Are Morningwood the VERY Special Guests?
Saints & Lovers are opening the Aloke/Pagoda show advertising VERY SPECIAL guests. A peak at at their tour dates reveals:
"06.22.05 Pianos, NYC | With Morningwood and very special guests | Click here for advance tickets"
Morningwood isn't on the bill. You do the math.
I love Morningwood, but for $10 (+ charges) more than the other Aloke/Pagoda shows, I was thinking it might be Oasis (playing MSG the same night).
Speaking of secret lineups, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah ARE the previously unannounced band at the Gothamist show.

NPR: Spinning Brand Synergy in Music Videos
"In the 1980s, music videos could propel a song to the top of the charts. But today's new bands often stand a better chance of getting exposure on The OC than on MTV. And fans seem not to be missing what once seemed destined to be a staple of television.
In recent years, record labels have been reluctant to finance a high-budget video -- unless a deal can be worked out. The process, called co-branding, is not product placement. Co-branding happens when a product and a star become inseparable."

Missy Elliot & Matt Damon @ M.I.A. | Diplo Definitely Done
More M.I.A. show celebrity sightings have surfaced. According to Manic Mess, Aziz Ansari and David Byrne weren't the only celebs in the house @ S.O.B.'s. Matt Damon was also keepin' it real.
Travis from bigstereo at the Boston show (and took pics). He was lucky enough to speak to M.I.A. outside. She told him that Missy Elliot was at one of the NYC shows, and that "Diplo isn’t with the show anymore." (I wonder if he'll be removed from the Summerstage bill)

Protect your iPod from Pickpockets & Sorcerers
We all know by now that iPod theft is a major problem (in NYC at least). It was widely reported that iPod theft on the subway is on the rise (as in more than before iPods existed). The NYPD published a pamphlet to help protect us.
For the common sense-impaired:
* STAY ALERT
* KEEP YOUR iPOD OUT OF SIGHT
* DON'T STAY BY TRAIN DOORS WHEN USING ELECTRONIC DEVICES
* BE ALERT FOR PICKPOCKETS WHEN LISTENING TO MUSIC
* CHANGE THE EARPIECE COLOR WHEN RIDING IN PUBLIC
Thanks to Emdashes for the info (via Boing Boing)
And for those traveling with their iPods through Middle Earth (no subways there - just big swords), you'll need THIS.

The Arcade Fire is so CMJ 2004
Pitchfork reported today that the Arcade Fire will play CMJ 2005 in NYC on September 14th. Their CMJ 2004 show at Mercury Lounge was the performance that (supposedly) got everyone talking - confirmation that their 9.7 was in fact deserved. (Was it?)
The Pitchfork story also mentions a bunch of stuff about singles and videos and reissues and stuff (though unfortunately no mention of a Siren Festival performance).

CMJ Brooklyn Battle of the Bands Recap

On Sunday (June 5th, 2005) I went to the CMJ Battle of the Bands at Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, but only stayed for the first two competing bands. Luckily my onsite correspondent had an update waiting for me when I returned home later that evening (that I took 5 days to post)...
"Somehow I stuck it out till the end... the winner was Jessie Diamond and the Thousand, with Faith and Paul Brill as runner-ups. Jessie was the tall blonde in the halter top and short shorts who was enthusiastically dancing to all the other sets. No doubt earned some points with the judges for that, at least the Vice dude. She could sing pretty great, though, too. But the whistler was a total letdown. We thought he'd do like, bird calls and country fair shit, but instead he just whistled along to karaoke tracks of "Sir Duke" and "Summertime" - he even stopped whistling and just SANG for a bit of Summertime!"
The New York Sun has more coverage of this event.
And according to Gawker, Jennifer Connelly (who lives in the neighborhood) was there.

Moby opens a second Teany Cafe

It was Gawker that actually brought this to my attention...
"I followed Billy Joel and his wife down Prince Street for a bit on Saturday 6/4. I assumed that he was going to show her where Mr. Caccitore's down on Sullivan Street once was, but instead he went into the new teany."
Now Moby at the bar is a friend of mine. OK, I won't go there.

