Blondie @ CBGB Rally in the Park, NYC | pics

Blondie, one of the top bands to ever come out of CBGB, co-headlined the "CBGB Forever" rally/benefit in Washington Square Park today (Aug 31, 2005). Earlier in the month, Debbie Harry played a solo show at CBGB for the same cause.

It wasn't really a reunion. In fact, it wasn't that long ago that I saw them at MSG after they put out a new album. OK, it was six years ago, but according to their gigography, the last show they played as Blondie was in 2004.

Their sixth show ever was at CBGB. They were called the Stillettoes then. Total they played CBGB 36 times, the last of which was on May 7, 1978 (assuming the gigography is correct).

* Some Talking Heads introduced them.
* The Bouncing Souls played before them.
* Everlast and Little Steven spoke after them.

Doveman opened the show that included The Silent League, The King of France, and Alec Ounsworth & The Pelican Picnic at Mercury Lounge last night (Aug 30, 2005). Last time I saw them, they had a real piano. At this show, just a keyboard. Next time, a real piano again. There's nothing else I need to say because Yeti Don't Dance wrote a beautiful review.

Bono, Sachs speaking at NYU | Tickets
"Glucksman Ireland House - New York University (NYU), a leading Irish-American academic institution, today announced that two of the world's leading campaigners for the eradication of poverty and third world debt -- best selling international author Professor Jeffrey Sachs and U2's Bono -- will present its inaugural Moynihan Lecture on October 5th. Bono will introduce Professor Sachs...
The inaugural lecture, which is named in honor of the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, will take place at the Jack H. Skirball Centre for The Performing Arts at New York University. In excess of 800 people are expected to be in attendance.
Columbia University's Professor Sachs is the author of the best selling book The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time. He is internationally renowned for advising governments in Latin America, Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Asia and Africa on economic reforms and for his work with international agencies to promote poverty reduction, disease control, and debt reduction of poor countries. He was recently named among the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine.
The lecture will be introduced by musician and political activist, U2's Bono, who also wrote the foreword for Professor Sachs' landmark book. Bono first became involved in issues affecting Africa as part of the Live Aid response to the Ethiopian famine in 1984. He has actively supported Amnesty, Greenpeace and the Jubilee 2000 'Drop the Debt' movement. Bono's intensive lobbying of politicians all over the world recently helped force a promise from wealthy nations to cancel $100 billion worth of poor countries' debt.
The lecture series has been established by Glucksman Ireland House to commemorate the renowned Senator's contribution to political and economic affairs around the world throughout a remarkable and admired political career. The late Senator Moynihan is recognized as has having been one of the foremost political thinkers of his generation and one of the leading influences on political life in the United States during the 20th century.
Loretta Brennan Gluckman, founder and Chairperson of Glucksman Ireland House, said: "Senator Moynihan was an exceptional statesman, scholar and Irish-American and a standard bearer for making a positive difference. His contribution to the academic world and his legacy is an inspiration to all, irrespective of their political beliefs. He was a great man, a great thinker, a man of great principle, a great American and a great Irishman. We are proud to have this opportunity to honor his memory in such an appropriate manner with the generous participation of Bono and Professor Sachs -- two people who in their own right are helping to define the world we live in today and shape the world we will live in tomorrow. "
Tickets for the event will go on sale August 30th by calling or visiting the Shagan Box Office at 566 LaGuardia Place (Washington Square South), +1 212 992-8484, Tue-Sat 12noon-6pm; or Ticket Central at 416 West 42nd Street (Between 9th and 10th Avenue), +1 212 279 4300. Daily 12noon-8pm. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.skirballcenter.nyu.edu. The lecture will take place at the Jack H. Skirball Center for Performing Arts, NYU at 566 LaGuardia Place on the south side of Washington Square Park on October 5th 2005. The program begins at 6pm.
About Professor Jeffrey Sachs
Jeffrey D. Sachs is the Director of The Earth Institute, Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development, and Professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University. He is also Director of the UN Millennium Project and Special Advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the Millennium Development Goals, the internationally agreed goals to reduce extreme poverty, disease, and hunger by the year 2015. He is the author of hundreds of scholarly articles and many books. Sachs was recently elected to the Institute of Medicine and is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Prior to joining Columbia, Sachs spent over twenty years at Harvard University, most recently as Director of the Center for International Development. A native of Detroit, Michigan, Sachs received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees at Harvard University.
About Bono
In addition to his other efforts to eradicate world debt and poverty, in 2002, Bono established DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, and Africa) and has been campaigning for a greater worldwide response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic devastating Africa. To raise awareness of the AIDS emergency, Bono traveled in Africa with US politicians, and traveled through America with African AIDS activists. Recent promises from the US have resulted in 230,000 Africans receiving life-saving anti-retroviral AIDS treatment. This year, U2 have championed the One Campaign to Make Poverty History, helping to sign up over a million Americans in four months." [Yahoo News]

Alec Ounsworth & The Pelican Picnic @ Mercury Lounge, NYC | pics

Last night's (Aug 30, 2005) Alec Ounsworth & The Pelican Picnic show at Mercury Lounge turned out NOT to be a secret Clap Your Hands Say Yeah gig. It wasn't his solo singer-songwriter act either. It was what appeared to be a brand new band, though it's unclear if Alec wrote all the songs himself. It's also unclear whether the band, that featured members of NYC's IDA, are keeping the "Pelican Picnic" name. Alec said something like "I'm Alec Ounsworth, and tonight this is the Pelican Picnic," as he pointed to the band who he never introduced otherwise.

