Bright Eyes on Leno
In case you missed it, Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) just played Leno dressed like a cowboy (very Jack White). He sang (bleeped curses and all) the anti-Bush "When the President Talks to God." Joey TOTC, who also alerted me to the show, pointed out that Leno is a serious republican.
Within minutes there were two comments on a three month old post...
AGAINST: "He is f*cking stupid, and I am a democrat. This guy is clearly confused about the majority of if not all of the issues. I saw him on Leno and literally laughed my ass off at how idiotic he was."
FOR: "The Best Song I have ever heard... I thought he was very clear with what he was saying... I'm a Democrat, and i think Conor captured what most democrats have been feeling for the past 5 years in a great song..."
1) Who has a photo or video I can post?
2) What do you think? (and I mostly mean about that outfit)
Download that song and more at Saddle Creek's website.

He is a piece of shit and Jay Leno is a piece of shit for putting him on national TV.

Leno's a Republican? Who says? From what I've read, he seems like a Democrat (but he happens to be friends with Arnold)

I'm not a Connor fan by any means, but it takes guts to play a song like that on national TV. He'll be blacklisted for life, but bravo... it's time to make the mainstream population think about their (dumb-assed) choice of president.

Leno is def not a republican, if anything he's a democrat, but he seems to be pretty much in the middle, maybe slightly left.

Not sure about the attire, but he captures G Dubya's arrogance. Their are two subjects in the song, God and a man who thinks he is. Touche.

Not as hot as when he wore a blood brothers hoodie on craig ferguson.

I hate to think that people think he's just about shenanegins like that. He has about five political songs out of hundreds he's written. And that was the first time he ever dressed like howdy doody.

yeah, well he happened to dress like howdy doody and sing the most overwrought politcal song possibly ever on the largest audience he will ever get. good! maybe finally he'll stop being so encouraged and learn to actually focus his talent.

I thought it was pretty awesome, to be honest. It's not the song I was hoping he would play, but it was a bold move on his part, and I respect him for it.
The outfit owned.

I was there at the taping and you could feel everyones emotions and the thick tension as he started playing this song, it was amazing.

Absolutely fantastic to see a young man and his guitar take a stand against the Bush administration on national tv. Even those who are not huge fans of Conor have to admit that he fills the void left by corporate acts who are either too ignorant or afraid to take a stand against this embarrasing excuse of a president and a man. Confronting and questioning this administration is not un-American, it's 100% patriotic and democratic.

on the outfit...
here's the deal, it was a preemptive statement - there are three types of people out there, people who love Bright Eyes, people who may have heard of them and people who have no idea who they are. The outfilt was aimed at disarming those who have heard of Bright Eyes but only know that he's supposedly the next Dylan and that he's from nebraska. so instead of letting people say, here's a hick from the sticks who likes country music - he beat them to the punch.

the outfit and performance made me, who normally adores conor, like him significantly less for a night. it was a bit over the top for me, like the time sinead tore up the pope's photo on SNL.

Leno is a Republican, this was covered a long time ago in Reader's Digest article. Yes, I read Reader's Digest-- you got a problem? Anyways, the reason you guys are soo confused is because he only cares about small government. He doesn't care about any of the morality issues that the conservative wing of the GOP wants to bring to the forefront. He is an Arnold Republican.
Posted by Daycruz | May 5, 2005 1:00 AM
yeah, it took a lot of "guts" to lash out against the president (as overwhelmingly loved as he is!)in front of an audience of adoring fans. How "controversial" and "original." I don't much care for the current president nor would I be any more satisfied if Kerry had won, but this "I've got an important message to preach!" holier than thou bullshit makes me want to puke. I actually felt twinges of embarrassment watching him. Everyone has an opinion, like assholes, and Conner made himself a big one. Just play your pop songs and shut up, PLEASE.
Posted by mk | May 5, 2005 5:22 AM
I saw that clip and was cringing with embarassment. He seems so naive, so terribly terribly naive, that he falls right into a stereotype of the wide-eyed trust fund liberal who is full of himself and terribly patronizing.
He didn't persuade any of the "mainstream," folks, to re-consider Bush. He just persuaded them that they're right never to listen to a college hippie asshole.

Sounds like a Clinton democrat to me, actually.

