Stream new Roger Waters Anti-War Songs

'Roger Waters, the co-founder and primary songwriter of the legendary rock band Pink Floyd, has written and recorded two important new songs, "To Kill The Child" and "Leaving Beirut," the artist's first new studio recordings since a pair of rarities--a demo of his composition "Flickering Flame" and his cover of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door"--appeared on an international compilation album, Flickering Flame: The Solo Years, Vol.1, in 2002. The last new album featuring original Roger Waters compositions to be released in the U.S. was his critically-acclaimed solo outing, Amused To Death, in 1992.'

More in the Best of 2004 Series
We can add three more "Best of" lists to the growing roster. Perhaps in the end, we can do a "Best of Best of 2004 album lists" list.
The first one comes from Paul at The Rub. His is one of the most eclectic lists I've seen. I might have to rush some of those albums into my playlist before the end of the year. That is, if and when, I do my own list. See Paul bravely diss Rilo Kiley and express his utter disdain for Bright Eyes.
Next comes Jason from One Louder. Fiery Furnaces, Arcade Fire, The Streets, and Franz Ferdinand are reduced to honorary mentions while albums by Air, Wilco, and PJ Harvey make the cut. Dungen? I still don't get people's fascination with that one.
Lastly, ffanatical press, a non-music blog, publishes their top 10 albums of 2004.

Cemetary Gates

Pantera, a band that made my high school years a lot more livable, holds a position high up as one of my favorite bands of all time.
Take a second to remember Dimebag Darrell, Damageplan, and anyone who's life ended too early in Ohio tonight.
lyrics to Cemetary Gates by Pantera:
The reverend he turned to me
Without a tear in his eyes
It's nothing new for him to see
I didn't ask him why
I will remember
The love our souls had
Sworn to make
Now I watch the falling rain
All my mind can see
Now is your (face)
Well I guess
You took my mouth
I gave it all away
Like the birth of a
New-found joy
This love would end in rage
And when she died
I couldn't cry
The pride within my soul
You left me incomplete
Memories now unfold.
Believe the word
I will unlock my door
And pass the
Cemetery gates
Sometimes when I'm alone
I wonder aloud
If you're watching over me
Some place far abound
I must reverse my life
I can't live in the past
Then set my soul free
Belong to me at last
Through all those
Complex years
I thought I was alone
I didn't care to look around
And make this world my own
And when she died
I should've cried and spared myself some pain...
Left me incomplete
All alone as the memories still remain
The way we were
The chance to save my soul
And my concern is now in vain
Believe the word
I will unlock my door
And pass the cemetery gates

BlogTorrent | BitTorrent for the Masses
BitTorrent has already revolutionized the P2P world. Now anyone with access to a web server (aka bloggers) can host their own BitTorrent server with the amazing new free software called BlogTorrent.
If you don't know what BitTorrent is yet, or if you think you know what it is, but haven't yet tried it, TRY IT NOW! You're being left behind.
For PC users, all you have to do is install this and then if you want to make your life easier, install this too. The first one is a juiced up version of the original bitTorrent client. The second one lets you download multiple torrents at once in ONE PROGRAM. You'll eventually see what I mean. Note: You need both for the second one to work. Once installed, you can click on a .torrent file on any site, and you will start downloading the stuff.
BitTorrent only works if you continue to share the file you downloaded after you are finished with the download, so as they say, "Keep your window open" when you are finished. When you have 100% of the files in the torrent, you are then a "seed." You'll notice every bitTorrent file comes with statistics on how many seeds, and how many leeches there are. A "leech" is someone with less than 100% of the file. Once you are a seed, stay a seed (keep your program open so people can continue to download off you). Without seeds, no one else can download. I shouldn't explain this because others have already done so. Try here for more info.
So as I was saying, BlogTorrent lets blogs be Torrent Trackers (servers basically). The other day we saw the launch of the More Cowbell BlogTorrent Tracker. Go there to download his Indie Christmas Mix (seen previously).
Today I present the BrooklynVegan BlogTorrent Tracker. I'm seeding a short video clip of the Arcade Fire at Bowery Ballroom to test it out. Let me know if you have any problems downloading. (by the way, you don't actually need any other torrent software to get started downloading from BlogTorrent. They will install a basic BitTorrent client on your computer the first time you use it if you choose. Theres more explanation over there)

Help Save Pale Male's Nest

'A famous red-tailed hawk known as Pale Male who built his nest above a cornice of an apartment building overlooking Central Park and was the subject of a documentary movie -- was evicted.
The nest where Pale Male and his companions had resided since 1993 was removed along with the metal spikes that provided support for the nest and protected it from the wind. (CNN)
Help Save Pale Male. The official Pale Male website suggests calling 311. Apparantly they had more information, but were forced to remove it from their site. hmmm. There's a vigil going on at the building (927 Fifth Ave) right now I think.

