Vice Records to Release Annie Anniemal in the USA
Vice Records is hot. They're already about to make a mint by releasing one of the best albums of the year in the U.S.A. Yes, I mean Bloc Party's Silent Alarm. Now we can also thank them for the forthcoming domestic release of Annie's Anniemal (still one of my favorite iPod albums). Stay tuned for the exact date.
In the meantime, Anniemal is set to be released in the UK on March 7th. The Heartbeat single will come out about two weeks earlier.
The new UK Annie website has a wealth of information ("news," a "blog" AND a "Diary"), videos, and at least five streaming songs from Anniemal.

Antony sits in with CocoRosie

Last night (Feb. 24th, 2005), Antony and friends played another unforgettable show at Bowery Ballroom in NYC. It went something like this:
CocoRosie opens --> Teya (spelling?) joined CocoRosie for a few songs --> Antony joined CocoRosie for their last song ---> Johanna Constantine opens Antony's set with an interpretive dance number --> Antony & The Johnsons headline (Joan as Policewoman is a Johnson) --> Rufus Wainwright joins them for "What Can I Do" ---> Boy George joins them for "You are my Sister" ---> Antony & The Johnsons only played a one song encore (the crowd definitely wanted more)
Bowery (not so) nicely asked me not to take any photos during Antony's set, so I didn't. I saw some people snapping pictures though. If you have any, send me a link, or send them to me and I'll post them. All the photos you see here were taken during CocoRosie's set.

Devendra Banhart @ Tonic, NYC | Pics

Devendra Banhart, joined by Tarantula, half of CocoRosie (Devendra's girlfriend?), Will (is my friend), and a few more characters who I unfortunately can't name, played Tonic in NYC Monday night (Feb. 21st, 2005) to help raise money for the ailing club.
It was a very laid back show with lots of improvising, and a bunch of covers. I hope Devendra's fame and looks aren't going to his head, because he covered a song by Charlie Manson. The highlight of the show was a cover of Antony's "Fistul of Love." Obviously I was very, very, very, very, very, very, very excited about that.

Misfits Reunion @ Danzig show in NY, Boston, and PA
Was it just three days ago that I was crying like a baby at the cost of a ticket to see Danzig at Spirit? Well, he's obviously reading this blog. I believe I said:
Glenn, what have you done for me lately??? Why should I spend $30 (+ service charges) to see you at Club Spirit (of all places!).? Why? At least throw me a bone with an opener I actually heard of
Ask and you shall receive. As reported on Aversion.com,
Two Misfits principals will share a stage once again to relive the legendary punk act's glory days.
Glenn Danzig and Doyle Von Frankenstein announced they'll play a 30-minute set at three shows next week. Since The Misfits fell apart in the early '80s, the duo's only shared a stage once before, for a pair of shows last year. While Danzig's solo tour schedule precludes any real Misfits reunion, it's a lot closer than the hodgepodge lineup that usually tours under the Misfits moniker.
Danzig and Von Frankenstein will play their Misfits set at:
Feb. 28 - Roxy Theatre, Boston
March 1 - Spirit Performance Center, New York
March 2 - Electric Factory, Philadelphia

Mike Doughty @ Housing Works, NYC | Pics

Ex-Soul Coughing frontman, and blogger, Mike Doughty played three solo shows in New York City (where he lives) last week. Two were opening for the Polyphonic Spree, and the third is the one from which the photos accompanying this text came from... the monthly benefit concert series at Housing Works Used Book Cafe on Crosby St in SOHO.
The show, which took place on Friday Feb. 18th, 2005, featured opening acts Damon and Naomi, and Emiliana Torrini. All money raised went/goes to causes related to homeless people with aids. I previously posted the photos of Damon & Naomi and Emiliana Torrini from the same show.
I thought Mike was pretty good, partly because it's great to hear his distinguishable voice that made Soul Coughing so appealing. Even better, he did at least three Soul Coughing covers. While his playing and voice are really good, I couldn't help but be troubled by his lyrics. This one stuck out the most in my mind after I left:
sunkeneyed girl on delancey st
bulletproof glass in the KFC
so keep the man safe in his paper hat
keep the wrong hands off the biscuit fortune
Did I mention he was just signed to the Dave Matthews-co-owned ATO Records? Expect an appearance by Dave on the forthcoming album.

