The Blood Brothers @ Spirit, NYC | Pics

"There aren't many bands doing what the Blood Brothers are doing right now. In fact, maybe none. The Seattle group have found a way to fuse indie and metal so seamlessly, it's hard to tell which you're listening to.

Their latest record, Crimes, was released last fall on V2, giving the Brothers a huge promotional boost following their indie hit, "Burn, Piano Island, Burn." The album is a full-on assault, from the "Nightclubbing"-like swagger of the title track to the death metal disco of "Love Rhymes With Hideous Car Wreck."" - Chart Attack

Single Frame

Friday night (May 27th, 2005), I caught Single Frame @ Pianos in NYC. Live video for the show supplied by SuperAlright! who also did the video for There's an Exact Copy of this is in the Basement.

The band is from Austin, Texas. Upcoming shows in NYC include June 1st @ Club 17, June 3rd @ Tommy's Tavern, and June 9th @ The Delancey. Full tour schedule also at their website.

Reviews of Body/End Basement (their new album) at Pitchfork (which they didn't like as much as their last album) & Tiny Mix Tapes. LISTEN TO THE WHOLE THING. You can buy it at Insound.

PrefixBlog was at the same show and wrote up a very positive review. The opener they refer to shrieking into his microphone in the middle of the floor was the Wind-Up Bird. One Louder (who has an MP3 in their right side bar) has a higher opinion of him. I didn't mind him. There's a very favorable review of his album @ Pitchfork. I left before the Dirty Projectors played.

Melody Nelson was at (and hosted) their show at Rothko.

Liza Minelli & Michael Bolton | Free Shows in Coney Island

Liza MinelliMichael Bolton

The Siren Festival isn't the only free concert that happens in Coney Island over the summer. The 2005 schedule has yet to be announced, but I've learned that the annual Seaside Summer Concert series in Asser Levy Seaside Park (across from the aquarium) in Coney Island (Brooklyn, NY) will feature free shows by Liza Minelli and Michael Bolton this summer. Liza is either in June or July, and Michael is on August 18th. Call your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and make a day of it.

Village Voice Siren Festival 2005 Line-up Update

According to a press release Gothamist received, "scheduled performers include Spoon, Mates Of State, Brendan Benson, VHS Or Beta, Dungen, Q And Not U, and The Dears, with many more to be announced."

So for those following along, the only surprises here are Mates of State and Dungen (plus Spoon is confirmed). That's good news. It's not often we get to see Dungen (though I couldn't really get into their album last year), Mates of State is fun, and Spoon rocks.

Amsterjam @ Randall's Island August 20th

From the New York Times...

"A few years ago, mash-ups - eye-opening musical juxtapositions created by D.J.'s blending pieces from different songs - were the latest underground sensation. Then, last fall, Jay-Z, and Linkin Park released a collaborative album, "Collision Course," and the mash-up went mainstream. Now a new festival, AmsterJam, is coming to Randalls Island on Aug. 20 to celebrate the form with a roster of incongruous big-ticket pairings. Snoop Dogg will rap with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the band 311 will play with the rapper Fat Joe, and the band Garbage will perform with Mos Def; a pairing of "two major Latin artists" is also promised. The curator of the event is Bootsy Collins, the legendary funk bassist who is something of a stylistic mash-up himself. Tickets go on sale Friday through Ticketmaster."

Darfur | (& Lindsay Lohan & Natalie Portman naked)

"The impact on people of the two-year conflict in Sudan's western region of Darfur has been described as the world's worst humanitarian crisis by the United Nations.

Some two million people are estimated to now live in camps, having fled their homes and at least 180,000 are thought to have died during the crisis. Sudan's government and the pro-government Arab militias are accused of war crimes against the region's black African population, although the UN has stopped short of terming it a genocide."

The 2005 NY Press Summer Guide

Here's a sampling of the 2005 NY Press Summer Guide...

Best brooklyn nature trip

Canoeing the Gowanus Canal

"Please stand up. Running late one day from Carroll Gardens to Park Slope, we stumbled on a truly romantic wooden bridge spanning the Canal on Carroll between Bond and Third. We had always assumed (in best hipster-asshole fashion) there was nothing between the two neighborhoods. Though we'd glimpsed the Canal from the Smith & 9th F/G stop before, this was a revelation, replete with the childhood frisson of discovering the sewage-treatment plant's secret entrance. Further investigation revealed that the Canal was formed in the 19th century out of a bunch of creeks, went on to facilitate Brooklyn's heavy industry, and was eventually rendered obsolete by the BQE..."

Best free concert series for deviled eggs and a box of wine

Celebrate Brooklyn

"Life is good. At most outdoor concerts, we catch more elbows than notes and see more haircuts than bands. Then there's the ever present danger of spilling our $7 Bud—or having a dollar's worth of someone else's land on our lap. So taking in a night of music on the sprawling knoll of Prospect Park is a welcome change of pace. The atmosphere is relaxed and the crowd ranges from scenester to oldster, all sitting on blankets in front their pic-a-nic baskets. People pass around sleeves of crackers, chunks of Gouda and, because cans and bottles are banned, that trusty box of Franzia table red...."

Best Reason to Visit Coney Island ASAP

Because it's your last chance

"Sad. At the end of the summer, thanks to some shortsighted city planners and no-sighted developers, everything you love about gritty old Coney Island is going to be swept away. A few token landmarks may be spared for the sake of postcard sales—the Cyclone, the Wonder Wheel—but you can say goodbye to the souvenir shops that rent beach chairs, the fried clam stands, the Boardwalk Nathan's and—god help us all—Ruby's Bar. And with them the characters who made Coney what it is—namely, one of the last bastions of rabid individuality left in New York."

I could of sworn they were gonna say because of the Village Voice's annual Siren Festival.

Ditch iTunes, Use Winamp for your iPod

People that will make fun of you about this type of thing make fun of me all the time. I hate iTunes, and I love Winamp (classic skin only). I only use iTunes to sync my iPod (against my will). I listen to all my music in Winamp. There's been this iPod plug-in for Winamp for a while, but apparently it just got good.

"IPod users are raving about a plug-in that makes the Winamp digital jukebox a better way to manage the iPod than Apple's iTunes. The plug-in, called ml_iPod, allows iPod users to bypass iTunes and manage music collections in Winamp instead. The iPod is supposed to work with iTunes only. A new version of the software was released Monday."

THANK YOU MAKER OF THIS.

""A lot of the feedback I get is people thanking me for freeing them from iTunes," said Fisher. "It shows the dissatisfaction people have with iTunes.""

Chuck Klosterman Defines Music Genres

"...reading rock magazines must be very confusing to people who only listen to rock music casually. Whenever journalists write about music, we always operate under the assumption that certain genres are self-evident and that placing a given band into one of those categories serves an expository purpose. Just as often, an artist will be described as a synthesis of two equally obscure subgenres, and we’re all supposed to do the sonic math ourselves. However, this only helps the informed; that kind of description is useful to those who have already conquered the rock lexicon. What we need is a glossary of terms so we can all share an equal playing field."

