Leaked Decemberists Tracks
I was about to post a link to Sweet Blasphemy, a blog that posted three songs off the new Decemberists album. But by the time I started writing this post, the songs were removed at the request of the Decemberists and replaced with this message.
I gave up on the post, but then took a quick look at another site, who, what do you know, posted two of the three songs himself. UPDATE: no more Decemberists tracks. sorry.
Thanks to more cowbell for the original heads up.
And if you like them, BUY IT when it comes out.

Drag City Christmas Party | Weird War, Smog

It's time for Joanna Newsom, (Smog), and Weird War at Bowery Ballroom. There are no openers. They're all on the stage at the same time, alternating songs. I've posted so many Joanna Newsom links in the past few weeks, I thought it was time for some (Smog) and Weird War.

Antony & The Johnsons

Ever since I first saw Antony perform in between Joanna Newsom and Devendra Banhart at Bowery Ballroom, I've been hooked on his unique sound. I regret not getting into him earlier, so that I might have caught one of his performances at St Anns Warehouse or anywhere else for that matter. Who knew that Antony had been partying and performing at the very places I often visited for the past twelve years? I wish I did.
I caught him one more time at the Neil Young tribute concert in Prospect Park over the summer. There were two more shows I was aware of since then, one being the Secretly Canadian CMJ showcase, but I couldn't make it to either. I also had no idea that he "performed at a benefit for Saint Ann's Warehouse with Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Debbie Harry and the Jazz Passengers" a week or two ago.
You can imagine then my happiness when I discovered not just one, but two upcoming Antony shows in NYC, and both at excellent venues.
1) Joe's Pub. Sunday January 9th, 9:30 pm. more info
2) Bowery Ballroom. Thursday February 24th more info
Antony & The Johnsons' new album, 'I am a Bird Now,' comes out on Secretly Canadian in February 2005. I'm listening to an advance copy right now, and it's beautiful.
A 3 song Ep entitled 'The Lake,' was released in November. The EP includes one song with Lou Reed on guitar and vocals. Secretly Canadian also reissued Antony & The Johnsons' 1998 debut album that originally came out on David Tibet of Current 93's label, Durtro.
If you haven't heard Antony before, I recommend you start with Cripple and The Starfish (mp3, right click, save target as)
Antony appeared on the Devendra Banhart curated CD, The Golden Apples of the Sun. Pitchfork liked the CD and they even liked the song Antony sang on it.

Scissor Sisters About to Take Over Hammerstein

The last 2 NYC Pixies shows happen this Saturday night. Less than 24 hours after the pixie dust settles, the Scissor Sisters will take over Hammerstein for their only home town show on their current tour (not counting Saturday Night Live last week). The show is sold out, and Craigslist isn't looking so good for those who want, but I'm sure the scalpers will be out in full force so give it a try. VHS or Beta opens. Get there early.
Newsday reports the story everyone has reported before: Scissor Sisters' danceable retro sound reaches the States after conquering England
At least Newsday knows where they're from. The Associated Press seems to think the Scissor Sisters are from Britian. If you're reading this Kerry, they're from New York.
Have they conquored middle america? Indianpolis approves.
Babydaddy is from Lexington, and Kentucky is proud.
NME has footage from their upcoming DVD and the dirt on their latest raunchy video.
Preorder the DVD at Amazon (it's cheap!)
And check out their recently released remix EP.

Colin Meloy of the Decemberists is playing solo at Fez on January 22nd. Tickets are on sale.
(thx to CV for the heads up)
"Colin Meloy, singer and songwriter for the band, will be heading out on a short, 9-date national tour in which he will be playing songs, Decemberist and otherwise, solo in intimate theaters and clubs in metropolitan areas all over the U.S. For this event, he's in the process of recording a tour-only EP of Morrissey rarities covers. To be entitled "Colin Meloy Sings. . . Morrissey," no less.
Carson Ellis, illustratrix-extraordinaire, and self-fashioned artist-officiale for the band will be on hand as well, selling exclusive prints and small original sketches at a very small price."

