Alec Ounsworth & The Pelican Picnic & Stuff

Pelican Picnic On September 1st Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (CYHSY) kick off their Fall tour which includes dates with the National in NYC and elsewhere, a 9/16 CMJ show with Ambulance at Mercury Lounge, and a trip into Canada.

Alec Ounsworth is the singer of CYHSY.

Two days before the tour (August 30th, 2005), "Alec Ounsworth and the Pelican Picnic" are playing Mercury Lounge. According to Alec's website, the only other band name he goes by is Flashy Python and the Body Snatchers. The Pelican Picnic is a new one, so I guess this one has secret CYHSY show written all over it, but I have no idea.

The full lineup for the August 30th show includes Doveman, The Silent League, and the King of France. No advanced tickets (yet at least)

* You know who Doveman is, but in case you missed it, Doveman are playing my show at Tonic and I took pics of their Joe's Pub show.
* The Silent League are also at Scenic for CMJ
* The King of France are playing with Magnolia Electric Co. and touring with Robbers on High Street
* Clap Your Hands Say Yeah just played South Street Seaport
* Alec Ounsworth recently played Pianos

Startime 2005 CMJ Showcase @ Scenic w/ Tom Vek, Dios, etc..

September 15th, 2005 @ Scenic
StarTime International Records showcase w/ The Silent League, Foreign Born, The Natural History, The Joggers, Dios Malos and Tom Vek.

This is yet another CMJ show (in a very small venue) not to be missed that falls on 9/15 (Tom Vek being especially key on this one). As Central Village pointed out, Cloud Cult, The Wrens, Goblin Cock, etc... all happen on this date. The Amadou and Miriam show is this day too. And its all the same day as the Arcade Fire / Wolf Parade(supposedly) show at Summerstage which was obviously a genius move by CMJ to keep all the New Yorkers (who are all now in possession of advanced tickets) out of the showcases so that out-of-towners could get in.

Colleen @ Joe's Pub, NYC | Pics

"Colleen's live performances tenderly assuage these dichotomies, staking out emotional gray areas swathed in layers of pink, as she caresses a violin, plucks at strings, and turns her smiling eyes from beneath her bangs to the crowd, which looks on in astonishment." [Flavorpill]

Colleen played Joe's Pub on Tuesday August 9, 2005.

Colleen @ Joes Pub

"With a strong knowledge of current rock and electronic music, Cecile Schott (Colleen) draws on late 16th-Century lute songs by John Dowland (from whom the new album, The Golden Morning Breaks, takes its name), 17th-Century compositions for viola da gamba (an ancestor to the cello), 20th-Century composers, kora techniques of West Africa, and Indonesian folk and gamelan to create singularly captivating minimal compositions that combine the tenants of Early Music with contemporary experimentalism." [Joe's Pub]

Colleen @ Joes Pub

"Her new album, The Golden Morning Breaks contains recordings rife with ideas and emotion, songs without traditional beginnings and ends. Rather, what makes her music so special is Schott's intuitive ability to create beauty through simplicity. By avoiding the strict formal approach to writing and recording, Colleen keys into the primal magical realism in the common every day.m in the common every day.mal magical realism in the common every day. "Like nothing you've ever heard. 'Astonishing.'" [Joe's Pub]

Jandek NYC Sold Out

"...On the eighth, there was no new info (not even the ticket price, which at least turned out to be a reasonable $25) posted on their website (whoever runs that thing is wholly incompetent and should be fired). Multiple phone calls to Anthology did no good – the guy at their box office (who only picked up about half the time) seemed like he’d had his memory erased between each call. I had to re-explain the situation every time, and every time he’d yell his questions off to someone in the background. Other Music referred me back to Anthology. Finally, around 2:30PM Other Music said, “They’re here!” Great. I was way uptown at that point. By the time I got to OM, all the tickets were gone. “When they finally marched them over, it was like this wave of people came with them.” Anthology said that – changing the story from before – 100 tix had been reserved for internet sales two days later, on Ticketweb, at noon..." Voxtrot @ Magnetic Field, Brooklyn, NY | Pics

I saw Voxtrot at Magnetic Field in Brooklyn last night (August 11, 2005).

Voxtrot

"Voxtrot takes elements from Gang of Four, Joy Division, the Smiths, and R.E.M., rubs them up in a tight little ball, and bounces it on the hi-hat in rhythm." [The Austin Chronicle]

"Voxtrot have been described as "Smiths, Belle & Sebastian, C86 and a dash of New Order." [me]

"Think Cure, Elkland, Smiths, Bloc Party, Killers, Bravery, Roy Orbison(?!)..." [Central Village]

"I can't say anything about Voxtrot without mentioning The Smiths in the first 20 words." [One Louder]

Voxtrot

I wasn't impressed last time I saw Voxtrot from the back of the overstuffed Rothko in January. The fact that it was uncomfortably packed, the sound sucked (from the back at least), and it was seven months ago could have something to do with it. Last night that changed. To quote Yeti Don't Dance, "Voxtrot fucking ruled," and "Magnetic Field has been added to my list of favorite venues."

Voxtrot

If you think Morrissey is a wimp, you can't get past Voxtrot's homage to the greats, or you just want to avoid ever being associated with a band who may become so big that they turn uncool, then they're probably not for you. If those aren't issues, I recommend their live show. It's unfortunate the one tonight (august 12th, 2005) is again at a potentially packed Rothko. They're back in NYC in Sept. for 3 CMJ shows. All tour dates at their site. Get the MP3s at Central Village or listen at their Myspace page.