Indie Comedians | As Seen in the NY Post

Jessi Klein The cover of the "New York Pulse" (inside the NY Post) today features NYC's indie comedians ("Alt-mockers"). These are the very comedians you often see covered on this blog, the Apiary, Gothamist, and...well every other blog. Jessi Klein (pictured) and Paul Sheer, who performed in Gothamist's Laughable Hype show two weeks ago, are pictured. Bobby Tisdale & Eugene Mirman, the stars of Piano's recent Invite Them Up taping, are there too.

The article begins...

"Here's how a young comic in New York City can tell if they're funny: The Shins ask you to be their opening act. You go to a Bright Eyes show and Conor Oberst's fans mob you. Wilco's Jeff Tweedy races down to see your act - right after he's played a sold-out show at the Garden - and quotes your own material to your face. You're sitting at home, watching 'The O.C.' and Seth Cohen name-checks your show."

The Flaming Lips | The Fearless Freaks

The Fearless Freaks is a new movie about The Flaming Lips. It came out on DVD last week, and it's playing in a few theaters. From Amazon...

"Equal parts punk and psychedelia, the Flaming Lips emerged from Oklahoma City as one of the most bracing bands of the late 1980's. The Fearless Freaks documents their rise from Butthole Surfers-imitating noisemakers to grand poobahs of orchestral pop masterpieces. Filmmaker Bradley Beesely had the good fortune of living in the same neighborhood as lead Lip Wayne Coyne, who quickly enlisted his buddy to document his band's many concerts and assorted exploits." ....more

According to the movie's official website, it premiered at SXSW. And as detailed in Flavorpill (and thank you Gawker for reminding me to post this), you can see the movie at the Pioneer Theater on E. 3rd St. in NYC from tonight (May 25th, 2005) till Tuesday (May 31st, 2005).

Siren vs. Intonation | (& Exclusive Initial Siren Lineup)

The Village Voice Siren Festival and Pitchfork's Intonation festival are both happening on July 16th.

Not only can you see Tortoise, Death From Above 1979, The Go! Team, Broken Social Scene, Four Tet, Magnolia Electric Company, AC Newman, Beans Featuring The Holy Fuck, The M’s, Head of Femur, Will Oldham, Jean Grae, The Decemberists, Les Savy Fav, The Wrens, Deerhoof, Andrew Bird, Out Hud, Xiu Xiu AND Dungen for the $22 TWO DAY PASS (less than I paid to see the Decemberists alone at Warsaw this Thursday), BUT people are also saying Thunderbirds are Now! and The Hold Steady (I really thought we were gonna get them) are also on the bill for Bitchfork's Intonation Music Festival.

The Village Voice still hasn't announced who's playing Siren (probably because there's no bands left to book), but we've managed to compile a list of confirmed/unconfirmed/rumored bands:

Spoon, Quintron, The Dears, Q and not U, VHS or Beta, Ambulance Ltd.
Possible players: The Arcade Fire & Dinosaur Jr.

Tricia Romano Interviews the Motherfucker Crew

Monday is memorial day. That means Sunday night is a Motherf*cker party in NYC. No bands on the bill for their 5th anniversary celebration, but Carlos D of Interpol is DJing (and transsexual Amanda Lepore is performing). Tricia Romano got together with Johnny T, Georgie Seville, Justine D, and Michael T for an interview. Here are some highlights...

JT: We only do Mofos on specific dates so the bands have to work around our schedule and it's hard to get everything organized a few months in advance. I'm still working on getting the Strokes. That will hopefully happen soon.

JD: The first Fischerspooner. Please, no more, no more "Emerge"! Not at my party, girl!

MT: Odd, I never thought we were going to alter the course of nightlife. You've mentioned a lot of fads—we never considered ourselves a fad. Maybe that's why we're still around.

Vegetarians are Gay, Vegans are Transsexual

Can't we all just get along?

Sloane Crosley, who couldn't hack it as a vegan and now eats fish, reminds me of what a freak I am...

"...being a vegetarian in this city is not unlike being gay. Vegetarian restaurants and options abound. I have the same number of veggie friends as I do gay friends. Because it's so common and sometimes even hip to be a vegetarian, it's become socially acceptable to poke fun of us. Being a vegan, of course, is more like the dietary equivalent of being a transsexual. Acceptance isn't quite as contagious as it should be."

Upcoming Shows & Fun Facts!

Pre-sale not so necessary. Tickets are still on sale for both of Billy Corgan's expensive shows @ Webster Hall on June 27th & 28th.

I knew Mindless Self Indulgence fans were fanatical. You can buy tickets to all three of their July shows @ Webster Hall, or just get the three day pass.

Keren Ann @ Webster Hall is not going to be a good experience. She's opening for Gomez on June 21st. Tix on sale & check previous post for more Keren Ann tour dates.

I'm loving the new Spoon album. Tickets are still on sale for their June 9th show @ Webster Hall. (or you can just wait to see them at Siren)

Feist is finally headlining Bowery Ballroom. Sadly I'm not that excited after seeing her @ Joe's Pub and then opening for British Sea Power (review & pics on my to-do pile)

You can't go wrong with Kimya Dawson @ Northsix on June 14th (at least I think so)

Just because Jay Farrar went solo doesn't mean Sun Volt broke up. They're releasing their first album in 7 years on July 12th, and to celebrate they'll play Bowery Ballroom on the same day (on sale Wed. @ noon). By the way, that's 2 days before they play South Street Seaport for free.

ANOTHER Bravery show. Jeez. this time @ Webster Hall on July 13th (tix on sale Wed. @ noon)

MC5 Kick out the Jams @ Northsix

MC5

One day before their Central Park Summerstage performance (w/ Sun Ra Arkestra & DJ Spooky) on July 30th, MC5 will stop @ Northsix in Brooklyn, NY to perform their groundbreaking album, Kick out the Jams, in its entirety. Gilby Clarke (Guns N' Roses), Lisa Kekaula (BellRays, Basement Jaxx), and Mark Arm (Mudhoney) will be playing with DKT/MC5 (they changed their name from MC5 to DKT/MC5 since they don't have all the original members I believe). Tickets are on sale.
The rest of their tour dates are in Europe (so far).

Last year MC5 released a DVD. You can stream their song "Sister Ann" @ Epitonic.

Keep reading to find out why you should know who MC5 are...

"Alongside their Detroit-area brethren the Stooges, MC5 essentially laid the foundations for the emergence of punk; deafeningly loud and uncompromisingly intense, the group's politics were ultimately as crucial as their music, their revolutionary sloganeering and anti-establishment outrage crystallizing the counterculture movement at its most volatile and threatening. Under the guidance of svengali John Sinclair (the infamous founder of the radical White Panther Party), MC5 celebrated the holy trinity of sex, drugs, and rock & roll, their incendiary live sets offering a defiantly bacchanalian counterpoint to the peace-and-love reveries of their hippie contemporaries. Although corporate censorship, label interference, and legal hassles combined to cripple the band's hopes of mainstream notoriety, both their sound and their sensibility remain seminal influences on successive generations of artists." ...continued at MP3.com

Dirty on Purpose Video Shoot, Shows & new CD

Dirty on Purpose have a new record. The CD release party is June 18th @ Mercury Lounge with Bishop Allen, The End of the World, and Chloroform. (poster)

They'll be at Southpaw on July 20th with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah & special guests for the 2nd anniversary of Vicious. (more tour dates at their website)

They're also shooting a video in NYC and they need your help (both filming and starring). Keep reading for the details (and more links)...

