iJamming | Jello Biafra to Terrorists, "Fuck You"
"Those who so desperately desire to be either murderers or martyrs to a cause, in direct conflict with the teaching of what they claim to be their religion, should find a nice open space to do so, and blow themselves all up together. To quote Carter’s Jim Bob from the review below, I’m willing to supply the matches. Or to quote Jello Biafra, Siouxsie Sioux and Henry Rollins from the other review below, Fuck you."

The Clap Your Hands Say Yeah-GnR-Satanicide Connection
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Guns N' Roses & Satanicide are three bands I hold dear to my heart. Ends up they're more related that you might imagine (sort of).
It starts with Mr. Brownstone, "the world's greatest GnR tribute" band. "How do they look? Like Axl, Duff, Izzy, Slash and Steven Adler—20 years ago. How do they sound? Tighter than a 13-year-old groupie. The vibe? Hormonal—not a dry panty in the house." [NY Press]
A peak at Mr. Brownstone's link page reveals a list of "bands featuring members of Mr. Brownstone." Two in particular caught my eye: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah & Heather.
Given the center-stage attention Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's been getting, I could have titled this post, "Sean Greenhalgh from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah plays Axl Rose in Guns N' Roses cover band," BUT to me there's more to the story.
Heather are "some dudes from NYC that play some fuckin’ rock n’roll!!!" More importantly, Heather "is a new musical project from the members of Satanicide," and Satanicide kicks serious ass.
SO, Satanicide + CYHSY + some other dudes = Mr. Brownstone = Guns n' Roses. And there you have it.
Did I mention that Hair Supply is a Heavy Metal Air Supply cover band featuring members of Satanicide? yes, I did.

Digable Planets @ Irving Plaza, NYC | Pics

After 9 years off, Digable Planets are back. Thursday night July 7th, 2005 they played to a sold out crowd at Irving Plaza in NYC. Joined by a backing band and DJ Jedi, they proved they still have it and then some with an almost 2 hour exilirating set. We got to hear at least one new song in addition to two from Ladybug Mecca's solo debut. Twas great.

"The reunion of Digable Planets on Saturday night was a nostalgic, if not altogether surreal, trip back to hip-hop's heady days of the early 1990s. After all, this was the pioneering trio that fine-tuned the art of melding buttery jazz grooves with laid-back beats, earning a 1993 Grammy Award for its hit single Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)." [azcentral]

"{Whenever a band announces their reunion, fans look forward to seeing them, but at the same time brace for them to fall flat on their face. DP had the comfort and expertise on stage of a group that has been touring for years, but with the energy of a group that is new to the scene (best of both worlds). They seemed real happy to be on stage like friends who are catching up after years of ---- living, and doing other shit." [tales of a lost space cadet]

'hello, typepad' agrees that "The digable planets are still rockin."

"Utilizing words like "palanquin", "parapets", and "chaparral" may not necessarily indicate you're gay; it could just mean you're a creative writing major. BSS & Apostle of Hustle & Feist & Stars & Collett
Some Arts & Crafts updates...
Stars, who just played the Canada Day concert in Prospect Park, has a video for "Reunion." Watch/Download it. (quicktime) (via Done Waiting)
Feist is on Conan O'Brien tonight (Thursday July 7th, 2005) (via For the Records)
Last week I heard Feist playing in Starbucks. This week NPR reviewed her album.
The Tofu Hut interviewed Feist, and asked her what music she likes. She suggested some. The Tofu Hut posted the MP3s.
Feist highly recommends fellow Broken Social Scenester Jason Collett's lastest solo album (that she also guests on). I've probably listened to it about 20 times. The track ("Hangover Days") with Emily Haines from Metric stands out (listen here), and I like it, but sixeyes REALLY likes it.
For the Records was at the Feist/Apostle of Hustle Canada Day show earlier this week in Toronto. Chromewaves was there too. Who was at the Apostle of Hustle show at Mercury Lounge? I heeard Dr. Dog stole the show (the same Dr. Dog playing with CYHSY @ Southpaw & with Son Volt @ South Street Seaport).

Music blogs close ears to Live 8?
"The Live 8 concerts unleashed a wave of comment among political bloggers, but many music sites stayed silent."
"And as you'd expect, the Afro-blogs are more interested in international finance than in Sir Elton's choice of tracks. At Jewels In The Jungle, we're reminded that the debt relief discussed at the Millennium Development Goals conferences has not come to pass. And The Thinker's Room has some characteristic peppy invective."

Cliktrax Productions | Franz Ferdinand @ Pianos Video
"Cliktrax is an independently produced music television show in New York City. It began in April 2002 as an outlet for up and coming artists and directors to get their music videos seen and heard. It has since expanded into a nice little television show to include artist interviews, live performances, behind the scenes of music videos, and specials."
Bloc Party, LCD Soundsystem, Broken Social Scene, !!!, M.I.A., and Franz Ferdinand are some of the guests they've had on the show.
Franz Ferdinand just announced two upcoming shows at Madison Square Garden. (big shows)
As Deli Magazine points out, "...Piano's has had the distinction of serving as the locale for Franz Ferdinand's first US performance..." (small show)

Tiny Mix Tapes interviews Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
So, what was the Gothamist show (Monday the 20th at The Knitting Factory) like relative to the other shows you guys have played?
T: That was the first show we'd played since that track review on Pitchfork, so I think that brought a lot of people out. Because, the show we'd played before that was at the Delancey, for our CD release show, and that was pretty full as well. I don't know they just keep getting bigger.

