First Antony wins the Mercury Award. Now the Arcade Fire perform with David Bowie on prime time TV. Tear jerkers, both of 'em.
It aired about 5 minutes ago. I figure the audio and video is somewhere online by now. Please post links in the comments. Thanks!

Bowie bandaged & bruised @ Fashion Rocks
I just watched Bowie perform Life on Mars at Fashion Rocks on TV. He had a black eye and a bandage on his arm (as the picture proves). Was it a tribute to New Orleans or something? When Arcade Fire joins him, they're gone.
P.S. Someone please make Mark McGrath go away.

CBGB's Gay Presence: A Queer Rocker Remembers
"Although mainly known for its kinship with all things “punk”, CBGB’s has also embraced and featured many other styles of rock music including new wave, heavy metal, rap, folk, alternative and all manner of progressive and experimental genres
I’ve read numerous “scholarly” writings on the importance of CBGB’s in the history of American pop culture. Oddly, few of them contain any mention of the vibrant and consistent gay presence that was always part this iconic club..." [AfterElton.com]

Jazz Musicians Ask if Their Scene Will Survive
"New Orleans is a jazz town, but also a funk town, a brass-band town, a hip-hop town and a jam-band town. It has international jazz musicians and hip-hop superstars, but also a true, subsistence-level street culture. Much of its music is tied to geography and neighborhoods, and crowds.
Mardi Gras Indian tribes, upholders of an old tradition, at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 2003.
All that was incontrovertibly true until a week ago Monday. Now the future for brass bands and Mardi Gras Indians, to cite two examples, looks particularly bleak if their neighborhoods are destroyed by flooding, and bleaker still with the prospect of no new tourists coming to town soon to infuse their traditions with new money...." David Bowie & Arcade Fire Fashion Rock pics | TV tonight
David Bowie performed with the Arcade Fire at the Fashion Rocks concert at Radio City Music Hall last night (Sept 8, 2005). The show will be televised tonight. (click photos for larger versions)
"...A ton of intruments flood the stage after Duran Duran and it turns out that Arcade Fire are up next. Thanks to Brooklynvegan, I knew that a. David Bowie will be joining them onstage and b., they will perform "Wake Up". Besides my friend and I, the only person that seems to be enjoying this performance is a girl to my right, two rows in front of me. Most people were talking or reading. Lisa Marie Presley introduces the superunion and Bowie and Arcade Fire first perform "Five Years." Then Bowie announces that they will perform an Arcade Fire song. Bowie is still playing guitar and starts singing the first verse. Oh to be Win Butler at that moment. Someone he listened to while growing up is singing a song he wrote, on stage, at Radio City Music Hall. The song sounds great and of course, I wanted them to play more. But we only get two songs from the Arcade Fire-David Bowie supergroup..." [death of a party]

Hunter Thompson's Suicide Note
"...Oh, well. His ashes were fired into the sky near his home in Woody Creek, Colo., on Aug. 20 with lots of fireworks. That seemed to bring us some kind of suitably mad "closure," as the TV shrinks say.
Now, Rolling Stone magazine, for which he wrote a lot of his best stuff in the '70s, has published a note he wrote to Anita four days before he killed himself in the kitchen.
The note doesn't make you feel any better about his timing with the phone call and the son and grandson hearing the gun go off, but it turns out that our first, and nobler, explanations had some truth to them after all.
"No More Games. No More Bombs. No More Walking. No More Fun. No More Swimming. 67. That is 17 years past 50. 17 more than I needed or wanted. Boring. I am always bitchy. No Fun -- for anybody. 67. You are getting Greedy. Act your old age. Relax -- This won't hurt."
With a sort of cryptic, ironic, metaphorical hilarity, he took a black marker and titled the note: "Football Season Is Over."..." [Washington Post]

