Summerstage Hurricane Benefit Reviews
If you weren't at Webster Hall last night, maybe you were at Summerstage for the hurricane relief benefit show.
Amphibologist just reminded me that Drive By Truckers weren't the only ones who played Webster Hall and Summerstage in one night. J Mascis played both shows too. "...and then things get crazy: lou reed walks on with his band with laurie anderson off to the side...the band that featured. dr. john and allen toussaint came out next, and the place went nuts. dr. john on guitar (!!), and toussiant laying some beautiful piano work..."

SPIN 20th Anniversary Party Reviews
Here's my review: I had so much to do last minute to get ready for Montreal (which I'm leaving for any second), I never made it to Webster Hall last night for SPIN's 20th Anniversary party.
According to Chris, J Mascis and DMC from Run-DMC made surprise appearances, Lady Sovereign's set was pushed back, and Public Enemy was great.

Across the Narrows Set Times | Listen Outside
1. Set times are posted for the Across the Narrows festival happening this weekend. (thx Jonathan)
2. Quick Tip: Keyspan Park in Coney Island is like Summerstage in Central Park. You can you can hear the concert outside the venue. In Central Park you get nature. In Coney Island you get Coney Island. Right next door to the ball park is a bar called Peggy O'Neils. You can sit there and drink outside (and for instance listen to the Pixies from 8:40-10:10 PM on Saturday).

KUDU, Nublu, & a Deli Magazine Show
I've started writing posts about KUDU so many times. The only thing harder for me than finishing a post about them, has been actually seeing them live. It's partly because their Tuesday night residency at Nublu happens so freakin' late. The last time I went (after Pelican Picnic) they still weren't on by 1AM so I left. (I think they usually go on by 11 though).
If you don't remember, Nublu gets credit for launching the career of Brazilian Girls. Word on the street is that KUDU will be their next superstars. Two more rumors: They sound like Siouxsie & they're better live than on record.
Sometimes they play other places, like this Saturday (October 1, 2005) when they hit Scenic in honor of the latest issue of Deli Magazine. Other performers at the multiple venue "Alphabet City" event include Ezra Reich, Gym Class, Elodie O, Beat Pharmacy, Die Romantik and The Two Man Gentlemen Band. Get more info and tickets. As usual, I'll miss them.

* Coolfer wrote almost the exact same thing I did, but shorter. We even both used the phrase "word on the street." Scary.

Walking Concert @ Sin-e, NYC | CMJ | pics
Back to CMJ Day 4 (Saturday, Sept 17, 2005)... After Chad VanGaalen's set at the SubPop showcase I left Bowery Ballroom to take a break. Then I stopped at Sin-e to check out Walking Concert before going back to Bowery to see the last few songs of Rogue Wave followed by Wolf Parade (which was followed by Towers of London).

Pop Montreal 2005 Happening Now | Antony & Stuff too
Pop Montreal is to Montreal what CMJ is to NYC...I think. I'll sort of find out tomorrow because Montreal is where I'll be. Thursday night I'll catch Antony & The Johnsons with CocoRosie at Cabaret La Tulipe (sounds fancy, I know). After that I'm not sure what I'll do...it's SUPPOSED to be a vacation. I won't see Interpol while I'm there (they play at the same time as Antony somewhere else in Montreal), but fortunately/unfortunately I'll be home in time to see them at Webster Hall Sunday night (yes, I'll miss Across the Narrows).
"You would have to work pretty hard to avoid Pop Montreal this week. In its fourth year, the indie music festival is bigger than ever." [The Gazette]
"A few of the artists that will be blessing the jewel of Quebec include Enon, Black Mountain, Interpol, Stars, Ted Leo/Pharmacists, Busdriver, Beck, Coco Rosie, Antony and the Johnsons, Chromeo, The Dirtbombs, Weird War, Foxy Brown, Strung Out, Architecture in Helsinki, Kings of Leon, and Alex Chilton's new best buddies, The Posies. Now please keep in mind that this list is in no way exhaustive. There are quite a few more bands playing over the festival's five nights, lots of which, I'm sure, are very, very popular in Canada but that these American eyes of mine just don't recognize." Art Brut Live Reviews, Tour & Tix on Sale
"Art Brut are without doubt a band that need to be seen live, and I can assure you they’re worth seeing… and worth seeing soon." [Skiddle]
"In theory it shouldn't work but as a live spectacle Art Brut are about as exciting as it gets at the moment, and long after the band have packed their gear away and headed back down the M1, Pelham Street is awake with cries of 'Art Brut - Top Of The Pops!'" [Drowned in Sound]
"A night in the company of Art Brut is never anything less than eventful." [NME]

'Ready Art Brute?' he deadpans for each song before launching into art-punk tirades which often sound suspiciously like the one which preceded it. The ironic nods and post-modern winks occasionally grate, but when a band has more cheek than a toilet roll advert it becomes clear that people need this timely kick up the arse. [Drowned in Sound]
"They are, perhaps, Park Life-era Blur without the preening and sneering; the Fall for beginners, Pulp for a new disenfranchised generation, with a taste of Magazine's feline tension and a wallop of Nirvana's anthemic surge. Most of all, they are absolutely nothing but Art Brut." [Guardian]
Tickets are now on sale for Art Brut's November 10th show at Mercury Lounge in NYC at Ticketweb where tickets are also available for Brooklyn, NJ, Ontario, and Southern California.

The Rapture are back | Shows @ Bowery & Crash Mansion
"After nearly two years of non-stop touring in support of 2003's Echoes LP, the Rapture have begun writing material for the follow-up. 'We have 25 things that are all pretty good.'" [The Village Voice]
"Yesterday we put you on to the current happening of the Stills, but the other band who's whereabouts were presently unknown was the Rapture. Though there were scattered updates about a month ago, actual music hasn't really been forthcoming until now, with the Rapture monkeys contributing a remix on the new Supersystem 12-inch for 'Miracle'" [Fader]

De Novo Dahl @ Cake Shop, NYC | CMJ | pics

De Novo Dahl came out of nowhere (Nashville actually) with an awesome sounding, and visually entertaining, set Saturday afternoon during CMJ at Cake Shop (September 17, 2005). They were the first band to play the free show thrown by SpinArt and Startime.
Listen to & Download songs on their website.

* As NashvilleZine points out, this show was even highlighted by Tricia McDermott at CBS News
* fraggleuprising saw them at Lincoln Center and said they were incredible
* Tale of Two Cities asks the obvious question. Were they wearing underwear?

This was the first band I saw on CMJ Day 4. Towers of London was the last one.