Kozelek and Sparhawk | CMJ 2005 & Tour

"The RGC stands to break new ground in the realm of sadness, as it highlights its two most foremost and possibly its only members, Mark Kozelek (formerly of the mopey Red House Painters) and Alan Sparhawk (currently of the former-slowcore Low). Of course, that isn't to say that this collaboration will be swamped in melancholic juices; no one really knows the answer to that question, as they have yet to release even a snippet of what it could possibly sound like. However it is clear that longtime pals Kozelek and Sparhawk will both be taking a brief respite from their respective side projects -- Sun Kil Moon and The Black-Eyed Snakes -- in order to make some selected celebrity appearances." Amadou & Miriam CMJ Tickets on sale

"Now American listeners have a chance to hear one of the year's most unexpected rock 'n' roll success stories: a nimble, playful CD that nods toward everything from indie-rock to dance music. This week the duo made a rare promotional trip to the United States, which ended with a pair of rapturously received concerts at Joe's Pub on Tuesday night. Sometime after 1 a.m. on Wednesday, they began the final encore with "La Réalité," an exuberant Afro-disco track that gives Mr. Bagayoko space to wind his guitar lines around a refrain borrowed from the eccentric reggae producer Lee Perry; from the noise in the crowd, even the two singers onstage must have known that people were dancing." Antony & The Johnsons, Boy George video, Mark Almond, more Town Hall

Antony @ Town Hall "We have just posted dates for the upcoming North American and European fall tours.....Stay tuned particularly for additional dates in the US..." "Antony and Boy George finished filming the music video for the upcoming single "You Are My Sister", which is set to be released as a 4 song EP this fall. The other tracks will be "Forest of Love," "Poorest Ear" and "Paddy's Gone." The video is being directed by Charles Atlas..." "Antony and the Johnsons will be performing as one of the nominees on the UK's Mercury Award program..."

"see a comprehensive series of interviews with Antony on Italian MTV....view a 4 song acoustic set of Antony on piano in a different Italian tv studio....Antony's London X-FM session with Bernard Butler can be listened to here. The Dutch VPRO documentary can be viewed here." [Antony]

"Antony duets with Cocorosie on their beautiful new record "Noah's Ark," appearing on the track "Beautiful Boys." Antony will also be doing some recording with Marc Almond this month."

BirdAntony is a new fansite.

"Antony gets compared to a ghost or an angel a lot; dressing up like a transgender Robert Smith and singing decaying-cabaret ditties about death in a fluttery warble will do that to a guy. But the avant-art-folk diva's performance with his chamber group the Johnsons at Town Hall July 28 revealed him to be just as much an earthbound goof as a celestial being." ...Pitchfork news editor Amy Phillips reviews the Antony show for the Village Voice. (where I also swiped the picture)

Thomas Bartlett (Doveman) reviewed the show for Salon.

The Modern Age asks what's in Antony's bag. Sixeyes posts Antony in his Torontoist mixtape. You Ain't No Picasso is not a fan really, but posted some MP3s anyway.

Feist Tour Dates, CMJ & Tickets | New BSS Song, Album

Sorry I didn't post this earlier (for those that have been commenting about it), but I knew her NYC shows wouldn't sell right out, and I wanted to make sure you knew about the Cloud Cult/Doveman/?/Aziz/ show on Sept. 13th before I posted that Feist tickets were on sale for her Sept. 13th & 14th CMJ shows at Knitting Factory. Other tour dates include Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Michigan, and Philadelphia, and can be found at her website.

In related news, you can now download the studio version of Broken Social Scene's new song called "Shoreline." Feist sings on it. As More Cowbell pointed out, this is "not the CBC ZeD TV version that has been floating around forever." (though its not the highest quality MP3 either) Pitchfork only gave the song 3 stars, but to me it signals a potentially great new BSS album. Pitchfork gave the track 4.5 stars, which is about what I was thinking. Their 4.5/5 was an update to their previous rating of the live version which only got a 3.0/5. The new self titled BSS CD comes out on October 4th.

Amadou and Mariam | CMJ 2005

Amadou et Mariam "You left Amadou and Mariam off your list for tonight monday this show was awesome. david Byrne was at the early show and I managed to sneek into the late show with my early show ticket stub. Awesome shows! They will be back on September 15 at the Hiro. I know it wil be a busy week but people should check them out. They are a blind couple from Mali that play some mean funk afrobeat rock'n'roll." [danfun - in the comments]

"Bagayoko met Mariam Doumbia in the mid-'70s at the Institute for the Young Blind in Bamako, the capital of Mali. Their connection, both romantic and musical, was immediate. "Manchester meta-rock trio Doves, otherworldly plaintive plucker Devendra Banhart and space-prog wonder punks Coheed And Cambria are among the new names added to the growing list of performers scheduled to play CMJ Music Marathon (Sept. 14-17 in NYC). Doves are back in the states to deliver another helping of their chart-topping Some Cities, while Devendra (with Hairy Fairy) will likely be showcasing material from his upcoming Cripple Crow (XL). In other Marathon news, hip-hop is in effect as Pete Rock and Aesop Rock have been added to the performer list. Attendees should also be on the lookout for a special appearance by a reunited Cannibal Ox.
