Other Passengers @ Mercury Lounge

These photos from Other Passengers' May 19th, 2005 show at Mercury Lounge in NYC. Read their Gothamist interview. Tomorrow (May 29th, 2005) they play "Rock and Roll Brunch" in Williamsburg. Check out their show page for more info.

Other Passengers @ Mercury Lounge

"If you think that the doom and gloom, post-punk NYC scene has devolved into nothing but a string of bland Interpol-imitators, you need a heavy dose of Other Passengers’ tense and twisting style of indie-rock. Gripping in its eerie darkness, exciting in its motley group of influences, Other Passengers’ sound is something that any fan of glowering, atmospheric post-punk should hear." - Delusions of Adequacy

Louis XIV Porn | Suicide Girls Video

Louis XIV is one of those bands everyone hates (except the people paying to fill up large venues to see them play). How long does it take to go from cool to uncool?

If you don't like them, but you like naked Suicide Girls, then you'll still want to watch their new video for the song "Paper Doll". (Not Safe for Work)

The 2005 NY Press Summer Guide

Here's a sampling of the 2005 NY Press Summer Guide...

Best brooklyn nature trip

Canoeing the Gowanus Canal

"Please stand up. Running late one day from Carroll Gardens to Park Slope, we stumbled on a truly romantic wooden bridge spanning the Canal on Carroll between Bond and Third. We had always assumed (in best hipster-asshole fashion) there was nothing between the two neighborhoods. Though we'd glimpsed the Canal from the Smith & 9th F/G stop before, this was a revelation, replete with the childhood frisson of discovering the sewage-treatment plant's secret entrance. Further investigation revealed that the Canal was formed in the 19th century out of a bunch of creeks, went on to facilitate Brooklyn's heavy industry, and was eventually rendered obsolete by the BQE..."

Best free concert series for deviled eggs and a box of wine

Celebrate Brooklyn

"Life is good. At most outdoor concerts, we catch more elbows than notes and see more haircuts than bands. Then there's the ever present danger of spilling our $7 Bud—or having a dollar's worth of someone else's land on our lap. So taking in a night of music on the sprawling knoll of Prospect Park is a welcome change of pace. The atmosphere is relaxed and the crowd ranges from scenester to oldster, all sitting on blankets in front their pic-a-nic baskets. People pass around sleeves of crackers, chunks of Gouda and, because cans and bottles are banned, that trusty box of Franzia table red...."

Best Reason to Visit Coney Island ASAP

Because it's your last chance

"Sad. At the end of the summer, thanks to some shortsighted city planners and no-sighted developers, everything you love about gritty old Coney Island is going to be swept away. A few token landmarks may be spared for the sake of postcard sales—the Cyclone, the Wonder Wheel—but you can say goodbye to the souvenir shops that rent beach chairs, the fried clam stands, the Boardwalk Nathan's and—god help us all—Ruby's Bar. And with them the characters who made Coney what it is—namely, one of the last bastions of rabid individuality left in New York."

I could of sworn they were gonna say because of the Village Voice's annual Siren Festival.

The Decemberists show @ Warsaw in Brooklyn, NY last night (May 26th, 2005) was so, so good. It was their last show on this tour to support Picaresque.

The Decemberists @ Warsaw

The Decemberists @ Warsaw

From their entrance on stage in traditional Polish costumes (Warsaw is actually a Polish club & they lent them the clothes) to the Petra Haden solo number to the Colin vs Chris "Richie Sambora" Funk guitar battle to to the entire crowd sitting and shushing on Colin's command to the special surprise rendition of the Tain to close the show, the show was high energy and amazing.

Ditch iTunes, Use Winamp for your iPod

People that will make fun of you about this type of thing make fun of me all the time. I hate iTunes, and I love Winamp (classic skin only). I only use iTunes to sync my iPod (against my will). I listen to all my music in Winamp. There's been this iPod plug-in for Winamp for a while, but apparently it just got good.

"IPod users are raving about a plug-in that makes the Winamp digital jukebox a better way to manage the iPod than Apple's iTunes. The plug-in, called ml_iPod, allows iPod users to bypass iTunes and manage music collections in Winamp instead. The iPod is supposed to work with iTunes only. A new version of the software was released Monday."

THANK YOU MAKER OF THIS.

""A lot of the feedback I get is people thanking me for freeing them from iTunes," said Fisher. "It shows the dissatisfaction people have with iTunes.""