I was there when Dylan first spoke up..., and saw a whole generation follow..., and make a difference. It's time this generation stood up to the BS.
Anyone who really is a Christian should not be offended by the words of the song. What Christians SHOULD be offended about is an emporer who uses a "special connection to God" to justify war and bringing about a class schism (read, rich -vs- poor). But if W has fooled you, then hey, you'll believe what you've been told.

This kid moved me to sorrow and anger. Like Dylan and Guthrie, he stood against the profanity of the perverted priorities of Bush's power. It took courage, and he's a young American hero.

I thought the performance was great and I respect him for speaking out. More people need to stand up in opposition to this administration's policies and unending deception. I believe virtually nothing this president has to say and I wish people would think more critically about what they're hearing and question it. I believe that's the message the song, and I'm glad people got to hear it. You can debate the impact of Conor's statement, but I commend him for doing it.
I do wonder though if he pulled a bait and switch on NBC during the taping, or if they actually knew he was going to do that song. I would be surprised if NBC would have approved it in advance. My perception is that Leno's audience is much more Red state that Blue, so I think he accomplished his goal.

It is about time someone with a public voice told the conservatives and all the people in the midwest what we are all thinking

THANK YOU. I'm glad someone actually gets it.

I wasn't offended by his words, nor was I offended when the First Lady made a horse cock joke on TV.
And I don't think Leno is a Republican, but I do view him as part of the corporate establishment, and corporate Amerika has its marching orders not to offend George "der fuhrer" Bush in any way. So while I don't think Leno was real happy with the performance, he probably wasn't real unhappy with it either, because any publicity is good publicity.

"The morality issues that the conservative wing of the GOP wants to bring to the forefront..."
Which morality issues are you refering to Daycruz? Greed? Dishonesty? Selfishness? Love the fetus, hate the child morality?

Exactly. Bright Eyes obviously had an opinion on our (so called) president and wrote a song about it. You can decide for yourself if you like the way he shows it or if you don't; but seriously, forget about that get up he was wearing and listen to the words and situations he was describing. He really does have some insight into the backwards society we all share and was expressing his feelings on the matter- most of the insights are true I might add...
I give him praise for standing up on national television and saying 'this is what I think.' I had never listened to Bright Eyes before this performance, but after it he has earned my respect.

This is now a classic song forever to be remembered and loved by the people who have witnessed with horror G W Bush's extreme fascist policy towards the rest of the world.

First time, in a long while, that a singer with some balls sang on tv. Only the most watered down, safe, disposable crap, usually make it to Leno. The fact that the performance has illicited such overwhelming response and discussion is a enough. It worked. And he meant it.

You people need to open your eyes! How in the world do you think that it takes a big man to run his mouth. Actions speak louder than words. I don't see him doing anything that will constitute a real change. Quit complaining and do something. I would think more of Conor if he took a more proactive approach in initiating change than childish insults. Everyone is entitled to their oppinion. This is after all what makes our country great. I personally don't think that he could run our country with all that entails any better. Like I said, it takes a big man to complain about another when he shares none of the responsibilities and makes no personal sacrifices himself. Grow up.

I loved it. He's bringing back the spirit during the Viet Nam war, which is kick ass! Oberst has been my idol for some time, and thats the first of a howdy doody uniform ive seen, ut it doesn't really matter what you wear right? It was great and he sang a great song. nuff said.

And Conor himself is involved in the corporate system, he started a record company before he was a legal adult. Conor is not arrogant, pretentious, or a bullshitter. He is a musician and bussinessman who isn't afraid to stand up against a tyrant liar like bush. He pushed for everyone to vote for Kerry, but that was his opinion. I myself am an anarchist, and I take his music to heart. So getting embarrassed because a kid said what you (you know who you are) probably wouldn't say to everyone who could be watching shows he had balls.
Posted by Sean | August 11, 2005 12:31 AM
get a life, Conor rocks out. Hes got more talent than most and so what if someone sings a political song. If you can't take someone expressing their views because the contradict with yours then you have some bigger problems.
Outfit did own

Everyone can critcize. He may not be for all people, but my hat's off to him for not being afraid to take a stand.
Are any critics out there doing anything themselves to stand up?
Maybe the critics need to take lessons from Conner, even as 'naive' as he is.
