"Lam had been closing up the shop at 7:30 p.m. Friday when he emerged to see a young man sprawled faceup four paces away. The young man wore what turned out to be a white Yankees jersey, but the logo was obscured by the big bloodstain spreading across the front.

"Tall kid, good-looking kid, young kid," Lam recalled. "Moving a little bit, you know. I see him feeling pain. He's very, very hurt. Shaking."

Someone from the Bowery Ballroom was already there and was calling 911 from a cell phone. Lam had heard no gunshot and decided the young man must have been stabbed."
