Clap Your Hands Say Yeah @ Mercury Lounge | Pics

It was February 14th, 2005 and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah opened for The Kaiser Chiefs at Mercury Lounge. Quickly becoming local superstars, CYHSY channel Talking Heads at some of the hottest shows in NYC almost every week. Just over a year old, they've already played Lit, Pianos (including a residency), Mercury Lounge, Rothko, Sin-e, Crash Mansion (with the Fever), Northsix (with Ambulance Ltd), Maxwell's (with Rye Coalition), the 500 capacity Bowery Ballroom (with Radio 4), and more.
I recommend you download the MP3s they've posted on their website. The same MP3s are linked at Mystery & Misery.
Their first CD comes out soon, and they'll play The Delancey in NYC to celebrate the occasion on June 9th. Those in Alliston, MA can catch them on May 28th @ Great Scott.
Andrew Katchen profiled them for the NY Daily News (and rightfully gave CYHSY fan I Rock I Roll a plug)

MTV Invades Mercury Lounge | The Vitamen & Giraffes

MTV was filming some new show called "Can't Get a Date" at Mercury Lounge in NYC last Saturday (May 7th, 2005). Jeff Hanson, Dante DeCaro, Saints & Lovers, The Giraffes, and The Vitamen were on the bill that night. According to one of the crew members, The Vitamen was somehow tied in to why they were there.
Speaking of The Giraffes and MTV: you really need to watch their new video. (Windows Media) (not on MTV) (don't watch if you don't like "sexy metal" and violence)

Peter Steele Dead?
I really hope this Friday the 13th redesign of Type O Negative's official website is a joke (possibly even by a hacker). Their website's been missing for a few weeks actually. The last strange pink incarnation can be seen in Google's cache.
Type O postponed their tour this past fall due to Peter's failing health. They never said exactly what was wrong with him. Then this.
Probably a joke. Maybe a hacker. Not really funny.

Sondre Lerche Moved to Brooklyn | In-Store Performance
Sound Fix Records reports...
"On Saturday, May 21, the Zincs are paying us a visit. Their new album on Thrill Jockey, "Zimmer," has been one of the more pleasant surprises of the year: a gorgeous CD of dark, melodic indie pop. Artanker Convoy brings their furious, funky jams to Sound Fix on Sunday, May 29. These guys have one of the best live acts around; don't miss it.
Then ... the great Sondre Lerche! We adored last year's "Two-Way Monologue," a delightful album of lush, hook-laden pop. The Norwegian heartthrob just moved to Williamsburg, so let's all give him a warm welcome for what promises to be a special solo set."

Gang of Four Interview | On Bloc Party, Futureheads, etc...
Rolling Stone interviews Gang of Four...
What do you think of new bands, like the Futureheads and Bloc Party, and their connection to your sound?
I think "respect." If writers want to say these bands are good -- and they're great -- but they're borrowing from Gang of Four, I mean, that's cool. I suppose I'm a little pissed that some of these bands are just borrowing freely from us. It's a difficult equation for me: Do I come down on any one band's side? Because there's tons of them! I think our integrity, our credibility, has remained intact. And if that's attached to these new bands, that's fine.
I think the live Gang of Four is the big differentiator, and, of course, the lyrics. There's nothing remotely close to us when it comes to being socially, politically and lyrically aggressive pains in the ass. Jon King was so amazing at writing those lyrics that hit the nail on the head every time about your everyday life, and I'm not hearing that in any of these new bands.
Tour Dates:
5/12: Chicago, Metro
5/13: Detroit, The Majestic
5/14: Toronto, Phoenix
5/16: Boston, Avalon
5/17: New York, Irving Plaza

Mike Neuman's Friday the 13th Post | Hello Nurse, Gang of Four, Tattoo Convention
My name is Mike Neuman, and I am your guest-blogger for today. I am neither vegan, nor am I from Brooklyn, so I hope you'll accept me.
So today is Friday the 13th, and I have taken it upon myself to plan your entire day for you! You can thank me later. First thing's first. Pre-order Gang of Four's classic debut album, "Entertainment!" .It first came out in 1979/1980, depending on what country you live in. It was re-released in 1995 and quickly went out of print again. Now it's back again, this time with bonus live tracks. I can say without hesitation that this is one of the best albums of all time. Don't believe me? Pitchfork gave it a 9.5. Also check out Rolling Stone's original review of the album, way back in 1980. They are playing Irving Plaza on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Tickets are sold out, but if you hit Craigslist hard enough, you can probably score a pair.
OK, so got the CD pre-ordered and some sketchy dude is selling you Gang of Four tickets? Great, let's move along.
In honor of Friday the 13th, Bowery Tattoo will be giving tattooing people for only THIRTEEN DOLLARS! The catch? The only thing they will tattoo on you is the number "13". That's right, tomorrow after 1 PM, you can go into Bowery Tattoo and get a nice "13" tattooed on you for only 13 bucks! Mom will love it!
So in case getting meaningless numbers tattooed onto your body for life doesn't do it for you, you're in luck! The 8th Annual New York City Tattoo Convention is at Roseland all weekend long. Tickets are kind of pricey. $18 for the day, or $50 for all 3 days. But seriously, if you want to get tattooed, you can usually get great work from great artists from all over the world for much cheaper then you normally could.
Speaking of Roseland, apparently Weezer played there last night. I wasn't there, and you weren't either. The Green Album, Maladroit, and now Make Believe. Sorry Rivers, but three strikes and you're out. "But Mike" you ask, "now who is going to quench my thirst for power-pop?" Well I'm glad you asked, because the excellent Hello Nurse, a local indie rock/power-pop 4-piece, are playing tonight at Crash Mansion. There is no cover before 11, and there is an open bar from 9 to 10. It's 21+.