Ted Nugent vs. Vegans
"Ted Nugent is not an evolution guy. This became apparent recently when Mr. Nugent, the 57-year-old rocker, huntsman and N.R.A. board member, brandished a blood-drenched liver he had just pulled from a freshly slain deer. He used the moment, during filming of his forthcoming reality show on the Outdoor Life Network, 'Wanted: Ted or Alive,' to explain the meaning of life to five contestants who were in various states of awe and nausea." Dylan | Icon or "Self-regarding old money-machine?"
"The involvement of Scorsese, another monstrously over-celebrated talent who did his best work 30 years ago – has anyone got to the end of Gangs of New York without being paid to do so? – is symbolism enough. But the hyperbole involved in this transatlantic, public-spirited, nearer-my-God-to-thee Dylanfest, as if venerating some living western saint, marks a high-watermark of pretention. The whole concept is flabby with self-congratulation. At the heart of the Dylan affliction, of course, is the sly old fox himself, he who has been playing games with his adoring public ever since he first picked up a guitar." [The Herald]

The Ponys & 2005 Atlantic Antic, Brooklyn, NY | pics

I haven't been to every street fair in NYC, but I feel like the annual Atlantic Antic might be the best one. There's probably 6-10 live music stops along the route that runs down Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, NY.

The highlight this year for indie rock fans was the stage outside Magnetic Field. Bands like Detachment Kit, the Hong Kong and the Ponys played for free to fans and random passerbys.

After seeing the White Stripes in Coney Island the night before, I arrived just in time on Sunday (September 25, 2005) to catch The Ponys' full set and spend the rest of the day walking around.

Meg White's Gawker Stalker
The following paragraph was sent to Gawker by a reader (NOT ME)...
"Meg White from the White Stripes came into my favorite dive bar, Mona's, in the East Village on Friday night (9/23) around midnight with a group of longhaired hipsters and some tall dude wearing a black hat (sadly, not Jack White). They took a table in the back and nobody really bothered them, but my friend and I did chat her up while in line for the bathroom (she initially tried to cut in line). I was surprised that she was taller than me, though both of us were in heels, and she had this cute quality to her. But long flowy black hair aside, there was virtually nothing recognizable about her. My (male) friend tried to buy her a drink after our bathroom line encounter, but she had just started on her Jameson and seemed complacent, so he bought her friend a Heineken and retreated without pressing her for the backstage passes to their Saturday night show (in Coney Island) that we had sent him over to weasel out of her. Post-concert note: she looks ten times hotter about 100 feet away, under stage lighting, wielding drumsticks." [This & more stalking @ Gawker]

"What’s the best way to describe the new album from Parisian future rappers TTC? Like the Sex Pistols jamming with Daft Punk in French? The soundtrack to the victory of machines over humans as directed by Luc Besson? The funniest, thuggiest outpouring of nerd posturing in the history of hip hop, ever (and still in French)? Or maybe as all of these things (in French)." [Big Dada Press Release]

* Currently the #7 album of the year @ Cokemachineglow
..."the next act was TTC, a French hip-hop act who were excellent. They mixed up hip-hop, breakbeat and some dancehall sounds. One of the (three) rappers was the funniest frontman I've seen in ages - a really sweaty fat white guy in a tattered pink T-shirt who was going fucking nuts onstage." [Random Musings]

"Showtime! Just when it seemed impossible to stuff another crazily fun live show into the month of September, we got out the shoehorn and jammed TTC into the Knitting Factory for Thursday the 29th. Thats close to two weeks away - more than enough time to brush up on your reading, pick up copies of Batards Sensibles and Cuizinier's Pour Les Filles mixtape, and see just why we're so excited for these dudes to finally hit up NYC again." Random Eugene Mirman Encounter
Late Friday night (Sept 23, 2005) I was walking down 11th Street in Manhattan when I came upon a camera crew outside Rififi. They were filming recent Sub Pop-signee Eugene Mirman who actually performs at Rififi almost every Wednesday night (the "Invite them Up" show). He was talking about his love for the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. I assume it was for the DVD the Trachtenburgs are making. As usual, every word coming out of Eugene's mouth was hilarious. Indie Bands Closer to Mainstream | The Next Death Cab
"Death Cab's fifth album, "Plans," has sold 128,000 copies in two weeks after debuting at No. 4. Modest Mouse's "Good News for People Who Love Bad News" has gone platinum. Last November, singer-songwriter Connor Oberst's band, Bright Eyes, had two songs top the Billboard singles chart — knocking out a duet by Usher and Alicia Keys and sending the indie rock world into a tailspin.....
...If there's one band iconic of the scene, it's Arcade Fire. Hailing from Montreal, a bastion of indiedom, their debut, "Funeral," blew away critics and has sold over 200,000 discs.
"I think they're like the best band, period," says Carl Newman, frontman of the New Pornographers, echoing the feelings of many indie rockers....
...So are majors now trying to sign "the next Death Cab"?
"If all of a sudden, that becomes the flavor of the month and all the labels want to sign a band like Death Cab for Cutie, then we're onto the next cycle of alternative rock and it's dead as soon as they start it," says radio host Harcourt. "So I hope not." [Yahoo News]
"The buzz even persuaded producers of "The O.C.," which is known for its indie rock soundtracks, to ask Clap Your Hands to perform on the show. The band turned it down. Too much popularity, after all, can diminish one's credibility." [NY Times] (via Kathrynyu)

Seu Jorge @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC | pics (part 3)

The Seu Jorge show at Bowery Ballroom on September 11, 2005 was like a play in multiple acts. The first and 6th were solo Jorge covering Bowie in Portuguese. The 2nd and 4th were Jorge and band playing Seu Jorge songs. The 3rd was an interactive stand-up percussion routine featuring the members of Jorge's band. The 5th was Jorge standing for the first time as he recited a mix of Portuguese and English spoken word to a background of music. I couldn't really understand what he was saying (except for a bit about New Orleans and 9/11), but the actor was able to make it moving nonetheless. Given the many parts of the performance, I couldn't help but separate the pictures into multiple posts. This is part three.

Halloween w/ The Mountain Goats
Everyone's talking about a secret Mountain Goats show at Knitting Factory in NYC on Halloween. If it was secret, they must of un-secreted it because Ticketweb and Knitting Factory's site both clearly list "The Mountain Goats, Grizzly Bear, The Prayers and Tears of Aurther Digby."
Tickets still on sale for the GrizzlyBear-less show at Bowery Ballroom on Oct. 29 too.
Tickets also amazingly still on sale for the Grizzly bear benefit show at Bowery on Oct. 3rd.

Q and not U played their Final Shows
"So I finally had the "existential vacation" I had been attempting at. Thursday and Friday was the last 2 q and not u shows which were so amazing. Today was the Operation Cease fire protest in DC. they said 300,000 people marched today. The Bellrays are amazing." [emptycalm's livejournal]
"q and not u's last song played together was "Soft Pyramids"." [lost's livejournal]
"So. This is what all the blogeoise skipped Q & Not U's last NY shows for? I don't know who you bloggaz get your scenester marching orders from, but something's awry. At least diversify a little. If Gothamist Jen sends five of you to Maroon 5 or Taking Back Sunday, at least one of you should break ranks and check something fresh and fleeting. Or maybe I'm missing something; does Anton's urine have some euphoric effect as it drizzles down your cochleae? Well, at any rate, it was a terrific show from an oddly underrated band going out on the way up. [A commenter in my BJM post]

Biafra, Baez, etc...performed Against the War
"The march spilled onto the Washington Monument grounds for the 'Operation Ceasefire Concert' and rally hosted by United for Peace and Justice. The scene was a bit of a flashback to the 1960s, with Joan Baez singing 'Blowin’ in the Wind' and Wayne Kramer of the MC5 strutting with his guitar, followed by the hard-rocking soul of the Bellrays. Emcee Jello Biafra cracked jokes holding a cardboard sign: 'Make Pizza Not War.'" [Village Voice]

CMJ Hurricane Relief Auction
"To assist with relief efforts in the affected areas, CMJ Network has begun to compile a massive online auction of musical equipment, t-shirts, show tickets, celebrity meet-and-greets, limited edition releases and other music-related memorabilia. The auction, held via eBay.com, will consist entirely of donated items from a wide-ranging variety of major labels, independent labels, artists, management companies, talent agencies and others. 100% of the proceeds will go to the American Red Cross and various local and regional charities, specifically those meant to help both musicians and music business colleagues affected by the tragedy."

