Thursday @ CBGB (Benefit), NYC | pics

Thursday @ CBGB
Thursday @ CBGB

I was a Thursday fan. Full Collapse was my album. I last saw them live a few weeks before War All the Time was released, and I remember loving the show. Jonah Matranga (Onelinedrawing, Gratitude) opened and joined them on stage (he also contributed to their album that was about to come out). Fast forward two years. I'm psyched they're playing a CBGB benefit. I get tickets, and throw on Full Collapse to prepare. Nostalgia factor aside, I couldn't get in to it at all. Was I angrier then? Has my musical taste changed? Why does the screaming suddenly sound funny? Am I older? Wiser?...

The show was still great, though I found myself only getting excited for the hits. I'm always happy if a crowd is lively and I get to leave a show sweaty. They played some new songs (off the album they're currently recording) which did nothing for me, but the crowd seemed generally into them.

What's interesting about your comments is that I feel almost the exact same way about Thursday. I don't mean to name-drop, but Geoff Rickly (their singer) is an old acquaintance of mine from college and I remember when he gave me their 1st demo when I ran into him on campus one day. To be honest, I didn't think much of it, so I didn't really follow their career for its 1st 3 years or so. Anyway, fast forward to August 2001. I'm living in Hoboken at the time and one day I walked by Maxwells and noticed that Thursday is on the bill that night. My friend who's a bouncer there got me in to the sold-out show and I have to say that I was totally knocked-out by their set. So much energy, the crowd singing-along, just like all the hardcore shows I saw when I was a teenager.

I bought "Full Collapse" at the show and liked it well enough at the time, though I only really loved 3 or 4 songs from it. 2 years later, I heard "War All the Time" at a record store and it didn't do a thing for me. I haven't heard the new one yet or seen them since then, but similarly, I just don't think I'm that angry anymore and that's a good thing, though I still respect what they do and everything.

thursday was the band that got me into music, and as such, they'll always have a special place in my heart.

since first hearing them (and have my ears opened to stuff that wasn't on the radio) my tastes have broadened and deepened, but when i found out they were playing cbgb's i was pretty pumped. unfortunately, i missed out on getting tickets, so i was a bit let down. i did catch the show on the live webcam, which was definitely better than nothing.

but in the years since still hearing them, they haven't lost anything in translation, at least not for me. full collapse is probably still one of my all time favorite albums, no matter what people say, or how much flak i get for it in more 'musically elite' snobbery circles like college radio jockeys who have nothing better to do than read SPIN and NME all day.

in any case, i still love this band, and probably always will, even if at some point it's out of nostalgia only.

thanks for the pictures, and the great blog.

I saw them at starland ballroom in december and the show was amazing. They still have the raw energy that they had a few years back. They are a band that really cares about their fans as well. Wish I could have gone to this show.

I was at that show also. I personally thought it was amazing. I gave so much the first song I thought I would collapse. Your pictures are pretty cool, I can see my arm and my friend's arm and head in a lot of them.