Pixies Discs: The Twelve Final Shows

The twelve final Pixies shows, which includes all eight NYC shows are being recorded and packaged as limited edition silver (not CD-R) CDs.
'Only 1,000 discs will be made of ten of the shows and 2,500 will be made of the show in Boston and the final show in NYC.
Each double-disc comes in limited-edition digipak packaging.'
For the low, low price of only $300 you can own all twelve of these valuable collector items. Who needs to eat? Seriously though, for only $25, a single one would probably make a great Christmas present...especially for someone who was at one of those shows.
The second disc in the series is the December 7th show in Washington DC. Read DCist's review of that show here.

NYC Concert Update
Those going to Yo La Tengo @ Maxwells tonight get a special Hannukah gift. Calexico (who I just got home from seeing at Bowery Ballroom) are the opener.
Me First and the Gimme Gimme Gimmes are playing Irving Plaza on January 9th. This show deserves it's own post. If you don't know who they are, go find out, cause you'll probably want to go. I won't be surprised if it sells out either.
December 16th at Knitting Factory is the Kiki & Herb CD preview party. Expect a performance by Herb and lots of celebrities.
The Onion Holiday party featuring Todd Barry and French Kicks is sold out, but Todd Barry, David Cross, Jon Benjamin, and special guests TBA @ Pianos on December 30th is not. That's because there are no advanced tickets.
Black Sheep plays The Lions Den on December 18th.
Raekwon plays The Lions Den on December 23rd.
John Mayer (who recently played Housing Works...crazy) is playing Webster Hall on December 28th and 29th.
Tickets are on sale for !!!'s two shows at Mercury Lounge on December 30th.
CocoRosie & Tilly and the Wall (pics) have been announced as the openers for Bright Eyes at The Town Hall on January 25th and 26th. I couldn't ask for a better show.
Murphy's Law is playing Continental New Years Eve. Should be crazy.
Thurston Moore plays Tonic with Jim O'Rourke on December 18th and Knitting Factory on February 6th.
Those that didn't qualify for the Motley Crue presale can get tickets for their March 3rd show at MSG starting this Saturday at 9am.
Duran Duran is back again again. At MSG April 13th. Tickets on sale Monday Dec. 13th.
The "Taste of Chaos" tour featuring The Used, Senses Fail, Underoath, My Chemical Romance, and Killswitch Engage hits Hammerstein Ballroom on February 24th.
And last, but not least, Ashlee Simpson will be gracing us with her presence at Hammerstein Ballroom on March 16th.

Nominees include:
BAND OF THE YEAR: Yellowcard, Taking Back Sunday, Something Corporate, Wilco, and Modest Mouse.
BEST MALE ROCK ARTIST: Ben Kweller, Ben Folds, Jason Mraz, Gavin DeGraw, and Damien Rice.

3 Days Till the Pixies Hit NYC
In the meantime, this audience (not the best) recording of their December 5th show in NJ should tide you over (FLAC)
From the Village Voice:
'When asked how the band's return after 12 years feels, Black Francis (or Frank Black, the guy who led the Catholics following the Pixies' breakup; or Charles Michael Kittredge Thompson IV, as he was named at birth) says, "It feels triumphant in the sense of like, 'Wow, people really did like us.' But it felt triumphant the first time around. We were a successful band, we had lots of roadies working for us, we made money, we recorded records, we went on tour, we played plenty of sold-out shows, and we didn't have day jobs." '