Black Mountain Missed NYC show because... | Touring
DOWNLOAD BLACK MOUNTAIN (MP3s)
Druganaut
Heart of Snow
Tickets are on sale for Black Mountain's shows that include Sept 27 at Maxwell's in Hoboken and Sept 28 at Mercury Lounge in NYC. All tour Dates after the explanation for the band's no-show at the Bowery Hold Steady show....
"At near the outset of their tour with Coldplay, Black Mountain missed two shows because of completely unforeseeable immigration issues that held up band member and Vancouverite Stephen Mcbean at the Canadian / US border. Black Mountain had completed the proper work permit paperwork allowing all members into the US to open up for Coldplay legally, and all was set, except there was incomplete data for Stephen Mcbean that prevented him from coming into the United States, as per the U.S Department of Homeland Security's new guidelines for allowing entry into the United States....
...Basically, some U.S. Immigration's database of information for Stephen Mcbean was not jiving with some Canadian "database in the sky", and Stephen Mcbean had to chase down some physical paperwork to fill in the dots. With the help of Coldplay's immigration lawyers, all was taken care of as quickly as it could have been and Black Mountain only ended up missing two shows, the Hartford, CT show with Coldplay and their much anticipated NYC show with The Hold Steady.
An interesting side story is that, after Black Mountain was in bureacratic limbo for some period of time on Thursday, the Black Mountaineers without Stephen McBean rushed to the Hartford, CT show. They got stuck in traffic getting into the Meadows Music Center, and band member Matt Camirand grabbed an acoustic guitar and ran through the traffic and to the gates of the arena, where he got a security guard to escort him right to the stage, where Coldplay's tour manager was awaiting him with some beers. Matt proceeded to play a 20 minute solo Blood Meridian set to a sold out stadium. For those who don't know, Blood Meridian is Matt Camirand and Joshua Well's other band when they are not performing as Black Mountain." [Black Mountain News]

Bill Frisell + Hal Wilner = an Unspeakable Orchestra | Tix
"...So the news that Bill Frisell was collaborating with producer Hal Wilner and engineer Eric Liljestrand raised my expectations. But Unspeakable is both more than I hoped for and a little less. It will move no asses, that's for sure—anything that did would be hopelessly out of character for the introspective Frisell. Although this is his most "contemporary" album by virtue of Liljestrand's manipulations and Wilner's sampling of ethnic and sound-library recordings, it opens deliberately recherché, with Frisell's octave voicings and darting string arrangement honoring Wes Montgomery and Don Sebesky—the title "1968" presumably refers to the year of Montgomery's death. (Beats me why a bouncier but otherwise very similar number that comes later on is named for the obscure beatnik comedian Del Close.) Frisell's inventive writing for a three-piece string section featuring Jenny Scheinman's violin, Eyvind Kang's viola, and Hank Roberts's cello—most effectively employed on a eulogy for the drummer D. Sharpe—reveals a talent for orchestration dormant since The Sweetest Punch, his 1998 album of Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello covers...." [The Village Voice]
Bill Frisell and Hal Wilner are playing four shows at Tonic in NYC on September 20 & 21. Tickets are on sale.

Jandek @ Issue Project Room, Brooklyn, NY | pics
Jandek played an early and late show (different sets) at Issue Project Room last night (Sept 7, 2005) in Brooklyn, NY. They were two shows added last minute in addition to the one he played at Anthology Film Archive one day earlier. The three shows were part of a RARE six show tour from the mysterious guy who hardly ever plays, but has over 40 albums. I was at the early show.

I wanted to hate the show . The venue was absolutely stunning, the man is mythical, and he makes beautiful music, but I wanted to hate it because the doors weren't open at 7:00 as advertised (imagine a large crowd of music nerds standing on the side of the road near the gowanus canal in the middle of nowhere brooklyn). The show started late (some of us had places to be). You couldn't bring drinks in the performance area. The silo-shaped room (with a huge pole in the middle and more poles by the stage) was horrible (only those lucky enough to get a seat on the floor up front actually had a full view of Jandek and his band). We were threatened in a Scottish (Scottish, right?) accent with ejection from the barn if we were caught taking pictures or recording. We were told (in a nice way?) that the only reason Jandek was doing the extra 2 NYC shows, was because the New Orleans ones were cancelled. In other words we were to be thankful a city was wiped away because, "we sure as hell wouldn't of played extra shows for you just because the first NYC show sold out in one second" (not an actual quote). AND why couldn't they have played extra NYC shows AND the New Orleans shows? (note: I know I'm a spoiled New Yorker) My cynical mind decided it had something to do with a pretentious six-show concept that was related to the professional video cameras recording the whole event.

Well...I LOVED IT. By the time Jandek and band were halfway through their first song, not only did I forget all that was negative, I was completely entranced. I stayed that way for the rest of his 90 minute set. I didn't need a good seat because the show was best when I closed my eyes. The acoustics in the silo room were awesome (my unprofessional opinion). The lack of flashes and cameras in the quiet, cozy setting was a good thing too (yes, I obviously managed to sneak a few shots). And the lack of flashes will be even better on the DVD that I guess we can look forward to.