Damon & Naomi @ Housing Works, NYC | Pics

Damon and Naomi played Housing Works Used Book Cafe on Friday, February 18th, 2005. I was pretty bored during their performance. Damon told a story before every song. Their resume was the only thing that kept me somewhat interested. Damon and Naomi are 2/3 of the now defunct Galaxie 500 (the other 1/3 is in Luna), they collaborate with the Japanese band Ghost, Pitchfork just gave their latest album an 8.0, and Mike Doughty of the now defunct Soul Coughing (the headliner at this show) said how excited he was to be playing with them because Galaxie 500 was the first band he went to see at (the endangered) CBGB in 1989 when he first moved to NYC.
Emiliana Torrini opened the show. I previously posted those pictures. More on this show, including mp3's of Emiliana's performance, at The Oh So Quiet Show.

Bloc Party is the Best Motherf*ckin Band in the World

That's how I felt last night as Bloc Party rocked the stage at the "legendary" (Bloc Party called it that, not me) Motherfucker party at Roxy in NYC. From where I was standing (dancing) it seemed the entire crowd was in agreement (Hillary Duff included).
I don't work on President's day, so I didn't take any pictures. Luckily both Bronxxx of Last Night's Party and The Cobra Snake were in attendance. Above and below photos from Last Night's Party. Cobra Snake didn't post his yet, so look at his pictures of Beck and Har Mar Superstar instead. Then head over to Central Village for an in depth review of the evening.

Hillary Duff is Following Me Around
I admit, I don't even know who Hillary Duff is, though I've heard the name. It took me a while to catch on to the Paris Hilton phenomenon, and then Jessica Simpson, and even Lindsey Lohan. The truth is, I still don't totally know what Lindsey Lohan does, though I know she performed in Times Square on New Years Eve and Thighs Wide Shut is a huge fan. I think Hillary Duff fits into that web somehow.
What makes the situation so much weirder, is that Hillary must know who I am. She must have heard I had plans to stop by Misshapes, LIT and Motherfucker this weekend, because she also attended all three parties. She got it all wrong though. I never made it to Misshapes, and Har Mar and I were chillin at LIT on Saturday night, NOT Friday night. By Sunday, she finally found me at Motherfucker (where she was seen hangin with her supposed boyfriend from Good Charlotte), but we never crossed paths (or did we? I wouldn't have known).
Though I didn't get a chance to speak with her, my friend Mike had a run-in. Mike managed to procure one of the free disco ball keychains that Motherfucker staff was throwing into the crowd after Bloc Party left the stage. As Hillary passed by him, he handed it to her (as a sign of his love?). As she started to walk away, the Good Charlotte dude grabbed it out of her hand, and threw it back at him. What a dick!
Gawker reports on the situation. (Just don't call me a "hipster")

Har Mar Superstar Touring and More
Saturday night I found myself, as I often do, at LIT Lounge in NYC. Seeing celebrities in NYC is no big deal, but I still couldn't help but be starstruck at who was hanging out amongst the commoners that evening. Yes, It was Har Mar Superstar himself.
This prompted me to see what Har Mar's been up to, and here it is in his own words:
-------
Hey Everyone:
It's been a pretty hectic New Year so far, but you probably have no idea what I've been up to unless you've been anywhere near Hollywood and Cahuenga in the past few months. I just bought a place, so I've been taking time off to be domestic and not at all entertaining. Pretty boring for you, but awesome for me. My best friends Lucky Jeremy and Dirty Preston are both living with me, so life is good.
Within the next 4 to 8 months, you'll start humming along to a lot of pop songs that I had a hand in writing. The details are all top secret right now, but, in time, I'll be able to reveal who I've been lending my magcal lyrical and melody talents to.
After a few Los Angeles dates and a showcase spot at SXSW, I'll be hitting the road with Ben Lee on a co-headlining US tour between March 21st and May 4th. Details will be posted soon. Check out Ben's new album at www.ben-lee.com. I got to sing on it, and I love it. I'll be touring the US a lot in 2005, with the occasional UK jaunt popping up here and there. I really hope to get back to Australia and Japan soon, too. Be patient. I'm only one person.
Until then, you might see me at the NME awards, in the background of some picture in Rolling Stone, or at a Poquito Mas salsa buffet. None of this is confirmed though. Stay tuned.
Love,
Har Mar Superstar