Carlo, Adam Shore, Dig!, Dandy Warhols Tour, Tix
ANTON NEWCOMBE & CARLO MCCORMICK @ PIANOS

I hardly watch TV and movies anymore. It's no surprise then that I first saw the documentary (Dig!) about Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols for the first time last night. It successfully tells the story of rival bands who love each other. It gives you an inside look at the music industry. I liked it.
People, that know the band members personally, provide commentary throughout the movie. One in particular is Carlo McCormick from PAPER magazine. If you were at the Brian Jonestown show at Pianos Tuesday night (Sept 20, 2005), you'll remember him as the soft-spoken white-haired guy who tried to get Anton to play a song. He even promised sexual favors. That's him under the Anton-invaded sound-booth in the picture above.
It's also worth pointing out one other main character. Adam Shore is the TVT Records A&R rep that signed Brian Jonestown Masscare. If you didn't realize it already, Adam went on to manage VICE Records and popularize the phrase "indie yuppie."
The Dandy Warhols (who give a shout-out to vegans in Bohemian Like You") are touring (Webster Hall included). Tickets are on presale (password: Odditorium). All dates and info at their site. Their last NYC was at CBGB for CMJ last week. Jen reviewed it for Gothamist.

TREMBLING BLUE STARS (UK)
Spawned from the illustrious Field Mice, Bobby Wratten's heartfelt ensemble are playing their last ever live shows as Trembling Blue Stars. =Over the course of five subsequent albums – including Broken By Whispers (2000) and Alive To Every Smile (2001) on Sub Pop, Trembling Blue Stars have become as beloved as Belle & Sebatian or The Clientele, indie-pop darlings and legends.
THE SHARP THINGS (NYC)
In the style of Burt Bacharach, Stephen Merritt and Belle & Sebastian, The Sharp Things continues their journey of orchestral pop with Foxes & Hounds. Perry Serpa leads the 10 plus member band as singer-songwriter and pianist to boot. His voice is unabashedly susceptible. Serpa's lyrics are filled with a bit of darkness and self-destruction.
ANNIE HAYDEN
Annie Hayden used to be in a band called Spent. They made quiet, jangly indie-pop for Merge Records from 1995 through 1997 then broke up in 1998 in unhappy acceptance of their own commercial inviability. A small tragedy because they were among the finest bands in their particular little genre, forming a sort of stylistic bridge between labelmates the Magnetic Fields and Superchunk. Annie's new solo record is out on Merge in September 2005.
KAWAII (BERGEN, NORWAY)
Equally at home on shelves containing Ladytron and Belle & Sebastian records, Kawaii, a cute duo from Norway, make lo-fi electro-pop with a shiny veneer for the IKEA generation. Bouncing their way through 13 smart pop songs on their debut CD (Shelflife), they merge charming male and female vocals over crisp electro-beats, toy keyboards, organs and jazzy guitars that will keep you dancing all night long.

Wolf Parade @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC | CMJ | pics

Wolf Parade weren't the headliner of the Sub Pop CMJ showcase at Bowery Ballroom on Saturday night (September 17. 2005), but they were the band that everyone was there to see. "The Next Arcade Fire" went on around 12:30 AM - after Rogue Wave and before The Constantines who closed the night. Chad VanGaalen was the first to play over 5 hours earlier.
"Clearly, judging from the now large crowd, this band was who the kids wanted to see, and at least to these ears, they didn't disappoint in the slightest. Despite being seemingly wasted., guitarist/lead vocalist #2 Dan Boecker was extremely amusing, contorting his emaciated frame on each song while only committing the amateurish sin of constantly telling the crowd how drunk the band was in between tunes. Keyboard player/lead vocalist #1 Spencer Krug seemed to be more together, despite his displeasure on having to play on a gigantic rented electric piano that he claims to have never seen in his life." [Statute of Frauds]

"They also never used their real name on stage but only refered to themselves as “the queen haters from Canada”. However their sound did sufer from their poor choice to rent equiment instead of bring their own." [Who's Driving the Bus]
"Wolf Parade, HOLY SHIT. Actually, they sound like plenty of other bands, but they sound like them SO MUCH BETTER, and WITH A THEREMIN." [this is 80's hair metal]

"It was almost as if Wolf Parade was trying to blow it. One member stumbles on stage with a billowing joint in his mouth and wouldn't stop babbling about how he is seeing ghosts. Another wouldn't shut the fuck up about how drunk he was, acting like a College Freshmen trying to impress a Senior during rush week......But then they started playing music and oh my fucking god did they deliver..." [Central Village]
"They put on a decent show though the first two songs has me guessing for reasons as to why the capacity filled Bowery was flipping out over this band. It was sloppy, not in a good way, non memorable, and just kind of bland. They did improve and I enjoyed the last couple of songs that had a little more structure and stand out parts to them." [gilmoreboy]

Though Pitchfork only gave their recent EP a 7.1, they hinted at something bigger to come. "It's difficult reviewing crumbs when you've already gorged yourself on the main course, but peering into the future offers the benefit of hindsight, which allows me to say now with some degree of confidence that Wolf Parade should have a pretty sick autumn."
Yeti Don't Dance and Central Village are betting on the score for the upcoming full length.

Who will be "The Next Arcade Fire?"
THE ARCADE FIRE

"It's that time again! Today, every stripe of music industry hanger-on (including quite a few from this very website) is flocking to New York City for the megatravaganzapalooza known as the CMJ Music Marathon, four days and nights of bands, schmoozing, panels, schmoozing, films, schmoozing and schmoozing. It's simultaneously orgasmic and maddening, with all these bands you want to see all playing at the same time in all five boroughs and New Jersey, and all these secret after-parties in mysterious Brooklyn lofts, and all these publicists buying you free drinks but not shutting up about The Next Arcade Fire." [Pitchfork]
"Being heralded as the next Arcade Fire could be a touch overwhelming, but Stars share more than just a hometown with the Montreal chamber rock phenomenon." [Guardian]
"If you're in NYC i would like to suggest you go see ManMan tonight at Mercury lounge at 10. They're gonna be the next Arcade Fire ... they don't have songs as good as AF, but the show will be one of those things that you'll be stoked you caught. They're like crazy pirates." [Ultragrrrl]
WOLF PARADE

