Brooks featuring Antony on Vocals | MP3
"Back when Brooks — Andrew James Brooks — bedded down with Antony and cut his cut "A Little Bit of Time," the enthusiasm for such was probably limited to homo-masochists, bondage enthusiasts, and Nurse With Wound devotees, an array of fans who're likely one and the same. Yet, with the star of Saint Antony rising, having him on wax is like catching him on the wax, rising into the night sky. And, so, it'd be no surprise if even the venerable Magic & Accident empire — presided over by our hero Herbert — took Brooks back to the production line and restickered this here compact disc with a "featuring Antony of Antony & The Johnsons" proclamation stuck on front." -neumu

Untold Story of Mondo Kim's Raid
"...All the other employees were released from there [sic] cells before me, i had a panic attack that was prompted by all this stress, not eating (jail is not really vegan friendly)..."
"...They have all our customers' files, and they could be doing something with that for all we know. Patriot Act stuff. You know, all the people who rent porno here and wanna run for office, stuff like that..."
"...One employee, speaking under conditions of anonymity, believes Sony-Columbia record executives were among the dozen or so police officers who executed the raid..."
"...And they left grease all over the floor from their pizza..."

Bonnaroo Downloads from LHB | M. Ward w/ Jenny Lewis
Largehearted Boy is compiling a list of live recordings available for download from Bonnarroo. I'm particularly interested in M. Ward's set featuring Jenny Lewis from Rilo Kiley on two songs (she also lent vocals to his latest album). They're all lossless FLAC format. If anyone finds the MP3s, let me know (sorry purists).
M. Ward is playing the NYC River to River Festival and the Newport Folk Festival this summer.

DJ LADY MISS KIER @ LUKE & LEROY

On Friday June 3rd I stopped by Luke & Leroy (home of Misshapes) to check out a DJ set by Lady Miss Kier (Dee-Lite). Once upon a time I saw Dee-Lite play at City Gardens in Trenton, NJ, and many years ago I used to see her out in NYC all the time (way more than I now see David Byrne). It's been a while. Anyway, I can't tell you if she was good DJ or not. I can't remember, but I think I was dancing (and I think it was her DJing at the time).
You can see her again this Thursday, June 23rd, 2005, @ Larry Tee's Distortion Disko "gay pride spectacular" party at Duvet (21st between 5th & 6th - NYC). We're going to dance. We're going to dance. And have some fun.

Fred Armisen: Joanna Newsom. I'm blown away by her CD. I saw her once in New York. If the festival was just her, I would still go. I think she's one of the greatest ever. Her lyrics, they're incredible. And also to watch someone play the harp that well is, um, it makes you happy to be alive.

Bloc Party was hot, Webster hall was not, NYC | Pics

Despite all the Webster Hall controversy (mostly the temperature) yesterday, Wednesday (June 15th, 2005) night's show reconfirmed why I love Bloc Party so much. I left Webster Hall drenched in sweat, but NOT from the temperature inside the club; From dancing. I was very comfortable in the club (note: the cold front that came to NYC on Wednesday obviously helped).

They only have one full length album, yet I feel like I watched a band playing all their hits. Every song is as exciting as the next. I've been listening to "Silent Alarm" for almost seven months, and I still love it. This was the sixth time I saw them live (I'm trying to break Cobra Snake's record), and I'd probably rank it as the second best. Roxy ruled.

Highlights from the show in list format:
* Kele (singer) made a point to tell the crowd they were better than the night before (again)
* From where I was standing, the crowd was good
* They said they'd be back in September (Roseland? Hammerstein?)
* They kicked major ass
* They played TWO encores (4 songs, then 2 songs). Half the crowd was gone for the second one.
* They played two new songs. They were good.
* Kele & the Matt (drummer) both stage dove.
* Fireworks or something went off over the drums during the encore
* Kele dedicated a song to a singer of another band in attendance who helped them get started (hint: Franz Ferdinand...as also seen at Spoon in the same venue)

Coolfer liked the show too.

