do? Don't take them so seriously. When they say an album is good, they are usually correct (as "correct" as an opinion can be). Bands that are lucky/talented enough to make their "best of" list will reap the rewards. Great bands who get passed by will have to look for alternative ways of marketing themselves. Pitchfork is popular for a reason. People like the site. It's only music.

What do you think?

Simplebits Catches the Pixies in Montreal

Those into web design may be familiar with Simplebits. Simplebits is award winning web designer and author, Dan Cederholm from Massachusetts. Dan thought the acoustics at the Pixies concert in Montreal were "horrible." I thought it sounded unbelievable. Maybe it was his spot.

I'm not surprised that Joanna Newsom, Fiery Furnaces, The Streets, and The Mountain Goats are topping his list. I am surprised Rilo Kiley didn't make it.

Wednesday was Commuting Hell Day

Wednesday December 1st, 2004 will go down as the scariest commuting day of my life.

I needed to get to 23rd St in Manhattan by 1:30 pm. I left Brooklyn around 12:30 after confirming that the F train derailment from the morning had been cleared up.

I got on an F, and made it to just before the West 4th stop when the train stopped in the tunnel for some time. The conductor kept announcing updates to the situation. First there was a train ahead. That changed to a "smoke situation." The "smoke situation" led to the air being shut off on the train. People started to worry. Finally the conductor said the smoke was only getting worse. We were to pull in to the station, evacuate the train and get to the surface.

We pulled in to a completely smoke-filled West 4th station. You had to hold your breath or you would cough and gag. It was my first experience with just how easy it is to succumb to smoke inhalation. Everybody from the train raced up the same stairs. As I fought my way up, I managed to get two breaths of smoke in...and lots of coughs out. Everyone was gagging. It was scary.

The smoke hadn't really reached the A train upstairs, and we were able to quickly transfer. Somehow I was only 10 minutes late to my destination. I had no idea what happened, but later found out there was a track fire that was related to the earlier derailment.

I commuted back home around 6:00. The trains were running again, but extremely slow. It took me three times longer than normal.

At 9:00 I took the subway back to Manhattan to see Nancy Sinatra at Joe's Pub. The ride there was uneventful. I stayed out for a while afterwards, and then decided to splurge. I got a taxi home. This led to EPISODE #2.

Lesson: When the first thing a taxi driver says to you is "Can you tell me which way to go. I am new," immediately remove yourself from the car.

It's a miracle that I made it home alive. My chances of survival were better in the smoke filled subway station. I don't know how someone who can not stay in a lane, stops at green lights, slows 75% to (purposely) change lanes, doesn't know right from left, and has no idea how to get from Houston St. to the Manhattan or Brooklyn Bridges (or anywhere for that matter), got a driver's and taxi license. He told me it was his 3rd day. He got silent when I asked how long he'd been driving at all.

The Datsuns @ Maxwells Friday

The Datsuns

I am not sure what I think of the Datsuns. They put on a decent show opening for the Pixies in Canada Friday night, and I really liked a few of the songs. They have a great stage presence and made good use of the awesome sound system. Mostly I'm amazed at how lucky they are to have been the opener for the Pixies on nineteen of their 2004 tour dates (including December 12th in NYC). They've been playing before crowds of 10-30,000 people every night.

They opened for the Donnas last night at Webster Hall. Friday night you can catch them at Maxwells (capacity 200) with Bad Wizard and Chelsea Smile.

I'm in Love with Montreal

Pulled over on the way to Montreal

Although only there for less than 48 hours, my new favorite place outside of NYC is Montreal.

I spent all of Friday commuting. I went from Brooklyn to Manhattan on a subway, from Manhattan to Jersey on a bus, from Jersey to Connecticut in a car, and finally from Connecticut to Montreal in another car. The drive from Connecticut to Montreal was six hours, but we were speeding. In fact, we (well, technically not me) got a six point ticket in upstate New York for doing 87 in a 65. ouch. (see pic above.)

We arrived Friday night just in time to get from my hotel in Old Montreal to my first Pixies show ever. I estimated the crowd at 20,000 people. The venue was a hockey stadium. Tickets were general admission with first-come-first-serve access to the floor and seats. The Datsuns and the other opening band were pretty good. The Pixies were amazing. The crowd won my heart. I dislike large venues as much as the next person, but this show broke that rule. There wasn't a bad seat in the house, and the sound was unbelievable. Thousands of beautiful Canadians were dancing in unison to the sound of the Pixies.

I made new friends, explored the city, and somehow managed to get a new perspective on life that I really needed right now. I meant to take lots of pictures, but got wrapped in the nightlife and didn't have enough time during my short stay. Montreal, also known as 'sin city,' is often compared to Las Vegas and Amsterdam.

I was surprised at just how prevalent French is there. Only one hour outside of U.S., and you could swear you were in France. They call it the "Paris of North America."

I'll be back soon.