I anticipated a mob scene at Mercury Lounge, afterall the rumor that it might be a secret CYHSY show even reached the daily amNewYork newspaper. The chalkboard outside the club made it pretty clear that Pelican Picnic was not Clap Your Hands. Perhaps people turned away when they saw that. The venue was about half-full (100 people?) for their set. Half-full is still pretty impressive considering Pelican Picnic only exists on the Mercury Lounge calendar. Obviously people were there because of Alec's Clap Your Hands fame (or to see Clap Your Hands), and the band's lack of communication about the show anywhere (including Alec's personal site) gave me the impression they were fine with that.

Imagine a country-western Clap Your Hands. Imagine a female voice accompanying Alec's (the drummer also sang). Imagine more Bob Dylan than Talking Heads. That was Pelican Picnic. It was good.

* The CBGB rally featuring Blondie and the Bouncing Souls today in Washington Square Park will be televised streamed across the Internet. You can watch it from the comfort of your computer exclusively at Download.com
* David Byrne has been pretty quiet thus far in the fight to save CBGB, but according to one story, CBGB "has drawn support from Tommy Ramone, Blondie's Debbie Harry, the Talking Heads' David Byrne and E Street Band guitarist Steven van Zandt, who is trying to mediate."
* According to the amNewYork newspaper, "members of the Talking Heads" will be at the rally.
* One commenter in yesterday's post asked, "is it true that Bad Brains with Henry Rollins is playing this?"
* The Bouncing Souls are among the confirmed performers at today's rally. Productshop was at their CBGB benefit show last night where they announced, "Well tonight we were going to play a Bad Brains song. Actually, we were this close to having HR join us tonight, but it fell through so we're not going to play it tonight. But hey, tomorrow we're playing a fifteen minute set in Washington Square Park to save this club and HR will definitely be onstage with us."

The BSSLESS Arts & Crafts' Most Serene Republic
The Most Serene Republic @ Mercury Lounge 8-24-05

Above photo from kathryn's set at Flickr
"About three years ago, and virtually out of nowhere, Broken Social Scene appeared like some refreshingly talented blip on the indie music radar. Until this rogue band of Canadians started popping up on so many "wish I'd heard of them last year" lists, it was no stretch to say that not many people (especially outside of Canada) had heard of Arts & Crafts Productions.
Now, a mere three years after the fact, BSS has been elevated to household name status in new rock circles, played massive festivals like Coachella, and has a highly anticipated new album set to drop in the fall. As such, Arts & Crafts has expanded somewhat, offering up releases from other bands such as Stars, Feist and Apostle of Hustle. Each has garnered its own respective heaps of critical praise, but each has also contained a member of BSS, as have all A&C artists. That is, until The Most Serene Republic." [Popmatters]

The GoStation | Free Residency Ending | CMJ 2005
Don't say I never told you about the GoStation's Monday night summer residency at Arlene's Grocery in NYC. Tonight (Monday, Aug. 29) is the fifth and final free show in the series. Here's some hype...
"In case you are really dumb or you live under a rock, I am here to inform you that my lovely new bffs The GoStation have a residency at Arlene's this month." [get an MP3 at Sweet Blasphemy]
"Their set lists have become more and more solid over the past few months and they really have begun to own the stage, especially frontman Doug who sings with a great intensity that is very difficult to not get drawn in by." [I Rock I Roll]
"Monday was a fantastic return back into New York. It was nice to see the GoStation boys play a great set at Arlene's. If you haven't seen them yet, go check them out next Monday for the last night of their residency." [The Underrated]
"The GoStation played a great show at Arlene's on monday night in a room full of fans, it was awesome to witness." [Melody Nelson]

Garage Rock, Garage Critics, CYHSY, Super Furry Animals
"...In an odd way, Pitchfork shares the virulent politics that drive a lot of the traffic in the blogosphere and on the Web. Much discussion on the site is about who has sold out and who has not, about how the Mainstream Media is clueless about music (guilty as charged, in my case, anyway) and who is actually down for the cause.
While so much user-generated content on the Web is tendentious and full of flabby partisan attacks, Pitchfork steps up to the plate with a rigorous rating system, serious (if idiosyncratic) critical standards and a roster of 40 or so talented young writers.
In a current review of "Love Kraft," by the Super Furry Animals, the writer, Marc Hogan, gives the record an 8.5 - so precise, those rockists - and in his rave goes over the top and stays there to very nice effect..." [NY Times] (thx Neuman)