New York to sign bill allowing ticket scalping
"ALBANY, N.Y. -- A revised bill legalizing limited ticket scalping for venues with 6,000 seats or more will be signed into law by Gov. George Pataki, the governor's office said Wednesday.
An earlier version of the bill passed by the state Legislature this month would have allowed scalpers to sell tickets without price restrictions. Supporters said that would lead to lower prices as sellers competed for business and more tickets became available."

Nublu 3rd Anniversary Party w/ Brazilian Girls
"Nublu isn't just the name of the bar--it's also the name of owner Ilhan Ersahin's record label. You'll often find him jamming here with his bands Wax Poetic and Lovetrio. Many of the DJs are also his friends, so there's an informal vibe that, coupled with the smooth electronic and world music, oozes mellowness." - Citysearch
Brazilian Girls got their start at Nublu. You'll know them as the band that made one of Coolfer's favorite albums of the year, who headlined Irving Plaza on June 1st, and who are playing Summerstage on July 17th. Nick Harcourt from KCRW called them "one of the most exciting discoveries of the year."
Naturally, Brazilian Girls want to help the people that got them started celebrate their third anniversary:
Mon June 20th: butch morris conducts the nublu orchestra
Tue June 21st: brazilian girls with kudu
Wed June 22nd: wax poetic with elodie o
Thu June 23rd: mauro refosco's forro in the dark with bato's gypsy boogie
Fri June 24th: love trio in dub feat. u-roy
Sat June 25th: our theory feat. erik truffaz with i led three lives
Sun June 26th: real live show feat. bato with idub

Mike Neuman's Bloc Party Review | Dear Webster Hall
Before you read Manhattan carnivore Mike Neuman's disgruntled review of last night's Bloc Party show at Webster Hall (June 14th, 2005), keep in mind that some people do like the venue (see comments).
Photo courtesy of hseikaly who said, "imagine hot, humid, stagnant air over a large mass of people and you can't move. it was lovely."
Dear Webster Hall,
You suck. Please stop hosting shows of good bands, because you are going to ruin their live-show reputation. Last night at Webster Hall was the last straw.
I am never going there again! I walked in about 25 minutes before Bloc Party came on. And about 20 minutes before Bloc Party went on... I was drenched. It is so fucking hot inside of Webster Hall, that it made Coachella 2004 look like... some much colder... concert.
Bloc Party finally came on... and you couldn't hear anything except for drums. All I heard was drums for the first 3 songs. Webster Hall is known for it's terrible sound, but this was simply incredible. How was it that no wise-ass audience members were screaming at the sound guys and guitar techs? Oh I know why... because I think only 25% of the audience knew who the fucking band was!
Now this I can't blame on Webster Hall. The crowd was fucking terrible last night. Terrible. There was no dancing, no movement at all. The band obviously knew it, and were making comments about it throughout the show. Now I LOVE to judge people I don't know, but I usually don't do it on a public forum. Usually I just save it for my friends. But most of the kids at last night's show look like they would've been much more comfortable at a Hoobastank concert. "But why do you care what the audience is like?" Because the audience sucks, and then it affects the band, and the band doesn't play as well. It always happen. If the crowd sucks, the band is going to suck.
Ok, ok. Bloc Party certainly did not suck last night. They certainly played well, and it truly wasn't their fault that I didn't enjoy the show. It was the venue and crowd that sucked. I'm sure if last night's exact show was transported to say... Bowery Ballroom, with a different crowd, then it would've been a lot better.
Also, mark my words. One day that floor of Webster Hall is going to fucking collapse and kill a lot of people. It was like standing on a trampoline last night. That Israeli wedding-hall floor collapse video from a few years ago kept replaying in my mind during the show.
So, Webster Hall, stick with doing what you're good at. Hosting "Wet Willie" contests.
Sincerely,
Mike Neuman
---------
Editor's Note: Despite his letter, Mike Neuman will be attending Bloc Party at Webster Hall AGAIN tonight.