"We are going to shoot a music video for "All New Friends," and we need your help! The shoot is going to take place on June 5th (Location TBA in New York). We have to gather about 30 video cameras and 30 people willing to help shoot the video. We would really appreciate your help!

One interesting aspect of the video is that our director is one of the creators of "Greg the Bunny," that tv show that bombed on FOX, but is coming back to its original home at IFC this next season. So you get to meet him, and he's a really cool, friendly guy!

We'll provide beer and food for everyone willing to partake -- and it will be tons of fun! If you know people who have cameras and are willing to donate or partake in the fun, please forward this. If you want to participate in the video, please email me at info@dirtyonpurpose.com with the subject line "Music Video". Please include your name and phone number."

U2 vs. Coldplay | NYC Small (& Big) Shows Wrap-Up

Coldplay & U2 were both in NYC last week. Both played some small shows for lucky fans and TV cameras. U2 played (and filmed at) a small club on the Lower East Side (in Manhattan), some stadiums (in NJ and Manhattan), and appeared on Good Morning America. Coldplay filmed for VH1 in Brooklyn, for AOL Music in Manhattan, and for Saturday Night Live (also in Manhattan).

U2

"U2 have taken a break from their sell-out US tour to provide backing to revered crooner LEONARD COHEN in a tiny Manhattan, New York club.

The group were filmed recording Cohen classic TOWER OF SONG at erotic cabaret lounge The Slipper Room yesterday (19MAY05) for an upcoming documentary about the torch singer"

U2 Sign Up as Leonard Cohen's Backing Band

Billboard reviews a stadium show: U2 / May 17, 2005 / East Rutherford, N.J. (Continental Airlines Arena)

And it ends up the U2 performance on Good Morning America Friday morning was filmed in Chicago. ABC News has that story.

Coldplay

I started the Coldplay story the other day (with a link to a review of the VH1 Storytellers show at BAM @ Stereogum).

The Modern Age also went to the BAM show.
And The Modern Age was at the Beacon Theatre show which was being taped for AOL Music.
Productshop was there too.

Then Coldplay played SNL last night. "...it seems they decided to play only the traditional two sets instead of the five we were led to believe we would see. Coldplay performed their instant smash-hit single, Speed Of Sound, and followed it up with Fix You" - Nothing Much

Someone already posted MP3s FROM THAT PERFORMANCE.

Maximo Park Touring | Playing Tonic twice

If you read my post about Maximo Park, you know I probably won't be at either of the shows they're playing @ Tonic in June (strange choice of venue though, and if they follow the path of the Bravery, Killers, and Kaiser Chiefs, probably the last time they'll play somewhere in NYC that small. What do u think?). Here are all their summer 2005 tour dates.

The Indie Yuppie Phenomenon

So the NY Post ran this article about "Indie Yuppies" today (requires registration now!! grrr)

Here are some quotes (I added the links):

"The strain was first identified a few weeks ago by Vice Records label manager Adam Shore, who derided what he called the newly created "indie-yuppie establishment" in an interview with the Columbia Spectator."

"Shore's original comments were picked up by Scott Lapatine, who runs the heavily trafficked music blog stereogum.com."

"In other words, you must be an active, contributing member of society who considers your iTunes library an extension of yourself and who turns up for work at 10 a.m. - though you may be hung over from last night's secret Gang of Four show at the Tribeca Grand Hotel."

""I was like, 'Oh, my God! That's me!'" says entrant Tanya Manchini, a 31-year-old editor from Hoboken (who admits she was relieved the Nine Inch Nails show she saw on Monday night ended early)."

You'll have to read the article for the rest.

Sterogum reacts and announces the winner to the contest.

Lisa Marie Presley & band & Marky Ramone @ City Hall Park

Lisa Marie Presley gave a free J&R Music World sponsored performance @ 5 PM today (May 19th, 2005) @ City Hall Park in NYC. After the show she signed her new CD at the J&R right next door. The whole thing had to do with Shop 4 Class, an organization that raises money to buy books for New York City schools. I was surprised at the respectably long 45 minute set Lisa played.

A FAN

In honor of Joey Ramone's birthday (also today), Marky Ramone (here's an interview) played drums with the Lisa Marie & band for the last song: a cover of the Ramones' "Here Today Gone Tomorrow." According to Marky, Johnny's (or was it Joey's?) wife was in the audience. I assume Lisa will be joining them at Irving Plaza tonight for Joey's (RIP) official birthday party.

Team Sleep | New Album | 2nd NY Show Added

As Stereogum pointed out (with an MP3 to download too) the other day, you can stream the new Team Sleep album @ AOL Music. More to listen to at their website. Team Sleep is Chino Moreno (the singer) from the Deftones' side project.

"This CD has been talked about for years, and has been squeduled for release so many times over the last 4 years that some thought it would never come out. After an album of demos leaked onto the internet years ago, people realised how brilliant this would be if these demos were finilized. But what was rapidly becoming a dream to interested fans finally became a reality this year, when its final release date was set, and Team Sleep finally released their self-titled debut album." - Ultimate Guitar review of Team Sleep

The Deftones headlined Roseland last time they were in NYC. You can see Team Sleep @ Knitting Factory on Wed. May 25th, 2005. The first show was announced and sold out long ago, so it's a good thing they added a 2nd late show that still has tickets.

You can buy the album @ Amazon, and read more about Team Sleep in this MTV article.

Soundtracks | Skating, D.R.I., The Arcade Fire & Star Wars

Productshop points out the lack of classic skater bands like D.R.I. and Suicidal Tendencies (Two of my favorite bands at one point in my life) on the soundtrack for (skate board movie) Lords of Dogtown. ("Anyway, you probably know that they're turning the brilliant documentary, Dogtown & Z-Boys, on the early skateboarding scene into a shitty looking teen flick, Lords of Dogtown, with Mischa Barton."). He then compares the soundtrack from the original to the remake.

------

It just so happens that D.R.I. WILL be appearing on some upcoming soundtracks, one of which happens to be skater related:

"In case ya didn't see or hear, D.R.I. has a song on the new 'Backyard Wrestling 2' video game from Eidos Entertainment. Very kool game! And probably the best wrestling game and soundtrack ever."

"We are also expecting to have a song on the new 'Tony Hawk Underground' video game, and a new surfer movie called 'Bruce the Movie'."

------

Speaking of soundtracks, I'll take this opportunity to finally link to the info on the new Six Feet Under soundtrack everyone's been talking about (new Arcade Fire & Interpol, Death Cab, etc...)

------

The new Stars Wars movie (Revenge of the Sith) came out today, but the soundtrack's been out for weeks. Here's a review (of the soundtrack). Have you seen the movie? Is it good? It's supposed to be, but I'm having trouble believing it's possible after the last two.

------

Maybe the movie coming out based on Kurt Cobain will have a good soundtrack.

PopMatters: Magneta Lane vs. Thunderbirds Are Now!

PopMatters recently published reviews of two bands I've been following...