"Almost as long as Funeral has been out, we've heard that Wolf Parade are more or less destined to become the next Arcade Fire. A bold statement, and not one that I'm sure I agree with just yet. Which isn't to say that I don't like Wolf Parade. I do. A lot. I've enjoyed all their eps, and their full length debut, Apologies to the Queen Mary, makes good on the promise of those eps and will likely find a place on many best-of-the-year lists. But the next Arcade Fire? That's just... I dunno. Is it simply because they're from Montreal, too? Because the two bands are buddies? The comparison just seems so arbitrary. Regardless, Wolf Parade are well on their way to proving themselves a fantastic band in their own right." [kop e kat]

"The whiff of Pacific Northwest nostalgia more or less ends there, which is great because we wouldn't want anything else to confuse anyone eager to crown Wolf Parade the next Arcade Fire. "Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts" owes much more to Bowie-in-Berlin than to any of Wolf Parade's Montreal peers. And the echo chamber vocals on "I'll Believe in Anything" would be enough to bar the group from attending Win Butler's fancy-dress tea parties." [Seattle Weekly]

"Everyone’s stumbling over themselves trying to anoint Wolf Parade the next Arcade Fire... something that should make their upcoming gig – as Arcade Fire’s opening act – interesting. But the Parade – despite being a group of energetic kids from Montreal with an energetic stage act – marches to a totally different drummer." [heartonastick]
* Listen to Wolf Parade at Myspace
"AM: It’s funny. I read something about Wolf Parade that said, “Is this the next Arcade Fire?” So it’s like a rating system now. Now if Wolf Parade becomes as popular as [Arcade Fire], it will be, “Who’s going to be the next Wolf Parade?” And that’s not cool. That has nothing to do with rock ‘n’ roll." [said Antonin Marquis of We are Wolves to Prefix]
* Listen to Wolf Parade's CBC Radio 3 Session
"PS Wolf Parade is the next Arcade Fire." [Bumpershine]
WINTERSLEEP

"A blog I visit quite regularly had a recent headline: “Wintersleep – the Next Arcade Fire!?!?!?” Wait now --- are we done with Bloc Party and Wolf Parade already? Wow. I (and Scott Herren, Colin Meloy, and Britt Daniel) realize that so far in 2005 it’s been quite easy to get tired of new albums before they’re even released. But please let’s let things develop on their own course, insofar as they might." [Cokemachineglow (who has MP3s)]
CYHSY

"A quick Google for this Brooklyn five piece (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah) reveals a myriad of views from the gushing to the ‘don’t believe the hype’ doubters. That so many people are proffering an opinion on something that was self produced and limited initially to only 2000 copies says much about their impact. Now in a second pressing it promises to be the next Arcade Fire, a band propelled first by word of mouth and then by frenzied A&R." [soundxsp]

Silversun Pickups & CMJ Stuff

"Coming up on their five-year anniversary, Silversun Pickups are finally working on a debut album. If you're thinking that's a bit of a laidback attitude for a band, well, lead singer Brian Aubert won't argue with you. Left to their own devices they might still be "fiddling around" in some L.A. garage." [Chart Attack]

Kissing Families (MP3)
"Buried for their official CMJ showcase at The Ace of Clubs at the same time as The Arcade Fire was playing Summerstage, they made the most out of their short time at the Fader Room on Orchard Street by nearly rocking the amps off the stage during a blistering and surprisingly loud set. Expect to hear their name come up a lot more in the coming year. They were fantastic." [CV's CMJ RECAP @ Gothamist]
* Listen to songs at their official site

"Los Angeles-based Silversun Pickups are deceptive. You would never get it from looking at them (or even listening to their EP, Pikul), but they play a wonderfully swampy brand of noisy riff-rock -- sort of like if Queens of the Stone Age were fronted by a total wuss (and that's a compliment). Their secret weapon is bass player Nikki Monninger: She delivers a fat low end that Sabbath fans would dig, and she has a wonderfully spastic stage presence that suggests a robot hopped up on Pop Rocks and Coke (and that is also a compliment). (KA) [SPIN's CMJ RECAP]
* Listen to songs at their MySpace page
"This is my 3rd post on Silversun Pickups, an LA band whose debut EP, Pikul, was released recently. Now I'm sure you've already heard the first single, "Kissing Families," but the whole EP sums up why I love EPs so much. It is reminiscent of TV on The Radio's or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' debut EPs in that it is the perfect length: short enough to leave you clamoring for more, yet just long enough to serve as a great introduction to the strengths of this superior band." [Gorilla vs. Bear]

"These guys played the Fader lounge, meaning they had a 20-minute set in a not-very-crowded venue with ample air conditioning and plenty of cold refreshments. And yet, look at the fucking back sweat on the guy. THAT IS HOW HARD THEY SLAYED. Seriously. A four song routine and the dude looks like he just clocked in at under three hours at the Boston Marathon. Needless to say, can't wait to see these guys again. Heavy as shit, mother fuckers!" Using a Flickr Image without Permission
People use photos off my site for free and without permission on a regular basis. As long as they link back with credit and upload the photo to their own server (thus not using my bandwidth), it's totally acceptable. I do it to other people too.
And I thought pictures posted publicly on Flickr were in fact public. That said, I used a picture from someone's Flickr account for the Fiona Apple Virgin store post. I also linked back to the Flickr account with credit. Apparantly the picture use AND the link upset this person.
Thoughts on this?

Ric Ocasek playing CBGB, The Cars touring, albums
Ric Ocasek of The Cars is playing a CBGB benefit show on on September 29th, though whom it's actually benefiting is questionable since CBGB is likely on its way out and Ocasek has a solo album ("Nexterday") coming out the same week.
In related news, Ocasek won't play with his old band, so when (if) The Cars tour some time in 2006, Todd Rundgren will likely take his place on vocals.

Which (buzz) Bands I Didn't See During CMJ 2005
I haven't even finished posting who I did see (Joggers, Celebration, Walking Concert, De Novo Dahl, We are Scientists, Wolf Parade, etc...), but anyway here's who I DIDN'T see at CMJ 2005...
PRAYERS AND TEARS @ KEXP

1-2. The Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers & Two Gallants
Of Central Village's top five CMJ shows, I didn't see The Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers or Two Gallants. I didn't actually see Silversun Pickups either, but they're not on the list because I saw them open for Brian Jonestown Massacre last night (They were real good). Above photo of Prayers and Tears playing their free KEXP show from Central Village's CMJ photo rundown. He also just posted a Prayers and Tears MP3. Catherine saw Two Gallants @ Cake Shop.
GOBLIN COCK @ MERCURY LOUNGE

3. Goblin Cock
I really wanted to see this Heavy Metal side project of Pinback's Rob Crow, but my Thursday night was already jam packed. Kathryn was there. That's how I got the picture. UIAUD says they were a "hysterical parody of doom metal."
CURSIVE @ BOWERY BALLROOM

4. Cursive
I'm trying to stay away from established bands on this list, but there was a lot of talk about Cursive being the secret guest at the Saddle Creek showcase. The above cropped photo was stolen from heartonastick's photo post. It proves they made it to the show.
TOM VEK @ TRIBECA GRAND

5. Tom Vek
I had multiple chances to catch Tom during his first trip to NYC, but failed all of them. Rajeev from One Louder was more focused . He's got a review with pictures (including the one you see above).
DEVIN DAVIS @ KEXP

6. Devin Davis
Last but not least, I wanted to check out Devin Davis at KEXP, day stage, or CB's Gallery. I didn't make it to any, but Yeti Don't Dance was at the KEXP one. That's where I got the above photo.
7 (sort of). ANY KEXP SHOW
Though the KEXP in-studios were a major highlight of CMJ 2004 for me (imagine a small room, the Arcade Fire, and like 30 people), I didn't make it to even one this year. That's okay because eventually KEXP will post them all as individual streaming shows. In the meantime, you can download them as podcasts or search for the streams by date and time.
As previously mentioned, I missed Bell Orchestre due to a scheduling error on CMJ's part. I also didn't see Clap Your Hands @ Mercury Lounge, The Hold Steady, Regina Spektor @ Irving Plaza, !!!, or Lady Sovereign, but those don't count in this post.

