Joanna Newsom News | Stream| Download | Read

Joanna Newsom in Fader magazine

First and foremost, this post was motivated by a beautiful new Joanna Newsom streaming performance and interview at KCRW. You have to listen to the interview. so good. so cute. When you're done with that, here's another stream in Dutch (via fan site).

Then there was Joanna's recent network television debut on the Jimmy Kimmell show. Again. so good, and so lucky I was to catch it. Although listed on two blogs I read, I had no idea it was going to be on when I got from Antony and CocoRosie at Bowery Ballroom. I leave the TV on for my dog, and coincidentally it was turned to the right station and was about to start right when I got home. A perfect ending to that night.
Does anyone have a video of it, or know where to download? I can't find one, but here are some photos.

Third up is this link from Largeheated Boy: photos, audio and video from her Noicepop performance on Feb. 26th, 2005 in San Francisco. Here's a review from that show, and an article published before the show.

Next comes the news of her upcoming (mostly European) tour dates, including the show she's playing as I write this just six hours away at the Andy Warhol museum in Pittsburgh. Pitchfork has the info. Most dates are with Six Organs of Admittance who's playing in NYC tonight. Missing that one too.

News item #5 explains the picture you see above. It's Joanna Newson in the new issue of Fader magazine. Yes, I mean the paper kind that you have to pay for like you used to before the Internet came along. And there's three major reasons to pay for it this month. 1: Joanna 2: Antony 3: Eleanor Friedberger (Fiery Furnaces). Stories on all of them and more. (and more includes writing by Nick Catchdubs). The photo was snagged from Fader's related blog entry, and click here for another scan from the issue.

UPDATE: I just posted the lossless (FLAC) version of the Joanna Newsom show at Mercury Lounge last year at the Trader's Den
_____________

BONUS

In the KCRW interview, Joanna cites both Hazel Dickens and Texas Gladden as influences, so for those interested....

M Ward @ Knitting Factory | Pics | Joanna Newsom Cover

M Ward @ Knitting Factory

I caught M. Ward at Knitting Factory in NYC Wednesday night, March 2nd, 2005. Danzig on Tuesday. M. Ward on Wednesday. Two shows so different, yet perhaps tied together by the ghost of Roy Orbison.

It was my first time seeing M, and like Frank Chromewaves who caught the Toronto show just a few days earlier, I was surprised at Ward's youth. The sold out crowd was hardcore, and cheered much louder for the older songs than they did for the much newer Transistor Radio tunes.

The man knows how to play the guitar, and if you close your eyes and concentrate while he sings, you can feel the chills run through your veins. It's that feeling that was driving many of the female fans in the audience crazy. In particular, the sex noises coming from the woman to my left were making me especially uncomfortable. I thought she was faking it until Ward thanked the crowd for "coming" to the show. She screamed, "Thanks for making us come." "Shucks," he replied as he went right in to the next song.

I'd say he has a little practicing left to do on the piano, but the few mistakes didn't take away from the show. He may have just been tired, which was evidenced by the bags under his eyes. Add the harmonica to the list of three instruments he used in addition to his voice at this one man show that brought us two encores, and covers of Daniel Johnston, Joanna Newsom, and Louie Armstrong's What a Wonderful World.

Thanks to Frank's review, I was hoping and ready to catch the Joanna Newsom cover, which ended up being Sadie. And catch it is just what I did...on my handy digital (video) camera.

Download the video at this sendit URL:

And catch M. Ward at one of his upcoming tour dates including April 10th at Bowery Ballroom with CocoRosie and Devotchka and April 11th at Southpaw in Brooklyn with Norfolk and Western.

Danzig / Misfits Reunion NYC Pics | Part 2 | Pics

I promised I would update the Danzig/Misfits post I started Tuesday night, but literally haven't had a second since. So here's the rest of the story that was Danzig @ Club Spirit, NYC - March 1st, 2005.

Danzig/Misfits @ Spirit NYC

As previously noted, I was hesitant to spend almost $40 to see Danzig play at club Spirit until I found out about the Doyle-Misfits 'reunion set. I was complaining about club Spirit. I forgot that Spirit is actually the club formerly known as Twilo where I spent many a night in my former, yet post-Danzig-obsessed life. It ended up being a perfectly suitable venue for a rock show (minus the columns). The $40 was worth it and then some.

Danzig played lots of favorites like Mother, Twist of Cain, and How the Gods Kill, with the obvious highlight for everyone involved being the 30 minute Misfits set. Johnny Kelly of Type O Negative performed drummer duties. That was a bonus, since Type O Negative is another one of my favorite all-time bands, and Johnny is just an all around nice guy who will be happy to tell you all about his custom cars if you go catch his Led Zeppelin cover band in various local bars all throughout Brooklyn.

The place went absolutely nuts when Doyle, devil lock and all, took the stage for the Misfits set. New York was waiting for this moment since New Jersey's own The Misfits broke up in 1983 (that's 22 years ago if you're bad in math). I practiced the skill I've honed over the years, which is both enjoying the madness of the pit, while holding a camera and snapping pictures. It's my own version of war journalism. Thanks to neuman for the set list which I've pasted at the end of this post.

How do I rate this show in comparison to all the others I've attended? So far this year I've been blown away by The Arcade Fire at Irving Plaza and Bloc Party at Roxy, but to compare this experience to those would be a disservice to history. I walked away from all three shows feeling like I just experienced the greatest concert ever. And they all were for that moment in time, but this one meant so much more - like visiting a place you hadn't been since childhood when things didn't matter so much. Danzig at Twilo in 2005 with a dash of Type O Negative. Four worlds colliding.

Reuters shares my enthusiasm

The Boston Herald was at the Boston show.

Sorry Canada.

Keren Ann Live Downloads | Upcoming Shows

Thanks to Largehearted Boy for pointing to this set of MP3's from a recent radio appearance by Keren Ann. A little digging around, and I discovered there's a lot more audio and video where that came from.

Don't be scared off by More in the Monitor's not-so-nice review of her recent show at Tonic. Keren Ann has more shows coming up, and some are not sold out. Of note are the Nolita record release party at Joe's Pub, and a chance to see her at the soon-to-close Fez.

Pre-order Nolita at Amazon.

A Girl Called Eddy is opening for Keren Ann at some of the shows. Read an interview at Now. (also via LB). Here's a review.

The Portable Infinite just saw Keren and and Eddy, and thought they were as good as Joanna Newsom.

divinely quirky new single, 'Oh My Gosh', on 14th
March. The single features an infectious vocal
from Vula Malinga and is destined to become a
dancefloor classic.

As per usual, the boys have pulled a blinder of a
video out of the bag. Check it out

Bon Jovi, Queen Latifah, Save the Music

The VH1 Save the Music Foundation donated $1 million worth of new instruments to 41 city schools and designated April 11 for a "star-studded concert in the Big Apple."

"Music education is an important part of growing up - it teaches discipline, creativity and appreciation of the arts," said Mayor Bloomberg, who announced the gift at Public School 57 in Harlem.

The annual benefit returns to the Beacon Theatre, where it originated in 1998. Queen Latifah, Bon Jovi, Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20, John Legend, Joss Stone and others will perform. Proceeds help restore music programs at schools across the country. The concert will be taped on April 11 and shown on April 17. The concert will be the final event of the "VH1 Save The Music Week" from April 4 - April 11.