Mastodon on Signing to a Major Label
Mastodon (who I saw at Bowery Ballroom last night) signed to Warner Brothers Records last month after "three major labels battled over them for more than six months."
They told MTV...
""It's a big step for a band like us that doesn't really have any radio hits or ... any plans to write any radio hits or anything like that," drummer Brann Dailor explained.
"We wanted to make sure that [Warner Bros.] knew that," guitarist Bill Kelliher added. "We told them, 'We're not going to change into a Backstreet Boys or anything like that.' We're not going to change our sound. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.""
Mastodon don't plan to write any radio hits for their major-label debut.
(also at above link: "Glenn Danzig is organizing his own summer metal festival (think of it as Ozzfest lite).")

"TV networks faced a record $7.9 million in regulatory fines this year, and the 1st Amendment hits just keep on coming. This past Veteran's Day, 66 ABC affiliates refused to air Saving Private Ryan for fear of public outcries over violence and language. PBS also saw many of its stations pull an episode of Postcards with Buster because it included a child with two "mommies". Perhaps no single incident incited more angry pontification than the 15 November 2004 edition of Monday Night Football."

Love is Stronger Than Death (Lisa Marie Presley & Angela McCluskey)
A LISA MARIE PRESLEY FAN @ THE SUPPER CLUB IN NYC
Spending eight hours a week compiling shows happening in NYC for no money has a few benefits. I get the occasional free ticket to a show like Lisa Marie Presley and Angela McCluskey at the Supper Club (May 10th, 2005). Would I want to go to this show if it wasn't free? Yeah (I'm completely in love with Angela McCluskey). Would I actually spend the $32.50 + ticketbastard charges to go to Times Square on a Tuesday evening to see this show? No.
Above picture of one of Lisa's biggest fans.
Last time I saw Angela Mcluskey @ the no-longer-in-existence Fez, Craig Wedren sang backup on "Love is Stronger Than Death." Last night it was the song Angela chose to close her set. I found out today it was originally by The The, and I'm loving the original as much as I love the cover.
Download the cover version & read/see a full show review @ Daily Refill.
Download the original @ art is the new religion.
Craig Wedren (who I did not see in attendance this time, but was at the comedy show I recently went to) is currently working on the music for the Stella TV show on Comedy Central.

The Mars Volta @ Roseland Ballroom, NYC | Pics

I am eternally grateful to my friend for inviting me to The Mars Volta @ Roseland Ballroom on Thursday May 5th, 2005 (Cinco de Mayo! & the first of two nights they were playing there to commemorate that very holiday). Did it hurt that I wasn't going to New Order @ the nearby Hammerstein Ballroom (that I had tickets to)? At first. Am I happy with my decision? Very much so. The show rocked. I predict stadium-sized success for The Mars Volta. In fact, any venue smaller than a stadium is too small for the awesome (and very, very loud) sounds they manage to produce.
"No prog performance would be complete without some self-indulgent noodling, and unfortunately, the Mars Volta are all too fond of this practice." - Amy Phillips for Newsday
Admittedly, their "noodling" did get boring at first (I wondered if I was going to like the show during the first 20 minutes), but I actually grew to like it more and more as time went on. What seemed a little boring at first, completely swept me away with it by the end. I definitely don't agree with her statement that "The Mars Volta had become a reminder of why progressive rock died in the first place." The sold-out-two-nights-in-a-row 3000-3500 person capacity crowd didn't agree either. All I heard was loud applause.

"here we are with the only prog band that matters (Radiohead doesn’t count). The only band big enough for people to care if they make an album composed out of one song seventy-six minutes long (it’s actually broken up into, alternately, five suites on the record’s tracklisting and twelve tracks on the actual CD, but who’s counting when you’re sitting in your room with your buddies and sharing a joint and listening to this thing, eh?)." - Stylus on Frances the Mute
buy Mars Volta stuff @ Insound

"Unlike its '70s forbearers, who were steamrollered under the onslaught of punk, the Mars Volta have been embraced by the Mohawks-and-skateboards set, which turned out in force for the second of two sold-out nights at the Roseland Ballroom on Friday." - Amy Phillips

Sufjan Stevens Summer Tour | NYC Dates
As reported on Pitchfork and More Cowbell the other day, Sufjan Stevens is touring this summer in support of his new album Illinois. The revealed tour dates are in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, British Columbia, Utah, Colorado, and Arizona, so I didn't rush to post them.
Then today I found out Sufjan is playing August 19th and 20th at Bowery Ballroom in NYC, and that tickets go on sale today at noon. Up until now, Sufjan has stuck to the smaller venues (Southpaw, Mercury Lounge, Knitting Factory, etc...) (not counting the Plug Awards at Webster Hall). I want to believe that two nights in a row at Bowery is the natural progression on his rise to fame mixed with the anticipated popularity of his next album, but I realize I can't discount the popularity he must have received from his association with the OC.