The producer-rapper (Kanye West) follows his Pazz and Jop-winning debut The College Dropout with a collaboration with Jon Brion; together they transform West's chattering, seemingly unrealistic ideas into an expansive, imperfect masterpiece." [Pitchfork gives a 9.5]
"Rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight was shot in the leg early this morning (Aug. 28) during a party hosted by Grammy-winning hip hop artist Kanye West, police said." [Billboard]
"If you're thinking this week's Time cover featuring hip-hop sensation Kanye West looks a little familiar, you're right. It features "the crouch" pose that was made famous when Ellen DeGeneres came out as a lesbian back in 1997." [Blogcritics]
"Tower Records, America's leading independent music and movie retailer, today announced that it will welcome Hip-Hop Superstar, Grammy(R) winning producer and recording artist Kanye West to its NYC Lincoln Center store on Tuesday, August 30th, at 5:00 p.m. for an exclusive in-store appearance and autograph session, occurring on the same day that Kanye releases his much anticipated sophomore CD Late Registration." Levy @ Mercury Lounge, NYC | pics
Naturally all the hype (Verbose Coma called them "my new favorite band in the world.") surrounding the NYC band Levy led me to check out their show at Mercury Lounge on Saturday night (August 27, 2005).
They sound like Coldplay. Sometimes they sound way too much like Coldplay. Maybe that's why a commenter wrote "Like Coldplay, only without the guilt" in the Levy post I wrote a few weeks ago. Maybe.

Lady Miss Kier @ Wigstock 2005, NYC | (NSFW) pics
Lady Miss Kier & Lady Bunny @ Wigstock
Lady Miss Kier of Deee-Lite fame debuted two new songs at Wigstock in Tompkins Square Park on Saturday (Aug. 27, 2005). Now in its 20th year and only two hours long, Wigstock is part of the annual East Village Howl Festival.
Warning: the rest of these photos are not all safe for work...
The first song was pretty good. It was about a man stripping...
The second song was incredible. It was very reminiscent of Deee-lite. It was very anti-war...

The Scene is in Brooklyn | Barbès
"...Coleman is symbolic of the shift. One of the core members in a closely knit circle of musicians who defined the downtown jazz scene in the 1980s and '90s, he celebrates his 50th birthday this week with a pair of concerts. They won't be in striking distance of his tenement apartment, near the former residences of Allen Ginsberg and Charlie Parker. Instead, two Brooklyn venues will host: Barbès in Park Slope and the Issue Project Room, a nonprofit space on the Gowanus Canal in Carroll Gardens where events are staged in a renovated concrete silo.
"It was amazing when Barbès started," said Coleman, once a regular at the Knitting Factory, a sprawling TriBeCa club that made its name with avant-garde jazz but now rarely books it. "The fact that it built so quickly into a scene made a lot of sense. I never thought of Park Slope as a happening place, but Barbès gave it focus."
The shoebox-shaped bar was opened in 2001 by a pair of expatriate Parisians, Olivier Conan and Vincent Douglas..." [Newsday]

Thursday @ CBGB (Benefit), NYC | pics

I was a Thursday fan. Full Collapse was my album. I last saw them live a few weeks before War All the Time was released, and I remember loving the show. Jonah Matranga (Onelinedrawing, Gratitude) opened and joined them on stage (he also contributed to their album that was about to come out). Fast forward two years. I'm psyched they're playing a CBGB benefit. I get tickets, and throw on Full Collapse to prepare. Nostalgia factor aside, I couldn't get in to it at all. Was I angrier then? Has my musical taste changed? Why does the screaming suddenly sound funny? Am I older? Wiser?...

The show was still great, though I found myself only getting excited for the hits. I'm always happy if a crowd is lively and I get to leave a show sweaty. They played some new songs (off the album they're currently recording) which did nothing for me, but the crowd seemed generally into them.

Les Savy Fav & Fred Armisen, wacky guys
Tonight is the Les Savy Fav, Thunderbirds are Now, Rahim, Fred Armisen show at Bowery Ballroom.
"Les Savy Fav vocalist Tim Harrington presents quite the live spectacle. He's chubby, bearded, balding and eccentric - like your weird uncle who spent time with a cult in the early '70s. Your really weird uncle. Harrington once cut off a lock of an audience member's hair with a knife, then burned it on stage....
...That kind of working-without-a-net spirit has endeared the band to fans, among them "Saturday Night Live" cast member Fred Armisen, who will be the opening act for the LSF in tonight's show at Bowery Ballroom. Armisen, a former drummer for punk band Trenchmouth, met the LSF through a mutual friend, David Cross, of "Arrested Development" fame, and has since toured with the band whenever "SNL" is on hiatus." The Vandals played CBGB | RIP "Stevo" Jensen
Stevo Jensen singing for The Vandals

The Vandals played a CBGB benefit show on August 20, 2005. Steve "Stevo" Jensen died the same week.
Former Vandals lead singer Steven "Stevo" Jensen passed away at his home on the island of Maui last weekend due to causes as yet unknown. Jensen sang for the Vandals from 1980 through 1984, appearing on the band's first two full-lengths, Peace Through Vandalism and When In Rome Do As The Vandals before being replaced by current vocalist Dave Quackenbush." [antiMusic]
Mike Neuman was at the CBGB show...
"I saw The Vandals at CBGB on Saturday night. It was pretty packed, but I don't think it was sold out. Jerry's Kids opened. Never listened to them before. They all looked like they were in their mid-40's. The Vandals finally came out and opened with...Cafe 405? I think it was Cafe 405. I can't remember exactly. Anyway the crowd was really, really fun. They asked for a show of hands of who had seen them last time they played CBGB...a few people raised their hands. Then they asked how many people had been alive last time they played CBGB (April of 1987). I can't believe how much energy the band had after 24 years of playing cheesy (yet loveable) pop-punk. Oh, and Josh Freese was drumming, so that was really cool. Here are the songs that I know they definitely played, in no order..."

