CMJ Day 3 - A recap in Pictures

I wanted to go to the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah appearance on KCRW (listening right now...wish I went), catch the Patti Smith performance (Bob Dylan thing at Lincoln Center), see the Hold Steady at day stage, attend a panel about blogs, etc... Instead I did nothing during the day for the third day in a row.

It all started at Tribeca Rock Club at 5 PM with the Loose Record / Woxy show featuring Voxtrot, Chin Up Chin Up, and Dios Malos.

After the first two bands played, I asked them if they wouldn't mind posing for a picture.

The Cribs also played the Tribeca show, but I had to be at Tonic by 8:30 for the return of Magneta Lane.

Conveniently, another Canadian band called Camouflage Nights went on right after Magneta Lane.

"Camouflage Nights are ex-Thrush Hermit members Ian McGettigan and Rob (Tigre) Benvie. Benvie is also formerly of The Dears and currently in Presse. Camouflage Nights are not just McGettigan and Benvie; on disc they are joined by any combination of many people, including Feist, Buck 65, City Field’s Matt Murphy, Sloan’s Chris Murphy and many more." While trying to figure out what to do next, I walked by Mercury Lounge. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah weren't even going on for a few hours...

CMJ Day 3

I like Secretly Canadian so I stopped by their showcase at Scenic (where I now see I missed a J Mascis side project earlier in the day). I saw this guy who sits on the floor and does lots of weird stuff open for TV on the Radio once. There he was again. Now I'll remember that his name is Ty Braxton. He was just finishing his set. Though I wanted to see Wilderness who were coming on later, I wasn't in the mood to try out Big Bear who were coming on next.

TY BRAXTON @ SCENIC
CMJ Day 3

Then I realized a bunch of bands I wanted to see were playing the Kill Rock Stars showcase at Knitting Factory, and I made it there in time to catch a bit of The Robot Ate Me in the basement before the venue forced him off stage. (He said he was playing a house party somewhere in Brooklyn on Saturday for those who wanted more though.)

THE ROBOT ATE ME @ KNITTING FACTORY

Next I saw the Gossip for the first time (on the main stage). I'm sorry I waited so long. They were awesome - like awesome-awesome.

CMJ Day 3

After such a great performance, I couldn't I couldn't justify staying out any later for a (supposed) 2 AM Lady Sovereign show at Bowery Ballroom. Turns out I made the right choice... Bowery wouldn't let the under-21 performer in the venue!

Lady Sovereign played CMJ 3 Times?

Lady Sovereign @ Webster Hall

In honor of the three (at least) NYC Lady Sovereign performances I missed this week, I stole the above picture from Tien Mao's photo review of her September 15th CMJ show at Webster Hall with Blackalicious and Aesop Rock.

Her other two shows were at Cake shop in the middle of some night, and at Bowery Ballroom as I write this (decided to come home instead).

Cloud Cult @ 169 Bar, NYC | CMJ 2005 | pics

Cloud Cult @ 169 Bar

I don't think I'll be able to top CMJ Day 2 (September 15, 2005). Although I never made it to Cloud Cult's KEXP performance earlier in the day, and I missed Bell Orchestre thanks to a typeo in CMJ's scheduling (they started before the posted time of 7:00), I was able to catch full sets by Sound Team, Arcade Fire (Bowie included), Gang of Four (Tim Harrington included), and Cloud Cult (thankfully 169 Bar was running a bit behind schedule).

Watching this band at this bar felt like hanging out in their rehearsal space. The sound wasn't great, it was small and dingy, and there were wires everywhere. Coincidentally I ended CMJ day 1 in the same spot at the same time for the (much more packed) Make Believe show the night before.

Though I enjoyed Cloud Cult's performance at Tonic two nights earlier a bit more, and I had just come from two other awesome shows, this show was still a great experience with my favorite band of the moment.

I don't know why 169 Bar discouraged MC Buttafuoco from coming. It wasn't packed at all.

CMJ Is Poop

"Since I haven't attended a single CMJ show yet, I figured that I was the perfect person to present awards to this year's participants. Of course, having only heard of approximately 5% of these bands, I'm going to have to base it solely on their names. I don't think that will be much of a problem.

Best band that sounds like a combination of Joy Division and Squirrel Nut Zippers -- Joy Zipper

Best band that I want to see purely because of their Saved by the Bell connection -- Bayside..."

