Who is Playing Siren Fest? | Not at Coachella
Siren Festival 2004

One thing you almost never hear me talk about is Coachella (happening as we speak in California). When I make the move to full-time music blogging, I'll write more about outdoor festivals on the other side of the country that I'm not even attending.
Strangely, there is a phenomenon among fellow NY music nut-jobs like myself to make the yearly exodus to Mecca, I mean Coachella. NYC attendees include Central Village, I Rock I Roll, and Productshop. I suppose it's as good an excuse as any for a vacation.
In the meantime, I'll stick to the festivals happening in Brooklyn. One such festival is happening in Coney Island for free on July 16th. And since I have nothing better to think about, I sit and wonder, "Who is going to play Siren Festival this year?"
The first confirmation is in. No offense to this band, but it's anti-climatic. Daily Refill reports that VHS or Beta is in fact on the bill for Siren.
I started a rumor a few weeks ago that Arcade Fire might be playing the show. So far nothing has proven it wrong.
1) You will not find The Arcade Fire on the lineup for Pitchfork's Intonation Festival (happening the same weekend). You will find The Decemberists, Fiery Furnaces, The Wrens, Broken Social Scene, The Go! Team, Will Oldham, and others that must not be playing Siren.
2) If you take a look at The Arcade Fire's upcoming tour dates, you will see that they are playing Lollapalooza on July 24th, but that July 16th is completely free.
What will happen if The Arcade Fire play Siren? It will be too crowded (and potentially miserable for those that didn't wait for hours to get good spots) by the time the headliners go on like every year of course!

i hereby predict/hope for the appearance of dinosaur jr, who are playing summerstage the thursday before siren, boston that friday, and are then off till tuesday. they're not playing any other nyc dates. and if they play siren, i bet they're on the second (better) stage.

That's some good deductive reasoning.

Siren is a huge headache, and not worth it.
Posted by cdwill | April 30, 2005 12:58 AM
Psh! You're a huge headache! My friends and I took a day trip to Coney from south Jersey for last year's Siren and it was one of the most incredible experineces of our lives.
Where the hell's the preliminary lineup? It's usually announced before May...

The Stillwell stage IS the better stage and should be the main stage. Eventually they are going to have to accept this fact and give up on having the main stage next to the Cyclone. And that massive VIP area in front of the main stage was a bunch of crap last year, I thought this was supposed to be a free show for the fans. Otherwise, Siren has been a major highlight of recent summers and I can't wait for the lineup. I'm hoping that Broken Social Scene headline and then play that other, lesser festival on Sunday.

Well so much for BSS playing Siren, their website lists them playing the Shitfork fest on Saturday...
Posted by Chris | May 6, 2005 10:56 AM
What the hell is taking them so long to announce?

im so antsy. i need to know. gosh!

waiting....

At this point, fuck Siren. Nothing will top Intonation's (aka Pitchfork Fest's) lineup and price. Siren's obviously having a difficult time booking bands (thus the going-on-three-weeks delay), and I can see why:
Tortoise
Death From Above 1979
The Go! Team
Broken Social Scene
Four Tet
Magnolia Electric Company
AC Newman
Beans Featuring The Holy Fuck
The M’s
Head of Femur
The Decemberists
Les Savy Fav
The Wrens
Deerhoof
Andrew Bird
Out Hud
Xiu Xiu
Dungen
How can you beat that, for only $22?

I hate Pitchfork...

I don't even care if they don't get more well known bands...I would rather they have more of a showcase of local talent like The Hold Steady, Benzos, and The Cloud Room...and hell, maybe a little less people would show...

Finally...some sort of something...
They have updated the website...GREEN!!!
Still no lineup though...

i have it on excellent sound-dude authority... spoon is confirmed for siren.
Posted by jacquie | May 22, 2005 9:55 PM
Well then, so far:
Spoon
Q and not U
VHS or Beta
Posted by Chris | May 24, 2005 9:16 AM
Wow, spoon should be cool. My friend's pussing out and doens't want to go to Intonation if it means missing Siren, so...
If the Hold Steady or Thunderbirds are Now! played, I'd be tres happy.

I just hope that girl with the boots is there again this year. Wearing the same outfit.

Oh, I'm sorry, both Hold Steady AND Thunderbirds are Now! are playing at the fucking Intonation fest, according to FKR's website. ARRGHAGRAGHAR!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by drowned_in_milk | May 25, 2005 10:25 AM
The Dears will also be playing Siren. SO far:
Spoon
Quintron - listen on tourdates page
The Dears - listed on tourdates page
Q and not U
VHS or Beta

'tis a little strange the haven't announced anything yet, in fact you can't even call anyone about it because the VV just lists an email address. They should mix it up with some local acts too....The Giraffes, Audio Fiction and whatever the hell they can grab from what's left of the summer gig rollouts....
Posted by Finny | May 25, 2005 10:41 AM
i too hate pitchfork! they have a pretty great lineup.
Posted by jenny | May 25, 2005 7:35 PM
Seems pretty weak to me. If Arcade Fire plays, it'll be even worse -- so much more of a shitshow, for so much overrated music.
If I were the Voice, I'd try to get Architecture in Helsinki and Caribou. Caribou puts on a great show. Wouldn't be bad if Caribou brought along his recent opening acts.
Free show of the summer's probably all those Canadians playing in Prospect Park. Probably won't go there -- got my ass tickets for the Pornographers at Maxwell's show.

you are right about q and not u.

ALWAYS TAKE THE SUBWAY
Holy fucking shit.
We’re walking up the stairs from the N,R at Union Square, bout 2a.m. Sat night. Couple street musicians are banging out some tune when we get up to the park.
Holy fucking shit.
It’s Arcade Fire.
Covering New Order. Win and Will on guitars. Regine on guitar-case-as-percussion. Why the fuck not? It’s a nice night in New York, why not blow the dozen wanderers’ minds who’ve magically stumbled upon this scene?
Cover a couple more, then wrap it up with Tunnels.
Holy fucking shit.
New York is magic.