Danzig's Mother spotted at The Dark Room
"Tricia Romano, the Village Voice’s resident party girl, has taken hold of the DJ booth. We plop down next to the guy in the tie-dye and cutoffs. “Turn up the fucking Nirvana!” he screams. He turns to us.
“I know Gawker. You’re going to make fun of me,” he accuses. “You better fuckin’ keep me anonymous.”
He refuses to reveal his name, but he happily divulges the other details of his life. He’s from Alabama, likes long walks on the beach and puppies, and he thinks Gifford Miller is really neat. He’s also a local DJ. So, what’s the best song to spin at a party like this? He considers. “Mother, by Danzig.” He looks at us intensely. “No, wait! If you play Attitude by the Misfits, people will freak the fuck out,” he declares proudly. Service journalism at its finest." [Gawker] (thx J)

Overdose victim Mellie Carballo, Last Night's Party Regular
If you live in NYC, you've see her picture on the cover of almost every newspaper (specifically the picture to the left of both victims). You've probably heard or made a joke about bad heroin. You've read about it in Gothamist, Gawker, Newsday, the Daily News, the NY Sun, and especially the NY Post.
If you frequent club nights featured on Last Night's Party like Misshapes and Trash, you may already know how this frontpage story hit close to home...
"But she also was a fashionista whose sexy picture graced a banner on the edgy Web site Last Night's Party, and was someone who would have gotten a "twisted kick" out of the headlines her death generated, a club land buddy said." [Daily News]
"The last few weeks in NYC clubland were tumultuous. The L.E.S. was abuzz with the bad news of the ODs of two 18-year-old girls—one of whom was a familiar face on the club and bar scene. Two weeks ago, Mellie Carballo and her high school friend Maria Pesantez were found dead with a combination of heroin, cocaine, and alcohol in their systems. (Since August 10, four others have died of apparent ODs in downtown Manhattan.) Though The New York Times reported the two met their friends at the Dark Room at 10 a.m., a Dark Room spokesperson says they reviewed videotape of that night shot both inside and outside the club: "We watched the tapes and they weren't at the club. And we were closed at 10 a.m."
Despite being underage, Carballo was a regular on the downtown club scene. A tribute to her with an accompanying photograph briefly appeared on the website for the weekly party Trash! (It has since been taken down.) (NOTE: It's there) On lastnightsparty.com, she was pictured with Motherfucker's Michael T. The site's photographer, Merlin Bronques, wrote: "I met Mellie at Beauty Bar a few months ago. She loved having her picture taken, and she made any photographer look good. She called me a week before she died to say that the panoramic pinup I took of her at 'Bust' a few days ago was her 'favorite picture ever,' and we scheduled to shoot again at her house this week. She was buried in her yellow '100% Mellie' Fightcats T-shirt right next to Jam Master Jay and not too far from Aaliyah, Malcolm X, and Christopher Reeve. I'll miss her." [Tricia Romano]

Bell Orchestre | CMJ 2005

As Pitchfork pointed out today in their "recommended" 7.8 review of "Recording a Tape the Colour of the Light," Bell Orchestre is an Arcade Fire side project. "Bell Orchestre, led by the Arcade Fire's Richard Reed Parry, sparks memories of critically maligned early-decade instrumentalists Ghosts & Vodka and Telegraph Melts-- bands derided, in part, for their lack of distortion."
* Some amazing pics of Final Fantasy and Bell Orchestre (you see 1 above)

CBGB Wants Mayor Bloomberg | Lease to Expire
"CBGB supporters and several City Council members are asking Mayor Michael Bloomberg to step in to mediate the ongoing lease dispute between the legendary club and its landlord, the nonprofit homeless aid group Bowery Residents' Committee.
The lease on the 31-year-old club, where punk rock was born, expires Wednesday. Negotiations are ongoing. However, with less than a week left on the lease, both sides have yet to meet on a series of proposals and counterproposals for a new one." [Newsday]
QUESTIONS
1) What happens to the September shows (CMJ included) if the lease is not renewed?
2) Anyone hear anything about the supposed CBGB event in Washington Square Park on August 31?

