The Fall playing Knitting Factory Thursday
The Fall formed in 1976 to become one the most unique bands in modern music. Headed by the always unpredictable Mark E. Smith The Fall basically created the post punk sound before post punk even happened. This very special show captures The Fall fresh off of recording new material right here in Tribeca. Expect debuts of new material mixed with well known favorites.
The Fall, Knitting Factory Main Space, NYC, Thursday Feb 10th, 12am
Check out their latest release, 50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong: 39 Golden Greats, which Pitchfork gave a 9.3.

Pre-Order M.I.A.'s Arular
The first 25 people who pre-order M.I.A's 'Arular' will receive a FREE 'Galang' E.P. from Insound.
Already adopted as the next darling of the press, this album is assured a large territory in the musical landscape of 2005. It started with the cover of the Fader this past fall, a review of a UK single in the New York Times, and more recently a two page New Yorker feature. Through an amazingly organic word of mouth about her debut single Galang, M.I.A. has already become a household name to the hip glitterati of the world. Sage Francis vs Will Oldham | A Healthy Distrust

Indie hip-hop artist, Sage Francis, releases his latest album, A Healthy Distrust, on February 8th. The album features collaborations with Will Oldham, Saul Williams, Danger Mouse, Alias, and Joe Beats.
In the tradition of Run DMC/Aerosmith, Anthrax/Public Enemy, and the now classic Judgment Day soundtrack (damn, I'm old), Will (aka Bonnie Brince Billy) and Sage team up for the ultimate in indie rock rap on the album's second track.

M.I.A. Tonight | Knitting Factory, Misshapes

Tonight is the sold out M.I.A. & Duplo show at Knitting Factory in NYC.
She played Toronto Wednesday night, and the bloggers were there in full force. The Internet is full of pictures, video and reviews.
The above photo came from Them Finest, who's got many more where that came from (including a video). It was Zoilus who pointed me to that link. More info at The Torontoist. I'm not sure I have a lot to look forward to tonight. Pop (all love) says:
Her and Diplo may work wonders together off stage (hint, hint), but they've yet to find bliss on. Soon though. Maybe. Hopefully.
Read a review of 'Piracy Funds Terrorism' at ghetto postage.
The after party for the Knitting Factory show tonight is at Misshapes where M.I.A. will be making an appearance along with DJs Jarvis Cocker and Steven Mackey from Pulp. Melody Nelson spins too.

David Byrne Played with The Arcade Fire

I just got home from the second night in a row of The Arcade Fire in NYC. It was my fifth time seeing them live, and it was absolutely the best show yet.
Some factors that made it the best:
1) Irving Plaza is a great venue (Clear Channel aside).
2) Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy) on violin. I hope he becomes a permanent member of the band, though I doubt it.

3) They weren't tired, and no technical difficulties. When they played Mercury Lounge, they drove in from Canada that night. At Webster Hall they were late and stressed because of their Conan O' Brien appearance.
4) The crowd was not dead. Limited dancing like all crowded NYC shows, but the crowd was going as wild as they knew how.

5) DAVID BYRNE of the Talking Heads performed Naive Melody with the band (as David Bowie watched from the balcony - pic below)

Shows, Shows, Shows & Stuff
So many shows. So little time.
...that Goldie Lookin Chain is playing Mercury Lounge in March (no advanced tix). Their album is released in the USA for the first time around that time.
...and that Stars and Apostle of Hustle are playing Mercury Lounge on March 8th. Ticketweb (apparently) sold out in a few hours. Try the box office. Here are some pics from last time Apostle of Hustle was here (not counting the BSS shows where they played some AOH songs). Check out even more recent BSS/Stars/Apostle of Hustle picturess at Chromewaves.
...and that Go! Team tix are on sale.
More dates at Central Village.
Morningwood is playing Southpaw Feb. 22nd. That's a few days after they open for The Music and Kasabian at Irving Plaza.
Queens of the Stone Age is playing with Eagles of Death Metal. (my last post)
Bloc Party is not sold out yet. Arcade Fire's bowery show didn't sell out for a month either. With the Fiery Furnaces playing the night after Bloc Party, it looks like I'll be living at Bowery Ballroom for three days.
The Doves show is sold out, but most of these aren't.
Bonnie Prince Billy will be here in April.
The Mars Volta make it to NYC in May.