More Reports from CMJ Day 1

Devendra Banhart @ CMJ 2005 Jeff Baum reviewed his first day of CMJ at Gothamist. We had Tim Fite, Youth Group, and Devendra in common (though our opinions on Tim Fite are not the same).

Jersey Beat likes Tim Fite like me.

Yeti Don't Dance, also at Devendra.

Jen Carlson Gothamist went to the Dandy Warhols. More on her blog.

Catherine saw Two Gallants and got a picture of VICE neon

One Louder went nowhere, but he points out that The Underrated blog saw Jaymay, Sam Champion, Levy and the Cribs and Chris saw the Doves at Warsaw.

Tuesday night Loose Record made it to my show for a bit after checking Sound Team at Mercury Lounge.

Also Tuesday night, Melody Nelson saw the second Nouvelle Vague show at Joe's Pub. I was at the one a few days earlier.

Wiredset has a ton of MP3s of CMJ artists.

Village Voice Guide to CMJ | Towers of London

Towers of London + We Are Scientists
Scenic, 25 Ave B, 212-253-2595.
My new favorite band, Towers of London thrust Guns N' Roses cock rock into Johnny Rotten's mouth and make him swallow. The result is masterfully sleazy. Plus, their shows often end in an arrest and/or broken furniture, so leave your dignity at home. Skinny white guys from Cali, We Are Scientists play sweaty, wired, herky-jerky pop stuff. With the Strays, Living Things, and Innaway. 9pm. FURY

Arcade Fire on secret guest Bowie & opener Sound Team

How do you know Sound Team, the band that's opening up for you?
We played with them and the Unicorns. The last time we were on tour we were driving through Texas and we were driving to Dallas, and we were in Waco and our van broke down. So we were stranded, and we called up a friend, and she knew Sound Team, and she called them up. They were kind enough to come and pick us up in the middle of nowhere with all our gear, and then they drove us up to Dallas in time to make it for our show.

Any surprises for your show tomorrow?
I can't really say much. I think it might be a bit different because we have some extra people in town, but I can't say exactly what's going to happen.

* The whole interview at the Village Voice
* Sound Team tells BV Win asked them to play the show
* People speculate Bowie might be a surprise guest

As Aziz pointed out, I wasn't actually taking pictures at Tonic Tuesday night (Sept 13, 2005). I did sneak a few earlier in the day during soundcheck though.

The show itself went a little long. Cloud Cult actually played until almost 1:00 I think (sorry to those who had to leave early to sleep). If it's any consolation to those who toughed it out, I was there for almost nine hours (fever included).

Sometimes Stuff Sucks

I saw Kaki King perform at Joe's Pub tonight. She mentioned being ashamed for ever complaining about anything because so much stuff sucks for so many people right now. That type of thinking keeps me from feeling really terrible about leaving my wallet in a cab (I knew I shouldn't of wasted money on a stupid cab) after returning from a marathon day of CMJ. I realized it immediately and tried chasing the cab down the street. He was too fast. I already felt pretty crappy (not just because I have a cold/fever/cough) about the loss of Aziz's backpack (iPod and digital camera included) at last night's show. Did I mention you should let me know if you found a backpack?

"The official death toll from Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath now stands at 707."

"At least 160 people were killed and 570 wounded in more than a dozen highly coordinated bombings - the capital's bloodiest day since the end of major combat."

Thank You & Talk To You Soon

It's now 8:30 PM on CMJ Day 1. This is the first time I've had access to the Internet since Tuesday afternoon. Thanks so much to everyone who came out to Tonic Tuesday night. It was a huge success, and all the bands were great. I came down with a fever right before the show, but made it through and am somehow out at shows again today. Hopefully I don't die before the end of CMJ.

Unfortunately last night didn't end all good. Someone (accidentally?) took Aziz's backpack. It was sitting by the bar while he was performing his second set, and was nowhere to be found when we shut the place down. If you happen to know where it went, please e-mail Aziz or I (no questions asked). Thanks! Talk to you soon.