* There's a documentary about Jandek.
* Pitchfork reviewed the show in Texas a few days earlier.
* Heart on a Stick was also at this show.
* Amy was at the Anthology Film Archive show
* Adam was at the Film show too.
* Annabean was there too.

Six Organs of Admittance @ Arthurfest | ML Tix
ArthurFest happened Sept 4-5 in Los Angeles.
"The best of the indie-folk lot was Six Organs Of Admittance, who comes from the more avant-garde side of the spectrum. Ghostly vocals hovered over guitars that captured a midnight drone, so much so that every louder pluck was cause for alarm, and when the instruments erupted into a burst of acid-drenched noise it was the sound of a shiver being sent down a spine." The Deli's real (CMJ) Music Marathon
"OPEN CALL TO NEW YORK CITY BANDS:
Marie Helene, one of our dedicated Staff Writers, will run a real Music Marathon during the NYC CMJ event. As a Marathon is 26.2 miles long, she will attend - from Wednesday to Saturday - 26 live shows of NYC bands, by sprinting to and from every venue!
More importantly, YOU CAN INFLUENCE HER SHOW HOPPING ROUTE and convince her to check out your band! How can you do that? Just email her at marie@thedelimagazine.com including links to your website/MP3s/bio information.
Marie will keep us informed on a daily basis about her plans and actual final route on the Deli blog. Next week she will compile a list of the 10 bands she was most impressed with.
This might become a shortcut for you to an interview on the Deli Magazine or maybe even - who knows? - its next cover!
The Deli is a publication that focuses exclusively on NYC based bands.
Give our roving reporter a shout out and tell her why SHE MUST COME AND SEE YOUR BAND: marie@thedelimagazine.com

Jay-Z backs Kanye and Lady Sovereign
"Rap mogul Jay-Z is standing behind Kanye West, who went off-script to declare that "George Bush doesn't care about black people" during his appearance in last Friday's NBC telethon for Hurricane Katrina victims." [Reuters]
"...A full-length Lady Sov jawn, with the tentative title of Straight Up Cheeky is expected for Spring 2006… but which lucky label will release it? Well, Universal’s got its tentacles wrapped around her worldwide, but in the U.S.A., the pint-sized princess has been in talks with Def Jam, having been flown out to New York City by the label’s president, Shawn Carter. Yes, that’s right: Jay-Z is trying to sign Lady Sovereign..." [Pitchfork]

2 New CYHSY MP3s | Satan Said Dance
Satan Said Dance was the first Clap Your Hands Say Yeah song that stuck in my head. When I first listened to their CD, I waited to hear it. It wasn't there. I'm not the only one who's wondered where it was. Finally someone taped a live show and posted the MP3s. (thx Kathryn for the heads up)

Is Willy Mason the Country Egg Biscuit?
Central Village pointed out a mystery band by the name of "Country Egg Biscuit" on the lineup of the September 16th Mercury Lounge CMJ show (Dr. Dog, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Robbers on High Street, and Ambulance Ltd also on that bill). Jen commented in in the CV post with some convincing evidence that leads me to believe Willy Mason is the artist in question. Why would Willy use a fake name? Maybe because he's officially playing the Team Love showcase at Knitting Factory one day later.

Cloud Cult MP3s, News & Tour Dates
"Cloud Cult records in a geothermally-powered studio, prints its CDs on recycled materials, donates 100 percent of its after-expenses profit to environmental charities and makes environmental information available at its shows.
Brad Minowa, Cloud Cult's mastermind, organic farmer and founder of the Earthology record label, wouldn't make music any other way. But Cloud Cult doesn't make the kind of "all one love let's jam together" schlock. Cloud Cult's brand-spankin' new CD, Advice from the Hungry Hippopotamus, has a little bit of everything. It would be entirely appropriate to call it epic, even, despite the dippy name. But what else would be expected from the band that Minnesota Music Awards nominated "2004 Artist of the Year" along with Prince and Paul Westerberg?" [Eugene Weekly]
* Check our Cloud Cult's music in the new documentary "Green Green Water". An impacting look how the hydroelectric aspects of our energy consumption are negatively impacting the Cree and Inuit. View the film trailer here (Cloud Cult's "9 Months" from "Who Killed Puck?" is in the opening background)

