The Underrated Band Post
What bands/artists/performers are underrated or don't get enough coverage on this site? Who should I/people be checking out?

My Morning Jacket! These guys have been a great band for a long time and do not get the attention they deserve when "Z" drops people will realize what they have been missing and will expierence the best live show around!

I'm obsessed with Blocked Numbers. Quality from beginning to end. They were incredible when I saw em at Northsix. Can't wait for them to come back to NYC.

some british ones:
Arctic Monkeys
The Cribs
The Paddingtons
Special Needs
Art Brut
Posted by katie | August 9, 2005 3:02 PM
I despise Art Brut. The Cribs are decent.
Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2005 3:04 PM
Have you heard of Bloc Party? They're going to be huge.
Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2005 3:09 PM
yeah Art Brut is love/hate
was the bloc party joke targeted at me? cause i can smaller, i wasn't sure how well the british ones are known:
Black Wire
The Mardous
Metro Riots
Chineapples
Rosemary
The Rocks
Crash Convention
Posted by katie | August 9, 2005 3:13 PM
'can *go smaller' is what i meant to write there. sigh.
I'd have to say that The Cribs, Special Needs, and Black Wire are the best of the bunch probably. But all of those have their merits.

, Emok, Other Passengers, Hopewell, among others...
Well, most of these acts aren't necessarily new, but they're still great local acts.
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum isn't a local act, but going to see them live this past June at Tonic just blew me away!

final fantasy. owen pallett is an amazing songwriter, and he only gets coverage when he's working or touring with the arcade fire. "has a good home" is possibly my second favorite album of the year, and easily the most underrated, and he does a wicked cover of "peach, plum, pear". i prefer it to the m. ward version.
more bands:
crystal skulls
math and physics club
aqueduct
and some unsigned seattle singer/songwriter project called fresh cherries from yakima (www.myspace.com/freshcherriesfromyakima)
Posted by douglasmartin | August 9, 2005 4:16 PM
Yes! glad to see other peeps agree about crystal skulls.
About a month ago I would have agreed about Aqueduct, but now that Jaguar commercial kind of changes things. He/they are getting massive exposure with that, which he/they deserve. I Sold Gold is addictive.

Glad to see others have posted it. ny bloggers have totally slept on it- except for Jasper because I think he may have turned me on to them- a way back. Devotchka I think are from Denver. got the record, saw them play with M. Ward at the Bowery, and was crying by the third song. This band makes something besides music. poster above called it out of control. I don't know what it is- but it left me in tears.

Be Careful Little Hands (lush pop ballads a la Coldplay, from Philly)
Alec K. Redfearn & The Eyesores( beautiful prog with lots of accordion from Providence)
The Ambitious Orchestra (NYC's only 20 person rock band featuring orchestral instrumentation)
Reverend Glasseye (American Gothic gospel cabaret punk from Boston)
Mahi Mahi (noise and insanity from Providence)
The Vitamen (now defunct humorous indie pop from NYC)
The Negatones (progsploitation! from NYC)
The Flesh (Dark indie pop with bling bling leanings from NYC...not so good live, but great recordings)
....btw, I love The Harlem Shakes but they are getting an absolutely fair amount of hype.

Camille wrote the following:
"The Vitamen (now defunct humorous indie pop from NYC"
Are you sure about that? They played with my friend's band Hope Star and Browning (another great underrated band, incidentally; they're from New Brunswick, NJ and could fit in very well with the whole indie-folk thing) at a club in Philly less than 2 weeks ago.
