Willie Nelson @ Yogi Berra Stadium, NJ | Pics

Willie Nelson @ Yogi Berra Stadium

Yesterday (Friday, June 24th, 2005) I took a road trip to NJ which included a show by Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan @ Yogi Berra Stadium @ Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ.

Willie opened for Bob at the packed stadium. I was on the ground. The bleachers were full too. Here are the photos of Willie.

"These musicians have been with Willie a long time, and along with his two sons, one on drums & one on electric guitar, this is TRULY a family band on the road." - from a review of the June 4th show.

You Can't Even Get a NY Band Name Right

The other day I accidentally wrote "Radio 1" was playing with Ted Leo instead of "Radio 4." (both BBC radio stations).

This post is dedicated to the anonymous commenter who wrote, "Are you even going to correct your typo in the entry? That's just lame that you can't even get a NY band name right."

Fixed.

M.I.A. vs. Missy Elliot | The Cookbook

MIAMissy

"M.I.A.'s poppin' up all over the place. She's rumored to be on Kanye's upcoming Late Registration, but while we're waiting for that album to be finished, we've got news that's equally, if not more, exciting: M.I.A. has a guest spot on the last track of the new Missy Elliott joint, The Cookbook. The cut, "Bad Man", also features Vybz Cartel and was produced by Missy herself." - Pitchfork

* I previously reported that Missy was at one of M.I.A.'s recent shows in NYC (M.I.A. supposedly acted surprised)
* Coolfer points out that an iTunes pre-order of the album comes with a free video!
* According to MP3.com, M.I.A is similar to Missy Elliot, Neneh Cherry, and Ms. Dynamite.
* Missy admits being high at a press conference.
* Tommy Lee (probably high) in new Missy video
* M.I.A. put out one of my favorite albums this year.

Foie Gras is for the Uninformed (aka Gothamist)

I'm not much of an activist, but Foie Gras is disgusting, uber-cruel, & pointless, and Gothamist writing something positive about it ("our favorite foie gras dish in the city was blah blah blah") has me wondering if I'll submit a post next week. On the other hand, I know first hand that Gothamist doesn't really edit much (if any... which I think is a good thing) of it's contributor's content (therefore making the post the sole responsibility of it's author...even if it does have the standard Gothamist "we" lingo), and I believe in free speech (and my ability to trackback their post with this response), and I know that some people are just uninformed about the reality that is foie gras. Everyone makes mistakes.

Pot Because the government has nothing better to do...

"SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Federal drug agents launched a crackdown on medical marijuana providers in California Wednesday, raiding more than 20 dispensaries and charging two people"

In NYC, the police are thinking of shifting their emphasis from potheads to "major busts." "The Narcotics Division has made 4,305 marijuana arrests through June 19." Gothamist reports.

NORML's mission is to move public opinion sufficiently to achieve the repeal of marijuana prohibition so that the responsible use of cannabis by adults is no longer subject to penalty.

Stylus gave Kelly Osbourne an A-

-----

"I'm not always sure where my music choices come from, nor can I understand why I'm so adamant to analyze and defend them. Many music enthusiasts get downright ugly if you even hint at showing disregard for something they love, yet I guess that's just a distinct trait of those who take their music seriously."

Kelly Osbourne | Sleeping in the Nothing

Kelly Osbourne "So who cares if music snobs call her a fraud? When the new wave is this hot, there's always room at the disco for another high-drama diva overcoming her demons" - The Village Voice

Stylus declares "Sleeping in the Nothing" the CD of the week with an A- rating...
"Having already wrenched pathos and heart-stopping pop-rock product out of Pink, Courtney Love, Christina Aguilera and Gwen Stefani, Perry’s finally found her perfect combination of blank slate and 48-font tabloid headline in metal’s faithless, famous-for-being-famous princess."

"Regardless of your thoughts on the young Osbourne, this will be on several "guilty pleasures" lists come year-end." - liveDaily

Press Gazette interviews Conor Michaels of NME

NME "Barely three years after taking the helm at New Musical Express, editor Conor McNicholas has given the title a more tabloid feel and rejuvenated its readership. But, he tells Alyson Fixter, it hasn't been an easy ride

"I'VE NEVER been called a twat so many times in my life," says Conor McNicholas. "I've been painted as this bogeyman figure. But there's no grand conspiracy, there's nothing to hide."

These don't sound like the words of a man who's just won the industry's Editor of the Year award and been credited with turning around the fortunes of 53-year-old music weekly New Musical Express. But for the editor of a legendary music magazine like NME, there's a far more demanding, critical and, well, emotional audience to please than his fellow hacks."

New Pornographers -Neko +Kathryn, this tour

"Vancouver-based indie rockers the New Pornographers will release their third album, Twin Cinema, on August 23rd. Fans will get a taste of new tunes, and a reworked lineup, on a mini-tour this month. While the band enjoys a large arsenal of players -- sometimes upwards of eight -- the newest member has a familial connection: Kathryn Calder, who sings and plays piano, is also frontman A.C. Newman's niece.