Back from the Pixies/BSS show

I don't know what to say. The Pixies were good, but it wasn't as exciting as seeing them in Montreal. That wasn't true for everyone. The crowd generally seemed really happy. One guy I met was going to six shows, and was just as enthused tonight as he supposedly was the past two. Maybe I was just tired, though I think the venue had a lot to do with it.
Hammerstein Ballroom is a big, crowded, scary venue. People on the floor were stuffed in like sardines from the front to the back-back-back area. You can't really dance. Beer is $7.00 for Coors, or $8.00 for Corona (plus tip). A red bull and vodka is $10. Tickets were $50. The live CDs are $28 (with shipping). No digital cameras. etc. etc. (Those going to see Ashlee in March should take note!)
On a more positive note...the place was only about half full (postive for me) for Broken Social Scene (or "Boring Social Scene" as my uninterested companion called them), and I loved them again. Some have commented that the technical difficulties ruined Wednesday night's Bowery show for them. This show was free of that nonsense. The set was short and sweet. No talking. No pauses. All playing. Huge Sound. Huge Stage. I liked it (even if previously mentioned companion said that he was "embarrassed to be white right now"). Only criticism is that they need to turn up their vocals. Oh yeah...BSS was very thankful to be playing the show (they talked a little).
Here are some more reviews from the shows this week
'I suppose you have heard of The Pixies and Mission of Burma by now right. Well tonite's show was damn fantastic. We were on the 8th "row" and had a great view of Black Francis' girth. I must say it's a toss up between this and Wilco at Radio City for Best Show of 2004.'
more @ Brookln Calling
'I don't know why, but even though they played a great show, I'm having difficulty being enthusiastic about the whole thing. I guess you just can't go home again, y'know? Also, Hammerstein Ballroom is way too big for a rock show. I hate that place.'
more @ bitter defeat
Part of the amazing sold out performance at Hammerstein Ballroom on December 13. All the favorites were played with the exception of "Head On"...I think that Frank Black (aka Black Francis) might fall over dead soon from the strain, but it makes a better show!
more @ Helmusblog and here
Last night they played about 30 songs in rapid fire sequence, all of which were killer. It wasn't until the very end of the show when Joey Santiago goofed up (possibly purposely), "La La Love You" that any of the songs sounded less than brilliant.
more @ extrawack!
Last night was hands down the best show I've seen all year. Charles was in fine form, his voice an amazing instrument of humor and sheer madness. "Tame" was epic; the highlight of the set for me.

Kasabian Playing Irving Plaza

Kasabian, the latest British sensation, are playing Irving Plaza with The Music on February 17th. They are definitely the least hyped big British band in NY right now. They recently played Bowery Ballroom and I don't think it sold out.
Their album isn't out in the USA, so I don't think they're on the radio yet, but I'm pretty sure you'll be hearing them on KRock by the time February 17th comes around.
NME is the place to find out more about Kasabian. You can even listen to the whole album and watch a video.
Stereogum didn't go to the Bowery show, but his friend did.
Ultragrrrl was at the Bowery show and said it was actually pretty packed.
Pitchfork no like, but the Guardian says they're the second coming of The Stone Roses. (speaking of The Stone Roses)
'Any band who thinks it’s a good idea to sound like the Happy Mondays should be immediately killed, chopped into small pieces and sprinkled liberally into the nearest shark-infested waters.' Drowned in Sound don't mess around
The BBC says "Kasabian play Stone Roses / Happy Mondays indie rock with catchy choruses mixed with Chemical Brothers style beats. The songs run smoothly into each other with well crafted synth heavy musical interludes"
Tickets are not on sale yet, although they are for the same show in Boston.

