Bloc Party was hot, Webster hall was not, NYC | Pics

Despite all the Webster Hall controversy (mostly the temperature) yesterday, Wednesday (June 15th, 2005) night's show reconfirmed why I love Bloc Party so much. I left Webster Hall drenched in sweat, but NOT from the temperature inside the club; From dancing. I was very comfortable in the club (note: the cold front that came to NYC on Wednesday obviously helped).

They only have one full length album, yet I feel like I watched a band playing all their hits. Every song is as exciting as the next. I've been listening to "Silent Alarm" for almost seven months, and I still love it. This was the sixth time I saw them live (I'm trying to break Cobra Snake's record), and I'd probably rank it as the second best. Roxy ruled.

Highlights from the show in list format:
* Kele (singer) made a point to tell the crowd they were better than the night before (again)
* From where I was standing, the crowd was good
* They said they'd be back in September (Roseland? Hammerstein?)
* They kicked major ass
* They played TWO encores (4 songs, then 2 songs). Half the crowd was gone for the second one.
* They played two new songs. They were good.
* Kele & the Matt (drummer) both stage dove.
* Fireworks or something went off over the drums during the encore
* Kele dedicated a song to a singer of another band in attendance who helped them get started (hint: Franz Ferdinand...as also seen at Spoon in the same venue)

thank you so much for emphasizing how amazing the show was instead of complaining about the heat, or the sound or the crowd or (fill in generic hipster gripe here).

The thing that looked like fireworks coming from behind the drums (that you caught in the third picture) was a mouthful of water that drummer Matt had spit out just as that song kicked back in. He had taken the drink of water during the breakdown that preceded that moment - looked like he was going for quite the rock and roll effect when he did it.

I though that the Engineers were also quite entertaining last night...

you always get such wonderful pictures. kudos.
i'm surprised you thought the show was so good though. . .i thought kele's voice sounded pretty shot, although it might have been the soundsystem.

where were you standing? I was right up front.

you do always get great pics. i always show up late and then am relegated to being a few rows farther back than i'd like to be. the band definitely put on a show last night. two encores, stage dives made for a fun night.

Oddly enough, it really depended on where you were standing. I was in the back for most of the show and it everything sounded great. Even the vocals were strong. After the lights came on I went up front to buy a beer from the guy at the front of the stage. When they came back out, i was up front and the vocals were extremely low. It must have been how the room was mixed.

Xander - Alfred? Think my gf and I talked to you and your gf at a recent bowery show...

Definitely thought the vocals were low, too. But everyone (band AND crowd) was having so much fun it's really hard to be critical. I was worried after hearing about Tuesday's show, but was blown away by the crowd's reaction, and the band's reaction to that reaction.