Myla Goldberg of Brooklyn on Colin Meloy
"Two years ago, the Decemberists' Colin Meloy wrote a song about Myla Goldberg's pretty hands and dangly limbs, but she "must have had a brain lesion or something," because she didn't remember ever meeting him. "I'm bad," she says. "It turns out we talked at a reading. But it's not like he said, 'Hello, I'm Colin Meloy, the lead singer of the Decemberists.' "
A friend e-mailed her about the song, which describes her as "unique New York" ("I need New York/I need New York"), but she assumed it was a joke. When she finally listened to the CD, she "started blushing and smiling simultaneously."
With the publication of her first novel, Bee Season, Goldberg—who plays banjo, lives in Park Slope, and is "really intrigued by human frailty"—... [Village Voice]

Iron Maiden vs The Osbournes
"NEW YORK (Billboard) - Iron Maiden's manager has condemned Ozzfest fans who pelted the band with debris during its performance at the hard rock festival's weekend stop near Los Angeles.
The British metal veterans also endured periodic outages of the sound system, and Ozzfest organizer Sharon Osbourne came on stage afterwards to call Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson a "prick" for allegedly berating her husband, Ozzy Osbourne." [Reuters]

Bunky @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC | Pics (part 2)

The best news ever came when Bunky was added to two of Sufjan Stevens' recent NYC shows. I'm already a fan of their album and legend has it they put on a great show. That's what the people of their hometown San Diego say anyway. I got the chance to find out on Sunday (August 21, 2005), and it's true!

It was pirate night at Bowery Ballroom (said Sufjan who headlined the show), so Bunky told pirate jokes in between songs. Here's one someone transcribed in the comments of another post:
A pirate walks into a bar. The bartender says "Excuse me, sir, but I that you have a ship's steering wheel sticking out of your pants."
The pirate nods and says, "AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH, it's driving me nuts!"

Devin Davis | CMJ 2005
"Devin Davis sprang out of thin air it seemed, to deliver a one-man rallying cry for the lonely and for the redemptive joy of power pop. Offering up the one-man band/production team wonder, Lonely People of the World, Unite! (Mousse)." [sixeyes]
"This guy has an anthem, whether he knows it or not. Eleven anthems, in fact, thanks to some guy from Chi-town (via Florida) named Devin Davis who has single-handedly written, recorded, performed and produced a debut album --- Lonely People of the World, Unite! --- of almost unprecedented quality and depth of thought. Think Pinkerton without the pain, or Funeral if it was about loneliness instead of loss. Davis crams enough reckless enthusiasm, pop smarts, and shit-hot Bowie rock’n’roll into Unite’s 36 minute runtime to make Augie March look like a jam band." [cokemachineglow]
"Mop-topped and horn-rimmed, Chicago by-way-of Florida singer Devin Davis is ambitious, but it's not necessarily his nasty trombone or theremin chops that make his debut solo album better than your local mom-and-pop clerk's self-described "Bolan meets Pollard" pop masterpiece. Instead, it's his knowing way around a walloping chorus and his welcome sense of restraint and economy that allow said hooks to live for many hum-worthy listens." [Pitchfork]

Elvis Costello | Show, Sighting & DVD
Quick true story:
After the Colleen / Hawk and a Hacksaw show at Joe's Pub Tuesday (August 9th) night, I walked by CBGB to see if there was any exciting benefit action going on before ending up on Houston a few blocks west of Mercury Lounge. While deciding if I should continue my adventure to Bowery Ballrom to try and get in to Hot Snakes, Elvis Costello and a blonde woman walked by me. A few seconds later some guys asked if I saw Elvis. I said yes, and they proceeded to chase him down the street. I guess the woman was Diana Krall who, according to Gawker, Costello was probably shopping for just a few hours earlier.
Elvis Costello is playing Kaufmann Concert Hall @ the 92nd St. Y in NYC on September 28. Tickets are on sale.

Kid Dynamite reunion benefit show @ CBGB, NYC | pics

Like at the Gorilla Biscuits show a week earlier, people slept on line in front of CBGB to get the chance to see the reunited Kid Dynamite one more time. My luck was high that night (August 22, 2005). In addition to receiving a free ticket to the Sufjan Stevens show at Bowery Ballroom that I ran to right right after (it's only a few blocks away), a kind soul named Joe sold me his extra to Kid Dynamite. They turned CBGB upside down.

Greyarea opened with the show with their own impressive set. "In the demise of Raybeez and warzone comes GreyArea (one word) with some guys who are NYC punk/hardcore veterans features Ernie Parada ex-Token Entry and Black Train Jack, and Vinny Value ex-Warzone and no redeeming social value... with Syd Butler on bass." [punknews]

Sufjan Stevens @ Bowery Ballroom (show 4/5), NYC | pics

I didn't go to Movable Hype last night (Monday, August 22, 2005). I had a ticket to see the Kid Dynamite reunion at CBGB which I figured would be over by 9:00. Then someone out of the blue offered me a free ticket to see Sufjan Stevens & Bunky at Bowery Ballroom again. I accepted. Unfortunately CB's added unannounced openers. The reunion show ran later than expected. That meant I missed Bunky :(, but I did make it to Bowery in time to catch Sufjan's entire performance. It was the fourth of five sold out NYC shows. It was fake tattoo night.

This time I got the chance to see the show from the back of the room. Sunday night I was up front. I can't say if one was better than the other. I can summarize the criticisms I've read in the comments and heard people say (both in actual conversation and while eavesdropping):
* It's hard to tell when and if Sufjan is being ironic
* Too many pauses between songs, too unrehearsed, instrument changes take too long, trying too hard, etc...

It would of been nice to see Bunky perform again. Next time.