Nokia Theater Times Square opens with Bon Jovi
"With a capacity of 2,200, the Nokia isn't tiny. But it delivers the feel of a club because of the multiple balconies that hug the stage, allowing more patrons close to the stage than at conventional theaters. While it's far from the perfect rock venue, the sound - delivered through hundreds of small, shiny new JBL speakers - was very good, the sightlines were unobstructed and the joint is small enough that you don't need a telescope to see the stars. The air conditioning, however, was abysmal. And inside the auditorium, the Nokia has all the style and warmth of a McDonald's." [NY Post]
"This is probably the smallest thing we did since dinner last night at my place," joked Jon Bon Jovi Monday night, referring to the intimate confines of the Nokia Theater Times Square in New York City. His band Bon Jovi christened the new 2,100-capacity venue -- the audience included Jay-Z, Beyonce and L.A. Reid, among others -- by bringing out their arena-sized blast of melodic hooks and rock-star poses." [Rolling Stone]

The Downtown in Farmingdale Closes | RIP

Without a fight, The Downtown in Farmingdale (Long Island, NY) just shut its doors forever...
"The club planned to announce the news Monday night in a mass e-mail. All concerts have been canceled, and refunds for tickets will be issued at point of purchase, according to one staffer. The owners declined to say why the club, which had booked shows through December, was shutting down.
'It's a tough business,' says Dave Glicker, a former co-owner. 'I know from operating for many years that insurance alone is almost cost-prohibitive. Especially when you're hosting very aggressive rock and roll shows....'
...The Downtown was no CBGB, but it became a goal for up-and-coming local bands. It was clean, well-lit and boasted a fine sound system. 'If you could headline there, regardless of whether you sold out, it was just a real milestone,' says Shaun Cooper, bassist for Straylight Run. 'It meant you were on your way.'" [Newsday]

Brian Jonestown Massacre @ Pianos, NYC | pics
Tonight (September 20, 2005) I heard Anton Newcombe of Brian Jonestown Massacre rant and rave on stage, in the crowd, and in the sound booth at Pianos in NYC. He confirmed the news that his stuff was stolen. He started with audience members. They started with him. Then after about an hour, he disappeared into the crowd without ever even playing one full song.

Chad VanGaalen @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC | CMJ | pics

Thanks to Sub Pop, the United States finally got to experience Canada's Chad VanGaalen live on stage. Chad was the first to play Sub Pop's CMJ showcase on Saturday September 17, 2005. He played to a much smaller crowd than Wolf Parade did over 5 hours later at the same show.
His CMJ show as actually part of a small U.S. tour with labelmate Rogue Wave whose members also joined him and his two bandmates on stage for a few songs (Chad also came back later during their set). As Fluxblog pointed out in his review, Chad played about 1/3 of his album in addition to a cover of Bruce Springsteen's Dancing in the Dark. He's a singer-songwriter who sounded just like he does on record. No fireworks, just good songs.

Backstage at the Mercury Prize award ceremony, M.I.A. discussed the possibility of a duet with Mercury Prize winner Antony. Shortly after the show, the also-nominated Kaiser Chiefs denied ever saying Antony didn't belong.
Earlier the same day, M.I.A. performed a cover of the Kaiser Chief's Everyday I Love you Less and Less live on the BBC. Dreams of Horses has the MP3.

Towers of London @ Scenic | CMJ 2005 | pics

I started CMJ Day 4 (Saturday Sept. 17, 2005) at 1 PM. Towers of London were scheduled to play the basement of Scenic at 1 AM. They went on at 2. Thirteen hours after I started my fourth day in a row of CMJ shows, Towers of London not only played my favorite CMJ show, but pulled off one of the most legendary performances I've ever been a part of. They're part Sex Pistols, part Motley Crue, the Darkness' evil cousin, more Satan than Satanicide, pure energy, and complete insanity.

I don't know how my camera made it out alive, and I'm not sure how much of the liquid covering my body when I left was sweat, how much was beer, and how much came out of the band members' mouths.

* efestivals has pics of them at Reading 2005
* efestivals also has a review.
* Listen to an in-studio session at XFM

I was talking to the drummer after the show. He was super nice and said they're returning to NYC in November.
The next night they played an unadvertised show at Bar 13. Mike Neuman was there. He wrote a review.

Towers of London @ Bar 13 | Neuman's Review
Towers of London
Bar 13 - 9/18/05
By Mike Neuman
Deciding on what angle to write this review from was a difficult choice. The 13 year old girl in me wants to scream "OMG! TOWERS OF LONDON FREAKIN' ROCK!!!" But the professional rock journalist in me is asking "What the fuck is this? Is this real?" Because I am neither a 13 year old girl, nor am I a professional rock journalist, (as apparent in my love of beginning sentences with conjunctions) this is probably going to sound more like an excited explorer telling a tale of discovering a new land.
The first time I heard Towers of London was a few weeks ago on MySpace. Immediately I could hear the cynics cry."We've already seen this act before. The Darkness, Spinal Tap, Sex Pistols, etc." Of course, if you've read about Towers of London before, then you've heard these comparisons too. However, there are some subtle differences that make Towers of London stand out from the rest. The first thing is.I don't think this is tounge-in-cheek at all. I think these guys are serious. Where The Darkness is more like "Oh yeah, I get it, they sound like Queen.", Towers of London are closer to "Holy shit, now I know what would happen if Poison fucked the Sex Pistols." But they also add the classic punk anthems of Sham 69, and more nihilism than the Pistols ever had. I mean at least the Sex Pistols had some political leanings. Towers' ethos seems to start and end with "DRINK, FIGHT, FUCK." Although none of the bands they get compared to have ever had lyrics as profound as "Fuck it up!" over and over again.
When Towers of London spat out their first song, I was imagining the ways in which they had prepared for this show. My only possible theory is that they must've been locked in a cage and fed nothing but booze for hours before the show. They were threatening, dangerous, and they take themselves seriously. Lead singer Donny Tourette was wearing a shirt with "NYC SUCKS" spray painted on the front, and "ME OFF" on the back. It was incredibly appropriate that in the 2 hours leading up to the bands performance, The Decline of Western Civilization Part 1 & 2 were on the televisions on the wall. Towers of London could have easily climbed right out of the screen and onto the stage like the little creepy girl in The Ring. Bottles were broken, mic stands were kicked into the crowd, microphones were swung into people's faces, and the band climbed up the walls. I could barely understand a word that was coming out of the band member's disgusting mouths. I don't know if it was because the show was loud enough to fill Radio City Music Hall, or if it was because of the slurred cockney accents. Regardless, the show was thrilling to say the least. I absolutely loved it.
So will Towers of London usher in a new wave of "cock punk"? I hope not, because I can't imagine any other band doing it as seriously and as amazingly well as these guys do it. Plus I don't know how well the hipsters will take to the resurgence of gobbing. The Towers seem destined for self-destruction. See them while you can.