New York – September 13, 2005 – For 25 years, the legendary CMJ Music Marathon has been a springboard for the best new music talent from multiple music genres, discovering music’s future superstars years before their commercial breakthroughs. Nouvelle Vague @ Joe's Pub, NYC | pics

"Nouvelle Vague which translates to "new wave" in English, and bossa nova in Portuguese, revisits a number of both Marc and Olivier's favourite tracks from the early eighties, taking in bands such as The Clash, Joy Division, and the Cure in a stunning combination of bossa nova, jazz and sixties pop." [Amazon]

Nouvelle Vague @ Joe's Pub

I didn't know what to expect from the French band that play cover songs. They put on a great show. Joe's Pub was standing-room only Saturday night (Sept 10, 2005), and the three leading ladies knew how to work the crowd with their range in voices and a bit of humor. The highlight was probably their attempt at testing the level of audience shyness with a sing-along to their extended rendition of the Dead Kennedy's Too Drunk to F*ck. Other favorites included Joy Division's Love Will Tear us Apart, Depeche Mode's Just Can't Get Enough, and The Clash's Guns of Brixton. You can catch them two more times during CMJ.

Video of British Antony at the Mercury Awards

Antony "The lead singer of Mercury Music Prize winners Antony and the Johnsons has dismissed claims he is an American artist taking a British award.
"Everyone's certainly entitled to that opinion, but I actually am British," Antony Hegarty told BBC News.

The 34-year-old singer was born in Chichester, West Sussex, but has lived in the US for more than 20 years. When the shortlist came out, favourites the Kaiser Chiefs said he was American and "got in on a technicality"."

Watch Antony's acceptance speech and performance at the Merucry Prize Awards. Use the same link to find performances by Bloc Party, The Go Team, Kaiser Chiefs, Maxmimo Park and more.

Bowie Discovered the Arcade Fire | Na na na na na!

"Explaining why he decided to make his comeback at a fashion event in the States, Bowie said: "I told them I'd do it only if they got Arcade Fire to perform. They're fantastic."

Laughing, he said: "I discovered them a year ago. Coldplay's Chris Martin has been saying he's discovered them first, but I did. So there. Na na na na na!"" [Mirror]

Arcade Fire & David Bowie MP3 Audio & Video

Bowie backstage w/ Duran Duran
David Bowie and Duran Duran "It's great to be back. I loved every minute of being back on stage - I didn't want to come off, I could have stayed up there all night. I feel fantastic at the moment.

After I had the heart attack I decided to take a year off and do nothing. I didn't do any work and just made sure I looked after myself. I go to the gym, I don't drink and I'm feeling really good today.

I gave up smoking six months before I had the heart attack - so that was worth it, wasn't it! I started to give up when my daughter was born because I wouldn't smoke in the house with her there so I had to go outside. It's bloody cold in winter in New York, so I just quit.

As far as I'm concerned I lead a healthy lifestyle now so it did come as a bit of a shock to have a heart attack, but I feel on top of the world after tonight.

When I was asked to do this event I said I wanted to perform with Arcade Fire, who I love, and it went from there." [Bowie]

* Audio and Video of David Bowie & The Arcade Fire's performance at Fashion Rocks is available thanks to the busy people in the arcadefire.net forums.

No Gwen Stefani @ Misshapes Last Night

MOB SCENE OUTSIDE MISSHAPES - SEPTEMBER 10, 2005
Misshapes

At 11:00 last night I received a text message that read "GWEN STEFANI MISSHAPES." If it was Misshapes' intent to start a fake rumor that would pack a potentially slow night at their club, it worked. I didn't see Thurston Moore either.

* Gwen performed at Radio City Thursday night before the Arcade Fire
* Gwen's L.A.M.B. show is said to be the highlight of fashion week. It's at Roseland Ballroom on September 16th.
* Gwen was spotted in the audience of her husband's show at Bowery Ballroom on August 30th. Below photo of the VIP section at Gavin Rossdale's Institute show snagged from Central Village's Flickr account.

"L.A.M.B., which stands for Love, Angel, Music, Baby, makes its debut on the runway Sept. 16, the finale of eight days of fashion previews for spring 2006. It's the same slot that Jennifer Lopez's Sweetface collection filled last season" [The Seattle Times]

Arcade Fire in the Live Lounge
09 September 2005

"Arcade Fire are very much the band of the moment so we just had to get them into the Live Lounge, naturally! They told us what they made of performing at the Reading and Leeds festivals and which big names are already fans of the band.

They also performed their current single 'Rebellion (Lies)'. You can hear it all again, plus an online exlusive cover version of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs track 'Maps'."