Pitchfork pretty much likes Chin Up Chin Up
Pitchfork finally reviews Chin Up Chin Up...
Chin Up Chin Up's sound owes much to artists like 90 Day Men, June of 44, Slint, and Tortoise; the album's busy guitar parts, xylophones, and unwieldy song titles all scream math-rock. Yet on this record, the band sound like they're growing out of and beyond that scene.

Pitchfork Likes Magneta Lane
O Canada, how do you produce so many great bands? Maybe it's the cleaner air, the relatively liberal culture, the cold, the hockey, or the feeling that you're really better than your southern neighbor who gets all the attention
Magneta Lane can be filed under "corking pop", albeit with a bit o' punk-- mostly manifested in their incredible efficiency and high tempos-- thrown in for good measure.

Help Save Tonic
From Tonic Management:
Since 1998 Tonic has been a haven for creative music. We have helped nurture the vital community of musicians and audiences who keep this music alive. Now we are in danger of closing and ask you to help us keep Tonic alive.
Over the past few years we have suffered a series of blows: our rent has doubled since 1998, our insurance costs have tripled, we've been robbed, and we've been plagued by the expense of maintaining a building in ill repair - including the collapse of our main sewer line. Any of these things would be challenging on their own but together they've taken a more serious toll and we are now facing the threat of eviction.
A number of outstanding musicians have come forward to help save Tonic and throughout February we will be holding a series of fundraising concerts. If Tonic has been an important venue to you, we ask that you please attend as many of these concerts as possible.
Those who cannot attend but would like to help, please consider making a contribution. For Tonic to survive we will need to raise a upwards of $100,000 in the next few weeks. Only with your support can Tonic continue playing its role in presenting this important music to its fans.
Our deepest thanks.

Arcade Fire @ Bowery Ballroom | Pics

After the Arcade Fire played Bowery Ballroom on November 11th, I posted three pictures. I posted photos from their previous CMJ show at Mercury Lounge just a day before that, so I figured I'd wait until next time they got to town to post the rest of the Bowery Ballroom ones. Now they're here, so here they are.

Tonight's (February 1st, 2005) show was supposed to be at Bowery Ballroom again, but due to overwhelming demand, the show was moved to the much larger Webster Hall. Tomorrow, February 2nd, you can catch them at Irving Plaza, if you can get a ticket. If you're not at Webster Hall, or after you get home, don't miss their scheduled appearance on the Conan O' Brien show.

More than one celebrity was in the audience at this show.
The Hidden Cameras played this show too.

KIKI & HERB Will Die For You at Carnegie Hall | Decemberists cover
Kiki and Herb's final performance at Carnegie Hall is now a double CD. And as cool as I think it is that they covered the Decemberists, I really only wrote that to grab your indie rock attention. It's true. They cover "I was Meant for the Stage," not to mention "When Doves Cry," and "Total Eclipse of the Heart" in what has been described as "an emotionally exhausting, career-capping show."
The CD is officially released on Feb. 1st, and you can order your copy from CD Baby. (where you'll find a much longer description).
For even more info, and to download some tracks, check out Bride of Bloggenstein and Ultrasparky.

Conor Oberst Lives on the Lower East Side
I missed this one two weeks ago...
At the Mercury Lounge, Oberst slinked around unnoticed, unbothered, just another shaggy-haired, hoodie-loving hipster clinging to his bottled beer.
Bright Eyes front man Conor Oberst is the indie-rock champion of Omaha. So what’s he doing living on the Lower East Side?
-----
UPDATE: Read about Jen's missed encounter with Conor
And (semi-related) from Gawker:
spotted 1/25 at the first bright eyes show at town hall: ben kweller sporting an overgrown hipster mop, devendra banhart making out with a pretty girl in the orchestra during bright eyes’ set, helena christenson purchasing tilly and the wall merchandise, ebon moss-bachrach from porn and chicken and mona lisa smile with a girl i recognized — perhaps rachel mcadams from mean girls?
