Clap Your Hands Say Yeah & The National Tour Dates
* "I want to hate this band simply for having one of the worst names ever." - that from the heated conversation going on in my last CYHSY post.

07-20 Brooklyn, NY - Southpaw

Quoted by Brooklyn Vegan--life is getting almost close to complete.
By the by--I dig the band--especially the David Byrne channeling. I'll be catching them in Philly, although I'll be shouting their acronym, not that claptrap they call a name.

can someone tell me how all this hype actually started? It can't be the band, and it can't be the music. I work in A&R, I see bands every night, and i would say that at least 3 bands a week that i see blow this band away, yet for some reason people are now writing about them (myself included I guess now, hahah). There aren't any outstanding songs, they are just good. the band isnt made up of outstadning musicians, they are just good, and the performances aren't spectacular, they are just alright. Nobody leaves the show saying "wow, this band is fuckin awesome". People leave the show saying "cool band, now let's find a place to go and get drinks and have some fun".
I'm just curious, thats all. I'm curious where the hype started. Did Pitchfork actually start this, or was there a champion before them. Its not like they have played a ton of shows and have a big fan base. I guess I am just trying to learn how this happened.
Personally I don't care for the band, and neither do many of the people in the business, but we all respect what is happenign and are just mystified as to why it is happening i guess. Any insight would be great.

A&R people are wrong all the time. Sometimes they become jaded...sometimes, their tastes become extremely specific and rarified, which can prevent them from appreciating a band with obvious popular appeal.
Clap Your Hands is not a great live band, but the songs are better than just good. They've got really strong, satisfying melodies. Very solid songwriting.
I had this album a week before Pitchfork rated it and I found it infectious and totally listenable. Not mindblowing, but a consistently good album throughout without any dips in quality. That's saying a lot, even if the bar isn't set too high. Most albums have a few good songs, and then a big dropoff. Not here.
And their style has a familiar, upbeat quality that made it easy to adopt. For better or worse, it fits right in with accepted indie favorites, so the way had already been paved for people to like it. But, yeah, a 9.0 does a lot.

dammit. why does nearly every band hate atlanta?
Posted by fat asian baby | July 14, 2005 3:54 AM
pitchfork said more dates to be announced (maybe Atlanta)

i also hate their name for the reason that it makes headlines difficult to write, or at least to keep them to our two-line format
i'm hoping these shows will have the audience be like, *clap* "yeah!" *clap* "yeah!", etc., before they go on stage

A&R Dude: One of the first blog mentions I saw was here on BV announcing their album release party at Delancy. But for hype, nothing beats a rare 9 plus on P-Fork. Personally, I like the album a lot and will be checking them at Southpaw for the first time. But I have to agree that they chose a really, REALLY annoying name for their band.

Dear Keith (A&R guy),
I'll tell you why no one in the "business" gets the band. It's because the "business" has lost sight of what listeners want out of a band. And CLAP has been able to circumvent the "business" people and has made a grass roots swell of fans. Fans that read music blogs like this one and reveiw sites like pitchfork because we love listening to music and we value the opinions of these people more than the limited confines of the tastes of those in the "business". (No offense).
We don't need you, music "business". we now have blogs, and websites, and independent labels and micro-labels, and bands upon bands like CLAP.

I love how Keith comes off as the stereotypical fastkid ignorant A&R person from a movie. lol No offense.

OH SNAP!

I think the lead singer of CYHSY has one of the most annoying singing voices for a band that I have ever heard. I saw AO do a solo performance.

Keith, back in January/Febuary they were appearing on the "Oh My Rockness" list quite frequently (opening for some pretty impressive acts in the NYC area), so I stumbled to the website and listened to the tracks and thought it was absolutely fantastic. I had to wait five months to hear moreconfirmed my appreciation for them). Nora, "I Rock I Roll," has also been championing their talent much longer than Pitchfork's "discovery."

a central village post with 3 of their songs on 1/26/2005 (at the old site centralvillage.blogspot.com) was what did it for me.

can someone please tell pitchfork to stop reporting on clap your hands when there is no news? it's seriously getting to the point where they just report on nothing with them. Headline: clap your hands STILL looking for that right label! News Flash, clap your hands taking a shit. ENOUGH, it's like a fan site

What the hell are you talking about, they only do that for Radiohead???
but seriously, the new item yesterday hd legitimate news regarding new tour dates and the repressing. I may have been a tad lengthy, but it was news nonetheless.

CLAP ar SOOOOOOOOO yesterday's news. literally.
now what is the next band we can all hype up that will totally fail to impress people?
Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2005 3:54 PM
I'm in a NYC band that others have called "good," "ok," "alright I guess," and, "not that great so what's with the hype?"
I wish we could blow up like CYHASY! Maybe we should copy the Talking Heads instead of all this powerpop nonsense.

You really shouldn't plug your band by making fun of another.. Plus your website is pretty annoying..
