Black Crowes New Dates | Tix for sale

Like the Pixies before them, the Black Crowes added two more shows to their March stint at Hammerstein Ballroom. That makes seven shows total (Pixies played 8). The added shows, which went on sale today, are 3/29 and 3/20, and there are at least a few tickets left right now.

Kimya Dawson | Internet Archive

Kimya Dawson Fellow Kimya Dawson fan, Largehearted Boy, brought to my attention the addition of Kimya Dawson to the Internet Archive. Currently two shows are available for download:

2005-01-09, Portland [mp3,ogg,flac]
2004-09-09, Falmouth [mp3,ogg,flac]

If you haven't checked out the archive yet, you're missing out. Basically artists agree that their live shows can be posted there, and the archive hosts the files for free in MP3, lossless (FLAC, SHN), and streaming format.

Other recent additions to the archive include Magnolia Electric Co., Liars, Rana (no shows posted yet), A Silver Mt Zion, The Soundtrack of Our Lives, The Blood Brothers, John Vanderslice, and a whole bunch more. In total, they're currently hosting 20,249 shows by 857 artists.

On their homepage, they highlight some "staff pics," in which this Ben Lee show from Knitting Factory in June is featured. (see Ben at Tonic next week). I agree. Check it out, Modest Mouse cover included.

The Giraffes Benefit Show | Knitting Factory, NYC

The Giraffes The Giraffes frontman (and Knitting Factory Staffer) Aaron Lazar was stricken with a double heart attack a few weeks back (btw there were no drugs involved) leaving him with hospitable bills estimated at about one million smackers. On this night the best of NYC rock come together to lend a hand to one of its finest.

"The Giraffes are uhm unique? Despite what I had seen when they were offstage, I thought this might after all be just an act, and not necessarily an original one. But that sure was a bottle of Jack Daniels they were passing around on stage before, after and during songs. I could smell it. And maybe that joint was really just a rolled cigarette, but they were still blatantly breaking the law, Breaking The Law ... and there was also no doubt they were seriously and severely fucked up. Theres a theory that a great frontman for a rock n roll band has to be at least 50% jackass to carry it off effectively. Whether tossing his drink cup at fellow band members, spilling it into the crowd or flicking his lit cigarette towards the crowded bar, Aaron Lazar filled the bill with percentage points to spare. Playing the loveable Lucifer, Lazar is charming and clever as hes being cunning and cruel. Imagine an unpretentious Jim Morrison or Henry Rollins who just happen to be smashed out of their heads. The band behind him - a cross between the best/worst of Motorhead and Metallica. Yet even with Damien Paris screaming, over the top lead runs, Drew Totolos kick-ya-in-the-nuts drumming and John Rosenthals bad-ass bass, youd be wrong if you labeled the Giraffes a metal band. It just isnt that easy with Lazars crafty delivery in the mix." - Neon NYC

Baby Dayliner, Bling Kong, Hair Supply

Last night I passed out after work. That means I didn't make it to Mercury Lounge to catch Baby Dayliner, Bling Kong and Hair Supply. damn. All three are on my list of bands to see.

------

Southern describes Baby Dayliner:

Fun Funny, it's funny, a raid on your heart, he sings, Fun funny, it's funny a raid on your soul! Leonard Cohen's songcraft meet's Jay Z's beats and Al Green's peformance style? Is this a 21st century Frank Sinatra?

Watch a Baby Dayliner video. Raid (large movie file, best to download to your computer)

Own the same song.

------

Jasper describes Bling Kong:

Bling Kong is more than a band, more than an experience, more than a spectacle - it is a an absolute freakin' monster in every sense of the word.

And since a picture is worth a thousand words, check them out.

Listen to them here.

------

Hair Supply are members of Satanicide playing Air Supply covers, and since Satanicide rules, I have to give Hair Supply a try. More in my last post about them.

Antony | The Reviews are In

Last night I saw Antony perform one song (yes, only one :( ) at the Tibet House fundraiser (pics and review to follow). Philip Glass called him one of the most talented young singer/songwriters performing today (or something like that). Today, Pitchfork awarded Antony's new album an 8.6. That's higher than they gave LCD Soundsystem.

M.I.A. & Arcade Fire Concert Recap

The ARcade Fire @ Irving Plaza

Last week included three exciting shows. It started with back-to-back Arcade Fire, the second of which is now legendary around the world thanks to the appearance of David Byrne, who also blogged about it (via Stereogum).

They did a cover of Talking Heads song when I saw them at Bowery Ballroom (Naïve melody)...we communicated by Email afterwards, so asking me to join on that tune was sort of natural. I loved it. Their crowd was lovely and energized as was the band and the room felt like it was filled with genuine music lovers- the word of mouth and internet buzz has all been fairly natural. - David Byrne

The above photo is from that show. The rest of the photos, and audio of David Byrne singing with them is here.

My photos from the night before at Webster Hall are here. Lots more where those came from for a future post.

Next came M.I.A. While watching the show, I was thinking "Is she lip-syncing?" Then after the show, my friend asked "Was she lip-syncing?" I said "maybe, but there's no way I'm putting that in print without proof." Well, someone else did it for me. Check out Sepia Mutiny for the rest of the story.

LCD Soundsystem After returning from a tour around the world, LCD Soundsystem will play at Bowery Ballroom in NYC on April 2nd. Tickets are not on sale yet, but I expect that to change shortly.

Their much anticipated self-titled album comes out in North America on February 15th. You can pre-order it from Insound now.

Bloc Party | Silent Alarm

Silent Alarm Bloc Party's new album, 'Silent Alarm,' will be released in the U.K. on February 14th. We here in the U.S., have to wait until March 22nd (to buy our copies).

The buzz in blogland is already that Silent Alarm will likely be one of the most popular records of the year. Decide for yourself. Stream the entire album.

NME says:

Bloc Party aren’t just hoping, they’re trying. Maybe it’s over-long at 13 tracks but that’s just us being picky. ‘Silent Alarm’ is the unpigeonholeable soundtrack to 21st-century life as a cast-off. In a world of posers, fakers and bandwagon-jumpers, Bloc Party are unquestionably ‘4 real’. They never shy away from showing their truest feelings, even if those are of vulnerability or weakness. It’s this honesty which has spoken to people and will speak to a hell of a lot more when ‘Silent Alarm’ rings out beyond the desks of music journalists.

Preorder Silent Alarm from Insound. (or from Amazon UK for those overseas)
(the first 50 Insound pre-orders will get a free UK CD single)

Garbage | Bleed Like Me

Garbage is back.

From Wikipedia:

Garbage's next album, 'Bleed Like Me,' will be released on April 11th 2005 (April 12th in North America).

The official track listing as follows:

Bad Boyfriend
Run Baby Run
Right Between the Eyes
Why Do You Love Me
Bleed Like Me
It's All Over But The Crying
Boys Wanna Fight
Sex is Not The Enemy
Metal Heart
Why Don't You Come Over
Happy Home.

It originally had the working title 'Hands on a Hard Body,' but Shirley Manson announced that the band had come up with a new title, 'Bleed Like Me,' that better fits the band's improved dynamic following a period of tension and crisis in October 2003. Shirley has also said BLM will comprise more hard rock and be a return to Garbage's roots after the eclectic experiment of beautifulgarbage, an announcement that has resonated with most fans.

A compilation of b-sides and non-album tracks by the band, which had been planned by them prior to even beautifulgarbage, is also reported to be in the works.

More info at Garbage Box.