Chuck Klosterman Defines Music Genres

"...reading rock magazines must be very confusing to people who only listen to rock music casually. Whenever journalists write about music, we always operate under the assumption that certain genres are self-evident and that placing a given band into one of those categories serves an expository purpose. Just as often, an artist will be described as a synthesis of two equally obscure subgenres, and we’re all supposed to do the sonic math ourselves. However, this only helps the informed; that kind of description is useful to those who have already conquered the rock lexicon. What we need is a glossary of terms so we can all share an equal playing field."

Indie Comedians | As Seen in the NY Post

Jessi Klein The cover of the "New York Pulse" (inside the NY Post) today features NYC's indie comedians ("Alt-mockers"). These are the very comedians you often see covered on this blog, the Apiary, Gothamist, and...well every other blog. Jessi Klein (pictured) and Paul Sheer, who performed in Gothamist's Laughable Hype show two weeks ago, are pictured. Bobby Tisdale & Eugene Mirman, the stars of Piano's recent Invite Them Up taping, are there too.

The article begins...

"Here's how a young comic in New York City can tell if they're funny: The Shins ask you to be their opening act. You go to a Bright Eyes show and Conor Oberst's fans mob you. Wilco's Jeff Tweedy races down to see your act - right after he's played a sold-out show at the Garden - and quotes your own material to your face. You're sitting at home, watching 'The O.C.' and Seth Cohen name-checks your show."

The Flaming Lips | The Fearless Freaks

The Fearless Freaks is a new movie about The Flaming Lips. It came out on DVD last week, and it's playing in a few theaters. From Amazon...

"Equal parts punk and psychedelia, the Flaming Lips emerged from Oklahoma City as one of the most bracing bands of the late 1980's. The Fearless Freaks documents their rise from Butthole Surfers-imitating noisemakers to grand poobahs of orchestral pop masterpieces. Filmmaker Bradley Beesely had the good fortune of living in the same neighborhood as lead Lip Wayne Coyne, who quickly enlisted his buddy to document his band's many concerts and assorted exploits." ....more

According to the movie's official website, it premiered at SXSW. And as detailed in Flavorpill (and thank you Gawker for reminding me to post this), you can see the movie at the Pioneer Theater on E. 3rd St. in NYC from tonight (May 25th, 2005) till Tuesday (May 31st, 2005).

Siren vs. Intonation | (& Exclusive Initial Siren Lineup)

The Village Voice Siren Festival and Pitchfork's Intonation festival are both happening on July 16th.

Not only can you see Tortoise, Death From Above 1979, The Go! Team, Broken Social Scene, Four Tet, Magnolia Electric Company, AC Newman, Beans Featuring The Holy Fuck, The M’s, Head of Femur, Will Oldham, Jean Grae, The Decemberists, Les Savy Fav, The Wrens, Deerhoof, Andrew Bird, Out Hud, Xiu Xiu AND Dungen for the $22 TWO DAY PASS (less than I paid to see the Decemberists alone at Warsaw this Thursday), BUT people are also saying Thunderbirds are Now! and The Hold Steady (I really thought we were gonna get them) are also on the bill for Bitchfork's Intonation Music Festival.

The Village Voice still hasn't announced who's playing Siren (probably because there's no bands left to book), but we've managed to compile a list of confirmed/unconfirmed/rumored bands:

Spoon, Quintron, The Dears, Q and not U, VHS or Beta, Ambulance Ltd.
Possible players: The Arcade Fire & Dinosaur Jr.

Tricia Romano Interviews the Motherfucker Crew

Monday is memorial day. That means Sunday night is a Motherf*cker party in NYC. No bands on the bill for their 5th anniversary celebration, but Carlos D of Interpol is DJing (and transsexual Amanda Lepore is performing). Tricia Romano got together with Johnny T, Georgie Seville, Justine D, and Michael T for an interview. Here are some highlights...

JT: We only do Mofos on specific dates so the bands have to work around our schedule and it's hard to get everything organized a few months in advance. I'm still working on getting the Strokes. That will hopefully happen soon.

JD: The first Fischerspooner. Please, no more, no more "Emerge"! Not at my party, girl!

MT: Odd, I never thought we were going to alter the course of nightlife. You've mentioned a lot of fads—we never considered ourselves a fad. Maybe that's why we're still around.

