Broken Social Scene @ Summerstage, NYC | Pics
http://centralvillage.blogs.com/cv/2005/07/beat_but_not_br.html
Here's two photos of Broken Social Scene playing their last song @ Central Park Summerstage on Thursday July 14th, 2005. They opened for Dinosaur Jr. Unfortunately I got there too late, so that's all I saw :(

Amy from Stars provided the female vocals (that I didn't see).
Central Village caught the whole show and has pics.

Maybe you missed Kevin Drew going on (and on) about the arrests, then: Two members of BSS were busted in Washington Square Park trying to buy pot, and at least one was charged with assaulting a police officer. They were still in jail when the band went on, and -- though all the main folk seemed to be there (there were 11 on stage... Who got busted, the triangle player?) -- they came out pretty shoddily. The sound mix was lousy (Amy's mic was pretty much off for the first two songs), and they all seemed out of sorts.
It was my 5th or 6th BSS show, and easily the worst I've seen... though they really pulled it together on "anthems for a 17year-old girl."
Drew said something along the lines of "I don't know what's more pathetic: Two 42 year-old men trying to buy drugs in a park, or the way this country has suddenly made such a big deal about marijuana the past 15 yrs..."

What the hell are they doing buying pot in washington square park? They might as well have gone into the local police station and asked the duty officer if he could get them a dime bag.

I'm sure in Canada these guys DO smoke with the local police officers. Our pot laws are probably quite culture shock for these Canucks. but yeah, the 2 members never heard of a delivery service?...the show was great, even though Drew seemed very pissed at the beginning about the arrests.

I wonder if Emily Hanes was one of the two. Metric aren't touring and apparently she was not there last night.

I thought I heard him say one of the guys arrested was their producer, Dave Newfeld, but I'm not certain...

They should have called Mr. Nice Guy. Actually, maybe not, heard he is on sabatical in South Africa.
:p

The only people who are members and/or tour with Broken Social scene that are 40+ are Charles Sparing (not the the triangle player), David Newfeld (their producer) and quite possibly Howie Beck.

dave newfield was one. he showed up with some futuristic sunglasses on for which the crowd at intonation got an explanation for. the explanation appeared as he took of the glasses and had two black eyes. the cops beat the shit out of him. i guess they broke two of his ribs too. bss is now trying to sue, but suing cops is pretty hopeless. anyways, they played a great show at intonation!

I got to speak with Dave and Kevin after the Intonation Festival and got a good look at his face... two nasty black eyes, a bunch of stitches, poor guy. Yeah, Kevin was STILL pissed off, but they were amazing. Actuallly, the whole Festival was tight. Chi-town, baby!