Eleanor Friedberger of the Fiery Furnaces (who played in the same venue in April) was there with her boyfriend Alex Kapranos from Franz Ferdinand (who played there in June 2004). So was Daniel Kessler from Interpol (don't think they ever played there).

Aziz Ansari sees M.I.A. | M.I.A. doesn't see Aziz
The M.I.A. show was apparently packed with celebrities last night. In addition to David Byrne (who was deciding if M.I.A. should perform or not), NYC comedian Aziz Ansari was also in the house.
He writes...
"At one point in the show, I go to use the bathroom. During this part of the show, M.I.A. tells her DJ to stop the current track mid-song. Bewildered, the DJ does. M.I.A. takes the mic and says, "Is comedian Aziz Ansari here tonight?" Someone in the crowd yells, "Who is that?" M.I.A. responds, "I'm talking about Aziz Ansari, the guy that hosts Crash Test, the new weekly standup show at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, Mondays at 11.""
Read the rest of his review at his site.
Aziz also likes Nine Inch Nails and Beck.

These photos from M.I.A.'s show at S.O.B.'s in NYC on Tuesday, June 7th, 2005.

A list of stuff about this show:
1. Diplo was not the DJ. He was also playing Rothko the same night, though I would be surprised if he cancelled one to do the other. MIA said something like, "My DJ Diplo is missing."
2. The DJ was DJ Marlboro?
3. The backup/second singer is key. She's really good.
4. The back to back combination of Bucky Done Gone and Galang was one of my best concert experiences of the year.
5. David Byrne was there.

Updated 2005 Siren Festival Line-up
The Village Voice announced three more acts for the Siren Festival: Ambulance Ltd (we already knew), Morningwood, and Diamond Nights. They still haven't announced Quintron and Miss Pussycat. Add those four to the other confirmed acts: Spoon, Mates of State, Brendan Benson, Dungen, VHS or Beta, Q and not U, and the Dears. That's eleven. Last year there were 14, so we have 3 more to go.
note: Dinosaur Jr is NOT playing, but there's still a chance for the Arcade Fire.

Feist @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC | Pics | Tour Dates

Feist opened for British Sea Power @ Bowery Ballroom on Saturday May 14th, 2005. I wasn't as impressed with her performance as I was at Joe's Pub. She didn't have a band, and I don't like the way she constantly tells the audience they suck (not in those words exactly). On the other hand, some people I talked to really liked her AND her attitude. I'm also probably guilty of over-listening to her album (thus making her songs less exciting @ Bowery), and maybe I was tired (though I still loved the energetic British Sea Power who came on after her).
She's back as a headliner at the same venue on June 25th after opening some shows for (the now signed to a major label) Rilo Kiley. I'll definitely give her another chance (assuming she'll have a band next time too). All 2005 tour dates below.

Critical Condition | Art & Music Critics & Blogs
"Once almighty arbiters of American taste, critics find their power at ebb tide. Is it a dark time for the arts, or the dawn of a new age?" The LA Times explores that question in "Critical condition." (via sg)
Selected quotes...
"Alex Ross straddles this divide in an unusual way: The New Yorker's classical music critic, Ross also runs a blog called the Rest Is Noise. He doesn't think websites are cutting into the readership of papers and magazines; rather, they appeal to "people who devour media in any form — they're just addicted to information."
And he started his site not as a path off the sinking ship of print but because he wanted to give classical music the presence on the Net that rock criticism has with fan chat rooms. Classical musicians, such as Emanuel Ax and Hilary Hahn, have blogs."
----
"Still, the Net has made so much available that it's undercut one of the critic's crucial roles: turning audiences on to something obscure or unknown. These days, for example, if you purchase a record by Interpol on a consumer website, you'll be told that their heroes are Joy Division and the Velvet Underground. It's the kind of thing that would have been done only by a rock critic a decade ago."
And continued from yesterday...
What did Largehearted Boy have to say in response to his mention in the NY Times?
"I disagree, I believe every music blog has a degree of influence..."