Vegetarians are Gay, Vegans are Transsexual

Can't we all just get along?

Sloane Crosley, who couldn't hack it as a vegan and now eats fish, reminds me of what a freak I am...

"...being a vegetarian in this city is not unlike being gay. Vegetarian restaurants and options abound. I have the same number of veggie friends as I do gay friends. Because it's so common and sometimes even hip to be a vegetarian, it's become socially acceptable to poke fun of us. Being a vegan, of course, is more like the dietary equivalent of being a transsexual. Acceptance isn't quite as contagious as it should be."

Upcoming Shows & Fun Facts!

Pre-sale not so necessary. Tickets are still on sale for both of Billy Corgan's expensive shows @ Webster Hall on June 27th & 28th.

I knew Mindless Self Indulgence fans were fanatical. You can buy tickets to all three of their July shows @ Webster Hall, or just get the three day pass.

Keren Ann @ Webster Hall is not going to be a good experience. She's opening for Gomez on June 21st. Tix on sale & check previous post for more Keren Ann tour dates.

I'm loving the new Spoon album. Tickets are still on sale for their June 9th show @ Webster Hall. (or you can just wait to see them at Siren)

Feist is finally headlining Bowery Ballroom. Sadly I'm not that excited after seeing her @ Joe's Pub and then opening for British Sea Power (review & pics on my to-do pile)

You can't go wrong with Kimya Dawson @ Northsix on June 14th (at least I think so)

Just because Jay Farrar went solo doesn't mean Sun Volt broke up. They're releasing their first album in 7 years on July 12th, and to celebrate they'll play Bowery Ballroom on the same day (on sale Wed. @ noon). By the way, that's 2 days before they play South Street Seaport for free.

ANOTHER Bravery show. Jeez. this time @ Webster Hall on July 13th (tix on sale Wed. @ noon)

MC5 Kick out the Jams @ Northsix

MC5

One day before their Central Park Summerstage performance (w/ Sun Ra Arkestra & DJ Spooky) on July 30th, MC5 will stop @ Northsix in Brooklyn, NY to perform their groundbreaking album, Kick out the Jams, in its entirety. Gilby Clarke (Guns N' Roses), Lisa Kekaula (BellRays, Basement Jaxx), and Mark Arm (Mudhoney) will be playing with DKT/MC5 (they changed their name from MC5 to DKT/MC5 since they don't have all the original members I believe). Tickets are on sale.
The rest of their tour dates are in Europe (so far).

Last year MC5 released a DVD. You can stream their song "Sister Ann" @ Epitonic.

Keep reading to find out why you should know who MC5 are...

"Alongside their Detroit-area brethren the Stooges, MC5 essentially laid the foundations for the emergence of punk; deafeningly loud and uncompromisingly intense, the group's politics were ultimately as crucial as their music, their revolutionary sloganeering and anti-establishment outrage crystallizing the counterculture movement at its most volatile and threatening. Under the guidance of svengali John Sinclair (the infamous founder of the radical White Panther Party), MC5 celebrated the holy trinity of sex, drugs, and rock & roll, their incendiary live sets offering a defiantly bacchanalian counterpoint to the peace-and-love reveries of their hippie contemporaries. Although corporate censorship, label interference, and legal hassles combined to cripple the band's hopes of mainstream notoriety, both their sound and their sensibility remain seminal influences on successive generations of artists." ...continued at MP3.com

Dirty on Purpose Video Shoot, Shows & new CD

Dirty on Purpose have a new record. The CD release party is June 18th @ Mercury Lounge with Bishop Allen, The End of the World, and Chloroform. (poster)

They'll be at Southpaw on July 20th with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah & special guests for the 2nd anniversary of Vicious. (more tour dates at their website)

They're also shooting a video in NYC and they need your help (both filming and starring). Keep reading for the details (and more links)...

"We are going to shoot a music video for "All New Friends," and we need your help! The shoot is going to take place on June 5th (Location TBA in New York). We have to gather about 30 video cameras and 30 people willing to help shoot the video. We would really appreciate your help!

One interesting aspect of the video is that our director is one of the creators of "Greg the Bunny," that tv show that bombed on FOX, but is coming back to its original home at IFC this next season. So you get to meet him, and he's a really cool, friendly guy!