The Lifetime Reunion Shows
LIFETIME reunited (photo courtesy of Jade Tree)

"This past weekend, New Jersey's legendary LIFETIME returned briefly for two triumphant shows in Philadelphia and one at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ.
LIFETIME, who had originally been scheduled to reunite for just one show at Hellfest, had been convinced to reunite over their love of the music and the desire to take the opportunity to contribute to some of their favorite charities (listed below). The band then scrambled to reschedule their reunion appearance after Hellfest was cancelled mere days before it was scheduled to occur." [Jade Tree]

Robert Moog RIP
"Dr. Robert A. Moog (pronounced /moʊg/, not /muːg/) (May 23, 1934 – August 21, 2005) was a pioneer of electronic music, best known as the inventor of the Moog synthesizer." [Wikipedia]
"Originally made famous by such infamously acid-eating acts as the Doors and the Grateful Dead, the Moog today is utilized by everyone from Dr. Dre to Wilco. Of course, most of the analog synths of the 60s have replaced by (some would say inferior) digital versions. Not Moogs, which stick to their analog roots, although these days you can control your Moog with a PC." [Gizmodo]
"Performed in large part on a Moog synthesizer, Autobahn crystallized the distinctive Kraftwerk sound while making the group's first clear overtures towards conventional pop structure and melody, establishing a permanent foothold for electronic music within the mainstream. [Yahoo Music]
"When the Get Up Kids incorporated Moog keyboards into their 1999 emo-punk masterpiece "Something to Write Home About" it was a bold move that paid off. Four years later and the moog is go ask the reunion show, OK go, and yes, Motion City Soundtrack, whose use of the instrument on "I am the Movie" is just the icing on an already delicious cake." Even if you didn't realize he was in Bunky (which you probably did unless you got there too late), you probably noticed (actually you probably didn't) the leggy redhead sitting at the back of the stage during Sufjan Steven's set at Bowery Ballroom last night (August 21. 2005). It makes perfect sense since they're in town to play two shows (including the one they played 10 minutes before on the same stage) and Sufjan and Bunky are on the same label.

A Hawk and a Hacksaw opened for Colleen @ Joe's Pub in NYC on August 9, 2005.

"A Hawk And A Hacksaw's unmissable live show displays the virtuosity of multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Barnes on accordion, vocals and percussion (simultaneously!) accompanied by Heather Trost on violin, glockenspiel and melodica. It's a musical journey across the most varied of terrain, dipping in and out of modern composition and American and Eastern European folk traditions, in his inimitable style." [pineapster]
Jeremy Barnes is best known for drumming in Neutral Milk Hotel.

"Darkness at Noon, the second album from AHAAH, is a frenetic, dizzying pastiche of Eastern European folk, klezmer, mariachi, Appalachian fiddle music, and evocative jazz. " [Pitchfork]

Group Sounds @ Pianos, NYC | Pics

Bands looking for PR tips ought to study Group Sounds closely. As YANP put it over a month ago, "they've only been a band for a little under a year. If this is truely the case, I've gotta give 'em a hand. In that short bit of time, they've managed to work their way onto Fuse, into the New York Post and playing alongside Hot Hot Heat and The Kills." It doesn't end there. A peak at their press page reveals quotes from Time Out, Flavorpill, tripwire, and even Manic Mess (with whom I agree about the fake british accent).

Lots of my friends growing up were in bands. I was always part of the posse. The posse travels with the band from show to show, sings along, and often fools industry people into thinking the band has a huge following outside of their hometown. I sensed a posse in full effect at Pianos Wednesday night (August 17, 2005). Many members of the posse joined the band on stage for the last song including the moustached man with the guitar who is not actually a member the band.

I am neither for or against this band. (want to hate them...song stuck in my head...unorginal...but who's original these days...over confidence...or is it stage presence...who writes "say thanks" on a setlist...well actually I guess you should always be prepared...). Do They Know It's Halloween | Listen
"BOO! This fall’s sweetest – and scariest – benefit song is DO THEY KNOW IT’S HALLOWE’EN. This single features a star-studded ensemble known as the NORTH AMERICAN HALLOWEEN PREVENTION INITIATIVE. Both a trick and a treat, this song is a satire - as well as a charity-benefit song with all proceeds being donated to UNICEF."
"An epic journey into the pulsating heart of fear, this song is a call-to-arms featuring: Beck, Sum 41, The Arcade Fire, Sonic Youth, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sloan, Peaches, Feist, Devendra Banhart, Wolf Parade, Postal Service, Buck 65, Comedian David Cross, Sex Pistols’ founder Malcolm McLaren, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, 60s soul legend Gino Washington, Psychedelic singer Roky Erickson, Los Angeles 70s group Sparks, Inuit throat singer, Tagaq (a frequent collaborator with Björk), AND MANY MORE!"

Stars @ Summerstage, NYC| pics

Stars opened for the Decemberists and Death Cab for Cutie at Central Park Summerstage on Thursday August 18, 2005. There's always been something awkward about a Stars live show, but I thought they sounded and looked great. I love Summerstage.