Life of Agony @ CBGB, NYC | Pics

The first time I saw Life of Agony (LOA), they were opening for Type O Negative at (the now closed) Lamour in Brooklyn approximately 13 years ago. Type O Negative weren't "goth" yet. Life of Agony only had a demo out (and I guess Sal was drumming for both bands).

They still have as much, if not more, energy as they did over a decade ago. They're aging better than me. Long story short, seeing LOA play (the soon to close) CBGB last night (June 14th, 2005) was awesome - guaranteed to make my list of top ten shows this year.

(It would of been more exciting had it not been the sixth time I saw them since they reunited in 2003 - Irving, Irving, Birch Hill, Birch Hill, Birch Hill, Starland Ballroom).

The show coincided with the release of, Broken Valley (stream it), their new album on Epic Records. It was also bassist Alan Roberts' wedding anniversary.

Johnny Kelly of Type O Negative & Danzig (and Sal's former drum tech) was at the show AND worked as Sal's drum tech. (must humble guy ever). Regulars like the girl from FUSE TV, Keith's uncle, Sal's wife, other relatives, and Rob Mastrianni from Next Tribe (Keith's solo guitarist) were also in attendance.

* Nellie "Queen of Benefits" McKay has two benefit shows coming up.
1. The first one (which was yesterday, so I guess it's not coming up) costs between $300 & $20,000 (not bad) a ticket, includes performances by the cast of Hurlyburly & Avenue Q, some dancing, and singing by John Cullum.
2. The second one is tomorrow (June 15th). It's at the CUNY Graduate Center and only costs $15.
More Info at Nellie's site

* "Jason Loewenstein (of Sebadoh), Northern State, Supagroup, and DJs Eugene Hutz (of Gogol Bordello), Fancy (of Fannypack), and Tommie Sunshine to perform at Village Voice Union Strike Fund Benefit!"
* Regina Spektor is playing a benefit show too.

The Death of the Killers? Bloc Party Next? | Bjork
Pauline Millard from The Simon writes...
"Any music fan worth their salt can remember June 2004 when The Killers' album, Hot Fuss, was all the rage, at least it was south of 14th Street. Even a year later I can still put it on and just let it rip, no skipping songs or turning it off after the fifth track. I remember going to their show at the Bowery Ballroom on August 16th..."
"...That's why I get mad when I hear The Killers' played at yuppie watering holes with names like, "The Mad River Grille" and on Top 40 radio stations like Z-100, which manages to ruin every great song."
"...Naturally someone is going to pipe up and tell me not to be such a whiner, that the point of music, and what these artists hope to achieve, is to reach the masses..."
"...I shrugged, changed into my flat shoes and headed home, where I turned on my Bloc Party CD. Surely it was safe to listen to them, at least for another year."

Life of Agony, new album streams, & stuff
Quick LOA history lesson: Life of Agony (from Brooklyn) made some of the best hardcore/rock/heavy albums ever (in my opinion of course). Their singer Keith Caputo has an awesome voice. They broke up, did separate things including a solo career by Keith, and then reunited for two shows at Irving Plaza in 2003. June 2005: They're playing three special small shows in this area (CBGB tonight!) to celebrate the release of their new album (their first new material in a zillion years). Their new album has a major label K*Rocky (NY rock radio station) nu-metal overproduced sort of sound now which sux, but I can't help but still be happy to have LOA again.
Vampire Magazine says...
"It takes some time to fully grasp the beauty of "Broken Valley", but once you have grasped it, this gem keeps on growing and growing. "Broken Valley" is hard on its way to become my second favourite Life of Agony record, with, naturally, "River Runs Red" on number one."
Stream the new Life of Agony album (Broken Valley) at AOL Music where you can also stream albums by:
* Foo Fighters
* Funeral for a Friend
* Indigo Girls
* Kraftwerk (pitchfork review)
* David Meade
* Lizz Wright (if you like her, she's playing free in NYC tonight)
* Fat Joe

