FannyPack : The Streetrope Invasion | M.I.A.

"Fannypack are like M.I.A., who hops her own scotch and shakes her own jumprope, and they're in a similar predicament, which is that they don't quite fit pre-existing genres, dance or hip-hop, so they'll have to do what Ben Edmonds said the New York Dolls needed to do in 1973: create their own audience."

Brooklyn booty brats snatch bills and invite you to suck up, eat a Big Mac, and do it now

M.I.A. @ S.O.B's: Tickets are on sale (Again)

Fannypack's new album drops on May 10th.

Who is Playing Siren Fest? | Not at Coachella

Siren Festival 2004
The Siren Festival

One thing you almost never hear me talk about is Coachella (happening as we speak in California). When I make the move to full-time music blogging, I'll write more about outdoor festivals on the other side of the country that I'm not even attending.

Strangely, there is a phenomenon among fellow NY music nut-jobs like myself to make the yearly exodus to Mecca, I mean Coachella. NYC attendees include Central Village, I Rock I Roll, and Productshop. I suppose it's as good an excuse as any for a vacation.

In the meantime, I'll stick to the festivals happening in Brooklyn. One such festival is happening in Coney Island for free on July 16th. And since I have nothing better to think about, I sit and wonder, "Who is going to play Siren Festival this year?"

The first confirmation is in. No offense to this band, but it's anti-climatic. Daily Refill reports that VHS or Beta is in fact on the bill for Siren.

I started a rumor a few weeks ago that Arcade Fire might be playing the show. So far nothing has proven it wrong.

1) You will not find The Arcade Fire on the lineup for Pitchfork's Intonation Festival (happening the same weekend). You will find The Decemberists, Fiery Furnaces, The Wrens, Broken Social Scene, The Go! Team, Will Oldham, and others that must not be playing Siren.

2) If you take a look at The Arcade Fire's upcoming tour dates, you will see that they are playing Lollapalooza on July 24th, but that July 16th is completely free.

What will happen if The Arcade Fire play Siren? It will be too crowded (and potentially miserable for those that didn't wait for hours to get good spots) by the time the headliners go on like every year of course!

Kimya Dawson Touring All Over the Place

Right now, Anti-Folk star Kimya Dawson is in Florida. On Saturday May 14th, she plays in Brooklyn. On June 14th, she'll be back in NYC again. See all the tour details here.

Chart Attack says that Kimya likes fellow anti-folkster Regina Spektor.

Regina Spektor is touring with Keane.

Kimya Dawson and Adam Green played together in the Moldy Peaches. Only Magazine says that Adam is the new David Hasselhof.

The Calgary Sun points out that Regina Spektor sounds more like Tori Amos than the Moldy Peaches.

Tori Amos recently performed for KEXP in NYC.

Regina Spektor opening for Keane | Video

For every post I make on this site, there are about 10 more I never get to. Someone I love, but have yet to really post about is Regina Spektor. Somewhat incorrectly lumped into the anti-folk scene, and most famous for singing and touring with the Strokes, she's an irresistibly cute (though many claim it's an act - see future post) singer songwriter with great live shows and albums. I was at her recent 2.5 hour show at Bowery Ballroom and was blown away. I wrote a really long review of it too, but it's sitting unfinished in my to-do pile. I like her new major-label debut album too.

All that out of the way, I was a little disappointed to find out that she's opening for Keane on their upcoming tour. In NYC, that's at Radio City Music Hall. My disappointment stems from that fact that I would love to see her at Radio City, but have very little interest in seeing Keane in the same venue (or at all). If she was headlining, I would be less upset.

(Keane disclaimer: I did enjoy Keane's album for a bit of time last year. I almost saw them live three times, but never have)

Regina has a new video you can check out right here:

Annie Doesn't Read Stereogum or Fluxblog (but should)

Arjan: Your songs "Chewing Gum" and "Heartbeat" became really popular in the U.S. thanks to the support of bloggers. How do you feel about that?

Annie: The support I have gotten is unbelievable. I never thought that album would reach the U.S. To me my sound is very European.

Arjan: Do you ever read popular music blogs like Fluxblog or Stereogum that initially picked up your music?

Annie: No, I haven't. But I probably should. I read Pitchfork quite often.

U2 performing | Good Morning America Concert Series

U2 will perform for free (most likely not in Bryant Park) (maybe not even) in NYC for Good Morning America on May 20th (7am or something like that). Unlike the rest of the Good Morning America shows, U2 will (probably) not be in Brryant Park (a larger location will be announced - possibly taped from a stop on their Vertigo tour). Three of the songs will air on TV that day, with two more airing the next day (3+2 = they'll play at least 5 songs).

The U2 show is the kick-off for the summer Good Morning America Concert Series. Here's the full schedule (of shows that are definitely happening in Bryant Park in NYC):

May 27 — Rascal Flatts
June 3 — Shakira
June 10 — Santana
June 17 — Ringo Starr
June 24 — Jesse McCartney
July 1 — Patti LaBelle
July 8 — Missy Elliott
July 15 — Kayne West
July 22 — Fantasia
July 29 — Clay Aiken
August 5 — Jessica Simpson
August 12 — Keith Urban
August 19 — Hilary Duff
August 26 — Avril Lavigne
* Final Concert Date and Talent —TBD
**Talent subject to change.

