Hip-Hop's Overwhelmingly White Audience

Crowd This article in the Village Voice complements my Gothamist post today perfectly.

"Armed with messages of Black political resistance, Black pride, and opposition to militarization and corporatization, designed in part to counter the commercial hip-hop party-and-bullshit madness dumbing down the nation's youth, hip-hop's lyrical descendants of the "fight the power" golden era today are booking concerts in record numbers—far beyond anything imaginable by their predecessors. Problem is, they can hardly find a Black face in the audience."

Black-conscious hip-hop deals with an overwhelmingly white live audience

I think that article's title should have been "Obvious Observation" with the contents of the article being "Here I'm going to beat around the bush for a little bit and not say what everyone reading is thinking. Then I'll end on racism."

Brilliant!

Thanks for highlighting this article... even tho it may be obvious, I think it's interesting, as hip-hop seems to be at a critical point in its development. Most of the mainstream music is too negative for many independent thinking fans, yet this is the music that's pumped out into urban areas AS WELL AS in the malls in the 'burbs. It's sad that indie/conscious hip-hop is missing an entire audience who might need to hear something uplifting and positive.