Thunderbirds Are Now! | Justamustache

"There is a certain joy to be derived from the sheer energy alone of Justamustache. Like chowing down on your favorite sugar-coated cereal on Saturday morning and watching a constant stream of poorly dubbed Japanese cartoons, this thing bounces off the walls demanding your attention." - full review (5/10) (but it at Insound)

Magneta Lane | The Constant Lover

"And if you're thinking it, you're right -- it's not fair for a male critic to put the burden of feminism on a young band just because they're chicks who sing from "a woman's perspective"." (huh who what?) - full review (6/10) (buy it at Insound)

More (as in more than above) Positive PopMatters reviews:

Various Artists | 4 Women No Cry (9/10) (buy it at Amazon)

33Hz @ Virgin Music Store

On Wednesday May 11th, 2005 I happened to be in the Union Square area of NYC around 6 PM, so I stopped by Virgin Records to catch the in-store performance by Brooklyn's 33Hz. (I missed the Spoon in-store in the same spot the day before)

"In 2001, Benny Lowe (vocals, guitar), Tim Wagner (keyboards), Gabe Moon (drums) and Rafe Terrizzi (bass, keyboards, vocals) collaborated to form a 70’s inspired future-rock ensemble. Pulling influence from their various musical backgrounds as well as their collaborative influences of 70’s glam rock and 80’s dance music, 33hz was able to forge a sound that is reminiscent of their inspiration of Chic, Steely Dan, Prince and Michael Jackson."

Their self-titled new album came out on April 26th. You can LISTEN TO SOME OF IT ON THEIR MYSPACE PAGE, and if you're in NYC you can see them live @ Rothko Friday night (May 20th, 2005)

The Boredoms | Seadrum/House Of Sun Album Stream

the Boredoms Back in March, we heard that the Boredoms signed with VICE Records...

"Defying the age-old tradition which says that freaky people who mellow over time have to put on suits and go to work for The Man, Japan's Boredoms have followed their own path, from anally-obsessed noise monsters to tribal-drumming hippies."

And they're playing some shows...

"Live Boredoms shows these days carry on the rhythmic vibe with three drummers (Yoshimi, ATR, and Yojiro) backing up eternal frontman Eye Yamataka."

05-17 Los Angeles, CA - Knitting Factory
05-19 San Francisco, CA - The Independent
05-21 Chicago, IL - Logan Square Auditorium
05-23 Victoriaville, Quebec - Festival Actuelle
05-25 New York City, NY - Bowery Ballroom

Jim Rourke (who's also playing at the Kitchen while he's here) opens the sold out Bowery show in NYC this Wednesday. According to someone seeking a ticket to the show via a duel Craigslist ad and blog post (with MP3s)...

"Prior to the Boredom's show there will be a concrete poetry reading and pedal effects jam session at Thurston Moore's loft. I can bring one, and only ONE of you proles with me (in exchange for two tickets of course). Several luminaries will be in attendance, Lou Reed and Arto Lindsay (so sick of seeing those two), LaMonte Young's older, wiser, brother Phineas, semiotician Gilberto Egreyes, and that one creepy experimental filmmaker who always stares at his fingernail beds." :-)

Insound says that "Of all the artists in Japan's thriving noise-music community, the Boredoms undoubtedly had the most fun." And Insound is where you can get a copy of Seadrum/House Of Sun (the new album on VICE).

VICE is where you can LISTEN TO THE 2 TRACK ALBUM ("On this record, two lengthy tracks manage a paradoxical blending of peaceful waves of sound with intense, churning rhythmic moments.")

I Sang Karaoke with Cory Branan | Lucero

(At least 2 years ago, maybe 3) About ten of us went to karaoke in one of those private karaoke rooms you can rent for someone's birthday. I hadn't heard of Cory Branan the singer until I asked my friend of a friend if he happened to sing for a living. It couldn't be possible that this guy was just really good at karaoke. He told me he did, and that he was in town to play Letterman and Mercury Lounge. After karaoke I told him I'd check out the show at "the Merc," but I never did.

(starstruck) I followed his career for a few weeks. Then I mostly forgot about it. Then I heard his name in a Lucero song. Ends up they're friends. I was a fan of Lucero's last album, though I didn't love them live when they opened for the Weakerthans @ Bowery Ballroom.

Lucero & Cory Branan play Bowery Ballroom in NYC on June 7th, 2005. All tour dates here.

Lucero's new album (Nobody's Darlings) comes out May 24th

Eugene Mirman Updates His Stuff, Tours

Eugene Mirman has a special voice because it makes me laugh no matter what he says. I just have to imagine him reading his latest e-mail update (which isn't hard becacuse he often reads letters on stage as part of his act) and I start cracking up.

He just updated his website with lots of new videos, so go watch him if you haven't heard/seen him yet. Then continue reading for his latest news and tour dates (including some with the Hold Steady)....

Built to Spill vs. Gang of Four

Old-school Built to Spill just played four sold-out shows in NYC. Older-school Gang of Four plays their third of three NYC shows tonight (followed by a DJ gig @ the afterparty)

I didn't go to any of the BTS shows, but did make it to the GOF one @ Tribeca Grand last night (two thumbs up). Here's what they're saying...

Built to Spill

"Now, there's inebriated, there's drunk, there's wasted, and then there was this girl - hovering in that "How is it possible that she's still standing upright?" zone."
- Tale of Two Cities

"They just don't make them like built to spill anymore. so good at irving last night."
- Catherine's Pita

"Last night stood out instantly when the band came out five strong - two extra guitarists instead of just one, the first time I'd seen that."
- One Louder

Gang of Four

"Together they walloped the crowd with their bass-thumping sound. Even the pink-haired mohawked guy upfront was dancing all over."
- Waved Rumor

"An incredible show. I mean really, really fantastic. I've seen some pretty great shows recently, but this one was enjoyable straight through."
- Extrawack

"They were great!"
- Central Village

Maximo Park

Maximo Park On March 9th, 2005 I talked about Maximo Park after hearing they were playing their first U.S. show ever at Rothko in NYC on March 15th. I did go to the show, but never wrote a word about it until now. The Rothko show was dubbed a pre-SXSW pep rally and Ultragrrrl and Karen were DJing in cheerleading outfits. As Maximo Park took the stage, the cheerleaders cheered, "When I say Maximo. You say Park. When I say Maximo, etc...). The house was full to over-capacity. The band took the stage and said something about their excellent introduction to American Culture (referring to the cheer), and of course something about how happy they were to be there. I stayed for most of their set. Honestly, I got bored. It seemed at that moment that the whole British dance-rock-new-wave-revival-whatever-you-feel-like-calling-it thing was officially tired (it's a feeling others get when they think of the Killers and the Bravery I think).

Jeddeth liked the show, but agreed that Maximo Park sounded like the rest of the pack. He points out Coolfer's "Same, but Different" post.

I did like opener Hot Chip a lot though. Music For Robots liked both bands a lot.

From NYC Maximo Park headed to Austin, Texas where they played the infamous SXSW party located in the house of blogger Ben Brown. I'm sure they played more shows in Texas too.

Since then the hype has been building. They are/were playing a lot of festivals. They lost their bag. They topped NME's "Chart".

Today they officially entered the hipster hall of fame.

I'll give them another try. I still need to listen to the album. YOU CAN LISTEN TO THE WHOLE ALBUM AT NME. What do you think?

