Pitchfork, Insound, Critics, CYHSY & Sasha Frere-Jones

"And Pitchfork, at least, is cultishly influential. A recent rave on the site put Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s self-titled debut in the No. 1 sales spot of online retailer Insound. The retrofied New York band—think David Byrne fronting the Shins—released the album itself and has yet to tour extensively. Matt Wishnow, president of Insound, says his site has sold more than 1,000 copies of the disc, which makes it “one of the fastest-selling records in the history of Insound.”

According to Nielsen Soundscan figures, Pitchfork faves have done quite well with minimal mainstream press coverage. The Fiery Furnaces’ Blueberry Boat sold 30,000 copies. Broken Social Scene’s You Forgot It in People sold 75,000. And the Arcade Fire’s Funeral, Pitchfork’s favorite album of last year, sold 167,000 units.

“It’s huge,” says Wishnow, “the fall of the rock critic as celebrity that we used to know—the Greil Marcus, the Chuck Eddy, the Christgau. Peer opinion and access to peer opinion have been so elevated and multiplied that people tend to know about [records] from a trusted voice before the rock critic even does. In most cases, the rock critic finds out about it after the average Insound or Pitchfork or blog reader knows about it.”"

what I find a little silly about the Insound quote is that, so far as I know, they're the only ones actually selling the CYHSY album. i mean, if you've got exclusive rights, you're naturally going to move "a lot," right?

Posted by matt | July 13, 2005 1:11 PM

they finally shipped mine yesterday

It's still impresive as CLAP has zero press/marketing machine and they are riding this all on their own steam (fart jokes aside).

CLAP moves units. End of story.

we should build a big satellite dish and beam wireless internet into space so that alien civilizations can read blogs!

Posted by anonymous and loving it! | July 13, 2005 2:14 PM

Though impressive, I agree that the article should have at least mentioned that Insound was the only place to buy it.

Posted by brooklynvegan | July 13, 2005 2:29 PM

maybe the aliens in War Of The Worlds attacked because Insound was temporarily out of Clap CDs?

Posted by conrad | July 13, 2005 2:35 PM

wow conrad, just wow.

2 members of CYHSY are be scientologists. But which ones?

Posted by Still loving it. | July 13, 2005 3:05 PM

that's a good question

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2005 3:11 PM

'other music' is now selling the cd.

Enough about this band. They are not that good a band. Is everything else out there sooooo bad that it makes these guys look this good? I don't get it. at their shows everyone stands around and says to eachother "they have a lot of work to do"... but yet on the blogs people talk about them like they are the second coming of Christ. i mean come on. Obviously everyone has their own taste, but it seems that we have lowered our standards for these up and coming bands. Maybe I'm crazy, but there have to be better bands out there for all of us to get behind and propel into the consciousness of those who read these blogs.
I guess I could be all wrong though since they did sell some records. I just find it hard to believe that this band can be seen as special.
Sorry for the epic novel of a rant :)

Other Music is selling it too

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2005 3:50 PM

it just amazes how so many people are rushing out to buy it presumably off the hype. why? i've still only heard the mp3s on their site and i like what i've heard, but i wasn't blow away. we will be publishing a review of the album soon though and the writer loved it. and it looks like i'll be buying it too.

Posted by dave | July 13, 2005 4:03 PM

I haven't rushed out to buy it. And yet I feel comfortable enough to comment on it.

Posted by Still loving it. | July 13, 2005 4:16 PM

Pitchfork just added another massive news item discussing the repressing of CYHSY's debut and tour dates. It is official. They are this years Arcade Fire. Accept it.

I want to hate this band simply for having one of the worst names ever. They make the name Hoobastank seem downright pleasant.

Posted by Matt | July 13, 2005 5:13 PM

while they may be "this years Arcade Fire", they're not nearly as good, especially live from everything i've heard/read.

still a fun record tho

Posted by solace | July 13, 2005 5:27 PM

HA! Clap is their (un)official name now?
If the original name isn't bad enough they are now an STD.

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2005 6:24 PM

why are people saying they have no press? the while thing is about the fact that cyhsy have had a ton of press, pitchfork writes about them once a week.
are they any good live??

Posted by shep | July 13, 2005 6:26 PM

I just wanted to say that while we (Insound) were the only place to sell the CYHSY record, there was also a while where we were the only place that had Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Interpol for a spell and they didnt sell this many. We're selling so many copies each week that the band would actually be outselling some of the bands on the Soundscan indie charts for top new artists. Its curious to say the least. I can't explain this level of sales. That's all. We just havent seen this response before.

Posted by Matt | July 13, 2005 6:28 PM

i take Matt from Insound's point, but it seems to me at least a partial explanation is probably pretty simple: the rise of the music blog. Interpol and YYYs came out when there wasn't nearly the audience of sites like this one (nor were there nearly as many sites like this one). surely P-fork's readership has grown significantly in the past two years, as well. thus, if you have folks reading about the band all over the interweb (they did a show for Gothamist, for goodness' sake) and the only way to buy the record is that same medium, it seems pretty reasonable to assume people are going click through.
that said, I love the record. think it's great. so good one, CYHSY. I just thought the author of that article should have put the situation in context.

Posted by matt | July 13, 2005 8:03 PM

the album is goddamn good. no more no less. let us all enjoy it and be better because of it.

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2005 2:15 AM

I tend to agree about the impact of blogs for this record. It's the biggest difference I would say. The sense of immediacy around their 'moment.' The idea that many many people not only find out about the record quickly but that so many blogs reinforced the message that this is THE record to have.

Posted by Matt | July 14, 2005 9:17 AM

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but for those that try to listen to the album and find his vocals gratting, try skipping the 2nd song.

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2005 10:51 AM

this band is not this years arcade fire. that will be wolf parade.

Posted by anon | July 14, 2005 11:56 AM

Listen, I really liked the MP3s I was hearing like a few months ago (tidal wave gets stuck in your head). I bought the album at other music about 3 weeks ago before they ran out. The album is very good, and sounds a lot better as a whole, both comprehensively and audibly, than the MP3s do. They are very talented.

I was dismayed when the pitchfork review came out. it seemed like too much too fast. i think i would have liked to enjoy them more as a NYC band for a while, and now they are doing some weird tour. But hey, good for them, right?

Posted by Jackie | July 14, 2005 12:40 PM

Those 3 free tracks on their site got me so excited for this album I put in an order at Insound. Now that I've had the CD for a week, I feel that the rest of the CD is not as good as Tidal Wave or Home on Ice. These 2 songs are incredible songs on an otherwise uneven album. It's like going to see a movie and you recall that the best parts were shown in the trailer.
Think "Song against Sex" from On Avery Island - can't call On Avery Island a great album, but you need to own "Song Against Sex"

I saw them at Moveable Hype last month; bought the cd that night. The show was great - the cd is amazing. It pulls 2 spins a day from me and every day I expect to get sick of it. However, that has not happened. Yes, the hype machine is working overtime but for good reason. This band is incredible and I look forward to seeing them grow in the next year.

Posted by phan | July 20, 2005 7:52 PM

Ron, there are other bands out there way better than Clap...check out The Eames Era at theeamesera.com
They are great man.
4-song EP is out now on C-Student Records...debut full-length due in 2 months time. enjoy.

Me neither, what gives - why's everyone SO open on this group?!
