brooklynvegan: What show did you see last night?

I saw the amazing Greg Fine at the Living Room. First show in months after a writing period and first full band. REALLY REALLY highly recommended for those who enjoy a strong male singer-songwriter that can really belt it out yet be delicate as well.

Also saw the lovely Kristin Diable at the Living Room a bit later that night.

i too saw dinosaur jr and broken social scene. As i was sitting on a bench on 69th and fifth Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore walked by me with their daughter. I started shaking. I folllowed them for awhile trying to build up the courage to talk to them. But i didnt.

I saw Built to Spill at Slim's in San Francisco. They played from 11-1:30, but they weren't as amazing as I was hoping. Still lots of good shows coming up here: Deerhoof and Jolie Holland tomorrow, Sufjan on Sunday, and Beck and Le Tigre on Monday. I got some great pictures last night and someday I will share them like you do.

saw dinosaur jr. i was planning on checking out dr. dog and son volt earlier but didnt want to run the risk of missing dinosaur as the central park shows tend to surprise you with early sets.

i think it was ok. they sounded good musically but the setlist is the same throughout the tour. i knew it wouldnt happen but it wouldve been nice to hear some post-lou dino songs thrown in but whatever.

j looked OLD...scary old. and the idea of seeing our favorite bands from our youth reform as old men and shelling out $40 to see them rock around is a bit lame when i think about it. theres nothing wrong with them making some $ since they never did when they were great but last night felt very similar to seeing chicago play the today show in rockefeller centre. the audience encouraging the band that they still rock and the band encouraging the fans that they are still young...it was strange.

I saw about 45 minutes of The Roots (who were in jam band + medley mode, unfortunately, unlike their tight set at Area:One a few years back) then PATH'ed it over to Hoboben for Dungen. Dungen were great 60's fun when playing their "proper" songs, but again jumped into too many instrumental jams with flute solos and the like. They need another album of actual tunes to round out their set, IMO. But it was worth a try!

I saw Turin Brakes at the Bowery. They had a full band for the first time in NYC and they rocked pretty hard. Except for their aversion to the guy yelling for "72" repeatedly and the other guy yelling "Lick My Spoon" (??????) during most of the set it was a flawless performance.

Saw calexico- they were the perfect band for the middle aged hipster crowd at the show...they covered that mintuemen song corona.

I went to see West Indian Girl and Turin Brakes at Bowery Ballroom. It was empty, probably b/c of all the free shows and Dinosaur. It was really good. Turin could have played a bit less of the new stuff, but I understand that is what they are promoting.

I saw Dungen at Maxwell's. Sold out, everyone totally into it, the band delivered. Catch them at Siren if you can.

I went to Tegan and Sara at Webster Hall. Strange choice from all that was going on, I know. It was what I was in the mood for and they didn't disappoint - not groundbreaking stuff, just fun, catchy tunes and their endearing, occasionally embarassing, sisterly banter.

And Webster Hall was more bearable than usual - it mustn't have been completely sold out and didn't feel quite as hot and crowded as usual. The sound still wasn't tremendous though.

I saw the Roots show at Pier 54, which lasted nearly two hours. I was expecting a fairly poor setup (you get what you pay for when it's free), but it ended up being a great show. The sound was solid, the weather was perfect on the Hudson, and the Roots and crowd were into the show. Tough to miss Dinosaur Jr, but I'll see them next week in Chicago...

I also saw the Roots last night at Pier 54. The put on a really good show. Seeing Glenn Hubbard do some crazy solo on the bass was worth the trip. They were also doing a bunch of cover songs to get the crowd into it. I really liked their cover of Black Betty, I think by bluesman Leadbelly, which they flipped with a really fast soul clap rhythm and heavy baseline. The band also seems to have this new guitarist from Flatbush, Brooklyn.

Saw Broken SS and Dino. from one of the reserved bleacher seats in the back. Usually, the only good sound at Rumsey Field is when you stand right in front of the stage, so I was anticipating being disappointed (but not enough to actually get off my lazy ass and fight my way to the front). Turned out that Dinosaur was pretty loud anyway.

Definately an early 90s vibe to the whole proceedings. I'm glad I wasn't close enough to see how old J. looks, but his playing was amazing regardless.

Surprised it wasn't a bigger crowd. Ticket price have anything to do with it, you think?