Aziz Ansari likes NIN, performs @ Laughable Hype Tonight

Since first hearing about Aziz when he posted the video of his M.I.A. skit with Eugene Mirman, it seems like it's been all about Aziz.

Aziz talked about the secret Beck show.
Aziz was at the secret Beck show.
I saw Aziz perform with Eugene Mirman & Bobby Tisdale (and he was actually really funny, which was a relief)

Last night, Aziz was at Nine Inch Nails (ane he even posted a picture of my pants!). I was there too.

TONIGHT (May 17th, 2005) Aziz performs with other good comedians @ Gothamist's Movable/Laughable Hype show @ Tonic.

-----

Note: Currently Aziz Ansari ranks #7 in a google search for "Aziz". He is #1 for a search of "Aziz Ansari," but I think he should be the #1 "Aziz," so if you have a website and you like Aziz, link the word "Aziz" to his website.

Celebrities @ Shows via Gawker

"Saw Chris Rock tonight at the Nine Inch Nails show at Hammerstein Ballroom. He was rockin' out and singing along. Also saw shiny-headed former MTV VJ Matt Pinfield there, but does he count as a celebrity?"

Nine Inch Nails @ Hammerstein Ballroom, NYC | Pics

Matt Pinfield is also a fan of Benzos (see Tuesday night)

"Last night at the Fischerspooner show at the Canal Room, who walks up to the VIP table next to me but David Byrne. I almost passed out. He looked great, silver hair all spiky and cool, all-black outfit, attractive brunette with him who didn't seem to have fake breasts or a fake tan. The hipsters all ignored him- not sure if that means they didn't recognize him or that they were just too fucking indie rock to acknowledge his presence. I hate hipsters."

The Nine Inch Nails frontman is suing manager John Malm over claims that he duped him into signing a bad contract."

Thunderbirds are Now! live Reviews

Thunderbirds are Now! @ KF

Above photo of Thunderbirds are Now! from the Knitting Factory show on May 12th. I posted three more pictures that night. Here are some reviews from across the Internet...

"This show was perfect. Perfect venue (dark, dank, low-ceilinged basement), perfect audience (sardine-packed math rockers and tight-pants-hardcore kids), perfect length (30 minutes), perfect temperature (tropical), perfect smell (body odor + beer), perfect band."
- Thunderbirds Are Now! / Knitting Factory Old Office / May 12, 2005

"Okay so these guys were fucking awesome, really good live show, because they play like its the last song for every song"
- Thunderbirds Are Now! 05/12/05 The Knit

"Before an audience that could not have been over 50 heads, TAN! plied open our mouths and shoved down ear-splitting hooks, well-placed synth beeps and blips, and one of the most entertaining stage shows I’ve seen at the Ottobar."
- Thunderbirds Are Now! at the Ottobar | 5.14.2005

"They were pretty energetic, with echoes of Pixies, new wave(via the cool keyboards), and maybe just a bit of the Detroit garage rock aesthetic. One thing I realized about Sneaky Dees during the Thunderbirds Are Now! set was how spring-y the floor is in the venue."
- Thunderbirds Are Now! @ Sneaky Dees(Toronto, Ontario), May 6, 2005

"All of the guys in the band go nuts, but the keyboardist / vocalist Scott Allen goes completely bonkers. He went into the crowd a few times and did the spastic dance against the crowd. It was awesome."
- Thunderbirds Are Now! My Ears Are Shot! (with video)

"They’ll probably play in a larger place, to more people, then. Tonight though, they’ve managed to remind me what live music should be, to make me feel that Music itself is doing just fine, and I can’t wait for more people to feel this way."
- Supermarionation (Thunderbirds Are Now!, Knitting Factory Old Office)

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah @ Mercury Lounge | Pics

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

It was February 14th, 2005 and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah opened for The Kaiser Chiefs at Mercury Lounge. Quickly becoming local superstars, CYHSY channel Talking Heads at some of the hottest shows in NYC almost every week. Just over a year old, they've already played Lit, Pianos (including a residency), Mercury Lounge, Rothko, Sin-e, Crash Mansion (with the Fever), Northsix (with Ambulance Ltd), Maxwell's (with Rye Coalition), the 500 capacity Bowery Ballroom (with Radio 4), and more.

I recommend you download the MP3s they've posted on their website. The same MP3s are linked at Mystery & Misery.

Their first CD comes out soon, and they'll play The Delancey in NYC to celebrate the occasion on June 9th. Those in Alliston, MA can catch them on May 28th @ Great Scott.

Andrew Katchen profiled them for the NY Daily News (and rightfully gave CYHSY fan I Rock I Roll a plug)

MTV Invades Mercury Lounge | The Vitamen & Giraffes

Can't Get a Date Filming at Mercury Lounge

MTV was filming some new show called "Can't Get a Date" at Mercury Lounge in NYC last Saturday (May 7th, 2005). Jeff Hanson, Dante DeCaro, Saints & Lovers, The Giraffes, and The Vitamen were on the bill that night. According to one of the crew members, The Vitamen was somehow tied in to why they were there.

Speaking of The Giraffes and MTV: you really need to watch their new video. (Windows Media) (not on MTV) (don't watch if you don't like "sexy metal" and violence)

Peter Steele Dead?

I really hope this Friday the 13th redesign of Type O Negative's official website is a joke (possibly even by a hacker). Their website's been missing for a few weeks actually. The last strange pink incarnation can be seen in Google's cache.

Type O postponed their tour this past fall due to Peter's failing health. They never said exactly what was wrong with him. Then this.

Probably a joke. Maybe a hacker. Not really funny.

Sondre Lerche Moved to Brooklyn | In-Store Performance

Sound Fix Records reports...

"On Saturday, May 21, the Zincs are paying us a visit. Their new album on Thrill Jockey, "Zimmer," has been one of the more pleasant surprises of the year: a gorgeous CD of dark, melodic indie pop. Artanker Convoy brings their furious, funky jams to Sound Fix on Sunday, May 29. These guys have one of the best live acts around; don't miss it.

Then ... the great Sondre Lerche! We adored last year's "Two-Way Monologue," a delightful album of lush, hook-laden pop. The Norwegian heartthrob just moved to Williamsburg, so let's all give him a warm welcome for what promises to be a special solo set."

Gang of Four Interview | On Bloc Party, Futureheads, etc...

Rolling Stone interviews Gang of Four...

What do you think of new bands, like the Futureheads and Bloc Party, and their connection to your sound?

I think "respect." If writers want to say these bands are good -- and they're great -- but they're borrowing from Gang of Four, I mean, that's cool. I suppose I'm a little pissed that some of these bands are just borrowing freely from us. It's a difficult equation for me: Do I come down on any one band's side? Because there's tons of them! I think our integrity, our credibility, has remained intact. And if that's attached to these new bands, that's fine.

I think the live Gang of Four is the big differentiator, and, of course, the lyrics. There's nothing remotely close to us when it comes to being socially, politically and lyrically aggressive pains in the ass. Jon King was so amazing at writing those lyrics that hit the nail on the head every time about your everyday life, and I'm not hearing that in any of these new bands.

Mike Neuman's Friday the 13th Post | Hello Nurse, Gang of Four, Tattoo Convention

My name is Mike Neuman, and I am your guest-blogger for today. I am neither vegan, nor am I from Brooklyn, so I hope you'll accept me.