NY Times: Little-Known Bands Get Lift Through Word-of-Blog
Selected quotes from today's New York Times article titled "Little-Known Bands Get Lift Through Word-of-Blog." (via Coolfer)
----
"This is how the Internet was supposed to help music: last year, J. P. Connolly, a science teacher in Brooklyn, heard a song by one of his students, a rail-thin 15-year-old named Oliver Ignatius, who is the lead singer for a band called the Hysterics. Mr. Connolly, who had bonded with his student over independent music, loved Mr. Ignatius's song and posted it on Music for Robots, an influential blog he helps run."
----
"And now Mr. Connolly and his Music for Robots peers are attempting a coup of their own. The blog recently released a compilation CD, Music for Robots Vol. 1, which features 19 unsigned and independent-label bands, including the Hysterics."
----
"Only a handful of music blogs, with names like Fluxblog, Stereogum and Largehearted Boy, have any influence, but even those still have a long way to go to fundamentally alter the landscape of the music industry."
----
"The Decemberists, a popular independent band from Portland, Ore., recently complained that much of its new album had been posted on blogs before the album was released, and implored bloggers to take the songs down."
----
"Music for Robots has the credibility of a very hip record store," says Glenn Peoples, who runs a popular music blog called Coolfer. Good music blogs, he said, let consumers get the word out about bands that are legitimately good."
----
"For labels, blogs can be fertile testing grounds. Adam Shore, label manager at Vice Records, said he fell in love with the Norwegian pop star Annie, who was at the time unknown in the United States, but was skittish about putting out her album until he saw the positive word of mouth it was receiving on blogs, as well as on the online music magazine Pitchfork."
----
"But the most significant force to emerge for unknown bands, in fact, has nothing to do with the Internet. Starbucks, the coffee retailer, has begun selling CD's in its stores, and the experiment has proved a success."
----

Jay-Z <3 The Killers, Louis XIV, and The Bravery

Last Night's Party's pictures of The Killers/Louis XIV show at Summerstage and the afterparty at Misshapes reminded me of Jay-Z's appearance at Bowery Ballroom in April to see the Bravery.

Shout Out Louds | Howl Howl Gaff Gaff
The "special guest" at the Coral (who will "never be like Franz Ferdinand") show at Bowery Ballroom on June 9th is Shout Out Louds. They're also opening for the Dears two days later at the same venue.
I just got their new/reissued CD today. It's called Howl Howl Gaff Gaff, and I haven't decided how much I like it yet. My opinion goes up and down, so I'll keep listening.
Download two MP3s at Central Village.
Pitchfork reviewed the original in 2003 and said it was worth a 6.9.

Franz Ferdinand's Secret Messages | In NYC Recording
"Franz Ferdinand have admitted their music contains secret messages embedded within their songs.
The band confessed that like on many rock records, they placed a hidden phrase within their debut album, and plan to do it again on the follow-up."
"Scottish rock act Franz Ferdinand is in New York mixing its as-yet-untitled sophomore album with engineer Rich Costey. "It should be out in September," lead singer Alex Kapranos told Billboard.com before Kraftwerk's sold-out performance last night (June 1) at Hammerstein Ballroom. "It's definitely going to be better than the first album.""

The Voice Reviews Annie Anniemal
"Praise for Annie from the blogosphere (surely some of these people are shills) has been intemperate—likewise from British record reviewers, who are paid by the hyperbolic adjective. But let's not punish Annie for being overrated. An overrated good record is still a good record, and "Chewing Gum" may well have been last year's 31st best single."

N.Y. Station (WCBS) Suddenly Dumps Oldies Format
"It's the day the music died. WCBS-FM, the top oldies station in the nation for more than three decades, stunned its legion of listeners by abruptly switching formats this weekend. Goodbye, Buddy Holly and the Beach Boys. Hello, Duran Duran and Jet."
