haha.. i love the ending quote, "fuck the police". it's true that many cops are sadistic, but as drew pointed out, not all. unfortunately (or perhaps realistically) most of us only mention the bullshit excessive incidents the cops provide us with. instead of worrying about people scoring pot, which, as most of us know, leads to harmless introspection, maybe the cops should be on the lookout for the highway robbery that is a $6 bottle of red stripe at luke & leroy's.

The bass player for Dungen got the crowd to chant "Fuck the Police" the other night at the Mercury show. Seems a couple of the Dungens were hassled by the police earlier that day on the Coney Island beach. I was wondering what the Mercury staff were thinking as the chant got louder (but then quickly subsided).

ep. I totaly agree with you (see my post under the first BSS story). I don't feel one bit sorry for this fool. Thats the price you pay if your stupid enough to try and by grass in a NYC public park. This guy is now officaly my front runner for "idiot of the year". Any law suit will be a total waste of the bands time and money and will be thrown out in court.

Doesn't it seem the cops used undue force to arrest him though? Did he have to be tackled from behind? And if someone tackles you by surprise, wouldn't your first reaction be to resist?

And even the most minor reaction automatically results in the cops charging you with "resisting arrest". He may have a good case if he has witnesses.

The real waste of city resources is paying law enforcement officials to apprehend and charge people with "crimes" where there are no victims - under the pretense of enforcing outdated and useless laws. Jaywalking is an offense -- maybe they should be enforcing that.

It wasn't even an "Almost Crime".

The problem is that HE wasn't buying the weed, he was watching his friend buy it. He was charged with posession and resisting arrest when he never had any on him. The guy who was buying it inexplicably wasn't arrested. So: 24 hours in jail, 3 cracked ribs (which he ended up being sent to the hospital for), 2 crazy black eyes and some big cuts on his face and forehead. The picture that Pitchfork has up is completely accurate, he had glasses on while playing with BSS at Intonation but took them off when the singer started talking about it.

I'm sorry but i still think this guy is an idiot. Anyone who takes his account word for word as the truth is being naive. I have lived in NYC for ten+ years and have never been "jumped" by cops for no good reason. Why, among other things, because I don't buy drugs in public parks.

But a quick lunchtime Google search found, among other things, references to the Mollen Commission report, published in July 1994. Here's some quotes:

"We'd just beat people in general....to show who was in charge."

You are being naive, by making a gross generalization. So basically anytime someone is arested and allegedly beat up by cops its an automatic misuse of power?

The fact is this guy was arrested for buying illigal drugs in public (most likely some crappy brick weed). If he was not engaging in this activity, he woudn't have been beaten up.
Moreover, his own account sound absurdly implausable, and these are his words. He thought he was being mugged? Thats the best he could come up with. What kind of mugger team up in groups of four and tackle there victims in broad day light in otherwise safe public parks. What a joke.

There is nothing wrong with Pot. But 99 percent of drug dealers, especially ones who sell in Public Parks, also sell crack, also carry guns and just are bad for neighbourhoods and society. This guy from Canada comes down here and buys drugs in a public park, it just promotes crime, and its even sort of racist, he goes to a park in spansih harlem(they must have drugs??). Like I said before, BSS are popular enough that someone in the city must be able to hook them up with weed. This guy is just an idiot. He should at least aknowledge that he took a risk and lost, thats the way it goes.

Agreed -- it's stupid to buy weed in Washington Square Park (not Spanish Harlem) in broad daylight. (And the product is usually lacking in quantity, not quality.)

No, I don't think these dealers are carrying guns and dealing crack. That's other neighborhoods -- far from Greenwich Village. I feel just as (or not just as) comfortable around WSP weed dealers as I do around NYC cops. And I don't think the presence of the dealers leads to an increase in crime. They've been in WSP for decades -- it's still a safe park to be in night and day.

Either way, the BSS guy ended up black-and-blue. It's his story vs. the cops story. I don't trust the cops.

I wish some of you would turn your insightful eyes towards the criminals and dangerous individuals who rape, murder, and steal, destroying neighborhoods and communities in the process. These are the people you should be concerned with. I hardly think that attacking the 40,000 police working in a city of 8 million serves anyone's interests.

Do you honestly believe that there are 40,000 angry lunatics roaming the streets who leave their homes and families waiting for the chance to "just beat people in general....to show who…? [is]… in charge…?” Has it happened? Yes. But, to impugn the entire department is simply absurd and irresponsible. I think that what the vast majority of police officers want to do is just to make it through a day without being punched, spit on, and shot/stabbed. Like all civil servants they want to put in 8 and half hours, collect a paycheck, and go home, not, to commit crimes and operate "outside the law." I happen to respect civil servants and the jobs they do and I do not believe they all “disgruntled” and that they all “hate their jobs.”

I've lived in this city my entire life, 27 years, and in all of those years I have somehow managed to avoid ever having a negative interaction with a police officer.

You don't got to hate all the cops in NYC, just those dirtbags.
And even in the interview that David Newfield
gave to pitchfork after the event, he cited the humanity and kindness of the police that proccesed
him at the station house, which is way more than any of us would do after catching the beating that he did.