New Pornographers on Neko & Brooklyn Show
Pitchfork: So Neko Case is also going to be coming back for that tour after playing some shows without her. How was it adjusting to her absence?
Newman: It was only in June that we started playing shows without her. For obvious reasons, the first couple shows seemed weird. We thought, "What are people going to think? Are people going to throw stuff at us? What if people only like us because Neko is in the band?" And then after a couple shows, we realized that wasn't the case. And it helps that Kathryn [Calder] is just really good. She's a great singer and also a great piano player, so musically she makes the band a lot better because we've got this extra virtuoso musician. Did you go to that Brooklyn show?
Pitchfork: Yes, I did. I thought that it came out pretty good.
Newman: That was fun. It just seemed weird that this was the biggest show that we've ever played, and we were playing it with this new lineup, and it made us realize that we can function as a band without Neko.
We always want to have Neko around to play with us, but I think that whole little trip was like an experiment because we had to start playing without Neko. If we were always waiting for Neko to play, then it would be another record that we didn't support and didn't tour. Neko knew all of this, so the whole situation works out pretty nicely.

Dear CMJ, Love Regina Spektor
Regina Spektor played what was probably her biggest headlining show yet at Irving Plaza Thursday night (Sept 15, 2005) for CMJ. I was gonna try and go after Arcade Fire @ Summerstage (and before Cloud Cult @ 169 Bar), but then I found out I could get in to Gang of Four @ Hard Rock. Here's a letter Regina sent to her mailing list after the show...
----
Hello every-wonderful/beautiful-one!
i just wanted to send a small note to you all, because i couldn't not send one. i wanted to share some of my happiness and gratitude to everyone who came out to the show at Irving Plaza...Before sound check there were still 26 tickets left, and after, there were none... all full... but i didn't really know what that felt like till i stepped onto the stage... it took my breath away and made me so happy and overwhelmed and i still don't understand where y'all came from... You listened with such generosity of spirit and with such respect towards each other... it was amazing... i thank you with all my heart and i will never forget that magical night. I also would like to thank Langhorne Slim and DeVotchKa who rocked out. If you aren't familiar with their music, check them both out, you'll be glad you did... well... that's all for now... i am back to working hard in the studio, and the memory of the show is already starting to feel like a dream... we'll meet again,
good night,
regina

Neko Case Playing Joe's Pub | New Album
Neko Case "has just finished recording her fifth studio album. Yvette Ray, publicist for her Canadian label, Mint Records, told the Straight that the record is titled Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. Currently being mastered and scheduled for release next February, the album was recorded in Tucson, Arizona and will span 11 original songs plus the traditional country number “John Saw That Number”. Featured performers on the record include Joey Burns and John Convertino of Calexico, Dallas and Travis Good from the Sadies, and Howe Gelb from Giant Sand. Case also gets help from a member of the rock ’n’ roll Hall of Fame, as keyboardist Garth Hudson from the Band guests on the disc." [Straight]
The New Pornographers just played Bowery Ballroom for CMJ. As the Village Voice and Gothamist pointed out, Neko was not there. She will be at their next two October shows at Webster Hall though.
A few days after the New Porn gigs, she'll celebrate her new solo album at Joe's Pub with an early and late show. Nov 17, 2005 - 7:30 & 9:30 - tickets on sale.

Brian Jonestown Massacre's Gear Stolen in NYC
Brian Jonestown Massacre is scheduled to play an acoustic show at Pianos tomorrow. Don't know how this news will affect it...
"Okay folks, so apparently a relatively tragic thing has happened tonight. In Brooklyn, before the BJM's Bowery Ballroom show, the band's van along with the U-haul trailer containing ALL OF THE BANDS EQUIPMENT was stolen. People I guess have hustled to get stuff together for them to play the gig tonight but that leaves Anton, Rickey, Frankie, Collin, and Dan without a vehicle and most importantly, without all of their precious musical instruments and amplifiers...
If everyone in the area (or even not so close) keeps an eye out at pawn shops, music stores, private sellers, and even e-bay for this missing gear-it could help eventually track some of it down.
We'll try to provide a more comprehensive list eventually- but off the top of my head is this-
Gretch 1960's round badge drum kit-turquoise.
-kick drum has the BJM logo on it (who knows- the robbers might be stupid enough not to take it off)
Fender Bassman 1960's blackface head
-notable that the 'B' is blackend out so that it reads "assman"
-this is one of the most unique and amazing sounding bass rigs, has a really warm, big fucked up fuzz sound when turned up.
Frankie's 1970's siverface Fender Twin amp
2 Fender Twin re-issue black face amps
- the one Anton plays is notable for it's amazing huge sounding reverb.
Basically it is a huge part of Anton's sound.
-notable for a sticker on the front that reads "Masonic" (again, the bandits might be stupid enough...)
Collin's Rickenbacker bass- red Rickey's 12-string 1960's Gibson ES-335 (possibly (hopefully) he had this with him and it was not stolen)
-amazingly beautiful guitar
Vox Cheetah- maroon
-quite fucked up from years of tour abuse, but Anton's main guitar (owned by Frankie)
Vox 12-string Phantom- black and white
Vox 12-string Starstreamer- sunburst teardrop shape
Rickenbacker 12-string 360- black and white Epiphone 6-string- sunburst
Frankie also has a Telecaster- I'm not sure the details of it.
I'm sure there was more but if people spread the word out there for this gear and people keep their eyes open- some of it might pop up- especially being sold/bought together, then there might be a chance of retrieving some of this stuff.
As of now, I do not know what will happen with the few remaining shows of the tour. We gotta still figure out how to get the guys home!
Anyway, it's a terrible situation- a band's worst nightmare- and maybe
through everyone's love and support we can get through it and hopefully getting some of the stuff back will lessen this huge blow that was dealt to the Brian Jonestown Massacre.
Please repost, spread the word, and keep an eye out."
(thx Miss Ohio)

NY Magazine: Maria and Mellie Got Lost
There's been a lot of (somewhat disturbing) activity in my Mellie Carballo drug overdose post lately. At first it didn't phase me. Then I remembered the NY Magazine writer that contacted me for information on a story. I checked, and it was in fact recently published (hence all the traffic).
"Until recently, a photo of Mellie Carballo, smiling sanguinely, was on a Website promoting a Friday dance party called Trash, one of a string of parties with names like Misshapes, Bust, and Motherfucker that together compose a sort of intro course for hipster nightlife. Replenished by a steady stream of undergrads, the scene is almost sentimentally retro—New Order is as popular as disco-punk, and the regulars dress like it’s Limelight in 1987. These aren’t places where everyone’s waiting for Tara Reid to show up: They’re more intimate and cliquish, yet every bit as naughty. By the end of her freshman year this spring at Hunter, Mellie had become a regular. “She was a familiar face and around a lot,” says Sarah Lewitinn, who runs the Ultragrrrl clubland blog. “And so adorable, so cute, always well dressed. She’d wear a band T-shirt, tattered but fitted, a cute miniskirt. She seemed pretty popular.” [NY Magazine]

Seu Jorge @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC | pics (part 2)

Two nights before my pre-CMJ show at Tonic, Seu Jorge from Brazil played the first of two nights at Bowery Ballroom in NYC (September 11, 2005).