Freak Folk & Pixies in the NY Times
I know it sounds like a game of Dungeons & Dragons, but actually it's just the NY Times talking about our favorite music.
In Once Upon a Time, There Was This Really Loud Band, you'll find a review of Saturday's Pixies concert.
Freak Folk's Very Own Pied Piper is a story about Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Animal Collective, and Adem.
I must admit that I never heard the term "freak folk" before, but I like it... and I don't like it. I like it because it seems like a great description for what has quickly become one of my favorite genres of music. I don't like it becuase it's just that type of negative stereotyping that causes these artists not to be taken seriously. I mean what's up with the grammys? (you're thinking, 'What's up with YOU? Screw the GRAMMYS.'). There are a total of four "folk" categories in the grammys, yet I don't see the names Newsom or Devendra anyhwere in the nominations.

Fiery Furnaces Update

photo from jenyk.com
I've been meaning to post this for days. I don`t think I've let you down yet because it appears that 'Teaching The Indie Kids To Dance,' still has the sort-of-new Fiery Furnaces tracks he posted available for download. I have no idea how long he keeps songs up, so get them quick. Fluxblog had another track off the same album, but removed it almost immediately when he found out about TTIKTD's post.
The songs in question are off The Fiery Furnaces's new 10 song EP that comes out on January 11th. The EP is a mix of b-sides, rarities, and live tracks. There's no new songs there, but there is some stuff you may not have heard yet. More information on the EP and their next LP and Australian tour and grandma and what not can be found at TinyMixTapes and Pitchfork.
I'm listening to the entire EP as we speak, and I can tell you that if you are a fan of the Fiery Furnaces, you will like it. It's the perfect thing to hold you over until their next LP is released. You can preorder from Insound. Use coupon code 'fiery ep' to get 15% off your order.
In the above paragraph I used the word "if" before the phrase, "you are a fan of the Fiery Furnaces." If you are NOT a fan of the Fiery Furnaces, what is the reason? If it's because you havent't heard them yet, it's not too late... You'll want to get their first album, Gallowsbird Bark, and then the one that's been topping more than a few best of 2004 lists, Blueberry Boat. Both available at Insound. They are both great. Blueberry Boat is also more than great. Pitchfork said so. Not everyone agreed, but I do (note the foreshadowing of my own upcoming 'best of 2004' list).
jenyk's like what's up? I've been trying to tell you this for how long?
KEXP's got the in-Studio streaming hook-up.
Tropical Iceland is a song on the new EP. Watch the video here.

'That's how I'm feeling at this precise moment in time. I just got home from the Pixies show at the Hammerstein and it totally made all my senses erupt. I'm so effing happy. I'm speechless (hey there's a first for everything).
more @ Bitten By The Big Apple
"As soon as we stepped into the Hammerstein Ballroom and I heard the Pixies, something happened to me - I had this weird feeling of walking into another world, where the Pixies were playing and my beloved were all close by and getting along smashingly."
more @ Walking Vixen
It was fun seeing the Pixies. There was a lot of anticipation in seeing them actually play and it was a good show but not amazing.
more @ blucarbnpinwheel
"Last night I went to check out the Pixies at the Hammerstein Ballroom with my friend Alexis who is an associate fashion editor at Vanity Fair."
more @ my laid back pimp walk is linear by design.
"Simply stunning."
more @ Verbose Coma

An Arcade Fire Christmas

I was going to keep this one a secret until a little closer to Christmas time, but the cat is already out of the bag. There does exist a bootleg CD mix of unreleased, live, pre-release-mixed, and holiday songs by the Arcade Fire (and Arcade fire members). According to Jeddeth, who also has the complete track list on his site, the CD was given out as a gift to their friends for Christmas 2002. It may be possible even though "In the Backseat," which appears on the Christmas CD, wasn't officialy released until 2004.
The reason this was such a big secret was because, like all Christmas gifts, you're not supposed to know what you're getting until you get it. And thanks to a super-Santa-like-blogger from Minneapolis (with the help of some of his blogger bandwidth providing elves) this CD should be coming down a BlogTorrent chimney near you very soon.
