There are lots of runner-ups, but I'll save them for another day. Sometimes I get confused about release dates because of where the album first came out. Like is Feist this year or last year? What about Annie? And of course I still have a stack of 2005 albums on my to-listen-to list.

Put your best-of list, hate-mail, and what-not in the comments.
(and just for the record, I actually wrote this post yesterday... :-)... PITCHFORK GIVES CYHSY a 9.0 )

My top 5:

1) Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
2) The Frames - Burn The Maps
3) The Decemberists - Picaresque
4) Crystal Skulls - Blocked Numbers
5) Stars - Set Yourself On Fire (released in US in 2005)

I still haven't heard the Clap album, dammit...

I know how much you guys like MIA, but I can't stand her and find the album to very annoying...

Posted by Chris | June 22, 2005 9:49 AM

1)The National - Alligator
2)Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah - s/t
3)Eels - blinking lights
4)Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
5) Boy Least Likely to - the best party ever

Honorable Mention: Art Brut, the Decemberists, mia, LCD Soundsysyem, and the New Pornograhers

Posted by Pete | June 22, 2005 9:55 AM

lol that is SUCH a bloggie top 5! not that there is anything wrong with that of course. the ones in the comments too.

Posted by wes | June 22, 2005 10:09 AM

Mine would be all honorable mentions, at this point. There are parts of a lot of CDs that I love, but no single one that has worked its way into my blood. Would do much better at throwing together a mix tape than a best of list.

Except for Andrew Bird's Mysterious Production of Eggs. That one's just plain beautiful.

Posted by J | June 22, 2005 10:12 AM

the hold steady are so horrible. i like all of your other pics, but the hold steady are just so miserable to listen to.

Posted by Steve | June 22, 2005 10:13 AM

You're gonna make a comment like that Wes, but not offer your own list? C'mon...
1. Jaymay

3. Stars - Set Yourself on Fire (Yes, Canada, I know)
4. Eels- Blinking Lights (Didn't like it at first, but it's attractively haunting)

1. Stars - Set Yourself on Fire
2. Autolux - Future Perfect
3. British Sea Power - Open Season
4. Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
5. The Information - Mistakes We Knew We Were Making

Posted by thewicked | June 22, 2005 10:32 AM

i'd put cyhsy, bloc party, stars, and m.i.a up there, but sufjan stevens' "illinois" is my number one by a long shot so far.

Posted by chris | June 22, 2005 10:49 AM

Stars is definitely one of those albums that confuses me with release dates. Love it, but probably not top 5 anyway.

2004 was my year of the Decemberists so Picaresque stays out of the top 5 (might make the top 10 though).

Boy Least Likely To is on that stack of to-listen-to's. Thanks for the reminder.

Interesting that so many people are digging the Eels album. I only gave it one listen, but am about to go back.

Illinois is not actually out yet! sort of.

Keep posting lists, and I'll compile a comments section top 5/10/20/whatever for tomorrow.

Posted by matcoz | June 22, 2005 12:12 PM

You beat me to my posting my half-year favorites, but I can say we share two out of five, at least.

The Clap Your Hands Say Yeah album is special, I've had mine playing constantly in the car since it arrived.

Posted by david | June 22, 2005 12:32 PM

Clap Your Hands Say Hype? C'mon, it's a nice record, but is it possible that the singer's been listening to just a little too much Talking Heads? Maybe give them a few months to develop before crowning them the next big thing (sorry brooklyvegan - I still love your blog!).

Guess my list is pretty much the same as everyone else's:

1. Bloc Party
2. Stars
3. Caribou
4. Spoon
5. Decemberists

Hon. Mention: Edan, Jeff Hanson, Nouvelle Vague, Books, M. Ward, M83, S. Stevens (do unreleased albums count?)

For the new trend of half-year lists:

1. Bloc Party
2. Xiu Xiu
3. New Pornographers
4. The Hold Steady
5. Okkervil River

Posted by Kevin | June 22, 2005 1:37 PM

Honorable Mentions: Spouse, Garbage, LCD Soundsystem, Caribou, Doves, Ben Folds, Coldplay, Brendan Benson, Stars & MIA

10.The Prayers & Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers
9.Gorillaz
8.Hot Hot Heat
7.VHS or BETA (might be 2004)
6.Ryan Adams (Cold Roses)
5.Tegan & Sara
4.White Stripes
3.Bloc Party
2.Decemberists
1.Spoon

I haven't heard every song off of CYHSY, Mos Def, Anthony & The Johnsons, The Raveonettes, Sleater-Kinney, Andrew Bird, British Sea Power, The National, Of Montreal, Devin Davis, Eels, Sufjan Stevens, The Mountain Goats, Steven Malkmus, Foo Fighters, Okkervil River and probably a few other favs of mine, so I can't put their albums in based on that, and therefore the list might change soon.

Posted by Dodge | June 22, 2005 1:37 PM

FYI - autolux came out in september of 2004

1.) spoon - "gimme fiction"
2.) the static age - "neon nights electric lives"
3.) coldplay - "x&y" (i hate to put this on my list, but it really is good)
4.) longwave - "there's a fire"
5.) alkaline trio - "crimson"

Posted by holmes | June 22, 2005 1:42 PM

My runner-ups include Andrew Bird, Spoon, The Mountain Goats and M. Ward.