Gang of Four So today is Friday the 13th, and I have taken it upon myself to plan your entire day for you! You can thank me later. First thing's first. Pre-order Gang of Four's classic debut album, "Entertainment!" .It first came out in 1979/1980, depending on what country you live in. It was re-released in 1995 and quickly went out of print again. Now it's back again, this time with bonus live tracks. I can say without hesitation that this is one of the best albums of all time. Don't believe me? Pitchfork gave it a 9.5. Also check out Rolling Stone's original review of the album, way back in 1980. They are playing Irving Plaza on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Tickets are sold out, but if you hit Craigslist hard enough, you can probably score a pair.

OK, so got the CD pre-ordered and some sketchy dude is selling you Gang of Four tickets? Great, let's move along.

In honor of Friday the 13th, Bowery Tattoo will be giving tattooing people for only THIRTEEN DOLLARS! The catch? The only thing they will tattoo on you is the number "13". That's right, tomorrow after 1 PM, you can go into Bowery Tattoo and get a nice "13" tattooed on you for only 13 bucks! Mom will love it!

So in case getting meaningless numbers tattooed onto your body for life doesn't do it for you, you're in luck! The 8th Annual New York City Tattoo Convention is at Roseland all weekend long. Tickets are kind of pricey. $18 for the day, or $50 for all 3 days. But seriously, if you want to get tattooed, you can usually get great work from great artists from all over the world for much cheaper then you normally could.

Hello Nurse Speaking of Roseland, apparently Weezer played there last night. I wasn't there, and you weren't either. The Green Album, Maladroit, and now Make Believe. Sorry Rivers, but three strikes and you're out. "But Mike" you ask, "now who is going to quench my thirst for power-pop?" Well I'm glad you asked, because the excellent Hello Nurse, a local indie rock/power-pop 4-piece, are playing tonight at Crash Mansion. There is no cover before 11, and there is an open bar from 9 to 10. It's 21+.

Mastodon on Signing to a Major Label

Mastodon (who I saw at Bowery Ballroom last night) signed to Warner Brothers Records last month after "three major labels battled over them for more than six months."

They told MTV...

""It's a big step for a band like us that doesn't really have any radio hits or ... any plans to write any radio hits or anything like that," drummer Brann Dailor explained.

"We wanted to make sure that [Warner Bros.] knew that," guitarist Bill Kelliher added. "We told them, 'We're not going to change into a Backstreet Boys or anything like that.' We're not going to change our sound. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.""

Mastodon don't plan to write any radio hits for their major-label debut.

(also at above link: "Glenn Danzig is organizing his own summer metal festival (think of it as Ozzfest lite).")

"TV networks faced a record $7.9 million in regulatory fines this year, and the 1st Amendment hits just keep on coming. PBS also saw many of its stations pull an episode of Postcards with Buster because it included a child with two "mommies". Love is Stronger Than Death (Lisa Marie Presley & Angela McCluskey)

A LISA MARIE PRESLEY FAN @ THE SUPPER CLUB IN NYCA Lisa Marie Presley fan

Spending eight hours a week compiling shows happening in NYC for no money has a few benefits. I get the occasional free ticket to a show like Lisa Marie Presley and Angela McCluskey at the Supper Club (May 10th, 2005). Would I want to go to this show if it wasn't free? Yeah (I'm completely in love with Angela McCluskey). Would I actually spend the $32.50 + ticketbastard charges to go to Times Square on a Tuesday evening to see this show? No.

Above picture of one of Lisa's biggest fans.

Last time I saw Angela Mcluskey @ the no-longer-in-existence Fez, Craig Wedren sang backup on "Love is Stronger Than Death." Last night it was the song Angela chose to close her set. I found out today it was originally by The The, and I'm loving the original as much as I love the cover.

Download the cover version & read/see a full show review @ Daily Refill.

Download the original @ art is the new religion.

Craig Wedren (who I did not see in attendance this time, but was at the comedy show I recently went to) is currently working on the music for the Stella TV show on Comedy Central.

"For better or worse, Reznor's legacy was decided many moons ago, and though it isn't likely to win back parts of his fanbase that felt shunned by The Fragile, it's a commendable start to earning him a new one." 69% says Cokemachineglow

The Mars Volta @ Roseland Ballroom, NYC | Pics

The Mars Volta @ Roseland Ballroom

I am eternally grateful to my friend for inviting me to The Mars Volta @ Roseland Ballroom on Thursday May 5th, 2005 (Cinco de Mayo! & the first of two nights they were playing there to commemorate that very holiday). Did it hurt that I wasn't going to New Order @ the nearby Hammerstein Ballroom (that I had tickets to)? At first. Am I happy with my decision? Very much so. The show rocked. I predict stadium-sized success for The Mars Volta. In fact, any venue smaller than a stadium is too small for the awesome (and very, very loud) sounds they manage to produce.

"No prog performance would be complete without some self-indulgent noodling, and unfortunately, the Mars Volta are all too fond of this practice." - Amy Phillips for Newsday

Admittedly, their "noodling" did get boring at first (I wondered if I was going to like the show during the first 20 minutes), but I actually grew to like it more and more as time went on. What seemed a little boring at first, completely swept me away with it by the end. I definitely don't agree with her statement that "The Mars Volta had become a reminder of why progressive rock died in the first place." The sold-out-two-nights-in-a-row 3000-3500 person capacity crowd didn't agree either. All I heard was loud applause.

The Mars Volta @ Roseland Ballroom

"here we are with the only prog band that matters (Radiohead doesn’t count). The only band big enough for people to care if they make an album composed out of one song seventy-six minutes long (it’s actually broken up into, alternately, five suites on the record’s tracklisting and twelve tracks on the actual CD, but who’s counting when you’re sitting in your room with your buddies and sharing a joint and listening to this thing, eh?)." - Stylus on Frances the Mute

Sufjan Stevens Summer Tour | NYC Dates

As reported on Pitchfork and More Cowbell the other day, Sufjan Stevens is touring this summer in support of his new album Illinois. The revealed tour dates are in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, British Columbia, Utah, Colorado, and Arizona, so I didn't rush to post them.

Then today I found out Sufjan is playing August 19th and 20th at Bowery Ballroom in NYC, and that tickets go on sale today at noon. Up until now, Sufjan has stuck to the smaller venues (Southpaw, Mercury Lounge, Knitting Factory, etc...) (not counting the Plug Awards at Webster Hall). I want to believe that two nights in a row at Bowery is the natural progression on his rise to fame mixed with the anticipated popularity of his next album, but I realize I can't discount the popularity he must have received from his association with the OC.

Tony Conrad, The Kitchen & Jim O'Rourke

Tony Conrad According to Jim O'Rourke's Drag City site, he's playing with the Boredoms on May 25th at Knitting Factory and with Tony Conrad on May 24th at The Kitchen. The truth is that he and the Boredoms are playing Bowery Ballroom on May 25th (sold out), and that I have no idea if he's actually playing at the May 24th thing. More details on that after some quotes...

