Pirate Night with Sufjan Stevens | Pic

To differentiate five back-to-back shows at Bowery Ballroom, Sufjan Stevens instituted a theme each night.
Sunday night (August 21, 2005 & night 3) was pirate night.

Arrgh! Welcome to Pirate Night.

One Louder was there Friday night. Wes was there Friday too. Stereogum was there Saturday night" I forget the order, but there's also fake accident night, and the last night is homecoming (formal attire).

From the opening chant about the 50 states to the kitschy cheers, I thought last night was awesome.

Tomorrow night is fake moustache night, I think.

Actually Saturday night was "Fake an injury" night and Tuesday night is "Prom night" or "Formal night" (he called it both).

I thought the Saturday show was o.k. There was definetly a lack of energy from the band. However I found a good deal of the preformance really smart.

Well, he plays writes/plays/sings really beautiful "folk" music that gets great reviews by Pitchfork and others. Two of his best albums are concept albums. One is all about Michigan, and the most recent is all about Illinois. He also works those themes into his clever stage shows.

He's been pretty popular for over a year, but got more hype than ever with the new album. I believe Illinois is currently the highest rated album of the year on Pitchfork. He also got a plug on MTV. All this caused him to sell out five nights in a row at Bowery Ballroom. Previously he stuck to smaller venues like Southpaw, Mercury Lounge, and Knitting Factory.

Last night was show three of five.

Friday night was turn your shirt around night (like Kriss Kross). I was drunk enough to do it, then I realized I was the only one who did it, so I quickly turned my shirt back around.