Love Talking Heads. Recognize the influence, but still can't stop listening to the CYHSY album at a rate I haven't experienced since well...M.I.A., Antony, Hold Steady, Bloc Party, Arcade Fire, Joanna Newsom, Scissor Sisters, etc...

I like the new Smog album a lot too. It sounds better with each listen.
Mary Timony is another album that's been growing on me like Smog

Glad to see a Jeff Hanson mention. I love him.

not convinced on the new White Stripes yet. Gotta keep trying.

I just started listening to the new Cloud Cult album and it may be in my top 10 (massive post coming soon).

Longwave is on the TO-DO list.

New Porgnographers also not out yet! (sort of)

Posted by brooklynvegan | June 22, 2005 1:53 PM

I suck at release dates. If I remove Autolux I can add another to the top 5:)

1. Stars - Set Yourself on Fire
2. British Sea Power - Open Season
3. Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
4. The Information - Mistakes We Knew We Were Making
5. Mary Timony - Ex Hex / Lou Barlow - Emoh (tie)

3. M83 - Before the Dawn Heals Us
4. Sleater-Kinney - The Woods
5. The Decemberists - Picaresque

Posted by Kris | June 22, 2005 2:12 PM

you should do your top 5 disappointments of 2005 too. or are we only supposed to talk about music we loooooove?

Posted by thewicked | June 22, 2005 4:50 PM

disappointment:

white stripes - get behind me satan (am i the only one??)

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2005 5:04 PM

BY FAR THE BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT:

Weezer - Make Believe

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2005 5:07 PM

Well, I thought the new White Stripes was pretty execrable, but there are several songs on the new Weezer I like. I also thought the "Rivers Cuomo, I break with thee!" tone of the Pitchfork review was sort of comically overwrought, and made me like the album more.

Posted by NYMary | June 22, 2005 5:15 PM

Biggest disappointment: Daft Punk.

Posted by Kris | June 22, 2005 5:21 PM

I disagree. I think the white stripes new album is very good. I was surprised on my first listen due to the lack of guitars, but the songs hold up very well. I already like it more than elephant...

Posted by jnforte | June 22, 2005 5:23 PM

I put my 5 biggest dissapointments up on my site...

Posted by uwmryan | June 22, 2005 5:33 PM

Biggest disappointments:

1. Four Tet - good, but the last one was just fucking sublime.
2. The Decemberists - can an album be on my favorites and disappointments at the same time?
3. Beck - phoned this one in.
4. Mountain Goats - also pales in comparison to its predecessor.

Continuing to disappoint: Steve Malkmus, Robert Pollard

Posted by arv | June 22, 2005 5:34 PM

Stephen Malkmus-Face The Truth is my favorite so far. I'm suprised not to see this on any of the posts here. It's his best solo record yet. Plus he was great performing them live. It's brought me back to the first 3 Pavement albums too. Face the Truth is fun, quirky and diverse. Everything I want in a record.

Others I like so far:
2-Spoon, a close second.
3-Andrew Bird
4-Bloc Party
5-Beck

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2005 9:46 AM

Disappointments:

I really feel everything on Illinois is just a continuation of Michigan…maybe that’s bad, maybe not.

The new DMB is terrible, I'm not suprised, I just can’t believe he put it out.

I think Weezer is by far the most disappointing album of the year.

Steven Malkmus hasn’t really blown anyone’s doors off either, but I haven’t heard all of it, so I can’t comment.

Beck is interesting here…not on a lot of best ofs, but not worsts either…where does it rate?

Posted by Dodge | June 23, 2005 10:49 AM

1. CYHSY
2. Beck
3. Oasis (it's good, get over it!)
4. Bloc Party

Sorry, I couldn't find a fifth....but all of a sudden I'm thirsty.

Posted by c-note | June 23, 2005 11:33 AM

compile, bv!!

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2005 3:34 PM

"Beck is interesting here…not on a lot of best ofs, but not worsts either…where does it rate?" - maybe somewhere near the new QOTSA album...

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2005 7:04 PM

Man!

1. Boat - Life is a Shipwreck, We Must Remember To Sing In The Life Boats
2. The Robot Ate Me - Carousel Waltz
3. M. Ward - Transistor Radio
4. The Boy Least Likely To - The Best Party Ever
5. Andrew Bird - Mysterious Production of Eggs

Posted by Marc | June 23, 2005 10:43 PM

1. Sufjan Stevens - so much talent and creativity here...John Wayne Gacy is an incredible song
2. Spoon - a great CD, hard to deny it
3. Decemberists - what great songwriting
4. Husky Rescue - Scandanavia rules!
5. Discover America - I love that first track!

Posted by NaDougs | June 24, 2005 12:26 AM

A lot of good albums have been mentioned so I'll only add one: Mark Mulcahy's "In Pursuit of Your Happiness". It's not as good as his previous two solo albums but there's a reason Thom Yorke and Nick Hornby are big fans of his.

