Saw the Dears @ Mercury | Missed Kaiser Chiefs
photo of The Dears from Stereogum

Last night, Montreal's The Dears played a sold out show at Mercury Lounge in NYC. Benzos, and local favorite, Saints and Lovers, opened the show. File this show under "didn't live up to the hype." The Dears' set started out strong with a few good songs, but quickly faded into long jams that didn't hold the attention of the crowd. By the time they left the stage, the place was half-empty.
Benzos sounds a lot like Radiohead. Saints and Lovers impressed as usual. It's just too bad more people didn't get there in time to catch them.
The blogosphere was out in full force. I didn't bring my camera, but photos and reviews are everywhere.

More in the Monitor left after five songs. ouch.
Daily Refill, who interviewed the Dears for Gothamist just a few days earlier, says she wouldn't believe the hype, unless morrissey worship is hott in '05
The Wicked wasn't so disappointed.
She provides pictures of all three bands:
The Dears
Benzos
Saints and Lovers
Central Village and I pretty much agree exactly.
Stereogum provides more pics.
Aeki Tuesday should have more pics and a review soon.
The Dears left the stage around 1:00. I rushed over to Tribeca Grand to try and catch the Kaiser Chiefs, but got there a second too late to even see one song.
The Modern Age was there, and she promises more info in the near future. oh well.

Yes, this whole show was a big disappointment and one act was more tiresome than the next. The Saints and Lovers Hype (courtesy of NYC bloggs) is definitely not justified. Ever hear the term "shooting blanks." That would have been a great title for this event.

they're not brilliant (yet) but quite talented. listen to the mp3s on their site and give them time.
