Clap Your Hands Say Yeah sound like _____
Everyone talks about who Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (CYHSY) sound like (most popular comparison = the Talking Heads). I care more about liking their music than who they sound like, BUT interestingly (to me) while at the Bob Dylan concert on Friday (with CYHSY fresh in my head) I was thinking, "wow, I never realized how much Dylan there is in CYHSY." So while catching up on Pitchfork news today I thought it was interesting to see this:
"Ounsworth says his own personal influences lately have been Van Morrison, Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, the Beach Boys, the Heavenly Gospel Singers, Neil Young, Tom Waits, and Bob Dylan. "I've been listening to them all a lot lately and they've seeped in for sure. These aren't just my personal influences lately but have always been. Dylan is one of the few people I go out of my way to see live these days. I saw Jonathan Richman a little while ago, too."
And when asked about Talking Heads he said with a laugh, "I've heard the Talking Heads before. That's that band from the 80s, right?"

i couldn't place it for a while, but i finally realized that the second track on the album threatens to morph into radiohead's 'stop whispering' throughout the song.
i think it was the tinymixtapes review that mentioned the 'live thom yorke' sound of the vocals which is quite accurate....

Not sure why PFork compares CYHSY to Neutral Milk Hotel or Wilco in the album review- they're not even close to either one.

When I saw them at the Movable Hype show, someone commented that Ounsworth sounded like a cross between Bob Dylan and Rufus Wainwright.

A friend pointed this out over the weekend, Alec O. sounds like Tom Verlaine of Television. I agree.
If anyone is interested, Lee from CYHSY is playing with another band (takka takka) tonight at pianos.