The crowd was a mix of world music fans that included Portuguese speaking Brazilians and people curious to see the guy that sings David Bowie cover songs in Wes Anderson's Life Aquatic. Nobody was disappointed with what they saw/heard, though the Portuguese speakers had a slightly different experience. They actually knew what Jorge was saying (during and between the songs).
He opened with two solo Portuguese Bowie covers, played a full set of his music, and closed with three more Bowie songs. The whole thing was magical. The band never stopped smiling, and in turn neither did the crowd. They even helped break the though-shall-not-dance curse that seems to plague Bowery Ballroom. People were moving. I swear.

Stay tuned for Part 3...

Tonight's Shows, CMJ update, Apartment, & Stuff
You know what I did for the first three days of CMJ. Details of day 4 and the post-CMJ Ryan Adams concert coming soon. That said, I had no time to list a full week of shows for Gothamist. Instead I only posted tonight's shows. Look for the rest tomorrow.
Three especially interesting things tonight:
1) The Nokia Theatre opens with Bon Jovi
2) BB Kings hosts a super hip-hop benefit show
3) Mercury Lounge has what looks like a great lineup of UK bands that includes the Strays who I saw about 30 seconds of during CMJ (on tour with Towers of London) and Apartment. Apartment are releasing a homemade CD on Ultragrrrl's Stolen Transmission label. Strangely, Ultragrrrl says nothing about it. Apartment's website has the info.

CMJ Day 3 - A recap in Pictures
I wanted to go to the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah appearance on KCRW (listening right now...wish I went), catch the Patti Smith performance (Bob Dylan thing at Lincoln Center), see the Hold Steady at day stage, attend a panel about blogs, etc... Instead I did nothing during the day for the third day in a row.
It all started at Tribeca Rock Club at 5 PM with the Loose Record / Woxy show featuring Voxtrot, Chin Up Chin Up, and Dios Malos.
VOXTROT @ TRIBECA ROCK CLUB

CHIN UP CHIN UP @ TRIBECA ROCK CLUB

After the first two bands played, I asked them if they wouldn't mind posing for a picture.
DIOS @ TRIBECA ROCK CLUB

The Cribs also played the Tribeca show, but I had to be at Tonic by 8:30 for the return of Magneta Lane.
MAGNETA LANE @ TONIC

Conveniently, another Canadian band called Camouflage Nights went on right after Magneta Lane.
"Camouflage Nights are ex-Thrush Hermit members Ian McGettigan and Rob (Tigre) Benvie. Benvie is also formerly of The Dears and currently in Presse. Camouflage Nights are not just McGettigan and Benvie; on disc they are joined by any combination of many people, including Feist, Buck 65, City Field’s Matt Murphy, Sloan’s Chris Murphy and many more." [Being There]
CAMOUFLAGE NIGHTS @ TONIC

CAMOUFLAGE NIGHTS @ TONIC

While trying to figure out what to do next, I walked by Mercury Lounge. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah weren't even going on for a few hours...
CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH @ MERCURY LOUNGE

(line to the corner in both directions)

I like Secretly Canadian so I stopped by their showcase at Scenic (where I now see I missed a J Mascis side project earlier in the day). I saw this guy who sits on the floor and does lots of weird stuff open for TV on the Radio once. There he was again. Now I'll remember that his name is Ty Braxton. He was just finishing his set. Though I wanted to see Wilderness who were coming on later, I wasn't in the mood to try out Big Bear who were coming on next.
TY BRAXTON @ SCENIC

Then I realized a bunch of bands I wanted to see were playing the Kill Rock Stars showcase at Knitting Factory, and I made it there in time to catch a bit of The Robot Ate Me in the basement before the venue forced him off stage. (He said he was playing a house party somewhere in Brooklyn on Saturday for those who wanted more though.)
THE ROBOT ATE ME @ KNITTING FACTORY

Next I saw the Gossip for the first time (on the main stage). I'm sorry I waited so long. They were awesome - like awesome-awesome.
THE GOSSIP @ KNITTING FACTORY

Listen to the Gossip at Myspace.

After such a great performance, I couldn't I couldn't justify staying out any later for a (supposed) 2 AM Lady Sovereign show at Bowery Ballroom. Turns out I made the right choice... Bowery wouldn't let the under-21 performer in the venue!

Lady Sovereign played CMJ 3 Times?

In honor of the three (at least) NYC Lady Sovereign performances I missed this week, I stole the above picture from Tien Mao's photo review of her September 15th CMJ show at Webster Hall with Blackalicious and Aesop Rock.
Her other two shows were at Cake shop in the middle of some night, and at Bowery Ballroom as I write this (decided to come home instead).

Cloud Cult @ 169 Bar, NYC | CMJ 2005 | pics

I don't think I'll be able to top CMJ Day 2 (September 15, 2005). Although I never made it to Cloud Cult's KEXP performance earlier in the day, and I missed Bell Orchestre thanks to a typeo in CMJ's scheduling (they started before the posted time of 7:00), I was able to catch full sets by Sound Team, Arcade Fire (Bowie included), Gang of Four (Tim Harrington included), and Cloud Cult (thankfully 169 Bar was running a bit behind schedule).
Watching this band at this bar felt like hanging out in their rehearsal space. The sound wasn't great, it was small and dingy, and there were wires everywhere. Coincidentally I ended CMJ day 1 in the same spot at the same time for the (much more packed) Make Believe show the night before.
Though I enjoyed Cloud Cult's performance at Tonic two nights earlier a bit more, and I had just come from two other awesome shows, this show was still a great experience with my favorite band of the moment.

Heartonastick saw Arcade Fire & Cloud Cult too.
I don't know why 169 Bar discouraged MC Buttafuoco from coming. It wasn't packed at all.

CMJ Is Poop
"Since I haven't attended a single CMJ show yet, I figured that I was the perfect person to present awards to this year's participants. Of course, having only heard of approximately 5% of these bands, I'm going to have to base it solely on their names. I don't think that will be much of a problem.
Best band that sounds like a combination of Joy Division and Squirrel Nut Zippers -- Joy Zipper
Best band that I want to see purely because of their Saved by the Bell connection -- Bayside..."

Also Tuesday night, Melody Nelson saw the second Nouvelle Vague show at Joe's Pub. I was at the one a few days earlier.