The band was extremely thankful for the opportunity to play the show. When frontman Torquil Campbell announced he'd completed a Trifecta (is that the word he used?), I thought he was going to talk about the fact that he played the Prospect Park bandshell and Central Park Summerstage in the same summer (and a third thing I guess). He went on to say it is was playing Summerstage, performing in Shakespeare in the Park (they're from Montreal, but used to live in Williamsburg), AND getting arrested for pot in the park - all in his lifetime. On a related note, the member Stars shares with Broken Social Scene also played Summerstage twice in one summer (and there was a pot arrest involved).

THIS ONE REALLY NEEDS A "WHAT'S THE CAPTION" CONTEST TOO

New Pornographers, Lee Perry @ CMJ
"If you weren't impressed by CMJ Music Marathon's all-star cast yet, this should do it: Canada's bubble-rocking New Pornographers (September 15th at the Bowery Ballroom) and the legendary upsetter Lee "Scratch" Perry (September 17th at Brooklyn's Warsaw) have been added to the festival's ever-expanding lineup bill. Also added to the festival's FilmFest were two brand-new films—the Joaquim Phoenix-powered Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line and Stay, a "mind-bending thriller" starring Scottish, Jedi heartthrob Ewan MacGregor. A wealth of further CMJ Music Marathon updates can be found on the event website:" [CMJ]

Even if you didn't realize they were Smoosh, you probably noticed the (underage) leggy blondes standing at the back of the stage during Death Cab For Cutie's set at Summerstage last night (August 18. 2005). It makes perfect sense since they're in town to play three shows and Jason McGerr of Death Cab is Smoosh's drum teacher.

Dave Deporis
"Hi, my name is Dave Deporis. I humbly offer my songs to you and thank you for your interest."
No Dave, thank you. (No dad, what about you?) And thanks to thomas bartlett and sixeyes for doing the hard work of finding a diamond in the rough that is NYC's anti-folk singer-songwriter scene...
"His music, Deporis's, is a treasure, buried away from deserving ears, from unknowing ears, but it merits, if not desires, an audience. A voice which does not overpower, nor take the breath away, but commands attention with it's presence. The man, like his music, is vaguely mysterious..." [Alan Williamson @ sixeyes]
"'Swan King in the Snow' and 'Ghostly Baby' are the only songs of his I've heard, and they're astounding, similar to Devendra Banhart's music, but coming from a quieter, lonelier and altogether less whimsical place. I listen to a whole bunch of demos from unsigned bands, and it's exceedingly rare to come across anything that strikes me nearly this powerfully. Someone get this boy a record deal." Former Moldy Peach Kimya Dawson is one of my favorite performers. She played Scenic Monday night (August 15, 2005). Her show consists of a girl sitting in a chair, playing guitar and singing. Tommy Lee Naked | Home bans Fur

"Be comfortable in your own skin and let animals keep theirs," says Lee in a new PETA ad, which features him wearing nothing but his trademark tattoos alongside the slogan "Ink, Not Mink." Lee unveiled the poster at New York nightclub Home last night. Home (532 W. 27th St. between Ninth and 10th avenues) has a door policy banning fur coats (like Tunnel and Spa before it)
Steve Lewis, designer of the nightclub Home, agrees, and is training his doormen to forbid entrance to anyone in fur—even if it’s Jennifer Lopez or P. Diddy. "People come here to have fun," says Lewis. "Fur is a buzz kill."

Illinois not Sufjan's second album

Dear amNewYork newspaper,
The intro. to your interview with Sufjan Stevens this morning incorrectly stated that "Come on Feel The Illinoise" was Sufjan's second album. You further goofed by calling "Say Yes, Michigan" his first.
Check these out:
* Seven Swans
* Enjoy Your Rabbit
* A Sun Came
I hope that clears things up a bit. You probably meant his second state-themed album. Regards, -bv

Peanut Butter Wolf Parade Eyes
""Will the wolf survive?" asked Los Lobos in 1984, and we still ponder that query 21 years later. At long last, we may have an answer: "Yes, but mostly in small clubs." There are less than 300,000 wolves on the face of the planet and a mere 70,000 in all of North America. The upside, however, is that at least 70 of these are indie-rock bands." [Chuck Klosterman]

Fiona Apple Alive....Continued
"The label is wasting little time in tapping fans' curiosity. Epic plans today to reveal a new version of Ms. Apple's Web site, on which fans can hear two of the album's (Extraordinary Machine) songs, "Parting Gift" and the rerecorded "O' Sailor." The latter will also be available for listening at myspace.com, the online social network. Tomorrow major online music services plan to begin selling "O' Sailor" as a single, and Apple's iTunes music service is expected to offer an exclusive bundle of the two songs for $1.98." Kano @ Knitting Factory, NYC | Pics
"Kane Robinson is a smooth character. Like, really smooth. "I don't get nervous," says the 20-year-old East London MC known as Kano. He's talking about gigs that have seen him playing to larger and larger crowds in his native UK but you get the impression he could say the same for his everyday disposition. Gifted with an effortless, hummingbird flow that whizzes around the manic growls commonly associated with British rap, Kano's suave voice nonchalantly crawls into your ear as he stacks tidy bars with workmanlike efficiency and intensity." [Pitchfork]

Kano IS smooth, and he deserves every bit of hype. The show at Knitting Factory in NYC Saturday night (August 13, 2005) was hot - both the temperature and the performers. Diplo's opening set had my clothes drenched by the time Kano took the stage around 1am.
The only criticism I have is the lack of attention paid to Kano's sidekick (someone help me out with his name?). At times I thought he stole the show with his million-words-per-minute brand of rhyming, but I can't even find his name anywhere.

