I heard it leaked... I have no idea how this site does it, but Scenestars has the new Sigur Ros album in streaming format.

they seemed to have some deal with V2 when they had the White Stripes one up.

don't they just have people that write for mags that get advances who then upload it on their servers to stream? this album definitely has leaked. seen it posted in a few places.

I guess I meant I don't know how they get away with it.

oh ok. i figure they'll get asked to take it down. maybe i'm wrong. i don't think they ever got asked to take down the white stripes. maybe streams aren't such a big deal?

I heard that they were asked to take the white stripes down until the day before the release of the album, and then they were allowed to stream it.

I think they've done some sanctioned streams and some unsanctioned. My guess would be this is unsanctioned. I'd never do it personally, but whatever.

The Court Has Ruled So Enter the Geeks
By JON PARELES
The Supreme Court's unanimous decision Tuesday in the Grokster case means trouble and potentially ruinous judgments against commercial file-sharing services, but it has also established a new standard for software innovation: don't ask, don't sell.
That is, don't ask for or gather information on what users are doing with the software you write, and don't sell ads that profit from access to copyrighted material.
The court found that the file-sharing companies Grokster and Streamcast could be sued for copyright infringement because they offered marketing and technical advice that clearly induced their customers to share files illegally, so the companies could attract larger numbers of users and thus more advertising.
But the court did not give the movie and recording businesses much ammunition to attack the Robin Hoods of the Internet: those software geeks and culture fans who really just want to share. They are online right now building Web sites that don't make a dime and spending hours writing and editing "mp3 blogs" - Web page collections of downloadable songs. They hook people up, basically because they can and because people want access to art.

the second track is bananas....

yeah, i don't think there's any secret how it's done. and streaming all the big guns like coldplay avoids legal trouble, plus nobody has really gone through the trouble of busting their chops about it (see: white stripes). but the whole thing just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, in that it seems averse to the original purpose of mp3 blogs. sharing great music, sometimes surprises by big names, but mostly new and exciting unheard sounds. instead of just, throwing up the big names, very much regardless of the music, where all you are is just another co-opted cog in the hype machine. i feel like, in the land of mp3 blogs, scenestars is walmart... paving over what was original and exciting so that the major labels can glide right in, losing the intent along the way. but i'm sure if they keep it up they'll be the biggest name of them all, riding on names like sigur ros, death cab, and the white stripes. oh well. listening to the new sigur ros in advance would spoil the experience for me, but i guess it's a matter of personal preference.

i have been reading scenestars for a while now and it seems like whenever they do something before everyone else, the same 10 people come out and start complaining -- usually on other people's blogs and never on scenestars. i guess it's because geeks always get upset when they're not the first at something so they try to discredit the source because they feel snubbed. i say good for scenestars, i like this record. and cody, if you wanna wait a few more weeks, fine. i just advanced ordered it because i've heard it and i like it.

I'm sure if Cody, et. al. would like to discuss this in person, they can attend the "Credibility in Criticism: Responsibilities of the Music Media in the Age of Blogs and MP3s" panel at CMJ. I'll be happy to field your questions there in person.

god damn yo, that shit is fuckin neat!
The second track makes me wanna wet myself.
i heart Sigur Ros.
If they were as great as i believe them to be, they'll do a live show someday where Tom Cruise comes out for a track and sings a song with them. And than Katie Holmes will jump on stage in excitement and dance with the band while everybody on stage is filled with glee.
When Tom is done, he'll give a high five to Jónsi, Kjartan, and Orri, and then he'll jump back into the crowd to wild screams.
(haaarrr, haarrr, haarrr)

not complaining, just voicing opinion. i have enjoyed some of the stuff the site has done in the past. speaking of, i appreciate that panel... sounds like a really great idea. i guess mp3 blogs are in that difficult birthing/growing pains period that every new idea or technology goes through, where the groundrules and guiding concepts are up to vast interpretations. personal preference. it's what makes this country great. keep on keeping on.