Village Voice Guide to CMJ | Towers of London
Towers of London + We Are Scientists
Scenic, 25 Ave B, 212-253-2595.
My new favorite band, Towers of London thrust Guns N' Roses cock rock into Johnny Rotten's mouth and make him swallow. The result is masterfully sleazy. Plus, their shows often end in an arrest and/or broken furniture, so leave your dignity at home. Skinny white guys from Cali, We Are Scientists play sweaty, wired, herky-jerky pop stuff. With the Strays, Living Things, and Innaway. 9pm. FURY

Arcade Fire on secret guest Bowie & opener Sound Team
How do you know Sound Team, the band that's opening up for you?
We played with them and the Unicorns. The last time we were on tour we were driving through Texas and we were driving to Dallas, and we were in Waco and our van broke down. So we were stranded, and we called up a friend, and she knew Sound Team, and she called them up. They were kind enough to come and pick us up in the middle of nowhere with all our gear, and then they drove us up to Dallas in time to make it for our show.
Any surprises for your show tomorrow?
I can't really say much. I think it might be a bit different because we have some extra people in town, but I can't say exactly what's going to happen.
* The whole interview at the Village Voice
* Sound Team tells BV Win asked them to play the show
* People speculate Bowie might be a surprise guest

The show itself went a little long. Cloud Cult actually played until almost 1:00 I think (sorry to those who had to leave early to sleep). If it's any consolation to those who toughed it out, I was there for almost nine hours (fever included).

Sometimes Stuff Sucks
I saw Kaki King perform at Joe's Pub tonight. She mentioned being ashamed for ever complaining about anything because so much stuff sucks for so many people right now. That type of thinking keeps me from feeling really terrible about leaving my wallet in a cab (I knew I shouldn't of wasted money on a stupid cab) after returning from a marathon day of CMJ. I realized it immediately and tried chasing the cab down the street. He was too fast. I already felt pretty crappy (not just because I have a cold/fever/cough) about the loss of Aziz's backpack (iPod and digital camera included) at last night's show. Did I mention you should let me know if you found a backpack?
"The official death toll from Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath now stands at 707."
"At least 160 people were killed and 570 wounded in more than a dozen highly coordinated bombings - the capital's bloodiest day since the end of major combat."

Thank You & Talk To You Soon
It's now 8:30 PM on CMJ Day 1. This is the first time I've had access to the Internet since Tuesday afternoon. Thanks so much to everyone who came out to Tonic Tuesday night. It was a huge success, and all the bands were great. I came down with a fever right before the show, but made it through and am somehow out at shows again today. Hopefully I don't die before the end of CMJ.
Unfortunately last night didn't end all good. Someone (accidentally?) took Aziz's backpack. It was sitting by the bar while he was performing his second set, and was nowhere to be found when we shut the place down. If you happen to know where it went, please e-mail Aziz or I (no questions asked). Thanks! Talk to you soon.

Nouvelle Vague @ Joe's Pub, NYC | pics
"Nouvelle Vague which translates to "new wave" in English, and bossa nova in Portuguese, revisits a number of both Marc and Olivier's favourite tracks from the early eighties, taking in bands such as The Clash, Joy Division, and the Cure in a stunning combination of bossa nova, jazz and sixties pop." [Amazon]

I didn't know what to expect from the French band that play cover songs. They put on a great show. Joe's Pub was standing-room only Saturday night (Sept 10, 2005), and the three leading ladies knew how to work the crowd with their range in voices and a bit of humor. The highlight was probably their attempt at testing the level of audience shyness with a sing-along to their extended rendition of the Dead Kennedy's Too Drunk to F*ck. Other favorites included Joy Division's Love Will Tear us Apart, Depeche Mode's Just Can't Get Enough, and The Clash's Guns of Brixton. You can catch them two more times during CMJ.

Stream 3 songs and watch a video on their website.

* Gothamist reviewed the show
* The Modern Age was there too.
* Daily Refill has an MP3
* Tale of Two Cities recommends Nouvelle Vague for CMJ

Video of British Antony at the Mercury Awards
"The lead singer of Mercury Music Prize winners Antony and the Johnsons has dismissed claims he is an American artist taking a British award.
"Everyone's certainly entitled to that opinion, but I actually am British," Antony Hegarty told BBC News.
The 34-year-old singer was born in Chichester, West Sussex, but has lived in the US for more than 20 years. When the shortlist came out, favourites the Kaiser Chiefs said he was American and "got in on a technicality"."
Watch Antony's acceptance speech and performance at the Merucry Prize Awards. Use the same link to find performances by Bloc Party, The Go Team, Kaiser Chiefs, Maxmimo Park and more.

Bowie Discovered the Arcade Fire | Na na na na na!
"Explaining why he decided to make his comeback at a fashion event in the States, Bowie said: "I told them I'd do it only if they got Arcade Fire to perform. They're fantastic."
Laughing, he said: "I discovered them a year ago. Coldplay's Chris Martin has been saying he's discovered them first, but I did. So there. Na na na na na!"" [Mirror]

Arcade Fire & David Bowie MP3 Audio & Video
Bowie backstage w/ Duran Duran
"It's great to be back. I loved every minute of being back on stage - I didn't want to come off, I could have stayed up there all night. I feel fantastic at the moment.
After I had the heart attack I decided to take a year off and do nothing. I didn't do any work and just made sure I looked after myself. I go to the gym, I don't drink and I'm feeling really good today.
I gave up smoking six months before I had the heart attack - so that was worth it, wasn't it! I started to give up when my daughter was born because I wouldn't smoke in the house with her there so I had to go outside. It's bloody cold in winter in New York, so I just quit.
As far as I'm concerned I lead a healthy lifestyle now so it did come as a bit of a shock to have a heart attack, but I feel on top of the world after tonight.
When I was asked to do this event I said I wanted to perform with Arcade Fire, who I love, and it went from there." [Bowie]
* Audio and Video of David Bowie & The Arcade Fire's performance at Fashion Rocks is available thanks to the busy people in the arcadefire.net forums.

No Gwen Stefani @ Misshapes Last Night
MOB SCENE OUTSIDE MISSHAPES - SEPTEMBER 10, 2005

At 11:00 last night I received a text message that read "GWEN STEFANI MISSHAPES." If it was Misshapes' intent to start a fake rumor that would pack a potentially slow night at their club, it worked. I didn't see Thurston Moore either.
* Gwen performed at Radio City Thursday night before the Arcade Fire
* Gwen's L.A.M.B. show is said to be the highlight of fashion week. It's at Roseland Ballroom on September 16th.
* Gwen was spotted in the audience of her husband's show at Bowery Ballroom on August 30th. Below photo of the VIP section at Gavin Rossdale's Institute show snagged from Central Village's Flickr account.
GWEN STEFANI @ BOWERY BALLROOM
"L.A.M.B., which stands for Love, Angel, Music, Baby, makes its debut on the runway Sept. 16, the finale of eight days of fashion previews for spring 2006. It's the same slot that Jennifer Lopez's Sweetface collection filled last season" [The Seattle Times]

Arcade Fire Cover Maps by Yeah Yeah Yeahs | MP3
Arcade Fire in the Live Lounge
09 September 2005
"Arcade Fire are very much the band of the moment so we just had to get them into the Live Lounge, naturally! They told us what they made of performing at the Reading and Leeds festivals and which big names are already fans of the band.
They also performed their current single 'Rebellion (Lies)'. You can hear it all again, plus an online exlusive cover version of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs track 'Maps'."