----

"Tony Conrad, best known for playing violin with the Theatre of Eternal Music in the early sixties, and for his more recent violin-centred compositions, admits that his introduction to his instrument was mostly negative." - from an Interview with Tony Conrad

"Violin player Tony Conrad was one of the pioneers of New York minimalism, of microtonal music and of "deep listening". He worked in 1962 on Lamonte Young's "Dream Music" project with the likes of John Cale and Angus MacLise (both future Velvet Underground)." - from a biography of Tony Conrad

"I don't know a better way to describe Chicago (the city not the band) guitarist Jim O'Rourke than to say that he's a gadfly. Here's a young guy who's had his hand in everything, working with or producing or remixing the likes of Sonic Youth, John Fahey, Faust, Tortoise, Tony Conrad, Barbara Manning, Red Crayola, Guided By Voices and... well, it'd be easier to tell you who he HASN'T worked with" - from an interview with Jim O'Rourke

"Well, I have them, and yes, they are amazing, and they have cemented my opinion that Tony Conrad is a genius. Just listen to 4 violins 1964 to get an idea what these repressed recordings sound like." - Jim on Tony

"Founded in 1971 by video artists Woody and Steina Vasulka, The Kitchen is internationally known as a leading center for video, music, dance, performance, new media and literature. The first institution to focus exclusively on cutting-edge, multidisciplinary works, it has been a powerful force in shaping the cultural landscape of this country. Over the last thirty years The Kitchen has documented every one of its performances with video and/or audiotape." - from the Amazon album description for "From The Kitchen Archives - New Music New York 1979" featuring Tony Conrad, Philip Glass, and others

----

On May 18th and 24th (2005), the Kitchen is hosting special Tony Conrad events (performance/video). Jim O'Rourke is listed as the curator. Keep reading for exact details...

This “minimalist spectacle” features a projected film loop of black and white images, alongside a stellar group of string players in an appeal for the need for peace in a time of war. Quadranga (2004) is a trio for amplified strings that rewrites the musical form of the popular Afro-Latin dance the Charanga. Preceding this performance will be the screening of three recent video works--Grading Tips for Teachers (2001), Hart (2001) and Tony’s Oscular Pets (2003) -that humorously echo Conrad’s ongoing engagement with themes of discipline and control.

Related Conrad film, video, and lecture events will be held from May 19th-22nd at Anthology Film Archives. Please consult www.anthologyfilmarchives.org for more information.

Project Save CBGB & OMFUG

CBGB Three days ago I posted an article that reported CBGB was definitely closing. Today I found out there's an organization working to Save CBGB.

Project Save CBGB & OMFUG is "the official Project Save CBGB site based in New York City." (as seen in the NY Post and on Stereogum yesterday)

According to a press release on the site, "Jonathan Demme, Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye, Deborah Harry of Blondie, Juliette Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, Tommy Ramone, Charlotte Lesher (mother of the late Joey Ramone), Arturo Vega (artistic director for the Ramones), Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads, Richard Lloyd of Television, Little Steven, Legs McNeill, Richard Hell, Fab 5 Freddy, Seymour Stein of Sire Records, Cheetah Chrome of the Dead Boys, Bob Gruen, the Bullys, Richard H.D. Manitoba, Dennis McNamara, Daniel Wolff, John Holstrom of Punk Magazine, John Foxworthy of Garage Radio, cultural sociologist Dr. Donna Gaines, Rockefeller University Professor Dr. Sanford Simon, an entrepreneur and survivor of spina bifida, and a teacher in Honol" are all working to save CBGB.

Part of the plan is to give CBGB landmark status.

What Does Joey Ramone's mother say?

Supporter Juliette Lewis is on tour with the Licks. Tickets are on sale for their May 28th show at Bowery Ballroom in NYC. I was at their last NYC show.

Supporter Fab 5 Freddy makes an appearance at The Brooklyn Museum tonight (May 7th)

Supporter Deborah Harry recently made an appearance with Kelly Osbourne at Charm School.

Life of Agony are playing CBGB in June.

Despite these efforts, CBGB still might move to Vegas.

The Junior Boys @ Bowery Ballroom

Above and below photos are both of the Junior Boys playing at Bowery Ballroom on Thursday May 5th, 2005. "They formed somewhere around 1999 in Hamilton, Canada, the same town that brought us Manitoba and Kieran '4Tet' Hebden’s text label." Manitoba is now Caribou, and that's who they were opening for along with 4Tet and the Russian Futurists.

One Louder thought they were great. Me too. Their CD is good too. (you can hear them on their official site)

They also recently remixed Billie Holiday for Verve Remixed, Vol. 3

Jean-Michael Basquiat | Museum, Website & Fab 5 Freddy

Basquiat Through June 5th, 2005, the Brooklyn Museum has a special "exhibition of Jean-Michel Basquiat's paintings, works on paper, and sculptures." The exhibition will eventually move to the MOCA in LA (California) and the MFA in Houston (Texas).

Tonight's First Saturday is especially cool. On the bill:
- Sridhar Shanmugam’s ensemble performs music and dance from South India.
- Haitian-American violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain performs a mix of classical, jazz, and hip-hop, inspired by paintings in Basquiat.
- Fab 5 Freddy, hip-hop Renaissance man, connects his friend Basquiat’s work to the 1980s music scene.
- Fab 5 Freddy hosts a dance party of Basquiat’s favorite new wave, hip-hop, and pop, featuring DJ B. Dub and other friends of the artist.
- DJ Sintalentos spins soul, funk, and hip-hop.

Those everywhere can learn about Basquiat and check out the collection on a special website.

The Mountain Goats eat Vegetarian Paradise | The Sunset Tree

Today's am/pm newspaper had an interview with John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats. He said his favorite things about NYC are the restaurant Vegetarian Paradise #2 ("I seriously have dreams of going there, they are so amazing"), The Strand (bookstore), and the Lush store (for shampoo).

John, I also recommend Red Bamboo. It's right next store (same owners even...I think)

Largehearted Boy tells us what John likes to read.

The new Mountain Goats CD ("The Sunset Tree") was released on April 26th.

CBGB to DEFINITELY Close??

We've been following the possible closing of CBGB for a while. No one has said anything about the club definitely closing yet. So what does the Georgia State University Newspaper know that we don't know?

"Now, due to the inability of the owner to pay $38,000 a month in rent while still maintaining the reasonable beer and ticket prices and giving untried acts a shot at the spotlight, CBGB’s will shut down at the end of February or the beginning of March. No exact date has been announced for a final show, perhaps intentionally"

In the meantime, Life of Agony is playing there.

Who can tell me how many times Craig Finn says "Hoodrat" on the new Hold Steady album?

According to from Rap to Rehab, the definition of "hoodrat" is: "Female, generally sexually promiscuous, and not upwardly mobile 'Homies in the hood labeled her as a hoodrat'"

If you haven't heard Separation Sunday yet, I highly recommend you change that fact.

Bright Eyes on Leno

In case you missed it, Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) just played Leno dressed like a cowboy (very Jack White). He sang (bleeped curses and all) the anti-Bush "When the President Talks to God." Joey TOTC, who also alerted me to the show, pointed out that Leno is a serious republican.

Within minutes there were two comments on a three month old post...

AGAINST: "He is f*cking stupid, and I am a democrat. This guy is clearly confused about the majority of if not all of the issues. I saw him on Leno and literally laughed my ass off at how idiotic he was."

