The Vandals played CBGB | RIP "Stevo" Jensen
Stevo Jensen singing for The Vandals

The Vandals played a CBGB benefit show on August 20, 2005. Steve "Stevo" Jensen died the same week.
Former Vandals lead singer Steven "Stevo" Jensen passed away at his home on the island of Maui last weekend due to causes as yet unknown. Jensen sang for the Vandals from 1980 through 1984, appearing on the band's first two full-lengths, Peace Through Vandalism and When In Rome Do As The Vandals before being replaced by current vocalist Dave Quackenbush." Mike Neuman was at the CBGB show...
"I saw The Vandals at CBGB on Saturday night. It was pretty packed, but I don't think it was sold out. Jerry's Kids opened. Never listened to them before. They all looked like they were in their mid-40's. The Vandals finally came out and opened with...Cafe 405? I think it was Cafe 405. I can't remember exactly. Anyway the crowd was really, really fun. They asked for a show of hands of who had seen them last time they played CBGB...a few people raised their hands. Then they asked how many people had been alive last time they played CBGB (April of 1987). I can't believe how much energy the band had after 24 years of playing cheesy (yet loveable) pop-punk. Oh, and Josh Freese was drumming, so that was really cool. Here are the songs that I know they definitely played, in no order..."

Jerry's Kids are an old Boston hardcore band from the early '80s. They put out a couple of albums (incluing "Is This My World?" featuring the great anthem "I Don't Belong") on X-Claim (the same label that put out the long out-of-print and very hard to find but heavily-bootlegged 1st 2 SSD albums) and then on Taang.
It's really cool to see the bands that have come out of retirement to play these benefits. I'm looking forward to the show on 9/10 (Circle Jerks, Adolescents, 45 Grave, Zero Boys; should be amazing) and I'm thinking about seeing Flipper on Sunday night as well, though I'll be going to shows both tonight (Ted Leo/Les Savy Fav) and tomorrow night (Of Montreal) so I'll see if I'm up for it.

Its a shame you saw the imposter Vandals and not the band that was fronted by the late, brilliant Stevo. How punk rock is it to sue your former bandmates for SIX MILLION DOLLARS?? This stress no doubt contributed to Stevo's early demise. Its about as punk rock as CBGB's landlords . . . Be Aware.
This was from MTV News April 3, 2003:
Members of the Vandals are suing each other over the credits of a song used in the Vin Diesel movie "XXX." Former members Steve "Stevo" Jensen and Steve "Human" Pfaufer dispute that current bassist Joe Escalante owns the sole credit on "Anarchy Burger (Hold the Government)," which he gave the movie permission to use. Escalante filed a $6 million suit against his former bandmates in Los Angeles Superior Court, charging interference with a contract, while Jensen and Pfaufer are looking into filing a countersuit. A settlement hearing is scheduled in Los Angeles for June 27. ...

good job Incaraq!The truth yes!!!
I(and some others)got booted off the Vandals message board due to our honesty in this totally Un-punk situation.Stevo IS AND WILL BE A TRUE VANDAL!In Stevo's honor,I spent a good deal of time putting an artistic shirt together for my big adventure this last weekend at the Sunset Junction in the streets of Los Angeles.Nothing like walking around at 7:30 at night with my drawing of "Peace Through Vandalism" art W/ stevo R.I.P. on the back walking through and jumping around to CHAKA KAHN!!!Let me tell you main...I could read people minds in their eyes..and of course it was not a pleasant sight...Just the way Stevo would have wanted it.Those who did verbalize their opinion:well...
Every single comment was encouraging!!!
once again to Stevo..
a TRUE ORIGINAL
May you live on inside us few true...
PUNKS!!!!
Karma does indeed come around Joe
Thank you too Hope!
and as you say:

Thanks a lot for the compliment, Swildo, though again it's incarag with a "g", not a "q". I grew up in the punk/hardcore scene, as you could probably tell. Anyway, I completely agree with your take on The Vandals. I don't think they've made a decent record in over 20 years (though in fairness I only heard a few from the '90s and they were generic pop-punk with bad humor) and the first 2 are by far the best. I saw them in '91 opening for Bad Religion and the long defunct City Gardens in Trenton, NJ and they were absolutely awful, sub-Chili Peppers quasi-funk garbage. It was one of the first punk shows I ever saw and even then at the green age of 16, I was still disappointed with their performance. At the time, I didn't know that it wasn't the original lineup, but I found out years later.
As for Joe Escalante, I find it interesting that he's one of the few prominent Republicans who's been involved in the punk scene for a long time. Make what you will of that, but regardless of his politics, suing Stevo was definitely an awful move.

Stevo Jensen was my friend on Maui. He was a cool cat that deserves to be remembered as just that. The Vandals that are playing now are mediocre posers that cant hold a candle to the real deal! Rock on my brother!

That "Swilldo" post sounds like someone who smoked about 10 bong loads too many.
Wouldn't it be better to deal with intelligence rather than the brain-damaged?

Joe Escalante is a plagiarist scumbag who sold the early Vandals' lyrics and music to Sony and Adidas (and now Jackass 2), claiming sole authorship of songs that he didn't write.
