Indie Rock Karaoke w/ DJ Do It | Northsix

Mike asked me if I knew anything about Indie Rock Karaoke at Northsix. I didn’t, and Northsix’s website was no help. It simply reads:

Tue 3/15/05 Indie Rock Karaoke hosted by DJ Do It $8, Doors: 8pm, Show: 9pm

Completely unhelpful. On first glance, I assumed Northsix was starting a karaoke night, an indie rock karaoke night even. Sounds like a good idea. Punk rock karaoke, backing band included, is now a NYC institution. I was wrong.

But let’s go back to Northsix’s website for a second. REDESIGN THAT THING! Look at this homepage. Can you say 1993? And it’s a good thing they’ve posted their rules. Before I read that, I thought they would give me my gun back if confiscated. The only worse website is Warsaw’s. They could both take a lesson from Southpaw, who’s latest redesign is hot. (Keren Ann pics and all 😉

So anyway, back to Karaoke. It ends up that this thing is a one man traveling karaoke show. “DJ Do It” has risen to fame with his indie rock karaoke night in Georgia. It’s so popular, he takes it on the road. He’s got a collection of more than 875 songs that includes:

‘the Pixies, Pavement, Sonic Youth, Le Tigre, Neutral Milk Hotel, Dismemberment Plan, Death Cab for Cutie, the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, the Smiths, Joy Division, Beck, Modest Mouse, Jonathan Richman, Olivia Tremor Control, Bjork, Guided by Voices, Hum, Interpol, the Cure, Belle and Sebastian, Ben Folds Five, R.E.M., Pere Ubu, Radiohead, Morrissey, Roxy Music, Weezer, Talking Heads, Blur, Elastica, Joy Division, Morphine, My Morning Jacket, Minutemen, Strokes, Sleater Kinney, Velvet Underground and many more’

and that’s the story.
