The Decemberists @ Warsaw, Brooklyn, NY | Pics

The Decemberists show @ Warsaw in Brooklyn, NY last night (May 26th, 2005) was so, so good. It was their last show on this tour to support Picaresque.

From their entrance on stage in traditional Polish costumes (Warsaw is actually a Polish club & they lent them the clothes) to the Petra Haden solo number to the Colin vs Chris "Richie Sambora" Funk guitar battle to to the entire crowd sitting and shushing on Colin's command to the special surprise rendition of the Tain to close the show, the show was high energy and amazing.

The Tain! So lucky, I think he played it one other time on this tour. I wasn't there, so everyone who was is a rat. Did they play Red Right Ankle?

no Red Right Ankle. no I Was Meant for the Stage. The encore was Shiny solo and then then the Tain. Rats are cute.
They opened by blowing the shofar before playing The Infanta. I should of mentioned that.

The Tain! Bestill my heart! So awesome! We saw them in Philly a few weeks ago --- great, great show by a great, great band. Your pictures are beautiful and really capture that inimitable live-adorable-clever Decemberists essence. Did Petra sing "Wuthering Heights"?

setlist anybody?

no "bus mall," but "shiny" made the night for me.
i was there with a huge unwieldy digital SLR - i think i saw you. i managed to get 800 shots off, so i'll be editing those this week and posting them on my website soon, as well as on the decemberists messageboard.
the band has come a long way from playing the 150-capacity middle east upstairs only a year and a half ago...

Shiny too! Damn you Jenny Lewis for making me miss this show. Although, Jenny is way better to look at.

did anyone else feel like they were in the audience of an overgrown Central Park puppet show? not that that's a bad thing...
petra's backup vocals were at times too loud -- they overpowered the melody, which was a bummer. otherwise the show was pretty amazing. i've seen many a band attempt Wuthering Heights, but these kids actually pulled it off. i'd kill for one of the tambs they threw out to the crowd...
partial setlist (in no partic order):
the infanta
sporting life
we both go down together... into...
...leslie anne levine (clever)
july, july
billy liar
the chimbley sweep
16 military wives
the bagman's gambit (the best of the night)
the mariner's revenge song
the engine driver
encore:
shiny
the tain

I saw two of the shows on this tour way over here on the west coast, and they played Tain as the encore both times (so in reference to the comment above, I'm sure they played it more than one other time on the tour). They also did the Wuthering Heights cover at one of the shows that I attended, and it was great.

looks like i was standing right behind you last night at the show. your pics are all from my (near) exact vantage point /// i agree with the petra comments, her vocals were entirely too loud at points .... i hope this doesn't offend, but i am not the biggest shiny fan, so i was a little disappointed by the encore (was really hoping for as i rise or i was meant for the stage) ... but overall fantastic show ... i definitely prefer this size venue to say webster hall last year or summerstage venue ... thanks so much for all the decemberists info ... i love reading your page! have a fantastic holiday weekend!

i also thought there was a bit of a children's story hour vibe to the proceedings but again, it's not a prejorative comment just an unusual aspect of their live show. there's something sorta awesome about starting the evening with a czech beer (yay!) and then segueing into some serious audience participation, ie. kneeling on the floor of the warsaw and roaring like i'm being eaten by a whale.

yea i was there, and holy crap what an awwesome show.

Unbelievable. Unbelievable. Wonderful.... Wuthering Heights as an addition was staggering, as was the entire show.

missed this one but saw them at irving. kicking myself for that choice. shiny is one of my favorite songs and was not played at irving.
also, had my night ruined by some evil mother/daugeter combo that tried to start a fight with me and my friends for being in front of them.
moral of the story: see shows in brooklyn whenever possible!!
