Doveman @ Joe's Pub, NYC | Pics
My new favorite drug, Doveman, played Joe's Pub in NYC on Thursday August 4th, 2005. Was great. Was a CD release celebration. (Buy it from CDBaby.) David Byrne was there.

"Sometimes bands make great albums against all possible odds. There's no telling why these albums are so great -- for some reason, they just are; how else would it be possible to explain the significance of Nevermind the Bollocks when Sid Vicious was barely able to play bass? Clearly, when it comes to great albums, many factors beyond mere musical talent are at work -- some serendipitous je ne sais quoi that pushes a record beyond mere competence. In many ways, The Acrobat is worthy of a French cliché or two -- but unlike anything by The Sex Pistols, it's easy to see why the album is so strong: just look at the band members." [Splendid]

"Doveman is comprised of some of NYC's best musicians -- vocalist/pianist/organist/et cetera Thomas Bartlett (Elysian Fields, Chocolate Genius, Mike Doughty), banjo player/guitarist Sam Amidon (Stars Like Fleas), violinist/electronics whiz Jacob Danziger (Ida, His Name Is Alive, Flashpapr), cornetist Peter Ecklund (Gloria Gaynor, Madeleine Peyroux, Loudon Wainwright III), guitarist/drummer Shahzad Ismaily (Tom Waits, Brian Eno, Rage Against the Machine), who joined the band after The Acrobat was recorded, and legendary drummer/guitarist/co-producer Dougie Bowne (The Lounge Lizards, Iggy Pop, Laurie Anderson), who recorded The Acrobat in just two days with Grammy winning producer/engineer Patrick Dillett (David Byrne, Mary J. Blige, Arto Lindsay). With musicianship like this, it's certainly no accident that The Acrobat is as good as it is." [Splendid continued]

"The members of Doveman refer to their music as "insomnia pop" -- a description that's wryly accurate, if not mildly understated. Yes, this is bedroom music, suitable for those free-thinking types who never wake up before noon, but it's also intriguing, honest and rewarding. The album draws upon elements of pop, classical, jazz (improvisation) and ambience to relay its forlorn message: loneliness, melancholy and heartache are all part of the mix, which is, fortunately, free of pretense." [Splendid continued]

DJ Russell Lissack of Bloc Party vs Chromeo (vs Art Brut) | MP3s
Russell Lissack of Bloc Party DJ'd at Misshapes in NYC on Saturday (July 30, 2005). Photo to the left swiped from the Misshapes photo gallery.
Chromeo are Bloc Party's VICE labelmate that are heavy on the "sleazy/cheezy/80's electro funk." You may have seen them open for Bloc Party at both of their shows at Bowery Ballroom.
When Bloc Party isn't selling out Roseland or getting in fights with Art Brut, they're remixing music...or at least DJ Russell is.
Run to Smashed Robot for the Bloc Party remix of Chromeo's "Needy Girl" and a hot 40 minute Chromeo mix MP3.

The Irrelevance of CBGB
"There is no longer a single club that is a hub for punk, said Yalan Papillons, who books punk shows for the Knitting Factory in Lower Manhattan. Since the early CBGB days, the music, too, has become a complex world of genres, she said, including black metal (which tends toward writhing on the floor and a kind of a cappella screaming), pop punk (more popular music often aired on Fuse TV, a cable and satellite network), and kiddie punk (a fist-throwing, more juvenile, I-hate-my-mom kind of music).
CBGB simply no longer books the best acts, Ms. Papillons said, adding, 'I don't really watch the CBGB calendar anymore like I used to.'" [NY Times]
"It still lends street cred for bands to play once at CBGB, but it's only because of the lore and the legend. Then they move on to Mercury Lounge, Rothko or Southpaw - just three of dozens of decent rock clubs in Manhattan and Brooklyn which have a pulse, cleaner bathrooms and a more band-friendly environment." [NY Post]

RANA @ CBGB (Benefits Day 3), NYC | Pics
"If you've pretended to enjoy just about all the manufactured Strokes/Hives authenticity you can stand, check out RANA's mullet-worthy smart-ass cock rock. Smart enough to mock their roots but still stoopid enough to rock like mooks, RANA could well be the missing link between the Velvets and Ween." [Village Voice]
"RANA blends a polished New Wave sound with stylish improvisaion and a heavy dose of adrenaline. (They) rely on well-crafted, roof-raising, rock songs to impress anyone that comes within earshot." [City Beat]

I think I've been trying to catch RANA live for years. Between my long-time RANA-loving friend and lots of posts at The Big Ticket, I couldn't justify living another minute without finally catching the local band that headlines shows in NYC all the time. The fact that Wednesday (August 3rd, 2005) night's show was a CBGB benefit made it even more appealing. It was well worth it.
You can download RANA music for free at the Internet Archive (13 shows as of this post) and on their own music page.