Anti-Folk | The Rock Snob's Definition

Anti-Folk: Hazily defined genre originally inhabited by young white tenement squatters who combined folk and punk sensibilities, but more recently embodied by LO-FI pretend rustics Will Oldham and Bill Callahan, who under their aliases (Palace and Bonnie "Prince" Billy for Oldham, Smog for Callahan), thrum acoustic guitars and warble ominous murder-ballad lyrics in the style of the authentic twenties hayseeds heard on Harry Smith's ANTHOLOGY OF AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC. The anti-folk movement (which took it's name from English acousti-punk Billy Bragg's description of his own sound) traces its origins to a scroungy eighties Lower East Side scene that spawned, among others, Beck, Michelle Shocked, Cindy Lee Berryhill, and Ani DiFranco.

Definition from the Rock Snob's Dictionary.

After recently winning 'picture of the week' on SPIN.com, SPIN was nice enough to invite me to Tuesday night's 'SpinHouse Live' performance by the Futureheads. The whole thing was taped, and will soon be available on SPIN's website in streaming video (which I'll link to as soon as it's posted). SPIN has a review and more pictures from the event. iPod Stolen | Fired from the Fader

Tricia Romano reports...

"Getting your iPod stolen sucks. Talking about getting your iPod stolen in The New York Times and then getting fired sucks more. In a March 30 story about iPod thieves, ELLIOT ARONOW, an editorial assistant at The Fader magazine, which is owned by marketing company Cornerstone Promotions, said, "All the value was really in the music. The thing itself was just a stupid device." Shortly thereafter, he found himself out of a job."

Decemberists Charity Auction (again)

"In response to the band’s recent multi-thousand dollar loss of precious musical equipment, a few kind people have put together this Benefit Auction on eBay to help defray the cost of keeping the band in instruments. Among the items to be auctioned are several original Carson Ellis watercolors of a few of the stolen items, a Craig Thompson (of Blankets fame) original drawing depicting the procession of the Infanta, several Barger Rothery Academy badges (as seen in the ‘Sixteen Military Wives’ video), and many, many more cool bits of arcana."

Annie Update

Arjan posted a link to a new official Annie remix. (see an old post of mine for more remixes)

Fader magazine interviewed Annie while she was in NYC. They posted the video.

------

When I posted the photos of the Annie show at Tribeca Grand, I didn't really say much. I did say I liked it, and I did. I should have also mentioned I had very low expectations, and the whole thing was a bit akward. These three quotes say what I'm thinking better than me...

"all things considered i didn't think it was awful at all. it was like her fifth gig, she's trying to transfer a studiomagic record into a passable live performance (and she will at some point, first thing she needs to do is get the vocal mix right and, yikes, sing louder), the band's (opl bastards) a bit sessiony because hey, they live in finland and don't get to rehearse with her that much, i think they're happy just to have these songs down. also i saw the sirius show on tuesday, and it was really dreadful (she performed in a studio fishbowl, everyone else had to stand outside the studio and listen), so my expectations weren't too high."

"They're CERTAINLY not a live band per se and there were all sorts of technical errors, but Annie herself was really charming and the songs, performed live, really held up for me.
"Wedding" in particular (unreleased and I want a copy NOW NOW NOW) was supergood, '1999'-era Prince and a definite future hit. I bounced when people started screaming "HEARTBEEEEEEEEEEAT!" as I'm not a fan of that cut, but I definitely enjoyed the show."

"I thought it was pretty good considering that they don't perform very often. The vocal mix was too low, but whatever. "Chewing Gum" and "The Wedding" were the highlights for sure - that's when the band sounded most confident, hitting upon a kinda mid-period Talking Heads + Kylie sort of sound. Very promising. Within a year or so, they should be pretty great, but for now it was definitely above average."

------

And then there's this: "ANNIE (FROM NORWAY), PLEASE WHISK ME AWAY TO YOUR UTOPIAN SCANDINAVIAN PARADISE LAND WHERE WE WILL FEAST ON ELK MEAT AND MEAD OR WHATEVER YOU PEOPLE EAT AND DRINK THERE AND BE HAPPY TOGETHER FOREVER PLEASE THANKS."

And Coolfer sums up some more rewiews

On the Closing of EasyTree & Torrent Sites

On April 6th, I posted a link to three Joanna Newsom torrents hosted on easytree.org. A few hours later, the links were dead. Largehearted boy reported his shock at the missing site. A message on easytree said they shut down for legal reasons.

The Village Voice reports...

"The word that went around the EZT community was that a European division of Universal Music had complained to Easytree's Internet service provider that the site was hosting an illicit Nirvana video (which it wasn't) and threatened to sue. Whereupon the ISP got cold feet; that's why they call it a chilling effect.

File traders bounced right back. Within days, they'd migrated to the very similar dimeadozen.org,..."

Scalpers go High Tech

"For hot tours like Springsteen, U2 and Nine Inch Nails -- and, soon, Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones -- professional ticket brokers use a combination of manpower and technology to swoop in and commandeer hundreds of seats at a time. As of Monday afternoon, April 11th, ticketsnow.com was selling 292 seats to Springsteen's New Jersey show -- almost nine percent of the 3,300 seats that went on sale to the public -- with some going for as much as $2,565 apiece."

The lastest exciting album leak is Illinois by Sufjan Stevens. Pitchfork posted the track list a few weeks ago. No matter how you feel about leaks, it's hard to resist listening to the song TTIKTDA posted for download. You'll notice a Cloud Room demo song there too. As noted in my Gothamist post yesterday, people are talking about this band. Unfortunately I missed their free show at Knitting Factory last night in favor of the last of three Shins shows at Webster Hall. Actually it wasn't unfortunate. The Shins were great. I have pictures to post, but bed is calling. Read reviews of Sunday night's show at One Louder, Central Village, and Daily Refill. My last post had a link to some pictures and an animated video.
