I missed the Lightning Bolt show at Tonic in NYC Friday night (July 22nd, 2005), but JP Gutierrez was there. These are his pics and words...

"The lower east side had a calm Friday afternoon as if to expect the stormy night at Tonic's where Lightning Bolt ripped into the night. Touring with Afrirampo, a Japenese duo of guitar and drum in a 60's nasty psych rock, as support, the band took the floor with some difficulties."

"The drummer, Brian, explained to the crowd of chipsters and hippies, that a cable was out and needed a minute or two. Meanwhile the bassist, Brian, went through a series of sound checks that went from louder to louder with fuzz, to louder with fuzz and blow your hair back."

"The night kicked off with Dracula Mountain, and set the mood for a sweaty neck snappin time."

" As the jam session went on, Brian moved his kit from the side of the floor to near the center where he was immediately enclosed by the legion of fans. The show seemed to last a hearbeat, having played for about an hour or so, the crowd demanded more, but the peanut butter pie which was a birthday pie for Brian had found it's way to smothering the crash cymbals."

"Brian sternly said, "That's It!", and looked at his crowd and knew he more than satisfied the crowd with the flash of the lightning bolt."

Hey JP/brooklynvegan,
I was at that show (it was awesome) and I'm in many of your pictures. I guess there are a couple of things to point out:
1) Afrirampo is actually in most of those pictures. Pikachu is on the floor in a red dress, Oni is wearing a saffron dress.
2) There's a kid in the audience, Eric Robertson. He's the drummer for the Joyful Beginners. (http://www.thejoyfulbeginners.com/)
3) Sean Lennon, apparently, was in the audience. I dunno if you can see him, though.
Is there any way I can get a full-res copy of those pictures? I didn't bring my camera!
