CocoRosie @ Town Hall, NYC | Pics

CocoRosie @ Town Hall

Here's a few shots of CocoRosie opening for Antony & The Johnsons @ Town Hall on July 28, 2005. The male member of the band is in Tarantula AD. It wasn't long before this show that CocoRosie also opened for Bright Eyes in the same venue.

i got this in an e-mail from lemon red:

"re: CocoRosie - On their first album, they indiscriminately use the N word, and still got a record released on a major indie label. They're also basically two rich white dilettantes who pretend to be French and make faux-folk songs, covering plantation-type songs in the style of Ella Fitzgerald. The whole thing is kinda gross. But I digress."

i really need one of my blogging friends to confirm this. because if it is indeed true, there's about to be a personal boycott of cocorosie. it's one thing to say the n-word, which is intolerable enough. it's a completely worse offense when you do that AND appropriate the style of a great black artist. it's just like the cover of "straight outta compton" that some cute singer/songwriter chick recorded. she said the n-word, and i clicked the "close" button. i don't even remember her name.

The song is "Jesus Loves Me" -- and it's satire.

Lyrics:

Jesus loves me, but not my wife
Not my n-- friends or their n-- lives
Jesus loves me, dat for sure
'Cause the Bible tells me so.

So make of that what you think. I hear it as pure satire, showing just how ridiculous the views of the Religious Right can be, etc.

As for the Ella comparison, I just don't really get it.