Posted by sleepy | June 24, 2005 3:22 PM

Someone typed:

has the clap your hands been officially released... where can I pick it up besides ordering from insound? I'n in NYC.

--

I don't know if you mean, can the album be purchased in person anywhere or not, but it is definitely officially out - I am in Australia, and ordered it direct from their website: http://clapyourhandssayyeah.com/shows.php

It arrived within a week, which was excellent - and this was about a week ago, so it's definitely available to buy.

Even sweeter, I e-mailed the guys in the band and Alec Ounsworth actually replied to me in person when I asked about the spelling (I am terribly anal with tagging mp3 files when I rip from CD) of one of the tracks.

Can not recommend the album highly enough - it's my numero uno thus far - here are my other favourite albums of Oh Five so far in no order:

All Hours - In Flagrante Delicto
Glen Phillips - Winter Pays for Summer
Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger
Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy
Spoon - Gimme Fiction
The Decemberists - Picaresque
The Lucksmiths - Warmer Corners

OK, my esteemed BV, I haven't heard all of Clap Hands or Hold Steady or a bunch of other things

BUT:

here are my pics:

Stars--by a mile

Okkervil--staggeringly good

Bloc Party--hate the hype, but the music sticks in yr head

Mountain Goats--2 sensational records in 2 years--how easy is that?

Andrew Bird--like nothing else

Devin Davis--uneven but impressive--and it's him on almost every instrument

Decemberists--uneven but essential

Aimee Mann--the critics are wrong

And my nominee for Where Have You People Been All Year is:

Youth Group--they have been playing the heck out of this on KEXP and it is GOOD (kind of like a cross between James and Whiskeytown. Look for it !

anyone wanna tabulate these lists? I'm thinking Gimmie Fiction has to be either 1 or 2.

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2005 12:06 PM

hmm. I'm still playing catch up, but based on what I've heard so far i'd say...

1. Spoon - Gimme Fiction (Genius, pure and simple)
2. Bloc Party - Silent Alarm (catchy, still recovering from concert)
3. Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning (The most powerfully emotional this year)
4. Art Brut - Bang Bang, Rock and Roll (always makes me laugh, So Witty!)
5. British Sea Power - Open Season (One word sums it up: Lovely)

Posted by Casey | July 8, 2005 9:53 PM

1. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
2. The White Stripes - GBMS
3. Stephen Malkmus - Face the Truth
4. Sleater Kinney - The Woods
5. The Boxer Rebellion - Exits

Just got the Raveonettes - Pretty in Black, so that would be my new no.5

Posted by billy | July 13, 2005 7:17 AM

1.) Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy
2.) Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy
3.) Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy
4.) Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy
5.) Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy

Okay, Best of eh?

1. The National (Alligator)
- Peirces with its drunken honesty.
2. Bloc Party (Silent ALarm)
- The drums pound in drug induced dreams.
3. Okkervil River (Black Sheep Boy)
- Syrupy bitter. Morosely sweet.
4. Spoon (Gimmie Fiction)
- Old time rock. Just solid.
5. Bright Eyes (I'm Wide Awake and It's Morning)
- Classic album with Emmylou.

Hey BV, three of your picks were nominated for the Mercury Prize. I hope Bloc Party wins it.

Is there really a point in all these people selecting 5 albums from PF's "Best New Music" to redisplay on your site?

Posted by no name | July 27, 2005 11:46 AM

to "no name,"

Is there really a point in you commenting (anonymously) just to criticize people?

Is there really any point in you leaving a stereotypical Pitchfork-bashing comment that we've seen a million times before?

Is there a reason you didn't list your own 5 choices? Are they so far underground that you didn't bother because no one heard of them anyway? Maybe you don't want to advertise them for fear they might catch on and become uncool.

Posted by brooklynvegan | July 27, 2005 12:12 PM

I didn't bash PF. I just was asking why it was worth everyone's time to present a refined listing of someone else's already small great music list. pf has like 20 best new music albums for the year. There's not that many unique combinations one can produce by grabbing 5 albums from that list. i just think it would be more productive to actually offer some music tips that can't already by acquired by another single source.

not to seem like a jerk.

I think the new Mt. Eerie record is superb, and I'm sure it'll be one of my top five favorite records of the year. Some of the records I've returned to the most this year have been underrated I think -- Josephine Foster, Angels of Light, and Okay. And the Shocking Pinks, Mathematical Warfare. I wouldn't have found it if it hadn't been by accident, and it's awesome. I don't think I've seen it written up anywhere.

in respons to no name.

just to let you know, being relatively isolated (musically), I find all the various top 5 lists to be a very good way to find and get into new music.

so thanks for the work guys

1) Maximo Park (not sure of the year)
2) British Sea Power
3) Kaiser Chiefs
4) the Cribs
5) White Stripes (not as good as Elephant but "My Doorbell" justifies it on any list :) )

Fruit Bats: Spelled in Bones. Hasn't been mentionned yet, I think it's awesome. Of Montreal hasn't had due credit either....I do think The National is my number 1 though.
