Bowery Ballroom Concert Update

So, you’ve got Broken Social Scene playing two nights (with their gig opening for the Pixies at Hammerstein in between) [see previous post]. If your decision on which one to go to comes down to the opener, consider this…

Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene called Alex Lukashevsky (opening the 13th) “one of the best songwriters Canada’s ever been blessed with.” Alex is also a member of Deep Dark United. Listen to them here.

Raising The Fawn (opening the 15th) are part of the “family.” Justin Peroff and John Crossingham, both of Broken Social Scene, are also in Raising the Fawn.

Interesting tidbit about the two Joanna Newsom, (Smog), & Weird War shows at the end of December. The three artists will will share the stage, playing round-robin style for several hours, ‘thus pleasing fans of all three bands simultaneously.’

Tomorrow is The Arcade Fire. Get there early to catch JinnersDirty On Purpose, and The Hidden Cameras. The Hidden Cameras were actually the original headliners of the show. About a week after it was announced, they became co-headliners. I think The Arcade Fire is now the only “headliner” (like it makes a difference anyway…).

Patti Smith and her band are playing December 29th, 30th, and New Years eve. Tickets are $40 a piece for the first two nights, and $55 for New Years. They are on sale now.

Friday is Hot Snakes. Everyone was freakin out when they played Knitting Factory and Northsix recently. Haven’t heard much about them since.

Sunday is Helmet. Part of me wants to go to that so bad. I used to love Helmet. It’s been “sold out” for a while, but tickets are available.

On November 18th you’ve got Kasabian. There doesn’t seem to be any hype surrounding them even though they’re huge in the UK. Maybe we can’t handle any more bands who are huge in the UK… In case you CAN handle more, consider that this is their only US date right now. Their album was supposedly released here yesterday, but neither Amazon or Insound has it.

November 21st: Minnie Driver. Ha.

November 23rd: Dogs Die in Hot Cars. I’m waiting to see if they can sell out Bowery Ballroom.

Not to be missed-hipster event on December 2nd – Inouk, Phoenix, Benzos, and Big City Rock.

Calexico plays December 7th. Not to be Missed.

Ted Leo is now playing two dates. December 11th & 12th.

December 16th is Joseph Arthur. He has a great voice. Listen to his CMJ KEXP performance.

Elefant, who recently played to a less-than-packed Mercury Lounge, are there on December 20th.

December 26th – 28th brings Fab Faux, the Beatles tribute band.