FOR: "The Best Song I have ever heard... I thought he was very clear with what he was saying... I'm a Democrat, and i think Conor captured what most democrats have been feeling for the past 5 years in a great song..."

1) Who has a photo or video I can post?
2) What do you think? (and I mostly mean about that outfit)

Download that song and more at Saddle Creek's website.

Jon Brion @ Tonic, NYC | Pics (& lots of Links)

Jon Brion @ Tonic

Jon Brion played two shows (early and late) at Tonic in NYC on April 27th, 2005. I was lucky enough to make it to the late show and get these photos.

'Amazing, Amazing, Amazing' is how to describe a Jon Brion show. People living in Los Angeles get to see him almost every Friday night at Largo. Thanks to the Tribeca Film Festival, where he also spoke, New York got to experience his magic. He's a musical genius that can sing and play every instrument. He even has a musical sense of humor. The crowd was cracking up during his comical opening rendition of "Stairway to Heaven."

Stream a song at NPR.

"Brion is quite possibly the ultimate one-man band. A virtuosic musician, he used live tape loops to capture each individual instrument's part as he played it, layering drums, piano, bass and rhythm guitar one at a time before stepping up to the microphone to actually sing the song. Everything about Brion's performance was effortless, from his frenetic guitar solos to his piano ballads to his astounding repertoire of cover songs." - Daily Bruin

Someone posted three (kind of rough) live streaming Jon Brion videos:
1) video of Jon Brion as Tom Waits doing Radiohead
2) A one man band (video 1)
3) A one man band (video 2)

Jon Brion @ Tonic

We heard Prince, David Bowie, Velvet Underground, Led Zeppelin, Brian Eno and other covers, as well as originals from his 2001 solo album, Meaningless.

The Village Broadsheet scored an interview with Brion a few days before the NY shows. It's full of good stuff, but I'll just copy and paste this bit...

"A week prior to our interview, he was in London (at Abbey Road! Abbey fucking Road!!), working on his own recordings. Exciting news for all of us Brion fans, who have been clammoring for a proper vocal album from the man since 2001, when his brilliant debut Meaningless crept its way into our headphones and heads. Between his soundtrack work (I Heart Huckabees, Magnolia), productions for other artists (Fiona Apple, Rhett Miller, Aimee Mann), and boffo studio musician gigs (Macy Gray and many others), it’s easy to forget that Brion is a first-rate performer in his own right. As he put it, “I’ve had a high quality of distraction in my recent history.” You ain’t just whistlin’ Dixie, brother."

Jon Brion @ Tonic

Good news. He promised he'd be going on tour (but said don't call it a "tour") this year. He even hinted at a week long residency in NYC. Be excited.

The Decemberists @ NYU

I've seen the Decemberists so many times in so many different venues. I was lucky enough to see their first NYC appearance ever at Knitting Factory in May 2003. I followed them to Mercury Lounge, Luxx (now Trash), Bowery Ballroom, and Webster Hall. I had tickets to see them at Maxwells, but never used them (family emergency). I saw them in the NYC KEXP studios, and I saw them while I was in Atlanta, Georgia (at the Echo Lounge). I saw Colin play some solo shows at Fez. Last week (April 28th, 2005) I saw them at NYU's Kimmel Center.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'm making it to the sold out Irving Plaza show this Thursday, though I plan on checking them out at Warsaw in Brooklyn in May.

Roots Manuva @ Knitting Factory Saturday

I thought buying my ticket for Roots Manuva 2.5 months ago was a good move. Ends up I should have waited. Tickets are still on sale.

"Step 1: Start with the Voice. As the leading practitioner of U.K. rap, Roots Manuva (a.k.a. Rodney Smith) singlehandedly made British hip-hop credible – way before the Streets and Dizzee Rascal hit."

"Step 5: See Roots Manuva Live. Four out of five beat doctors agree that the current show (featuring live backing band The Manuvadelics) is “The Shiznit” (ex. F). Last year they rocked massive crowds at the Reading, Leeds, and Montreux Jazz festivals across the pond. Soon, Manuva will be appearing on a stage somewhat near you (only five North American dates, sorry!). However, this does present an opportunity to experience Roots Manuva thoroughly."

Brooklyn: Coney Island & Neil Diamond

Brooklyn Roads "The amusements of Coney Island are humming again, fewer than in their prime last century but certainly with a lively carny buzz, complete with freak show. Coaster buffs adore the Cyclone, and they should."

"Lundy's. The Lundy brothers are long gone (there's an interesting story there; you won't read it here), and it's had a ride bumpier than the Cyclone's—but the restaurant, its raw bar and its pure Brooklynism have survived.

Neil Diamond, I'm told, was a regular here. Woody Allen's picture with the owners is on the wall."

The Freakin Ligers are playing Bowery Ballroom

According to the Anti-Liger Alliance, Ligers are "half lion, half tiger, all terror." According to Bowery Ballroom, the Ligers are headlining a show there on Friday May 20th. Let's face it. The Ligers are not a band. If they do exist, they aren't headlining Bowery Ballroom on a Friday night. This one has secret show written all over it.

According to Let the Good Times Roll, "The special guest who is slated to perform at NY2LON gig at The Bowery Ballroom is none other than the Ligers. You’ll love it. Just go."

My question is whether I'll love it more than Andrew Bird @ Knitting Factory, Porcupine Tree at Iving Plaza, Angels of Light @ Northsix, and Psychic TV at The Hook. Oh the dilemmas.

Pre-Order Annie Anniemal | As Seen in the NY Times

Annie's Anniemal is finally getting a U.S. releaes on June 7th. Pre-order it from Insound now.

You may know Annie from the NY Times...

"In the meantime, Annie may soon discover a downside to being American indie rockers' favorite pop princess. Hipsters who hailed her when she was obscure singer from an exotic Northern land may recoil if and when she starts jostling for "TRL" airtime with the Simpson sisters. But Annie has a decent handle on the fickleness and absurdities of pop taste.

"It's weird when people tell me that they like me but would never listen to Kylie Minogue or Britney. I'm not quite sure why, but I'm seen as, you know, somehow cool. My music is the pop that they're allowed to like." She smiles. "At least for the moment." "

Man Killed Outside Bowery Ballroom

"Lam had been closing up the shop at 7:30 p.m. Friday when he emerged to see a young man sprawled faceup four paces away. The young man wore what turned out to be a white Yankees jersey, but the logo was obscured by the big bloodstain spreading across the front.

"Tall kid, good-looking kid, young kid," Lam recalled. "Moving a little bit, you know. I see him feeling pain. He's very, very hurt. Shaking."

Someone from the Bowery Ballroom was already there and was calling 911 from a cell phone. Lam had heard no gunshot and decided the young man must have been stabbed."

Ed Harcourt @ Pianos, NYC | Pics

Ed Harcourt @ Pianos

Ed Harcourt recently finished a small east coast tour in small venues to support his new album (Strangers). I went to the April 20th, 2005 show at Pianos in NYC. Ed is a talented guy, but I was stuck in the way back, so I ended up listening to most of the show from the upstairs room where they play the performance from downstairs for free. It was OK. Not my favorite performer, but someone I definitely took the opportunity to see when someone offered me their extra ticket for free.

Tiny Mix Tapes gave Strangers a 3/5. PopMatters liked it more than that.