Guided By Voices Have Come and Gone

(image (c) 2004, Matthew Stecker)
I never really listened to Guided By Voices. It's not that I don't like them. I just never got in to them when they were making themselves legends. At this point I'm suffering from hard-to-start-liking-a-band-thats-been-around-forever-syndrome.
One symptom of HTSLABTBAF Syndrome is the feeling of having 'missed out'.
I definitely believe that good music is timeless, but even timeless music is not the same at a later time. It's hard to argue that the Pixies didn't make good music. But can an 18 year old Pixies fan understand what it was like to hear the Pixies before Nirvana ever existed? Will they still love the Pixies? Yes (the ages of reunion tour concert goers has proved that). Will they understand? No (ok, maybe)
Another reason for suffering from the syndrome is all the good new music that appears everyday. It seems impossible to keep up with everything, even if you're an obsessive-music-blogging-type. Result: too busy checking out the new stuff to 'bother' with the old stuff (especially if you can't even see them live anymore).
Maybe one day I'll change my mind (recover from said syndrome) and start educating myself GBV style. Sonic Youth was another one, that I have since recovered from. And if and when I do recover, I'll probably regret that I wasn't one of the thousands that experienced their last three NYC Shows ever (till the reunion) this past weekend at Irving Plaza.
Luckily for those interested, others are telling the story.

Calexico or Kimya Tonight
Tonight presents two great show options @ two of my favorite NYC venues.
1) Calexico @ Bowery Ballroom
'Calexico, a Tucson collective of musicians focused around Joey Burns and John Convertino, forged an eclectic identity through their exploration of Southwestern culture. Composer Ennio Morricone's spaghetti Westerns as well as Portuguese fado; Afro-Peruvian music; and '50s and '60s jazz, country, and surf music all factored into Calexico's music.' (mtv)
2) Kimya Dawson @ Knitting Factory
'Singer/songwriter Kimya Dawson is best known as part of the New York City anti-folk outfit the Moldy Peaches. In 2002, Dawson released her debut solo album, I'm Sorry That Sometimes I'm Mean, a collection of spare tunes sung to an acoustic guitar and Dawson's voice, which breaks with hurt over tales of abuse and longing....' (All Music)
It's unfortunate that I can't be two places at the same time. Calexico promises to be an amazing show by an amazing group who doesn't come around that often. Kimya lives here in NYC, so Calexico wins this one.
I thought Calexico would of sold out Bowery Ballroom no problem. Apparantly not. I know I reference the blogger's 'Top 40 bands in America list' a lot, but it's just too convenient...You'll find Calexico at # 12, almost hidden between Bruce Springsteen & Sonic Youth.

Joanna Newsom on the cover of Venus

Definitely one of the most beautiful magazine covers I've ever seen...
The new issue of Venus also features an interview with Sondre Lerche by The Modern Age.

The Decemberists @ Pure Volume
Pure Volume is a site that lets bands post songs for download and stream. The site, which caters mostly to punk & emo bands, has become real popular since the demise of MP3.com.
I always assumed that the actual band or label signed up for pages at Pure Volume. That's probably true most of the time, but the sign up process must not have many checks in place. I say that because I find it hard to believe that it was the Decemberists who created their page.
What's really weird about it is not just that the three posted songs are unreleased/bootlegs, but they also happen to be the exact three MP3's I posted on this site. That includes the version of Sporting Life I recorded in Atlanta.

Ted Leo & The Pharmacists

'For over ten years, Ted Leo has been one of the most progressive forces in East Coast independent music, with a unique combination of punk and folk, soul and hardcore, and tradition and experimentation.' (all music guide)
Currently touring in support of their new album, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists hit Ithaca, NY last night. The report from my brother is that they rocked to a sold out crowd at Cornell University . Whoever books the shows up there has good taste. It was less than a month ago that Arcade Fire played in the same room. That's pretty good for a town that gets skipped by 99% of touring bands.
My brother, who loved the show, was amazed at how much Ted reminded him of Aaron Scott, the vocalist of another band he likes called Marathon. (listen to Marathon here)
Like Aaron Scott who now lives in NY, Ted Leo is from New Jersey. That would be the reason the NY Post named their article on Ted in today's paper, Jersey Boy.
"It's a little distasteful to me the way 'The O.C.' makes and breaks band. It feels cheap," Leo says.
Read the rest of that article here.
And as the article points out, Ted will play Bowery Ballroom in NYC on December 11th and 12th. The 11th is sold out, but tickets are still available for the 12th.
Are Ted Leo and the Pharmacists really the greatest band in American today? Reviews of Shake the Streets are mixed. Bloggers love it. So does Tiny Mix Tapes, Splendid, and POPMatters. Pitchfork, cokemachineglow, and Stylus Magazine on the other hand, think it's good, but doesn't live up to the hype.
Before seeing them live and deciding for yourself, you can download and listen at the following locations:
Lots of mp3s at Ted's official site.
