Tinariwen @ World Financial Center, NYC | Pics

Writing a weekly list of recommended NYC concerts challenges me to find new things. This week I discovered Tinariwen. "Tinariwen is a Touareg group from the southern Sahara whose music is close to the blues of Ali Farka Toure. The band's name means 'empty places' which certainly reflects their desert homeland." "Their Music is loosely based on traditional Touareg music and the harsh melodies of the one-stringed Touareg violin, but also incorporates influences such as Bob Marley...[calabash music].

They were in NYC for three performances. The last two were Wednesday at Joe's Pub. The first one was a free show at World Financial Center Plaza by/in Battery Park on Tuesday (July 19th, 2005). These pictures are from that show. The best way to explain their "world music" sound is by asking you to listen yourself. The BBC has an entire Tinariwen concert from 2004 online in streaming format. The Tofu Hut, who has more info, links, and an MP3, says "they're more post-modern than the Killers and then some."

As the show went on, more and more people got up to dance.

I dig that record. Sorry I couldn't make the free gig.