Bridget Jones' Diarrhea
God I hate that name... Central Village pointed me to this Loose Record post by Good Times Roll:
"Wait, there was a point here… Oh yes, the point is, there is a special secret band (a la The Ligers) playing the Mercury Lounge this July. They are doing a residency, but only one show is currently up on their web calendar, (this was my understanding, but don't sleep on these tickets, because I could be wrong). Anyway, I'm not going to 'cut' to the chase, but the hint is they are Gay, Danceable and Super Fun. They can play venues 10 times the size of the Mercury Lounge. If you can't figure it out from there then you need a shot in your nonexistent nuts. I can lead you to whiskey, but you have to drink it. They are playing under the moniker Bridgette Jones' Diarrhea. Tickets are available on Ticketweb, but hustle up because they will sell out soon. This is a perfect reason to break a summer sweat."
ALREADY SOLD OUT, but as Central Village suggests, try the box office.
(and note: all links above added by me, and I actually do not know who the secret band is...THOUGH I HOPE I'M RIGHT)

Thunderbirds Are Now! Tour Diary
"We soon hopped in the van and navigated our way through the congested streets of Brooklyn, over the Williamsburg Bridge, and eventually into the posh Manhattan quarters that house New York's famous Knitting Factory, where we were to perform on the smallest of the venue's three floors, the Old Office. We had a photo shoot scheduled with Sup Magazine, so we met up with the photographer for a whirlwind of a session. Photographer Jesse was either totally obliterated when he showed up, or just naturally clumsy and boisterous, but he was dressed in a Hawaiian shirt, so we were totally down with him from the start."

Roger Waters & Pink Floyd Reunite | Live 8
"LONDON -- Pink Floyd's classic lineup will play at July's London Live 8 concert, band members' first performance together in more than 20 years, event organizers said Sunday.
Guitarist David Gilmour, drummer Nick Mason, bassist Roger Waters and keyboard player Richard Wright have not performed on stage together since Waters split after a band spat in the 1980s."

Regina Spektor playing Benefit @ Tonic
In case you missed her recent show at Radio City Music Hall, or her amazing show at Bowery Ballroom before that (my camera was broken, and I never finished writing my review. It was really, really good), or even if you were at those shows (no clue why I'm wording it like this), you can see Regina Spektor at Tonic on July 27th. It's a benefit show for PAX. What's PAX? I have no clue, but it's a small venue like she used to play before she became a major label big shot. She deserves it of course. Go if you can afford it.
Tickets are $25 and on sale.

An Audio Guide to Emo | MP3s
"If someone has sent you the link to this page, then it's most likely because you are one of the many netizens who doesn't know what emo is and more importantly, thinks they do. The emo people are one of the most discriminated against online, causing us to retreat to our live journals and myspace in fear."

Keren Ann @ Southpaw (6/2005), Brooklyn, NY | Pics

Keren Ann played another excellent show at Southpaw in Brooklyn, NY on Thursday June 9th, 2005. This time it was just her, her guitar, a guitarist, and her keyboardist. If you haven't heard her yet, stream a few songs off her latest album.
Today (June 12th) she's at Bonnaroo. Check her site for more tour dates including an appearance on Morning Becomes Eclectic June 15th, Bowery Ballroom on July 20th, and CBS Saturday Early show on July 23rd. The show she was supposed to play with Gomez at Webster Hall (which was originally going to be at Beacon Theatre) was cancelled (good. wrong venue for her. especially as an opener).
Dayna Kurtz is opening the Bowery show. Dayna has been opening for and performing with Tarantula, as well as opening for Antony & The Johnsons on some recent tour dates. Listen to Dayna @ NPR.