"Neko [Case] can't make the June shows, so Kathryn's going to be the girl," Newman says. "So we're going to be kind of like the Fiery Furnaces -- the relatives band [laughs].""

Lyndsay Lohan dating singer of Elefant?

From Page 6...

"June 21, 2005 -- SHE'S already dated bubble-gum popster Aaron Carter, and now it looks like Lindsay Lohan has been hooking up with a bona fide rocker. Our snitches say the 18-year-old superstar has been discreetly dating Diego Garcia, hunky lead singer of local buzz band Elefant. Garcia, an Argentinian-born Brown grad, is known for his onstage lothario act. While opening for stellastarr* at the Bowery Ballroom a while back, he told the sold-out crowd, "I have now impregnated each and every one of you.""

Siren Festival Lineup updated again

Two more acts announced for Siren:
1) Be Your Own Pet
2) Nine Black Alps

Nine Black Alps are from the UK. Here's their NME page
Be Your Own Pet's NME page is not as populated.

Be Your Own Pet is a Rolling Stone artist to watch
And Splendid says that "Be Your Own Pet are so badass and so young that it wouldn't be a surprise if a group of aging rockers paid decent money to have them silenced, as any band that's this good at this age makes everyone else in the scene look bad."

The Village Voice says that more Siren acts will be announced. They still haven't announced Quintron. Quintron + Nine Black Alps + Be Your Own Pet + everyone else they already announced = 13 acts so far. Probably one more we don't know about.

COINCEDENTALLY on the day his new solo album is released (today), Billy Corgan put full page ads in Chicago newspapers announcing his plans to reform Smashing Pumpkins.

It's officially time to start picking on Billy Corgan who recently told Pitchfork, "For someone who's had the level of success I've had, there's been very little critical review of my work, which is pretty fascinating."

CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH @ KNITTING FACTORY
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah @ Movable Hype 3

* Movable Hype lived up to the Hype (though perhaps the Fame did not)
* David Bowie was there (in the balcony) to see Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (CYHSY) (as confirmed by Jen before she went to sleep)
* A lot of people were in attendance to see CYHSY (including members of The Cloud Room). Knitting Factory was almost at capacity.
* A lot of those people were complaining after CYHSY played...complaining they didn't play long enough.
* A bunch of people left after CYHSY. They missed an awesome performance by Ghostland Observatory from Austin, TX. To quote Dr Jimmy, "Ghostland Observatory was FUCKING AMAZING!!!!"
* You have two more chances to see Ghostland in NYC this week (including @ The Delancey with DJ Nora). The guy can really sing, and they rock phat beats (and tight white pants) (Central Village has MP3s).
* Do you have this album yet?????????

Annie to work with Scissor Sisters?

Annie + Scissor Sisters = True Love

Pitchfork: Have you had time to write new material for the next record?

Annie: I already started writing, like six tracks that I think that are gonna be something. I haven't been in the studio but I've been writing melodies. I hope that I can go into the studio in early August. I was thinking I maybe work with the Scissor Sisters on one track. I'm not sure, I'm open to lots of things. And I think this Dean McWho--

Pitchfork: Juan Maclean?

Annie: Yeah! He was maybe asking if I can do something. That would be great!

This Week's NYC Shows Posted

Tonight is Movable Hype. I love Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's new album. What genius booked Feist the same night as New Pornographers, Sadies, and Stars' free show in Prospect Park? Gonna have to miss Mary Timony too. Emiliana Torrini is back in town. That stuff and more in this week's music picks posted at Gothamist (and before noon too!).

White Stripes playing Coney Island (not Siren) w/ The Shins

According to the White Stripes' official website, they're playing Keyspan Park in Coney Island (Brooklyn, NY) on Saturday September 24th with Brendan Benson & The Shins (via Central Village). What the website doesn't say is that they're ALSO playing September 25th at the same venue. Tickets not on sale yet.

Pitchfork's Tens & Zeroes

Whatevs did the research and found 30 perfect tens and 9 zeroes at Pitchfork. (via OneLouder)

You might hate Pitchfork, but their ratings have real life effects...
"Josh Rosenfeld, co-owner of Seattle-based Barsuk Records, says one Texas record store initially refused to stock one of his releases, Travis Morrison's 2004 release Travistan," because it received a 0.0 review from Pitchfork."
(maybe that's why you hate them)

Jen says that Pitchfork also gave Monday night's Gothamist Movable Hype show featuring Clap Your Hands Say Yeah a 10. I would agree with that rating (and not just because they don't pay me to work there).

Rogue Wave @ Bowery Ballroom

I watched Rogue Wave play to a half-full Bowery Ballroom on Friday night June 17th, 2005. I heard they were good, but I was kind of bored. This review of their Mercury Lounge show matches my sentiments almost exactly (including leaving before they finished)