* Prefix was there.
* So was Zombie Politics.
* FADER presented the show.

Reports from Gorilla Biscuits @ CBGB
"then we came home and had chinese food. we left to pick up rich. he went to the gorilla biscuits reunion show at cbgb's. he'd been in line since 11am and didn't get in till around 7pm when they finally just said fuck it you can all go in. he is sunburned, dehydrated and a little delirious. sucks he has to work tomorrow." [drawntofire]
"At around 7pm (early for those Sunday hardcore matinee kids), the five piece took the small stage and the place went mental. I'm talking a pit like you couldn't believe. Everyone was jumping around like it was 1993. Stage-diving, circle pits, crowd surfing, punching, kicking, jumping - this is why my fat old ass has been going to the gym for the last year. It was hysterical to see all those annoying bloggers with their digital cameras go running for cover from the front row from those who came to rock rather than "report"." [blogger]
"the second thing that i thought was even more stupid was the announcement after “cats and dogs” - whih was dedicated to vegetarians and especiall all straight edgers. so far so good - but then the following announcement: “i reall do not want to promote drinking, but we created a special drink for this show." The Kitchen Block Party w/ Wingdale Community Singers
"The members of the Wingdale Community Singers make for an incongruous group so it’s not surprising that their self-titled debut is an odd and often incongruous album. Avant-rock giant David Grubbs, known for his work in Gastr del Sol, Bastro, Squirrel Bait and the Red Krayola, is the musical anchor of the group. The primary vocalist is Hannah Marcus, whose 2004 solo album Desert Farmers was recorded with members of God Speed You Black Emperor! Rounding out the trio is Rick Moody, who shares vocal duties and wrote the majority of the lyrics. Moody is best known not as a musician but as the best-selling author of the novels The Ice Storm and Purple America." [Blog Critics]
"Kick off the fall season with an afternoon in West Chelsea at The Kitchen’s seventh annual neighborhood street fair, produced this year in collaboration with Friends of the High Line. Listen to an eclectic mix of live music, witness unusual performances and odd talents, sample treats from local restaurants, and participate in artist-led activity booths for the whole family!" [The Kitchen]
The Wingdale Community Singers (and others TBA?) play the Kitchen's street fair on Saturday September 17: noon-6pm, Rain or Shine, FREE
David Grubbs is also playing a free show on Saturday August 20 at the East River Amphitheater.

Reports from the CBGB Benefit Shows
"A FEW nights ago, one more band was making a racket on the stage of CBGB. It was the Bush Tetras, a short-lived New York City punk-funk band whose early-1980's discs are now cherished collectors' items. They had reunited for this lone gig as a tribute, benefit and possible farewell to CBGB, the club that could face eviction in September after nearly 32 years on the Bowery. The Bush Tetras chose their last song pointedly. The beat was a single-minded shuffle, topped by a discordant slide guitar and a blunt, matter-of-fact vocal: "It won't be long till the money's gone. Bye-bye."" [NY Times]
"ok, lemme set the scene. CBGB. after italian dinner. meet up with 1/2 bouncing souls. chizzill with andrew and james from against me! (for those of you that don't know, the ! is in the name, fuckface) while watching world/inferno friendship society. then got the BEST spot in the pit. yes, the one RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE STAGE and i had about 5,000 pounds of human flesh, sweat, and hair pushing my knees up against the stage." [sadie1's livejournal]
"During a break in the show, Jerry Only, the lead singer (and one of the original co-founders of the band whose history began in April 1977), had the audience sing Happy Birthday to his 23 year-old daughter Kelly." [gotanyrushheh's livejournal]
"Friday, I worked security for the "Misfits" show at CBGBs. Despite being saddened at seeing Jerry try to ressurect the legend status of the band by himself, it was pretty enjoyable. Jerry is a surprisingly friendly guy, and his kids are pretty reasonable, as well. The show was only them, so it went quickly, and I got to go home earlier than I expected (though later than I wanted to, after a 9 hour day at work, then running to the club for 6 hours, because it ran late).
Tonight I am going to work security for the Gorilla Biscuits. Friday I Was working the back door, basically making sure nobody touched it. That was easy. GB sold out online in three minutes, and there's been an untrue rumor that there's door entry if you show up early. I'm working back door detail again, but this time I'm kind of not wanting to, because I'll have no backup, and I have a feeling I know what kind of peopel will try to sneak in. If I post no updates ever again, it could possibly be because I Was stabbed.." [Othello at Suicide Girls]
"Saosin. Seeing these guys live in a place like CB's is proof God is loving. Things cleared up to where I had room to really get into the groove, punching the air, two-stepping in place, whole shebang. Off to the side, the dancer kids are going at it, and out of NOWHERE this prick comes flying through the pit, grabs the one girl dancing, and spins her around, slamming her into the wall on purpose. He then comes back around to try to continue what he's started, while the (justifiably shocked) girl is getting in his face. More than a few people got between them and defused it, myself included."