"Although at first glance RANA could be written off as part of the saturated new rock revolution, their refreshing mix of synth-pop and jangly Southern fried rock places them comfortably on the margins. These four Brooklyn imports spent their early years together in NJ developing an eclectic musical craft that features shared vocals and riff-driven, playful songs." [Flavorpill]
RANA share a drummer with Sam Champion, another popular local rock band. (other members of Sam Champion seen in the audience at this show)

In honor of CBGB, RANA did a Talking Heads cover, and expressed how honored they were to get to say they played at CBGB.

Bauhaus Touring | 2 nights in NYC
"Although there were bands before them that pre-figured the style, Bauhaus is generally agreed to have been the first goth group. Bauhaus combined a number of influences (punk music, glam rock, and even dub) to create a gloomy, but very passionate sound which appealed to many left looking for something new in the wake of punk's collapse. Their sound proved very influential, inspiring or bringing attention to a whole wave of post-punk groups delving in the intense, gloomy style that would eventually come to be known as goth rock. Bauhaus remains one of the most popular groups of its era and genre." [Wikipedia]
Bauhaus have reunited. They'll be at the Nokia Theater at Times Square in NYC on November 11th and 12th, 2005. I'll post all dates when they appear.

Nokia Theater Update
"Betting $21 million that New York City needs a performance hall that's bigger than a ballroom but smaller than a music hall, a corporate concert promoter, A.E.G. Live, is opening a new, midsize theater in Times Square devoted to rock, comedy and wonders of cellphone technology.
The schedule for the hall, the Nokia Theater Times Square at 1515 Broadway, at 44th Street, was announced yesterday. It includes an eclectic roster of performers, among them the creepy hardcore band Slipknot, the cross-generational star Steve Winwood, the brotherly teenage pop trio Hanson and the sarcastic comedian Norm Macdonald. The theater's official opening is scheduled for mid-September, with the first confirmed act - the punk band Social Distortion - doing four nights starting Oct. 1." [NY Times]

David Byrne on Payola
"By the mid eighties, when Talking Heads had had some hit singles, the biggest of which was “Burning Down the House”, I got the news. “Burning Down The House” had some serious “indie” promotion money behind it. It got played on some college and other stations without financial prompting, but the jump to “commercial FM”, as I think it is called, was helped by cash and whatever else was used at the time — probably coke and women." Living Colour playing CBGB Benefit | Tickets on Sale
"It took the fledgling band a few years for their sound to gel, as they honed their act at N.Y.C.'s famed CBGB's. But the group found an unlikely supporter in Mick Jagger, who took the band under his wing, produced a demo for the quartet, and helped them secure a record deal with Epic (just prior, Glover had to take a brief leave of absence from the band, as he landed a role in Oliver Stone's Vietnam War epic movie, Platoon). Living Colour's debut album, Vivid, was issued in the summer of 1988, yet it would take a few months for momentum to build. By the winter, the band's striking video for their anthem "Cult of Personality" was all over MTV, pushing Vivid to the upper reaches of the charts and to platinum certification..." [Artist Direct]

Spazzy Answer Songs | MP3s
"All these periodic payola inquiries would lead you to believe that the only way to get a song played on the radio is by delivering duffel bags full of cash, cocaine and Adidas sneakers to a station's doorstep. Not so. For several decades, another time-tested method was to shamelessly hitch your tune to an already established single, a phenomenon known as the Answer Song.
In 2003, Dave the Spazz collected 28 answer songs for his WFMU marathon premium CD, which are now presented here as MP3s, with a few of the originals linked as realaudio archives."

Green Day making American Idiot movie, kill Lookout! Records, not playing CBGB

"It's not a matter of ethics or anything like that, but Green Day have left their longtime indie roots behind. In their wake, they will bury what is left of Lookout! Records." [Productshop]