Pitchfork's Jon Brion Mixtape
JON BRION AND FIONA APPLE

I swiped the above photo from Pitchfork who "compiled a 70-minute sampler for interested parties that covers the major facets of Brion's career: live performances, soundtrack work, production for other artists, and his own pop compositions"
"1. "Stairway to Heaven" (Live, 4/27/05 @ Tonic, New York City) (sorry, no MP3)
A screwball to start off the mix, just as Brion looked to throw off his audience on this night by opening with the Led Zeppelin staple-- he comments they were probably expecting "some soundtracks or something." Nevertheless, soundtracks do turn up in this rather loose interpretation, as teases of famous scores like The Exorcist and Jaws are featured in the piano variations of "Stairway"'s first two sections. However, the third, "rock out" section is the most impressive, showcasing Brion's favorite live trick: Using a number of samplers, he moves from instrument to instrument, building up the song piece-by-piece (yes, drums, bass, rhythm guitar, lead, vocals) from memory. The amount of musical ability it would take to do this absolutely boggles my mind, so much so that when Brion performs it I can even bear to listen to fucking "Stairway to Heaven"."

Antony wins Mercury Prize!!
"Antony & the Johnsons have won the 2005 Nationwide Mercury Prize, the "album of the year" award for British and Irish acts. Antony's Secretly Canadian set "I Am a Bird Now" was named the winner at a ceremony held tonight (Sept. 6) at London's Grosvenor House Hotel.
The event was hosted by musician and TV presenter Jools Holland and featured live performances from shortlisted acts Kaiser Chiefs, KT Tunstall, the Go! Team, the Magic Numbers and Bloc Party.
Bookmakers William Hill had made the Leeds-based alternative rock quintet Kaiser Chiefs the favorite to win the award. The band was quoted at 4/1 when the 12-name shortlist was announced July 19, but the odds shortened and closed at 6/4 yesterday. Second favorite was M.I.A. at 4/1, followed by Bloc Party and Antony & the Johnsons at 5/1." [Billboard]

P.S. 10 cent wings is a pretty good deal huh?"

"I just dropped the napkin and flyers in front of SJ and said "Hey you guys should come to this show later if you aren't doing anything" - to which Scarlett's buddy Josh Hartnett responded - "Thanks man" in a deep 'hey I was in f'n Sin City' voice. I then booked it out of there very quickly, but not before I caught a glance of Scarlett reading my hearfelt napkin/love letter. It was awesome..." [Aziz Ansari]

Alex Chilton Alive & Well | Katrina Updates
"Memphian Alex Chilton, 54, the famed rock singer and guitarist who lives in New Orleans is alive and well.
Ron Easley, a friend and fellow musician who has recorded a number of albums with him, said Chilton called early Monday morning from a hotel in a city Easley would not name. He said Chilton was evacuated by helicopter from his home Sunday and later flown out of the area.
Chilton, who hadn’t been heard from since shortly after Hurricane Katrina struck, told Easley he stayed in his home the entire time and water had gotten up to his porch. Chilton said he had food and water but was most concerned during the week about roving gangs." [commercial appeal] (thx Jen)

Books by Michael Azerrad
"...After goofing off for a few years I eventually blundered into rock journalism, and wound up writing a couple hundred articles for Rolling Stone while writing for MTV News and a bunch of other magazines. A professional highlight was interviewing Ray Charles on the phone and making him laugh. Then I wrote Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana, published in 1993. After a satisfying foray into the dot-com side of things, I started writing my current book, Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991. Now I'm thinking about what book to write next..." [twbookmark]
"Nirvana came out of nowhere in 1991 to sell nearly five million copies of their landmark album Nevermind, whose thunderous sound and indelible melodies embodied all the confusion, frustration, and passion of the emerging Generation X. Come As You Are is the close-up, intimate story of Nirvana -- the only book with exclusive in-depth interviews with bandmembers Kurt Cobain, Krist Noveselic, and Dave Grohl, as well as friends, relatives, former bandmembers, and associates -- now updated to include a new final chapter detailing the last year of Kurt Cobain's life, before his tragic suicide in April 1994." [Buy this book @ Amazon]
"Finally in paperback, the story of the musical revolution that happened right under the nose of the Reagan Eighties- when a small but sprawling network of bands, labels, fanzines, radio stations, and other subversives reenergized American rock with punk rock's do-it-yourself credo and created music that was deeply personal, often brilliant, always challenging, and immensely influential. Our Band Could Be Your Life is a sweeping chronicle of music, politics, drugs, fear, loathing, and faith that is already being recognized as an indie rock classic in its own right." [Buy this book @ Amazon]
Fun Fact: Michael's voice can be heard from a TV in the movie Last Days.