Free Flaming Lips Fearless Freaks Soundtrack Download
"As promised, the recordings are very live and span the numerous permutations of style and line-up that the band has experienced. The disc is a unique opportunity to trace the band's progression from fuzz-heavy Okie blister-punk to acid-damaged auteurs. Equally as important, the move to encourage illegal distribution of this music demonstrates that at least a few elements in the industry aren't totally bent on alienating artists from their audience. Wayne Coyne, thank you for washing our leper feet."

Seu Jorge | Tour Dates
"Seu Jorge (b. June 8, 1970) is a Brazilian musician and actor. He appeared in the critically acclaimed movie City of God, and then played Pele Dos Santos in Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, for which he provided much of the soundtrack in the form of Portuguese covers of David Bowie classics." [Wikipedia]
"Seu Jorge has released two albums. In 2001 he released Samba Esporte Fino, a classic brazilian pop album very influenced by the likes of Gilberto Gil and Milton Nascimento. His album Samba Esporte Fino was declared the Album of the Year in Brazil. It was released outside Brazil under the name: Carolina in 2002. In 2005 Seu Jorge, released his second album Cru which was celebrated and critcally acclaimed in Brazil and Seu Jorge was celebrated as the new superstar and renewer of Brazilian Samba-style pop" [Wikipedia]
On June 13th, 2005, Jorge played S.O.B.'s in NYC. Popmatters was there: "Seu Jorge only confirmed his warm accessibility to New York City when he strolled onstage at S.O.B.'s (Sound of Brasil). Warmed up solely by a Favela Chic-style DJ (current Brasilo-hip hop, like Marcelo D2, to CTI fusion jams), Jorge greeted the capacity audience by singing enthusiastically to the DJ's final samba selection, immediately prompting a support chorus from the Brazilian expats in the house."

Stephen Malkmus, Yo La Tengo & Turkey @ Battery Park, NYC | Pics
On July 4th, 2005, NYC & Matador Records gave us a free Laura Cantrell, Stephen Malkmus (Pavement), & Yo La Tengo concert in Battery Park in Lower Manhattan.

By the time I got there, Malkmus was half way through his set (he played second). The line was huge. You could hear outside the gated area, but people were crammed into every available spot. Even when headliner Yo La Tengo finished their fourth song, the line to get strip searched and OK'd for entry was still massive. After listening for a bit from across the street, and taking pictures of a turkey that was chillin' in a tree near the entrance, I took off. I had a rooftop to get to anyway.

"If you have tried to pre-order the Sufjan Stevens: Illinois LP at Asthmatic Kitty, you will have difficulty, not because it is selling out (which it is or should be), but because DC Comics issued a cease and desist order to Asthmatic Kitty regarding the image of Superman on the cover of the LP!" On Wednesday, July 20th, SOUTHPAW along with JENYK.COM, MELODYNELSON.COM, and ASCAP bring you the 2 Year ANNIVERSARY OF VICIOUS, the premiere showcase for new music in New York the last two years. This is undoubtedly THE show this summer for the great many of us who dig that precious moment in a bands career just before the rest of the world joins our party. A truly amazing lineup with SAINTS AND LOVES, CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH, DR.DOG, and DIRTY ON PURPOSE with special guest DJ's THE EX LOVERS (MISS MODERNAGE AND ULTRAGRRRL).

special guest DJ's - The reunion of The Ex-Lovers - Ultragrrrl and Ms. Modernage!
In 2003, I became more involved with Southpaw. One day, After tiring of going through countless demos, I started looking on the Internet for ways to find out more about what was going on locally. It just so happened that at this time the music scene in New York really started to become informed by the music blogger sensation. Jenyk.com, a site run by Jasper Coolidge was the first site I checked out. It was filled with amazing photos and exuberant reviews of what I agreed with were great bands that I had seen and heard at the ‘Paw or though their demos. From there I got linked to Melody Nelson (Jaspers partner in VICIOUS), as well as JINNERS, and ULTRAGRRL. These sites were run by truly passionate music fans like myself. These were folks that without meeting or really knowing them, I felt a kinship with based on our obsession with music. It was the start of an exciting time to be involved in the local music scene. For the first time since the late seventies a real underground scene started to take place in New York, and as a fellow certifiable music geek, I felt honored to be on the peripheral of it all.
Via the music bloggers bands like Stellastarr**, Interpol, Ambulance Ltd, Dirty On Purpose, TV On the Radio, and more recently the super super hot Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, as well as a host of others were introduced to an audience that in the coming months would eventually devour the limitless buffet of amazing music that was coming from New York and Brooklyn. It didn't take long for New York and Brooklyn to become the real home of the best new ear candy in the world. As the assistant booker at Southpaw, I became enamored of the VICIOUS nights that Jasper and Melody were doing at Sin-E (the night has since moved to Rothko), and was able to book some great bands after seeing them first there. I believe the VICIOUS nights are responsible for the development and cultivation of this "second wave," that started here in New York a few years back and shows no sign at all of low tide. Over the last year or so, I have become quite friendly with these two people and am ecstatic that this recent Brooklyn/Manhattan collaboration falls on my birthday so I will be able to celebrate with them their achievements. All under the umbrella of the best music around today. Hot.
So if you are lucky to get tickets for this show before they sell out, you will be able to see why these two folks deserve a lot of credit for all that they've done for the music scene in New York.

Online Live 8 Coverage beats TV
"Television seemed shockingly old-fashioned during Saturday's worldwide concert for poverty relief. AOL's coverage was so superior, it may one day serve as a historical marker in drawing people to computers instead of TV screens for big events."
