Devotchka @ South Street Seaport, NYC | Pics

"Melding gypsy-folk instrumentation with Southwestern-sounding guitars, DeVotchKa make lovelorn indie that sounds like Calexico playing Gogol Bordello songs or Modest Mouse embracing the accordion..." [Village Voice]

Devotchka headlined the show at South Street Seaport in NYC on Wed. August 10th, 2005, though about 1/4 of the crowd left after opener Clap Your Hands Say Yeah finished playing.

And here's my cheesy synopsis...
Warm weather, a high heeled wearing tuba player, the East River, gypsy rock, a cool breeze, danceable songs, and some beautifully lit ships made for an enjoyable (and free) evening.

To anyone who attended the CYHSY show, I was wondering if can get some advice...
How early did the crowd start forming? Did the band start promptly at 7PM? I want to see Tarantula next Friday, but work in NJ.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well..
1) I wouldn't compare the crowd for CYHSY to Tarantula, but the area in front of the stage was full by 7:00.
2) The show started promptly at 7pm, but it wasn't CYHSY. An unannounced opener played.

great photos. fyi, Devothcka will be playing Irving Plaza tomorrow nite, the 15th for CMJ. then they'll be back again on 10/6 at the Symphony Space with Lhasa and on 10/28 at Webster Hall w/Dresden Dolls. Catch them now - New York is a long way from Denver!