Out Hud kicked motherfukin ass @ Eugene's, NYC | pics

Out Hud played the Labor Day Motherfucker party at Eugene's in NYC last night (Sept. 4, 2005). They said it would be their last show. I hope they were joking because it was easily one of the best shows I've seen this year (also my first Out Hud show). Bloc Party's Mo'fkr performance was the last time I had that much fun while a band was playing, and I don't rememember seeing a live electro-oriented act that good ever.

Getting Naked for Nick Zinner's Book | pics (NSFW)

"In four years the Yeah Yeah Yeahs went from underground sensation to internationally acclaimmed rock band.Through the lens of his camera, lead guitarist Nicholas Zinner, documented the group's meteoric rise to fame. From the Grammys to the concerts, Nick captured the glamour, debauchery and road-weary tedium of his world. I hope you are all happy now gives readers a never before seen look at rock 'n'roll. This collection includes essays by Jim Jarmusch, director of Coffee and Cigarettes, and comedian David Cross."
Last night (Sept 4, 2005) at the Labor Day Motherfucker party at Eugene's in NYC, two lucky winners took home a free copy of Nick's book. Three unlucky people flashed their privates on stage, only to walk away empty-handed.

Kanye West Slams Bush
"Outspoken rap artist Kanye West criticized U.S. President George Bush last night on a TV concert aimed at raising money for victims of Katrina. Appearing in a segment with Canadian Mike Myers, Kanye slammed Bush for his reaction to the crisis saying "George Bush doesn't care about black people.” He also said that America is set up "to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off as slow as possible." West was supposed to be reading from a teleprompter but deviated from the script. His comments were edited out for the West coast airing three hours later." [Much Music]

Antony Finds His Voice | The NY Times
Today's NY Times has an excellent article about Antony....
"Antony's voice is difficult to describe. It is a largely untrained but instinctive and wholly singular sound that keens in the upper registers, somewhere between male and female, between childish innocence and weary adulthood, at once ethereal and earthy.
It emanates from a diverse tradition of divas and divos, including Nina Simone, but also Boy George and Otis Redding, Marc Almond of Soft Cell and Donny Hathaway. Antony is also arguably part of a more recent pop-musical urge that rejects seamless production and lyrical ironies in favor of heart-on-sleeve sincerity. It is an aesthetic embraced by neo-folkists like Sufjan Stevens and Devendra Banhart and nightclub crooners like the Francophonic chanteuse Keren Ann." [The NY Times]
The article also mentions an as of yet unannounced show at Carnegie Hall "next month."

Saturday Night Live comedian Fred Armisen took the stage at Bowery Ballroom after midnight (Aug 26, 2005) between Thunderbirds are Now! and headliner Les Savy Fav. OPEN BAR ALL NIGHT LONG!!!!!
THIS IS NUMBER 5!! As many of you know the last Shindig, in March, was shut down by the fire department. After a long hard search for a new place to set up shop we've finally found the right spot. The new place is much larger and should provide for a far better time. The cost remains the same, a modest $10, and it'll still be open bar all night long and you'll still get the great bands and artists. In addition you'll experience great catering from Vinny Vincenz Pizza (1st ave. btw 13th and 14th st in Manhattan) and a host of other great surprises.
Party Party Party. (vis Loose Record)"

The Drugs got Brian Wilson into it | Smile
AVC: There's a lot of mythology about the role drugs played in the holdup of Smile. Were drugs a significant part of it?
Brian Wilson: Well, the drugs got us into it, let's put it that way. The drugs got us into it, but we got into it so deeply, the drugs, that we had to stop them, because we were way, way ahead of our time for that album. That album was like 30, 40 years ahead of its time. We could have put it out, but again, it was very, very ahead of its time. And the drugs took us very deeply into it, so we had to pull out of the drugs, out of the project for 38 years, and then come back and think back 38 years later and put it all together.