We'll provide beer and food for everyone willing to partake -- and it will be tons of fun! If you know people who have cameras and are willing to donate or partake in the fun, please forward this. If you want to participate in the video, please email me at info@dirtyonpurpose.com with the subject line "Music Video". Please include your name and phone number."

Their label is running a promotion where if you email iwant@luakabop.com and ask for a free song, they'll send you "a special code redeemable for a free download of the Nouvelle Vague version of the Clash's "Guns of Brixton" from the Apple Itunes store." (I have no idea if they spam you after that or what)

U2 vs Coldplay... continued | X&Y

Is Coldplay the next U2? Entertainment Magazine asks the question, "Is Coldplay the next U2?" (photo to the left)

Conservative Revolution, upset at Chris Martin's recent EMI statements, says that Coldplay Sucks.

The Guardian calls Coldplay the biggest band on the planet. (via Coolfer)

I suppose X&Y will be the blockbuster Capitol is hoping for.

Stereogum reports that the album will be streaming on MTV.com this week (not there yet). VH1 Storytellers airs June 8th.

Prefix Blog has the video from Coldplay's Saturday Night Live appearance.

U2 vs. Coldplay | NYC Small (& Big) Shows Wrap-Up

Coldplay & U2 were both in NYC last week. Both played some small shows for lucky fans and TV cameras. U2 played (and filmed at) a small club on the Lower East Side (in Manhattan), some stadiums (in NJ and Manhattan), and appeared on Good Morning America. Coldplay filmed for VH1 in Brooklyn, for AOL Music in Manhattan, and for Saturday Night Live (also in Manhattan).

U2

"U2 have taken a break from their sell-out US tour to provide backing to revered crooner LEONARD COHEN in a tiny Manhattan, New York club.

The group were filmed recording Cohen classic TOWER OF SONG at erotic cabaret lounge The Slipper Room yesterday (19MAY05) for an upcoming documentary about the torch singer"

Billboard reviews a stadium show: U2 / May 17, 2005 / East Rutherford, N.J. (Continental Airlines Arena)

And it ends up the U2 performance on Good Morning America Friday morning was filmed in Chicago. ABC News has that story.

Coldplay

I started the Coldplay story the other day (with a link to a review of the VH1 Storytellers show at BAM @ Stereogum).

The Modern Age also went to the BAM show.
And The Modern Age was at the Beacon Theatre show which was being taped for AOL Music.
Productshop was there too.

Then Coldplay played SNL last night. "...it seems they decided to play only the traditional two sets instead of the five we were led to believe we would see. Coldplay performed their instant smash-hit single, Speed Of Sound, and followed it up with Fix You" - Nothing Much

Someone already posted MP3s FROM THAT PERFORMANCE.

Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players Off Broadway

Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players"For years, the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players have brought a bit of vaudeville comedy into the art-rock community. But, this summer, the indie trio will invite music fans back into the theater world. Beginning June 22, the group will stage a summer residency at New York's off-broadway Lambs Theatre. The family band will perform at the theater on June 22-25, 28 &29 and July 6,7, 15,16, 22,23, 28 and 30. The Trachtenburg's will also play sporadic dates across the country, including performances in Charleston, SC (6/2-4), Pittsburgh, PA (6/6), Alexandria, VA (6/30) and Winnipeg, MB (7/9-10) before launching an extensive European tour this fall."

Tickets will be available at Telecharge.

They're also playing Tonic on May 26th with Corn Mo.

Maximo Park Touring | Playing Tonic twice

If you read my post about Maximo Park, you know I probably won't be at either of the shows they're playing @ Tonic in June (strange choice of venue though, and if they follow the path of the Bravery, Killers, and Kaiser Chiefs, probably the last time they'll play somewhere in NYC that small. What do u think?). Here are all their summer 2005 tour dates.

UPDATE: Stereogum posted a Maximo Park MP3

Ben Folds and Rufus Wainwright Tour | play Prospect Park

You can see all of the tour dates for the Odd Men Out tour featuring Ben Folds and Rufus Waiwright (with full bands) (and I believe Ben Lee opening) @ Rufus' tour date section.

Tickets are on sale for the August 4th show in Prospect Park (Brooklyn, NY). You can not pay and sit in the park around the bandshell, but they put up a big fence that stops you from seeing anything (That's how I "watched" Belle & Sebastian two years ago).

The rest of the concerts in Prospect Park are free.

UPDATE: Information Leafblower has a Rufus MP3 for download
